I ordered my standard, 5-Star Chicken Pad Thai, to go, and at first bite, immediately texted my husband that the new iteration of Royal Palm was *IT*, and that it'd be my new favorite Pad Thai place. The flavor, the spice, the CHAR--everything was PERFECT, when most of my previously reliable Pad Thais around had been slipping. I was thrilled. We returned to eat in person shortly after, and it was great. Fast forward to Summer, I really don't know what happened. The steamed and baked buns are all really exceptional (and on their own, if this were a bakery, would be a 5*). The "football," which is a fried glutinous rice dumpling with meat, is also wonderful. I'm rating this 4 rather than 5 because the dim sum standards are less special. The har gao, siu mai, etc are no better than you can get elsewhere in town. Seattle-Area Boba Shop Review #83…read more I had no idea this location of Mee Sum started as a boba shop and only expanded to food later on. I wouldn't have discounted it so long if I had known! Luckily, we saw it as one of the entries during the recent Boba Fest and decided to stop in for lunch as well. In addition to entrees and drinks, they have a small selection of the baked goods they have at the Pike Place location. It's a good alternative for people who don't want to wait in line. Dine in orders get complimentary bowls of hot and sour soup to start. Popcorn Chicken Meal ($13.50) - This plate includes a large pile of fried popcorn chicken, made of juicy thigh meat, dredged in sweet potato flour, and sprinkled with the fragrant salt, white pepper, and five spice mixture. The meat is very moist, the dredge is very even, and the fry gives only a very light crisp. The powder is very fragrant but the mix they use here seems to have a ton more salt than other places. The chicken comes with a bunch of cabbage with small slices of carrot, stewed in a somewhat savory and salty manner. It's very nicely, lightly flavored and is almost a little buttery. There's a small amount of sweetened marinated salty daikon. There's no daikon flavor but it gives the dish a little more crunch. Finally, there's a mound of perfectly cooked long grain rice, topped by a small bit of braised ground pork. It's nice and flavorful, but a little dried out. (4/5) Deluxe Pork Belly Over Rice ($10.50) - This is a pretty large bowl of rice covered with braised, chopped pork belly ala lu rou fan. Tons of fatty pork belly, braised well and flavorful, but with the sauce being more watery and completely disappearing into the rice. It's surprisingly very thin and not that fatty, so the flavor dissipates too quickly. The pork belly is a little on the dry side with a lot of the moisture having escaped. The dish comes with a hardboiled braised egg that looks super dark like it's been marinating in dark soy sauce for hours. It's cooked well done, but doesn't have any of the green coating on the yolk, which is indicative of an overcooked egg. It's again very flavorful from the time spent in the marinade. Overall, this is an okay lu rou fan. Good enough to satisfy a craving, but pales in comparison to great ones. (4/5) BBQ Pork Hombow ($5.50) - Expensive, but also among the largest char siu buns I've ever seen. Chock filled with sweet and savory meat. It tastes like a bit of shaoxing wine hasn't quite been burned off/evaporated, which gives an off flavor that I don't enjoy that much. The bun is a normal chewy texture. (4/5) Jasmine Milk Tea w/ Brown Sugar Boba ($5) - This was one of the Boba Fest 2025 specials, a premixed drink that comes with brown sugar boba. When I ordered it, I was told that I couldn't adjust the sweetness since the drink was premade. Ominous... Could this be any good? The drink comes out with the classic melted brown sugar swirl. After mixing everything thoroughly, the drink actually isn't too sweet at all - probably equivalent to 25% sweet at most places! Being premixed, I wondered if the drink was perhaps made from powder, especially because I found it to be extremely gritty. And yet the flavor indicates that it's actually brewed tea. It's actually very overbrewed (usually fine for boba drinks), muting the jasmine flower flavors a bit, but also allowing the astringency and bitterness of the green tea leaves to be front and center. It's actually a pretty good tea, but really marred by some grittiness, I guess from the heavy use of non-dairy creamer. The boba is actually very good. Sweetened in brown sugar, smooth spheres that have essentially the perfect chew and bounce. Superb boba, probably in my top 10 around Seattle. Milk Tea Rating: 4/5 Boba Rating: 5/5 Portion sizes are generally very big - we only finished about half the food before having to take the rest home. Although, we were saving room for other food/drinks during Boba Fest, so that might have influenced things a bit. I was very pleasantly surprised, especially by the drinks served by Mee Sum. It went from me not even knowing Mee Sum sold boba, to learning that they actually opened as a boba shop and expanded into food, to finally really enjoying their drinks. Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms that require a key at the front counter.
