First visit and easily one of my favorite Indian spots in SF. Simple menu but the food is delicious. Self service so you order at the counter and pick up your food for your table. We just got delivery and went a bit crazy with our order because we wanted to sample and have leftovers. We are extremely lip smacking happy with our order. Everything we ordered was flavorful, spicy (just right, Goldilocks) , tender and DELICIOUS. It's the best we've had in a long time since our place closed down. We ordered chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, chicken tandoori, lamb chop tandoori, vegetable samosas and naan. Oh man, the tandoori was so good and authentic!! It tasted like it was cooked over charcoal but them lamb chop was so tender we are guessing it was in the oven. However it's prepared, it's worth the wait (we live across town). Long Story: I live in Hawaii but I was in San Francisco for about 9 hours on Monday and really wanted to eat at Curry Leaf, but they're closed on Monday, so I found someone to order food for me the night before I arrived. Me: "Sister, can you please order the Lamb Chop, Tikka Masala, and Karahi Chicken from Curry Leaf on Sunday, I'll be arriving on Monday morning and can eat it when I fly in." Sister: "Don't you want to eat fresh Indian food?" Me: "Yeah but I want Curry Leaf." Sister: "Lets go to Amber India. That's my favorite place. You shouldn't eat leftovers if you're only going to be here for a few hours." Me: "But I really want to try the lamb chop. My friend says it's so good he ate there twice during his last trip to SF." Sister: "But you know how hard the rice gets when you refrigerate it." Me: "Just microwave it, it should be okay." Sister: "I don't have a microwave." Me: "What!!?" Best sister ever. She bought a microwave, used Order Ahead to place her order, picked up the food on Sunday. She picked me up from the airport on Monday and we went straight to her place so I could eat Curry Leaf leftovers and it was outstanding. I don't normally like lamb but this lamb was not gamey at all, and the cilantro chutney and tamarind sauce were flavor explosions on the lamb. So freaking good. The tikka masala was also very good and the karahi chicken was kind of oily but also very flavorful. The chicken biryani was a little bit spicy and also hit the spot. The rice they use is the longest grains of rice I've ever seen! After we ate that, we headed straight to Amber India and ate more Indian food. My partner and I ordered off of GrubHub, and got the chicken Tikka Masala, Paneer Masala, Samosas, Basmati Rice, Garlic Naan, and Mango Lassi. The Tikka masala sauce Was GREAT. Samosas were filling and came with a sweet sauce and spicy sauce. Garlic naan was tasty. Mango Lassi was thick and sweet. Food arrived cleanly packaged and super quick, still hot. I suggested Curry Leaf after reading rave Yelp reviews and seeing it pop up on my food delivery apps. Curry Leaf delivered exactly what my friends and I were looking for, which was a tasty yet very casual Sunday Supper with a sit-down atmosphere. The concept is pretty straight forward: take a menu, sit down, and order at the counter when ready. It's best to visit Curry Leaf with a group so that plates can be split. For example, the bread and rice is sold separately and they are very large portions. Both bread and rice sides easily serve two people. The hot dishes like curry and tandoori are more single-serve portions. After visiting the utensil and water stations we sat down at our table. Our wait was quite minimal for our main dishes and came out piping hot. I was very impressed with the complex flavors and ideal consistency of the tandoori and curry dishes. There are times were it's spicy as a woman's scorn and other times where it's just meh mild. Sometimes I go basic AF and order the chicken tikka masala and the baingan bharta with a side of rice. The tikka masala hits the spot but it doesn't light my world on fire. The baingan bharta is bomb.com! It's stewed eggplant with lots of flavorful spices and it not too overwhelming at all like most indian dishes can be. You order your food at the counter and take a number to your seat. The restaurant is self serve with getting your own water, sauces, napkins and cutlery. They do bring the food to your table and clean up after. Restaurant is clean but bathroom could be a bit cleaner. As for the food, it was DELICIOUS!! Ordered the lamb biryani, Karahi chicken, a side of white rice and keema naan. The food is tasty and authentic to its cuisine. Portion sizes are good for two to three people. Prices are reasonable for food quantity. One of the best I have had in a long time. But I am going to warn you, be aware of parking. Always walked by this place and it always smelled great with usually many people dining, finally gave it a try today and loved it. Ordered the Lamb Biryani, a beef and lamb skewer and a tandoori breast (they were out of legs). Biriyani and skewers were delicious and even the chicken breast came out moist, great flavors all around and just the right amount of heat to everything. Portions are quite generous and I was surprised at how inexpensive it was considering what you get. Ended up with enough food for lunch and dinner for around 25$ read more

Curry Leaf is incredible! I come here and least once or twice every week. I first noticed it when walking around North Beach, but did not think much of it as it seems like any other hole in the wall restaurant. However, after trying it as a quick bite, I have been hooked ever since! I was shocked how affordable the food was, especially in San Francisco- you can get two entrees, a side of naan, a side of rice, and sauce for around $30! Truly some of the best Indian food I have had in San Francisco. I always get the chicken vindaloo (spicy but sooo savory and delicous), garlic naan, and raita, and it is the perfect meal and so satisfying. read more

I ordered take out through the yelp app. Very simple, even selected a time i wanted to pick up. I had chicken tikka masala, lamb biryani, and garlic naan. All were delicious. The chicken tikka masala had a good proportion of chicken breast pieces, not over cooked. The curry does not come with rice so you'll need to order it separately. The lamb biryani was also quite good, I ordered medium spicy. There were some carmelized onions in the dish that added a bit of sweetness. The portion size on the biryani is giant. Definitely intended for family style dining. Garlic naan was fine, but very garlicky. Worth a visit. I see why this place has a high star rating. read more

Very good. If you're craving indian food in north beach, this is it. Their chicken tikka masala isn't my favorite- chicken's a bit dry, but the sauce is on point and this is still a solid choice if you're craving curry! But, if you wanna try something new I HIGHLY recommend the benghan bharta (that's the way its spelled here but usually people spell it like "Baingan Bharta") It's pureed eggplant, onion, and tomatoes + spices. First of all, by looking at their menu, there is a lot of things that seem very appealing, and we wanted to try everything, but you could only eat much, right?! so we have to go back! :) we ordered Bengan Bharta (which was also chef's favorite), and we loved it! So good, and flavourful. Very spicy too. We also got chicken Tikka masala and it was descent. I personally prefer chicken thighs over chicken breast. This was with chicken breast. Make sure you get naan or/and rice. We got both, and between the two of us, we finished everything and had no leftovers. Rice could've been better, but naan was delicious and so fresh. I was craving for tandoori chicken and went to curry leaf with my friend. 1. Lamb biryani- 5/5 lamb is cooked perfectly and like the authentic flavours. I recommend to try it. 2. Chicken leg- 5/5 3. Vegetable biryani- 3/5 if you are vegetarian you should go for naan and curry instead. 4. Pakora- 4/5 taste isn't great but it goes well if the weather is cold.
