New place to try . Owner of Automatic Restaurant newest concept. Hubby and I sat at the bar b/c the wait was long. We just had appetizers and drinks. Verity of things on the menu. The decor was nice and vibrant. Definitely going back when the wait time is better for actual food. read more

The ambiance of Current is stunning. The service is excellent. Unfortunately the food, while fantastic in presentation, is merely average. My general impression was just an overall lack of flavor. Even things that are over sauced don't have much punch. And it feels like sauce on the short ribs and the duck breast are attempts to make up for middle of the road execution. Clearly there is technical skill here, I was just hoping for food that made me want to come back. I'll definitely return for the atmosphere and drink menu alone. But won't be excited about the food. Duck breast was decent, though somehow felt dry even though the execution of it looked perfect. The beef spare rib was underwhelming. Crispy pork bun needs to be completely reworked or removed from the menu, taste and mouth feel were like fish. read more

Such a beautiful place! Feels like a big city restaurant in Bham, and everything is decorated beautifully. We loved the pork skewer and miso tart the most. The dumplings and quail were really great as well. Highly recommend the Current experience! read more

I don't think this place has been open for very long. I didn't know what to expect because I came with my friend and it was her suggestion, but I was pleased with the atmosphere. High ceilings really create an airy feel to the space, and the large doors open to the outdoor space let a breeze blow through. We made a reservation, and were glad we did as it was busy. The menu was eclectic and I'm not going to lie about the fact that I didn't know half the things on it. It felt a little pretentious in a way, and I was definitely intimidated. That being said, our waitress was very knowledgeable about everything on the menu and gracefully answered all our questions. We started with drinks; my friend's espresso martini was great and she followed it with one of their house cocktails, something with Thai in it (I don't remember the name, but it was AMAZING). I ordered a glass of rosé and it was fine, nothing to write home about. Food wise I ordered the kimchi fried rice. My expectations were non existent, but I was pleasantly surprised. The dish wasn't too vinegary which was my main fear! My friend ordered a variety of things; miso soup, the blistered sugar snap peas, chicken thigh skewer, smashed cucumbers, tuna nigiri, and A5 wagyu nigiri. Everything she had was good! A waiter ended up bringing an extra bowl of cucumbers to the table and I had some; my only complaint was there was nothing really stand out about the dish. It tasted very much like cucumbers and soy sauce. I also ended up ordering the A5 wagyu, and it was the unexpected star of the savory portion of our meal. I had never had nigiri before but decided to take the plunge for the wagyu and I was glad I did! It was excellent! It did feel like it took a bit of time for our food to come to our table, possibly due to the number of people there. For dessert we ordered the chocolate cake (there is a fancier name but I can't remember what it was) and the miso tart, per the recommendation of our waitress. Here is the brutally honest part of my review: the chocolate cake was extremely underwhelming. It did have some candied oranges (maybe clementines?) on top that were nice, but there were only three small pieces, far too few for the size of the cake. Otherwise the cake was kind of a mediocre chocolate cake. Nothing special about it. If I were to give a suggestion, the candied orange syrup in between the layers would've really brightened up the cake, but alas that wasn't the case. I also thought it was coated with espresso which again would've been a nice flavor profile, but not so. I think it was black sesame seeds? They didn't have much flavor so it didn't add anything to the cake. The star was definitely the oranges. The underdog of the whole meal in my opinion was the miso tart. I never would've ordered it myself, but our waitress insisted it would be good and man was she right. She compared it to a buttermilk tart and I feel like that is fairly accurate. It had the slight sour bite in the actual filling, but to our surprise it features a caramelized top, making it crispy like a crème brûlée. The browned sugar paired with the tart taste of the filling complemented each other so well. The crust grounded the tart and gave it some texture, and cream on the side added richness. Overall an excellent dessert, we loved it! I'm not going to lie, this place didn't feel like somewhere I would eat in Birmingham. I felt like I could be in SoHo in NYC when I stepped outside the doors. But I think it has a promising future in the Iron City! read more

Sat at the bar with Kendall and Clay and had the best experience. Wonderful & unique house cocktails, stunning food, quick & dependable service (constantly had everyone pouring water, asking how I was, packing food w/o asking, etc.). Mgr. Drake was watching over the floor the entire time, chatting with guests and running food. They have a very smooth operation here, must try and definitely a new staple. read more

This new restaurant definitely has a sophisticated vibe and cute aesthetic! It is a bit pricey (Nigiri starts at $11 each, but definitely would try the Wagyu), but you can make a lot out of the appetizer selection if you're watching the budget! Everything came out fast and the service was great! read more

I go there for fancy dinners sometimes and the food is always incredible. I love the creativity with the ingredients and the ambiance.

