I had placed an order online on their site for pick the next day. Their website was easy to navigate and to place an order. I placed an order of 6 cupcakes (strawberry, coffee, red velvet, guava & passion fruit, mint, and salted caramel) and 6 french macarons (flavors were strawberry, pistachio, and vanilla--2 of each) for my husband's birthday. Not only would you be supporting a local business, but you will get delicious cupcakes (they have macaroons, but I have not tried them) that fulfills any sweet tooth. My son is not a cupcake person at all but when I brought him home a chocolate one....He ate that thing so quick and loved it. My favorite flavors are strawberry and lemon! Located right next to the water fountain in Oakland city Center. This small shop sells cupcakes and macarons. I do understand that cupcake sells at $3 a piece which to some people seems expensive. However, I have seen reviews posted in 2012 stating that $3 was the price back then. After 6 years amidst inflation and higher prices of commodities, the prize remained the same and yet, people still complain. Oh well, you can't simply please everyone. I dropped by on a Tuesday when the store fortunately offers $2 deal on cupcakes. However by the time I came in, there's only a few cupcakes left. Not really a big surprise whenever there's a special sale. I decided on a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting. The cupcake was moist and the right amount of sweetness. My work always gets cupcakes from here because of the convenience and overall appreciation for the cupcakes themselves. I went here recently and ordered some for my team. When you order 5, you get 1 for free! From what I've tried: -PB Chocolate: Great, decadent and comforting. My favorite of the bunch. It has been over three months since I had a cupcake from Cupcake Cove. This afternoon (3:10 PM), I decided to give the place one more chance by sampling their wares for improvement. The cupcakes on display were coconut, coffee, chocolate peanut butter, black bottom, strawberry, mint chocolate and red velvet. I ordered one coconut and one coffee. The coconut cupcake was dense and dry. The tiny cake itself lacked a coconut flavoring. It was basically a yellow cupcake with a hint of vanilla flavoring. The icing was stiff, sugary sweet, and all the coconut flavoring was in the icing itself. The coffee cupcake was also dense and dry. The tiny cake itself tasted exactly the same as the coconut one - hmmm...must be the same cake batter used in both these cupcakes. Again the coffee flavoring was in the sugary sweet icing. Sad to say, and it is unfortunate...these cupcakes were a disappointment and there was no improvement from the last time. These cupcakes were so dense and dry that they reminded me of the lemon flavored cake that one of my aunts used to bake...enough to give anybody the hiccups. Now I have half of the coconut cupcake and three quarters of the coffee cupcake sitting in its container left in the fridge. If my hubby doesn't eat them leftover cupcakes by tomorrow evening, they will be going into the food compost bin...no bueno. Whatever happened to creativity and innovation? I mean, can't they make a pina colada cupcake with a coconut flavored whipped cream icing and topped with a sprinkle of crushed pineapple or a pineapple tidbit? How about changing the flavor of that coffee cupcake to a mocha chocolate cake base and a hazelnut coffee flavored icing? Oh Cupcake Cove, it's been awhile since we've last met, and after much deliberation decided to return and try you once again. Although I still believe the only day worth visiting you is $2 Tuesday because they're so pricey, I'm glad I was able to give you a second chance. First off- If you're coming on $2 Tuesdays, don't walk in expecting the freshest cupcakes you can get. The selection offered are day olds. I ordered a Red Velvet Cupcake and was quite pleased. For a day old cupcake, it was still surprisingly very moist and the cupcake wasn't overbearingly sweet, it was the right balance of sweetness in the cupcake. The last time I was here I had the Passionberry Guava Cupcake and the cupcake base was a tad dry. I realize depending on what you choose out of the selection, the cupcakes can either be a hit or miss. But I definitely would highly recommend getting the Red Velvet cupcake, it was moist and definitely worth trying! Still love the packaging, it's quite adorable and fits the cupcake nicely, so if you take your cupcake to go you don't have to worry about having the cupcake explode everywhere. The people working over the counter are extremely sweet and friendly. As I paid and was getting my change back, the person helping me accidently ripped one of my bills handing it to me and immediately went back to give me a fresh new bill. They were extremely kind and apoligized for their mistake. Very kind ambience and customer service! Overall I would come back if I was ever in the area and if it was $2 Tuesdays. The location is convenient for state and federal workers because it's right there in City Center among the shops, etc. They are standard size cupcakes and by that I mean they are the size you make at home. It's all unimpressive and lifeless, save one sign that reads "Keep Calm and Eat A Cupcake". Small details, but they make a difference when you pay $3 for a gourmet treat (which, in this case, was also unusually small). The service was--wait, what