We visited for a special occasion and really enjoyed ourselves. Reservations are recommended, and they have free valet parking. There is no public parking close by. We ordered the scallops as an appetizer, which were excellent. The entrees were good, but what really stood out were the grilled pea pods tossed in a tahini and miso sauce. Loved the ambience of this place! Upscale without feeling like it's trying too hard. We loved all the meats we ordered -- the lamb ribs as an appetizer and the short rib as an entree. But the sides were a miss. The scallion pancakes were dry and missing the strong scallion flavor. Brussels were just eh -- I think we both prefer a more charred tender sprout, and these were closer to raw and chewy. All to say I think we just ordered wrong for us and we'd try it again! read more

Loved the atmosphere here. We are big fans of automatic so knew we had to try it out. Right when you walk in you don't feel like you are in Birmingham anymore. It's a cool vibe and very cozy. We sat at the bar with Tracey and she was so precious! She was a fantastic server and had a great personality . Our drinks were delicious. My husband had a play on a Moscow mule and he really liked it. For appetizer we had the scallion bread which I would probably skip next time it was unique but needed a little something else (in my opinion) For main course we had the porklion and my husband had the short rib and he said it's his favorite meal he's ever had my porkloin was delicious.! I saw the reviews and saw some mushroom dishes on the menu that appealed to me, however, the menu changes frequently and the dish I was interested in wasn't being offered. I ended up getting the miso soup, carrots and scallion focaccia. The miso was great, the carrots were good but could have used a lot less of the fried carrot tops. Wow. Im Asian and have high standards when it comes ro Asian fusion places but this place impressed me. My favorite dish was the mushroom clay por which was rich and hearty with several types of shrooms over rice. I also loved the short rib ssam which was fork tender and very flavorful and fun making little lettuce wraps with very good Kincaid and ssamjang. The snapper was grilled over mushrooms with a buerre blanc sauce and was good but not special. Pork dumplings had a great crisp and were as good as any I've had. The scallion pancakes r grilled which is different as they r traditionally pan fried so they were a bit drier than I expected but still tasty. Miso custard had a crispy top like creme brulee and a creamy center but I did not get any real miso flavor. The matcha soft serve was great with good but not overpowering matcha flavor and tart huckleberries and nuts. The service was attentive and im always amazed when they turn an old warehouse into an upscale place but I dig it. Overall this is one of my new favorite restaurants in Bham. read more

The waiter gave me a lovely wine recommendation and I ordered 4 sides for my meal. Oh! The menu was dated the current date so items may change daily? My favorites were the bok choy, rice and cucumber dishes. They have a unique menu. Entrees ranged between $27 and $60. Sides separate. The facility is snazzy, beautiful ceilings and bar area. Our waiter Sam was knowledgeable and helpful with recommendations and navigating the menu. My friend and I shared two appetizers, an entree, and two sides and it was plenty of food. I enjoyed the corn ribs, super unique and wonderful flavors. The pork katsu bao were also delicious, although I wouldn't have minded more mustard. We got the flounder, and it was delicious. Service could have been better, not very friendly and short with you. Received the wrong dish at one point, pointed it out to a passing server. Shrugged his shoulders and walked away. What a disgusting experience. I came here two weeks ago and I gave them four and five stars, which is nothing I ever do for five stars. I deleted that review. I came in tonight. The bar had two couples sitting there. I was a single person. I waited 20 minutes to not even be acknowledged but for the hostess, who was passing by saying oh do you need a menu and I said why thank you so much yes and then she goes. Do you need anything? I said well you know I know the bartender is busy. I'll take a glass of water and I'm OK and then another 10 minutes later goes by no bartender no acknowledgment no like I'll be right with you. She's just making drinks for the restaurants where all it would've taken, her was two minutes to pour me a freaking glass of wine, which she did not do so this then makes the host to see me sitting there looking at my phone and I'm not angry man and she goes. Can I get you something to drink and then she goes and gets me my glass of wine for $14. I drink it. I'm now here an hour and 10 minutes later and the bartender finally says what can I get you to eat? Excuse me, I've been here for an hour and 10 minutes. I want nothing to eat. I'll take my check and go elsewhere. And I get it it's Sunday business is slow but or is it not I was entrée is $40-$68 the wine I would've drank two or three of them they're $14 each. My bill would've been $110 minimum plus the tip so I left and ate a burger across the street. read more