The fiancé and I came here to eat last Saturday 1/10/26. I've had numerous delicious meals at Automatic Seafood so had really high expectations. But goodness gracious, coming here turned out to be a $219 MAJOR BUMMER. I initially wasn't going to post a review on here, but no one from the restaurant responded to the feedback I sent them via resy email. So the drinks were okay, but the 2 appetizers were dominated by the taste of burnt. The "crust" that came on top of our dumplings was definitely burnt, and so were the squash blossoms. The thick part of the squash blossom had a nice consistency once you got through the outside though. Anyway, the entrées were also extremely disappointing! We ordered the steak from the charcoal grilled list and the short-rib curry dish. So the curry dish was delivered to our table cold and had that "been sitting for a bit" congealed film on the top. It's was the best dish we had though. The Denver cut steak was described to us as "buttery and pillowy" but was so incredibly chewy that to ingest it you had to swallow the pieces whole. It literally was impossible to chew it into any smaller pieces. I can only assume our waiter knew our experience and food was EXTREMELY SUBPAR bc he didn't even ask us how it was. I don't recall ever sending food back anywhere and HATE to be complainy, but we had to tell him that the steak was wack AF!!! I LOVE the fat on steaks like ribeyes and even like chewing and eating strip fat, but this was like hard bubble gum and I had to seriously open up the back of my throat to swallow the 2 pieces of steak i had. Tried a piece from the end then also a middle piece thinking it would be different, but nope. The waiter ended up insisting to replace that dish with the charcoal grilled short-rib (i can't remember what it's called on the menu but it's served to eat in lettuce wraps). That meat was also extremely fatty but edible. Honestly didn't really care for the flavor and the super vinegary sauce served with it, but was a nice gesture from our salty attitude server. That's my input about our experience... I wish I'd have listened to my gut when looking for somewhere for us to eat Saturday that had available reservations, bc when this place had reservations available for every possible time Saturday open to close....I thought, 'i wonder if that's a sign it's not good,' and it definitely turned out to be another $200 lesson/reminder to trust my intuition. Bc all the other restaurants I looked at were all booked except for a couple had after 9pm spots....ok diatribe over, proceed with caution. Oh yah, restaurant was aesthetically pleasing regardless of the food & drink quality. read more

The restaurant is beautiful! I'd simply go back just for that. The food presentation was pretty, however, the taste was a bit mediocre. We had the snapper, rice, dumplings and Korean fried chicken. The drinks were very interesting combinations, there was one with some form of a pea and one with peanut infused tequila. I'm glad the bartender let us sample them before ordering. Our service was great, the staff was attentive to our needs. read more

My brother and I went here for dinner before a show at the BJCC recently and thought it was fantastic! Let me start by saying they have complementary valet and it was appreciated as there was zero parking in the area. Upon entering we were greeted with a smile by the hostess and she had us wait briefly in the waiting area while they prepared our table. We were sat promptly within 5 minutes of our reservation time. The ambiance felt modern, upscale, industrial and was a whole vibe. The food was also really good, there were so many interesting dishes we wanted to try. As a vegan it was disappointing that there wasn't clearly marked options, but when I asked the server what vegan options were on the menu I was impressed with her knowledge of the menu and she instantly gave me a few recommendations and offered to check with the chef on modifications if needed. She made me feel welcome and not a burden like some servers come off as. I landed on getting the pear miso honey salad as a starter, and then the wok vegetables, smashed cucumber, and chili crisp broccoli for my meal. Everything had great flavor and was well prepared. We were worried with several dishes that we may get tight on time before our show but everything came out timely and warm. My brother got the miso soup, scallion flatbread, dumplings, and kimchi fried rice. He also enjoyed each of these dishes. I tried his scallion flatbread and we both would recommend you try this as it's simply delicious. For cocktails we were really impressed with the selection. They have some options you've seen before but with an Asian twist such as the old fashioned I got made with black tea incorporated. My brother got a drink with sparkling water incorporated that the server mentioned was made using some fancy machine they have in house. The beers all looked so unique that we both had to try one of those also. We got a red rice Japanese draft beer and a canned passion fruit guava sour, both excellent. All in all this experience was a home run for us with the food, service, and ambiance hitting on all cylinders. We will definitely be back! read more

