Pretzel
Kendra M.

Stumbled in here before a kickball game nearby, and it was an instant hit that we came back to all season! The bartender (who might also be the owner?) is super cool and has a great knowledge of their beers on tap. The food is GREAT as well. The chicken doner salad is so flavorful, and the pretzel is perfect. Also a hit were the cheese curds and curry fries. The vibes in the bar are perfect - the front room has a great mural and always a movie playing, plus endless board games. The back room has old gaming systems like an N64 which is a blast. I'll miss our Wednesday trips here but need to find a reason to come back!

Half eaten pretzel

I've never had German food before, and this was phenomenal! I sat down on a Monday at 11:00, one hour before the kitchen closed. My friends and I ordered a lot: pretzel, poutine (fries), chicken kebab, buffalo wings, curry wurst and veggie wurst. All of it was absolutely delicious and had generous portions. We all shared everything that we ordered, but my veggie wurst was my personal favorite. The bartenders and employees are extremely friendly. I will definitely be returning here this summer!

Vegan curry wurst

Had seen that Dönermen does completely vegan döner kebab and currywurst and they did not disappoint! I have not had these dishes since I was in Germany. I got both the döner kebab and the currywurst (pictured), and will say the currywurst was my favorite! It had a great amount of curry seasoning and an incredibly flavorful ketchup that compliment the curry flavors. Not spicy at all. Their doner was ok, I think it would have been better in the restaurant because it was cold by the time I received it. They're also a bar which seems like a fun place to hang out but I just got takeout. I would recommend if you're in the Avondale area.

The curry wurst ($9)

The story behind DönerMen is beautifully serendipitous: they haphazardly decided to mix Indian spices with classic German fare to create a street food style mashup dubbed the Cürrywurst. They also serve wraps, bowls, and a delicious-looking poutine; we opted for their signature cürrywurst ($9), which consisted of their pork and veal sausage over fries, topped with their curry spice sauce. The curry flavors don't entirely go hand in hand with the savory sausage and the slightly sweet sauce, so you end up with something in between that's not spicy enough to be entirely curry, but not traditional enough to be familiar. The sausage itself was juicy and satisfying, making a hearty snack. On a logistical note, I did appreciate the composition that was fairly easy to eat with a fork, without an excessive amount of toppings that spew everywhere as is possible with any form of grandiose fries. Altogether, it's an interesting concept but didn't quite pan out to be particularly life-changing--I wouldn't call it the best or wurst (pun intended) fusion ever. The staff are friendly, service is efficient, and the price is reasonable especially considering that they give you a 1/3 pound sausage (and the fact that you can't and shouldn't expect bouge street food to be cheap in America.)

DonerMen menu at christkindle market

I tried DonerMen when I was at Christkindle Market in Chicago. After perusing most of the food shops, I decided on DonerMen because it seemed to offer the DonerBox that no other shop had. It boasted a mix of fries, veggies, and meat - the healthiest meal I could find there. Upon receiving it, I was disappointed that it came in a small container that could barely hold the contents inside. This made it very difficult to carry to my table and I lost some toppings along the way. This is definitely a food you cannot eat while moving and needs two hands to transport. Once I was seated, I was excited to dig in. Again, the container was small and I wasn't able to really mix anything up and had to eat from the top/outside in. Other than the sauce on top, I was not wowed by anything in this dish. The fries were not very well made (it was cold but not sure if it came out that way or my 15 feet walk cooled it down in Chicago winter... Ontop of having difficult eating it out of a small container, I felt that this wasn't a good value. For $11, I could have gotten a better deal with other offerings at Christkindle Market. I want to like them more because the concept sounds good...I may try their kebab if I ever run into them again and don't have any better options...

Donerbox... Chicken kebab, harissa, tzatziki, salad, and fries!
Angela D.

Food truck browsing on a sunny spring day in Chicago, I saw the description of the DonerBox. Spit-roasted chicken, Greek goat yoghurt tzatziki, spicy red pepper harissa, tomato-cucumber shirazi, wild pickle, sumac sprinkle, fries, and red lettuce salad. Delicious, right? I don't know how it's possible that this meal had next to no flavor. It was so disappointing. The fries were old and mealy, the chicken was dry and flavorless, and the whole thing was completely boring. The harissa had a nice bite but there was hardly any of it on the chicken. I'm sensitive to strong goat flavor so I was hesitant about the tzatziki, but it tasted like plain cow's milk yogurt. I think I paid $11 for this lunch and didn't even want to finish it.