I am a big fan of Automatic, so I was really looking forward to try Current Charcoal. I went for a work dinner and got there early (530is) and it was quiet, so we got lots of attention from our waitress and she was so helpful talking us through the whole menu. She was incredibly knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. We got drinks and lots of apps to share to start and honestly there was nothing I didn't like. The pork boa, the shiitake mousse, the scallops, and the sweet potatoes were amazing. I got the short rib for my mine and it's up there with one of the best meals I've ever had. The restaurant feels warm and welcoming and the staff is incredibly nice. I truly can't wait to come back and try the new things they add to the menu. read more

Came in 6:30 pm on a Monday, pretty empty about a 1/4 full. Ordered a round of cocktails and some appetizers and they were really good. Waiter came by and asked if we wanted to order, told him give us a minute will pick some stuff out. He must not have liked that answer because we never saw him again. Like even in the entire restaurant he just disappeared. After 25 minutes we went up to the host and asked for our bill, another waiter dropped off our bill and we paid and left. This is now my favorite restaurant in Birmingham. We sat at the bar and asked what the menu recommendations were from several. So we (2 people) tried pork dumplins, duck liver mouse, pork skewer, snap peas, and asparagus with the year of the dragon and oh snap cocktails. Everything was very well balanced. The snap peas were probably my absolute favorite, but at this restaurant, it's extremely hard to pick a favorite. We cleaned all the plates. We finished all the drinks. The bartenders, Suzanne and Drake, were amazing. The food was amazing. We wanted to try dessert, but we didn't... this time. Next time we know, and next time... we are trying all of it. Fourth time dining here, but I guess not since they changed to a "summer" menu. Came for dumplings, curry dish, matcha tea soft serve- none apparently on summer menu, so just beware menu has changed. In fact, menu has not been same anytime I've been there. I guess evolving since opening. I'm posting the current menu! Settled on items on current menu - but they were sold out of everything we were going to order (halibut, tuna, bao app)! Server did not say in advance. BTW, "bao" is only ONE (server should say that you need to order the number you want!). Sat at bar in far corner - closed our menus to signify ready to order and bartender removed our food menus and didn't take our order - very odd! Had to flag her down. Were delivered TWO dishes that were not ours until we got ours. Servers were confused on bar seats numbers. All that aside, the spare ribs were to die for and side of fried rice - the server who delivered spare ribs was knowledgeable and explained how to assemble the spare ribs with the baos and sauce and delicious kimchi. That's why I'm giving a 4 star instead of 3 and also bc this is the most aesthetically pleasing/sexy restaurant in town. We went on a prime time on Friday night - lots of open seats - not bc anything is wrong with the food - it's amazing - but I think bc the menu and prices are challenging - we stared at the menu and were at a loss what to order due to prices and items being sold out (and prior loved dishes not on current menu). They have duck for $80, $60 and $50 dishes, for instance wanted something green on the side - the broccoli has king trumpet mushrooms so that's around $20 side. To have a good experience at a restaurant, your expectations must match the experience. This did not, but we stayed open/flexible and left happy due to the delicious dishes we landed on, found parking, got a last minute table at prime time (hard in Bham), and a cool vibe. We'll be back. Thinking kinda pricey (cucumbers were $10 for a small bowl of marinated cucumbers / lamb was $26 for very little meat) but you may have a different $ scale. Again, flavors were delicious and skewer meat tender. Three ordered the Lotus in the Wild cocktail (I forget main liquor in that) and I ordered Cabernet (Elderton) and everybody liked their drinks. Walked in and was floored by the place. Beautifully decorated and plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor. You simply cannot go wrong with a single dish on this menu. The fiancé and I came here to eat last Saturday 1/10/26. I've had numerous delicious meals at Automatic Seafood so had really high expectations. But goodness gracious, coming here turned out to be a $219 MAJOR BUMMER. I initially wasn't going to post a review on here, but no one from the restaurant responded to the feedback I sent them via resy email. So the drinks were okay, but the 2 appetizers were dominated by the