Half eaten pretzel
Raneen R.

I've never had German food before, and this was phenomenal! I sat down on a Monday at 11:00, one hour before the kitchen closed. My friends and I ordered a lot: pretzel, poutine (fries), chicken kebab, buffalo wings, curry wurst and veggie wurst. All of it was absolutely delicious and had generous portions. We all shared everything that we ordered, but my veggie wurst was my personal favorite. The bartenders and employees are extremely friendly. I will definitely be returning here this summer!

Vegan curry wurst

Had seen that Dönermen does completely vegan döner kebab and currywurst and they did not disappoint! I have not had these dishes since I was in Germany. I got both the döner kebab and the currywurst (pictured), and will say the currywurst was my favorite! It had a great amount of curry seasoning and an incredibly flavorful ketchup that compliment the curry flavors. Not spicy at all. Their doner was ok, I think it would have been better in the restaurant because it was cold by the time I received it. They're also a bar which seems like a fun place to hang out but I just got takeout. I would recommend if you're in the Avondale area.

The curry wurst ($9)

The story behind DönerMen is beautifully serendipitous: they haphazardly decided to mix Indian spices with classic German fare to create a street food style mashup dubbed the Cürrywurst. They also serve wraps, bowls, and a delicious-looking poutine; we opted for their signature cürrywurst ($9), which consisted of their pork and veal sausage over fries, topped with their curry spice sauce. The curry flavors don't entirely go hand in hand with the savory sausage and the slightly sweet sauce, so you end up with something in between that's not spicy enough to be entirely curry, but not traditional enough to be familiar. The sausage itself was juicy and satisfying, making a hearty snack. On a logistical note, I did appreciate the composition that was fairly easy to eat with a fork, without an excessive amount of toppings that spew everywhere as is possible with any form of grandiose fries. Altogether, it's an interesting concept but didn't quite pan out to be particularly life-changing--I wouldn't call it the best or wurst (pun intended) fusion ever. The staff are friendly, service is efficient, and the price is reasonable especially considering that they give you a 1/3 pound sausage (and the fact that you can't and shouldn't expect bouge street food to be cheap in America.)

DonerMen menu at christkindle market
Alison Y.

I tried DonerMen when I was at Christkindle Market in Chicago. After perusing most of the food shops, I decided on DonerMen because it seemed to offer the DonerBox that no other shop had. It boasted a mix of fries, veggies, and meat - the healthiest meal I could find there. Upon receiving it, I was disappointed that it came in a small container that could barely hold the contents inside. This made it very difficult to carry to my table and I lost some toppings along the way. This is definitely a food you cannot eat while moving and needs two hands to transport. Once I was seated, I was excited to dig in. Again, the container was small and I wasn't able to really mix anything up and had to eat from the top/outside in. Other than the sauce on top, I was not wowed by anything in this dish. The fries were not very well made (it was cold but not sure if it came out that way or my 15 feet walk cooled it down in Chicago winter... Ontop of having difficult eating it out of a small container, I felt that this wasn't a good value. For $11, I could have gotten a better deal with other offerings at Christkindle Market. I want to like them more because the concept sounds good...I may try their kebab if I ever run into them again and don't have any better options...

Donerbox... Chicken kebab, harissa, tzatziki, salad, and fries!
Angela D.

Food truck browsing on a sunny spring day in Chicago, I saw the description of the DonerBox. Spit-roasted chicken, Greek goat yoghurt tzatziki, spicy red pepper harissa, tomato-cucumber shirazi, wild pickle, sumac sprinkle, fries, and red lettuce salad. Delicious, right? I don't know how it's possible that this meal had next to no flavor. It was so disappointing. The fries were old and mealy, the chicken was dry and flavorless, and the whole thing was completely boring. The harissa had a nice bite but there was hardly any of it on the chicken. I'm sensitive to strong goat flavor so I was hesitant about the tzatziki, but it tasted like plain cow's milk yogurt. I think I paid $11 for this lunch and didn't even want to finish it.

Döner box with fries

I've ordered from here twice. It has always been delicious. Today I got the döner box with fries and it was SO good. Very tasty and fresh. Pretty large portion. Will definitely be ordering again!

As a German I had to try it. The potato pancakes were a good start, tasted like mom used to make. The Platter had a lot of food. I don't know what region this place is from, the sauerkraut and Blaukraut were not Bavarian, the Spätzle felt ready made and not home made. The Bratwurst was too fine for me, I'm thinking north German. The strudel was good tho. The service was fantastic! From host to server they took care of me and made sure I wanted for nothing, so I can't complain there. Decor wise this looks like what you'd imagine a German restaurant looking like in the US. Lots of banners advertising beer and German flags hanging on the walls with a collection of steins everywhere you look. Overall it's not "authentic" for me, but the food tasted good and the service was exceptional.

I almost always order one or more of the following: Steak Tartar (as a starter), followed by Leberknodel Soupe (liver dumpling soup), and then either the Bavarian Pork Shank, or the Sauerbraten, or the Wiener Schnitzel (a breaded & fried veal cutlet that's as big and pounded flat as a large pancake) as my main. Get these with the Spätzle and the sweet stewed Red Cabbage for the best experience. There is truly no reason to order the burger or the salmon.
