Came in here looking specifically for Albanian fare, specifically cevapi (skinless sausages) and burek (or byrek), and we were not disappointed! This Balkan deli has lots of other cuisine from the region too, such as Serbian beef burger meat, roast pork, roast lamb, Sarma (stuffed cabbage with ground beef), pastries and cakes. We sat in to eat 2 types of burek (a buttery rolled up philo dough-like pastry) with two kinds of fillings -the Spinach and Cheese burek is apparently a popular filling and I can see why! It was cut into quarters, and had a texture that reminded me of a satisfying bite of pizza -the Beef burek was great too! One quarter of it was enough to fill me up. Take note that if you bring some burek home as leftovers, grill it on the stove or reheat in an air fryer. You do it right, it makes the most wholesome crunch when you bite into it. We also ordered a sour cherry cheesecake torte, just because it was so pretty. Couldn't remember the price, but it was definitely worth it. I was reluctant to buy the cevapi at first, because $20 seemed ridiculous for a plate of 10 pieces, but a gentleman convinced us to buy a batch of uncooked cevapi, 20 for just $22. We took it home and once lightly pan fried, we fell in love. I would fit 2 or 3 pieces topped with stone ground mustard, between 2 pieces of bagel or bread. This fed us for several days! According to a family member, Sandy's has been operating in that location for 35 years, and sells a variety of Balkan liquor, drinks, snacks and more. I came for the cakes, but return for the pork cracklings. The first time I entered the store, I was greeted by the scent of frying pork. Heavenly. I didn't know it was cracklings and I came with the express purpose of their cake display. After ordering a couple of (HUGE) slices of cake, I stupidly left. I sat in the car wondering if I should get some cracklings. Dear reader, I did. I also returned a week later for more. At the second visit, I ordered the Raffaello cake. It was good. I thought it'd be similar to the Ferrero Raffaello candy. While it wasn't, it was still a good cake. It was as if coconut and a cheesecake and whipped cream had a bébé. Delicious. So much deliciousness! I took my grandma here for her 70th birthday, as she had been really wanting to go. It is a quaint and cute little deli and bakery serving a variety of items. As I walked into the establishment, I was met with the delicious scent of sweet treats and well seasoned foods. My mouth started to water a bit as I walked by each case encapsulating the food. Food: I ordered a variety of desserts, a few which I was able to sample first. Let me just say YUMMM. You can tell everything is homemade and created with lots of love. Sandy's was extremely accommodating in a last minute order for a full size torta. My grandfather is from Hungary and we ordered a Dobos Torta for his birthday. Been customer for few years now. Very disappointed how they handle my last two orders. We ordered cvarci and for the very first time they arrived absolutely nasty. They were huge and fat. They are pretty pricey talking $20.00 LB we ordered $200 worth and everything end up in the trash. I was ready to give them other chance and try to order ones again. I requested smaller pieces and I asked please to not sand me the order like the last time. $160.00 worth of order arrived in no time. I called few friends to let them know they order is here. When I opened the box I was in absolute shock. ARE YOU KIDDING ME ?? I understand they have fat and I am not really picky but come on. I asked if is possible to get order but not only fat. We ordered them before they were delicious all the time. We even introduced them to European market here in San Diego and they ordered all the time. How is possible that they get great orders and they send me garbage. Been here 3 times the past two weeks. I've passed by this place for years and finally visited, because my brother in law told me their burger was good. I have lived a block away from this place for 6 years now and just tried it last month. I know, I know. Ridiculous. But I'm so glad I finally did! I know nothing about Serbian food. Well, I didn't before I went in anyways. The ladies behind the counter were friendly and helpful. Also helpful were the large signs with pictures over the counter! From those pictures, I picked the cevapi (ground meat, like skinless sausages, cooked on the grill) and a pljeskavica (giant burger topped with onions and a cream cheese like spread). The cevapi was served with this amazing giant bread, onions and more of the cream cheese like spread. They also came with fries and a slaw like side. Sandy's is turning into a regular craving for me now! I need to try other things on the menu like the amazing looking pork cracklings. But when I walk in I just hit my two go-to items. Very overpriced. I needed food for my event. First they said it will be $600 then I removed few items and they said final price is around $500. I left deposit and we agreed for me to come over weekend to pick up everything. When I arrived to pick up food over the weekend, it was little over $700. I was shocked, but lady said "Don't feel bad to spend money, money goes away and comes back" lol... I wouldn't feel bad if I wasn't told total will be around $500. Well.........I don't know what it was but it was good. Happened upon this spot after