taste of burnt. The "crust" that came on top of our dumplings was definitely burnt, and so were the squash blossoms. The thick part of the squash blossom had a nice consistency once you got through the outside though. Anyway, the entrées were also extremely disappointing! We ordered the steak from the charcoal grilled list and the short-rib curry dish. So the curry dish was delivered to our table cold and had that "been sitting for a bit" congealed film on the top. It's was the best dish we had though. The Denver cut steak was described to us as "buttery and pillowy" but was so incredibly chewy that to ingest it you had to swallow the pieces whole. It literally was impossible to chew it into any smaller pieces. I can only assume our waiter knew our experience and food was EXTREMELY SUBPAR bc he didn't even ask us how it was. I don't recall ever sending food back anywhere and HATE to be complainy, but we had to tell him that the steak was wack AF!!! I LOVE the fat on steaks like ribeyes and even like chewing and eating strip fat, but this was like hard bubble gum and I had to seriously open up the back of my throat to swallow the 2 pieces of steak i had. Tried a piece from the end then also a middle piece thinking it would be different, but nope. The waiter ended up insisting to replace that dish with the charcoal grilled short-rib (i can't remember what it's called on the menu but it's served to eat in lettuce wraps). That meat was also extremely fatty but edible. Honestly didn't really care for the flavor and the super vinegary sauce served with it, but was a nice gesture from our salty attitude server. That's my input about our experience... I wish I'd have listened to my gut when looking for somewhere for us to eat Saturday that had available reservations, bc when this place had reservations available for every possible time Saturday open to close....I thought, 'i wonder if that's a sign it's not good,' and it definitely turned out to be another $200 lesson/reminder to trust my intuition. Bc all the other restaurants I looked at were all booked except for a couple had after 9pm spots....ok diatribe over, proceed with caution. I visited current charcoal grill on a Friday with a bar reservation, it wasn't too busy considering it was at 5:00. The waiter was very attentive and the ambience was nice and open. I didn't love the bar seating, it was not a very cozy feel and the chairs weren't the most comfortable but that is expected from a bar. We got the miso broth to start, it was like an elevated clear soup from hibachi but with a more fishy taste. Did not love it 4/10. The PORK AND SHIITAKE DUMPLINGS these where fire, definitely the highlight of the meal; they are fun and tasty and the chili oil that comes with is flavorful. The last app we got was the Japanese fried chicken, these had potential but the size of the chicken was very awkward and they where lukewarm, sauce was decent. For the main we got shrimp noodles and the coal fired collar. Both where mid unfortunately. The shrimp where not deveined properly which is always off putting and for the price I would expect them to be clean. The collar had a strong odor and the charcoal was the only flavor I got besides the pickled veg. Overall the ambience and rotating menu might bring me back here to give it another shot. I would like to rate it a 3.5 because I know they are rather new and I do appreciate the addition of an upscale Asian fusion restaurant to Birmingham. read more

The ambiance of Current is stunning. The service is excellent. Unfortunately the food, while fantastic in presentation, is merely average. My general impression was just an overall lack of flavor. Even things that are over sauced don't have much punch. And it feels like sauce on the short ribs and the duck breast are attempts to make up for middle of the road execution. Clearly there is technical skill here, I was just hoping for food that made me want to come back. I'll definitely return for the atmosphere and drink menu alone. But won't be excited about the food. Duck breast was decent, though somehow felt dry even though the execution of it looked perfect. The beef spare rib was underwhelming. Crispy pork bun needs to be completely reworked or removed from the menu, taste and mouth feel were like fish. read more

Fried chicken was good, the flatbread was nothing special and seemed like maybe needed something for flavor. Our entree surprisingly arrived within minutes of ordering. We got the crispy noodle shrimp, where shrimp seemed scarce. We had to look of them as it seemed it was like 1 shrimp chopped into pieces and that too for the price. It had no flavor either. The sweet potato was decent and good portion size. The highlight was the desserts. We tried two of the three and they were delicious.
