Chicken curry is comfort food for me, so anyplace that's wafting with it is really speaking my language. You'd think that chicken curry would be easy to get right, but no. I've been disappointed many times. But not here. Biryani is another go-to for me, & again it's easy to assume that it's a hard dish to fail. That is not so, but they nail it every time. The biryani's here are moist & full of flavor. They're on the spicy side, even though we request mild, so be warned. Your nasal passages will be clear when you're done! Chicken tikka masala is not something I ever ordered before I met my husband, & he doesn't really order anything else. He is not half Indian like I am, so he gets a pass. Anyway, he raves about the CTM here. Roti & naan...all naan is not created equal. But the breads at Curry Leaf are a hit, not a miss. After finishing our sunset cruise at 10pm, we were starving and stumbled upon curry leaf, so we decided to give it a try. Honestly, it was one of the strangest restaurant experiences I've ever had. We ordered an even tipped, but then the man behind the counter, told us to get our own plates, cutlery cups, and water. When the food was ready, we also had to pick it up ourselves. At that point, I was half expecting him to ask me to wash the dishes too. As for the food, it really wasn't great especially if you're Pakistani and know how authentic flavors. Maybe it's appeals more to Americans but for us it definitely wasn't worth the visit. Here's what we got: 2/5 stars-Seeks Kabab (I was expecting more than just one). this place surprised me! when you arrive you are seated and handed menus. after deciding you go up to the counter to order your food. plates and utensils are self serve as well as drinks upon ordering. i got the mango lassi and it was creamy and not too sweet! we started with the samosas which had a perfect crisp to them. the filling was well seasoned and spice. some parts weren't cooked fully though and so it was a bit doughy. for our main we ordered, the beef nihari which was something we've never tried before. when I first tried it I didn't really know what to make the flavor but it quickly grew on me. it was spicy and had a unique flavor I can't really describe. it felt somewhat similar to Vietnamese bo kho. the beef itself was tender and easy to eat. the garlic naan was addicting! so crispy but still a little soft in the middle. garlic was there but not overpowering. my boyfriend and I shared a portion but I was tempted to get more. it was a great meal that warmed us up after getting caught in the rain :) read more

Curry Leaf is an Indian and Pakistani restaurant in Russian Hill with flavorful vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The restaurant had indoor seating, good for small groups and you order/pay at the kiosk before your food comes out. The ambiance can be described as casual and the prices are very reasonable. The food is a little sweeter and less spicier than the average Indian restaurant, but the portion sizes are good. The chicken biryani was a good pick and paired well with the chicken karahi. The best halal Indian/Pakistani food in the bay. I think about curry leaf all the time and it's a shame I live in the peninsula. We love the chicken boti and tandoori chicken. The vegetable biryani is delicious every time. The naan is crispy and to die for. You order and sit down/help yourself to water and chutneys (the green one is drinkable). The ambiance is so cozy. I need to preface this with the fact that I've worked in the restaurant industry for a lot of my life, and even worked for a popular food vendor, and have seen what happens when restaurants sacrifice quality ingredients to save on cost... I have a feeling this might be what's happened here. I used to order from Curry Leaf in the past. I was impressed with the savory chicken in the tikka masala and always favored the naan. Today I door dashed my usual, and added pakora to the mix to try something different. I'll start there: the Pakora was SO dry, and had no flavor. It had the consistency of corn bread, but even less tasteful. I was definitely expecting a more moist (sorry for those who hate that word), soft veggie consistency, as it was described. I think the chicken in the chicken tikka masala was the most disappointing of it all. It tasted like it had been frozen and thawed in a microwave. It was hard and dry. The sauce was tasty, but even that couldn't save the dish. I ordered the garlic naan and cheese naan. The garlic naan was pretty rubbery, but the cheese naan was okay. I'm not sure if the cost of ingredients has gone up so they've changed some things (understandable), but the quality this time just wasn't the same. The rice portion was huge, and the rice was good. The portion of the Chicken Tikka Masala when paired with the rice, was filling. Naan was also a decent portion. Please please please, go back to the old, authentic stuff. We went here on the 4th of July and it was a great Indian restaurant. You order at the counter and then sit down. We had Masala Chai, Garlic Naan and Chicken Tikka Masala. It was all delicious! What would I do without Yelp!!!?? ;P After spending a few days in SF's Fisherman's Wharf area and enjoying meal after meal of seafood, fish n chip and clam chowder, we were craving something different and Yelp! came to rescue! We found Curry Leaf on Columbus Street and it is somewhat a hole in the wall. The restaurant is smaller, but very clean and comfortable, and seats about 20 comfortably. We walked in at about 6:45p and were asked to grab the menus and seat ourselves anywhere, and to walk back up to the cashier to place our order whenever we're ready. By the time we left at 7.30p, the restaurant was 90% full. We opted for a Vegetarian Samosa appetizer (excellent, and nice & spicy!), lamb wrap (really good( with balanced flavor), and a boneless chicken biriyani (very good and offered at a very generous portion!). While most people order this place on a delivery app- I think hot and fresh Indian food tastes much better than Indian food cooked 45 minutes ago. That being said ambiance here is no frills but it is clean and the service is attentive. You order at the counter and you have to pick up your food when it's ready. I really enjoy the Bengan Bharta, fish tandoori and samosas here. The bharta is one of the best I've ever had. The fish tandoori is a mix of smoky and flavorful. Samosas are soft but pack a punch. Curry Leaf wasn't even our original dinner spot but when we walked by there was such a flavorful delicious aroma coming from the restaurant that we just had to at least stop by for a snack. I'm suuuuper duper glad that we did stop by and try out some dishes because everything was sooo incredibly flavorful and packed with spices. We got the chicken biryani (so many different spices and packed a lil spicy punch too!). The rice and chicken were both not too dry but the rice was really the star with how delectable it was. We also got the saag dal and it was also very flavorful. The spices are definitely less punchy than in the biryani but it made for a great pairing to the rice. Lentils and spinach were plentiful. There were so many other yummy looking things on the menu that I wished we chose more dishes to try but even then we did not finish the two that we had ordered so portion sizes are solid. Service was quick and easy as you order your food up front and then you pick up at the same counter. The restaurant itself is small/mid sized but still with enough seating. Every time you walk by this place, you always get this whiff of aroma, and you can't help but feel enthralled to come to try this place out. They have quite the selection of items to choose from. The garlic naan was warm and toasty and you gotta pair that with the chicken tikka. The keema biryani is basically this ground chicken rice dish that is very good. The naan is not greasy and comes out piping hot and the rice is also fantastic. The food here is truly delicious. We will definitely be back for more and to try other things on the menu. The best price I've found for good quality Indian food in SF. The lassi is only 2.99 (premade, you just pick it up from the fridge), the paneer tikka masala is 11.99, the pakoras are 3.99 for 8 pieces etc. The menu is concise unlike many other places that try to do too much - there's a handful of options for each category. The samosas are medium sized and taste great. The curry was flavorful, but the paneer quality was ok - good not great. Their breads taste good (i had the aloo naan, garlic naan and paratha) but note that they don't have some traditional north Indian faovrites like bhatura. read more