eating lunch at Pho #1. Everyone was going in and leaving with happy smiles. It is a small establishment. Up front there are a few tables where you could eat or drink your coffee. The back half was the bakery restaurant. I got these things that looked like Twinkie's. Excellent food -especially if you love meat! The staff was very friendly and welcoming! They were very accommodating and grilled up something special for my dad since he wasn't eating red meat. The deli also has a little store inside and we bought some stuff from there to eat with our food which was also delicious (ajvar). We needed up spending a lot of time there and didn't feel rushed at all. The store is very clean. There is some seating but not a lot. It's very causal and homey. we had ordered trays of food for a holiday, after experiencing a death in the family. We had called multiple times to confirm the order, and when we came to pick it up, they pretended like they did not know what we were talking about and when we were asking for what kind of accommodations they can give us, they proceeded to scream in our daughters faces. They were by far the most unprofessional people I have ever seen in my entire life. First time I ordered the burger and it was delicious. Second time I got their baked bread, they were also delicious. So I've been wanting to bring my wife here to try their other food. Finally we got a chance and we got their stuffed cabbage and stuffed pepper. Both very good, and we also ordered the burger and the meat platter to go, and we finished the sarma and stuffed pepper and we just sit there waiting for the meat to come. 30 mins gone and we still waiting so I walked up to the lady and the food is sitting there. I told her we've been waiting, and she gave me an attitude saying it was preparing‍. For more than 30 mins? We came at 2:30 afternoon. We were the only ones there. Btw I spent like $55 something never offered a receipt. This review has nothing to do with their food, but their professionalism. I was there today, and just like other reviewers, it's appalling that they do not care about being safe and sanitary not only during Covid but ALL THE TIME! You are handling food that people put in their mouths. I placed my order and as I am watching the associate that is going to help me with gloves on handling money she continued to handle the pork I ordered without changing her gloves! When I kindly brought it up to her she argued with me saying it was her co-worker that handled the money not her. Regarding management's response to my review: I had never been to either restaurant previously. I was shocked enough by what I saw at Sandy's to write my first Yelp review. (A quick look at other reviewers shows this is how many first step onto Yelp, my path is not unusual). I look forward to offering other reviews in the future, and to write a positive one about Sandy's someday. However, that will be hard to do if Sandy's management continues to dismiss feedback and practice misdirection, as they've done with this and other reviews that mention COVID-related lapses. Having masks on hand is not the same as requiring customers to wear them. I am not the only reviewer who noticed unmasked customers and staff. While I hope no one has contracted COVID after visiting Sandy's, management cannot know this for sure, because the city's contact tracing program is underdeveloped and focused on other communities. That Sandy's is so certain about something so uncertain is another sign that management needs to take COVID more seriously. I wish the people who work at and patronize Sandy's good health. I hope that Sandy's management will open their minds to feedback, their hearts to a community that wants to support them (even if they've only written one Yelp review), and through both, work harder to minimize the risk of exposure. So I just finished eating the Cevapi plate and let me tell you it was out of this world!!!. I was beyond amazed by the flavor of the Cevapi, it really was mouth watering! I honestly didn't expect to be shocked by the amazing grill taste of the meat and the deliciousness of the potatoes and the cabbage! The bread also met all expectations!!! It was the most fluffiest and freshly baked bread I've ever had in quite a while! It's a small place with seating for four people but grabbing something for home is the way To go anyway it has a lot of Serbian deserts, groceries, a deli counter where they sell raw meat by the lb to take home and cook or on the right side they can cook for you. I got the pleskavica sandwich which is a sausage sandwich cooked on a bed of onions with kajmak spread which is a sweeter version of sour cream that taste just like a pice of heaven. I grabbed 2 as even though it's giant you can help yourself eating all of it in a matter of min and this way I jab another one for later lol. My other favorite is chevapi little sausages of awesomeness and don't worry they have menus in English next to the counter that you can simply point to what you want and they will make it for you. By far the best bread in all of Illinois. Every other Sunday I wait an hour before open so that I am the first customer. The bread comes piping hot right out of the oven. I also order a couple of meals to go that are made whilst I wait. The burek comes right out of the kitchen as you are waiting and they all are delicious, especially the meat.