Döner box with fries

I've ordered from here twice. It has always been delicious. Today I got the döner box with fries and it was SO good. Very tasty and fresh. Pretty large portion. Will definitely be ordering again!

Yes working near the Sears (Willis) Tower is great because you can get some food truck traffic around here during lunchtime. The colorfully decorated DönerMen truck serves its take on German street food. I tried a Döner Box, loaded with all sorts of ingredients. In fact this böx öf fööd is a microcosm of my "balanced" diet in general, a pile of both "good and healthy" and "good but not that good for you" ingredients. There is the salad portion with lettuce, onion, tomato and cucumber and a generous portion of shredded roasted chicken, and somewhere in the box is a heap of fries, plus tzatziki yogurt sauce. It is a good and filling lunch box for sure. I think next time I will want to try the currywurst, which really is German street food to me.

Divide up your entree. As each plate passes, drop a portion and pass it on. If you really don't like something, either give it back, find someone at the table who wants it or just finish it anyway. Now you know what to order next visit, when it's just the two of you. The food here is surprisingly good. Not a bad dish on the menu and no shortage of smiles from the staff. Our waitress started off a bit rocky, but really brought it around and rocked the place. Two words, BIG TIP (even though we made her job easier). The steins stayed full and the other drinks flowed very nicely. Everyone ate and drank like kings and enjoyed our last night together. The bill for the evening I'm told was only $300 for 8 guests. Factory in the heavy drinking, I'd say that was more than reasonable. 08/25

It's an incredibly popular Turkish sandwich, loved and adored in the city of Berlin, Germany of all places. Our son, visiting us here in Chicago (from New York) was taunting the virtues of this rather large and tasty sandwich and of course, the city of Chicago has a restaurant making this; just right up the street. Döner 97 on Clark Street adjacent to Lincoln Park is serving up this delicious, sloppy (in a good way) sandwich with all of the fixings. I had their Combination Döner Sandwich a combination of both beef / lamb and chicken kebab sandwich with tender, seasoned meat, fresh veggies, and flavorful sauces in warm flatbread. I really liked it. We also bought a Chicken Döner Sandwich with delicious chicken döner kebab sandwich: tender, seasoned chicken, fresh veggies, and flavorful sauces in warm flatbread. Also very good. These Döner sandwiches are huge like a massive Mexican burrito, messy like a sloppy Joe sandwich, but fun like French Fondue. Butter drenched potato with your choice of veggies and proteins added. A meal in itself! I sampled and loved their Red Lentil soup and Bulgar dishes. The big winner this night was the Ćevapi sausages in their special flatbread. Pro Tip: consider splitting something. The portion size is impressive. If you like leftovers, ignore my tip and get two completely different dishes that you can share the next day. Actually, that's two tips in one. So Pro Tips! The cost was fairly reasonable and the waitstaff very efficient. The mushroom and kale pie was nice and cheesy and the rocking vegan pie was more savoury, with a variety of vegetables and chickpeas as stuffing. The crust was neither too soft nor too crunchy. The highlight of the meal was the curry chips: potato wedges lightly fried with masala and curry leaves. The dipping sauce that came with the chips reminded me of tikka masala sauce, and paired beautifully with the chips. Dessert was toffee pudding: the caramel sauce that came with the pudding was delectable - the pudding itself was excellent and not overly sweet. We tried a variety of NA beers, and I was pleased with how many options they had. Service was quick, and we were well looked after. The ambiance is warm, with dim-ish lighting and a lot of dark wood. The chicken pie I think really needed the chutney that you can get separately. But that made it so much better and made it my preferred pie. The steak and ale pie was better than the chicken pie as a standalone, but needed a bit more gravy I think to elevate it. Sticky toffee pudding again was delicious. Surprisingly light, not overly dense so I was glad it came with the custard which was very flavorful. Overall, will definitely return!

Then came the main attraction: the special for two, a sampler of Poland's biggest hits. The potato pancakes and breaded chicken were golden brown and had a slightly crisp crust. The pierogies were shaped quite like some Chinese dumplings I've had, but the filling was unmistakably Polish. The stuffed cabbage had a generous amount of meat and came in a hearty tomato broth.