First time visiting. Service was great and bartenders are friendly. They have excellent craft cocktails. I wasn't too sure about the menu but food was very tasty. Unfortunately, the first words out of our servers mouth was that they were out of 3 or 4 of the popular items. But , the short rib was tasty, the wonton appetizers were yummy and the chicken appetizer was very good. Not necessarily my cup of tea, but the ambiance, craft cocktails and tasty dishes I selected made it a win. read more

My wife and I came here for dinner. We try our best to go to Birmingham reaturants. We were welcomed by nice people and seated immediately since we had reservations. We had a great conversation with Ella who made some great drink suggestions and a great attitude. Our waiter Hector was excellent also, he made some great suggestions and we had some wonderful tappas plates for us. We have traveled and been to many places and I will say the Miso soup is the best we have ever had. We also tried the duck liver mousse, pork shiitake dumplings, and the chicken and pork skewers. We would definitely go back again. The only thing was that it was a little hot, which is understandable given the size of the area and the large windows. This is a great place and we will be back soon. read more

We were warmly welcomed by the hostess and manager as we approached the hostess stand. There were two in our party and we had a reservation at the kitchen observation bar. Wait staff immediately approached with menus and suggestions. We had a nice crisp white wine from Spain. The chicken liver mousse and scallops were a great choice to start. Next was the tuna nigiri. We finished with the short rib entree which is served with lettuce leaves. We added some bao buns...great choice. EVERYTHING was delicious! I can't wait to come back to try other things on the menu. I do not want to fail to mention the exceptional service throughout our experience. STRONGLY recommend. read more

Went to current for the first time last night and was blown away. In fact, I'd say it's probably the best meal I've had in Birmingham. From the moment you walk in, Current is impressive. High ceilings in an old, industrial use building. Long bar with huge liquor selection. Beautiful, post-art-deco/mid-century design stylings everywhere--it's worth it to go just to sit in the space. Very, very well done. We sat outside, which is definitely a less-impressive space. It's nicely done, but not to the level of the inside. The service was very good--every bit as good as Automatic (the owner of which also owns Current, I'm told). The food, though, is what will really keep me coming back. It was simply amazing. Apparently, the chef spent a great deal of time in Asia and it shows. Every dish was well thought out and impressive in terms of ingredient quality, taste, and presentation. We started with the pork belly, which was perfectly crisped and paired with fresh mint, peppers, and other herbs, and served on lettuce with a sweet and tangy sauce. We also had the pork skewer, which was amazing. This was probably the singularly most impressive dish. It's a Lao dish, and most people suck at making Lao food. Current nailed it, though. Charcoal grilled to perfection, and incredibly tender. We also got the short rib, the rice, the peas (must get), and the snapper (another Lao dish, another banger). We also ordered 6 total drinks. Our party was two couples, and it came out to about $165/couple for everything. Extremely, extremely reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. In sum, Current is yet another excellent addition to a Birmingham food scene that punches weigh above its weight class. I'd recommend it to even the snobbiest eaters. 10/10 read more

Hearing Adam Evans had opened another restaurant, we had to give it a try! We went within the first two weeks of their opening and it did not disappoint! Located just behind Red Mountain Theater and across from the Fennec, street parking can be a little bit tough to find, but not impossible! They also have valet available. With the sun setting later in the spring, the restaurant was filled with natural light but had nice themes of teals/blues to go along with the Current vibe. All of the flavors were so wonderful. The tiger prawns with miso butter were fantastic - I've never had prawns melt in my mouth before but they also had a wonderful grill/smoky flavor. The vegetable clay pot rice was also packed with flavor and I wish I could've eaten more of the eggplant and mushroom in that dish. The cantonese style pork belly was a little bit underwhelming, having had this in Chinatowns across the country. The skin of the pork was so difficult to cut through even with a knife and was too difficult to chew - took away from the experience a little bit. The absolute sleeper dish was the miso tart. Maybe it's because we didn't know what to expect, but after trying the delicious caramel flavor and perfect crust, I would go again just for the tart. Again, we went within the first weeks so kinks in the service are to be expected. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the dishes and gave great recommendations. However, he also mis-wrote the quantity and the dishes we ordered. Thankfully he read our order back to us so we could make any corrections. Overall a fantastic dining experience and would gladly be back (if I can get a resy!) read more