service?. Three twenty-somethings too busy to smile, looking really out of place in a cute little store. I tried their Salted Caramel Cupcake based on a positive review. I shouldn't have. Most of the same complaints as others: Cake: Dry and rough in texture, Not soft & fluffy like a good cupcake should be. Flour definitely not been sifted at all. Flavors don't go well together or made any sense, for eg: a chocolate cupcake with a dollop of strawberry cream frosting on top? Frosting: Too sugary and had no substance to it. Definately not smooth. Ours tasted a day old. I think a cake mix box would taste a lot better than theirs. . Below quality, not worth paying for at all. We wasted our 15.00. You can be curious if you're in the area and waste just 3 ; ) Employees: Young girls just there for a paycheck and maybe want to help out the family business. They're fake-nice. I had to write a review, because i like to Yelp the small businesses, and my experience was so different than the bad reviews. I'm sorry for the people that had a bad experience. Mine was so opposite. I randomly stumbled upon this place while waiting for my food across the way. I had business to conduct in the area. Contrary to the other Yelper's experience he was stocked with many many macaroons, and cupcakes. I got redvelvet, lemon and a few others. I actually wish i got more. But they didn't look like anything special. Just regular cupcakes. So, i didn't go crazy. But i was wrong. Also, of note: i saw some people complaining about price. I happened to come on a Tuesday and they have $2 Tuesday. All cupcakes are $2. I don't believe any deals on the macaroons though. Anyway, i got home and ate the cupcakes. They were the most moist, delicious cupcakes I've ever had. The frosting was creamy and delicious. The cupcakes melted in your mouth. I gave them to 4 people. All agreed. Best cupcakes we've ever had. I'm so sorry for the other people that got crappy cupcakes and no macaroons. Must have been an off day. Glad to see updated hours now state the shop is open 11-6. The cupcakes are delicious, whether they're day-olds or freshly baked. The macaroons are perfectly made -- crunchy on the outside, yet soft on the inside. They are quite sweet, though. I don't recommend eating an entire cupcake followed by a macaroon. I really wanted to like these cupcakes. They look to be a family-run business. They are in a great location. I had the passion-fruit guava. The frosting was wonderful, with fruit mixed in. But it seemed like too much had been piled on the regular size cupcake. The cake was way too moist, a lot like tres leches of which I'm not a fan. It slowly deflated under the weight of the frosting. The whole cake fell apart in my hands when I was 2/3 of the way done. What a mess! My daughter had vanilla. She said the frosting was good, then took a bite of the cake and abandoned it. I tried the cake. It was again too moist, perhaps underdone. Tragic end to this tale of disappointment: Their box for a half-dozen is the size of a regular cake box. They gave me a handled bag but try taking that bag and a stroller while corralling a preschooler down to the BART station. Needless to say the remaining cupcakes did not fare well on the journey home. My suspicions about too much frosting were confirmed. The strawberry completely detached in a big block from the chocolate cake(not sure about this combo, anyway.) The same happened to the coffee cupcake The lemon cupcake took the brunt of the damage and is a big yellow-filled mess. The red velvet is the most intact. I think they hit the nail on the head this time!!! I went back for my fourth visit and I was pleasantly surprised to find moist delicious cupcakes!! I bought 4 in total, 2 vanilla and coffee, one coconut and one vanilla. I ate the two coffee ones and brought the others home for my husband and my son. They both really liked the cupcakes! When I started working in Oakland City Center area I was thrilled with the dining options I had in such a close distance to my office, even more excited to find a tiny little cupcake shop on one of my lunchtime strolls through City Center. The first time I came here I was less than impressed. The photos from fellow reviewers show a display case stocked with a large variety of flavors. This was not the case when I stopped in. There were maybe 8 or 9 flavor options for me to choose from, no macaroons or any other offerings. I elected for a peanut butter frosted chocolate cupcake (how can you go wrong with peanut butter and chocolate?) The cupcake was small, and too dry for its density. The frosting was good but it did not taste like peanut butter. It did however balance out the dryness of the cake. The second time I went there were a few more flavors to choose from, but again no macaroons. I elected the lemon cupcake (as I love all baked things lemon!) and it was better this time than the previous time. The cupcake was smaller but it was definitely more moist and the lemon frosting was very good. Overall, it sounds like the quality is hit or miss.. personal opinion they are overpriced at $3 a cupcake for such a small "ok" tasting dessert. Often it doesn't come down to price for me but calories when making a dessert decision. If I want to use my sugar/carb calories on a baked treat I will go down 14th to the french bakery or even across clay to Specialtys for a cookie or danish before coming back to the Cupcake Cove. read more
