We went there for my husband's birthday and I'm so disappointed in the quality of food they serve now. It used to be a great place for a steak. If you look at the reviews, the recent ones are not very good. The ones from years past were very good. We had steak and lobster. My husband's steak was semi good and he liked the lobster. However, the steak had no seasoning and was not a true filet cut. The baked potato that I got was warm and not hot and I had a hard time getting the better to even melt in there. The steak had a layer of fat across the top and it was filled with fat and gristle inside, and no seasoning on this steak either. We've been here a few times, before and after the change. Since the changeover, we've come to listen to live music, have some drinks and a bit of food. We call and make a reservation, as we want to be near the band. We've been with another family with kids and just us, adults. The servers are always attentive and kind. Tonight i had the smash burger and I was blown away. I swapped the American cheese for cheddar, but that wouldn't have changed my mind one bit. The patties are seasoned really well and I can tell they are not frozen. I've eaten burgers in many, many restaurants and this is hands down the best. The "special sauce" and pickles compliment the cheese and patty really well. The shoestring fries were just okay. Next time I'll try the onion straws! Decided to eat here for a last minute birthday lunch and they were able to quickly accommodate a group of 9 of us with no problem. We had out of town guests with us and were trying to avoid having to drive all the way to Dallas for a good meal, but also find a place close by that would have something that everyone would like - including picky kids. I honestly had low initial expectations considering the 3.6 yelp stars but our lunch turned out better than I thought it would. Service by our waiter, Davis, was excellent. The fresh tortillas were warm and delicious. The lunch entrees were pretty average in taste, but nothing to complain about. Everyone ate most of their meal. We ordered sandwiches, tacos, salads, grilled shrimp, and steak. Dessert was very good also. We ordered chocolate cake, key lime pie, and a slice of cheesecake and finished them all. First time and and wowza. Was seated immediately and quickly had our drinks. My wife ordered the chicken laredo with a salad. He liked both. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. Also added a side of mac and cheese. The steak was very tender and flavorful. Mashed potatoes were perfectly whipped and tasted great. Fantastic layout and rustic look , very friendly staff , decent prices . Now the serious review starts. I order a margarita. It shows up in a 8 oz glass with 6 oz of ice and maybe 2 sips of flavored water no taste of much other for $12 . More about this later. Then I ordered it 10 ounce prime rib my brother-in-law ordered an 8 ounce sirloin . my prime rib was thin with a lot of fat. I had ordered cowboy potatoes. I ended up getting a sweet potato, but they added cowboy potatoes to make up for it I don't know where a young gentleman comes to the table with no identification whatsoever who he was and starts, explaining the excellence of their drink making. No introduction who he was or apologetic for the misunderstanding or any offer to make it better just very defensive on their week drink mixing. This was our first visit to Culpeppers in 12 years. The new C3 stands up to the long running tradition of Culpeppers history. The place looks great and the staff was exceptional. I can't wait to sit out in the new patio. Tonight we had a few items off the menu. First off the homemade tortillas were hot, fresh and as soft as a cloud. The steak finger calamari is hands down, the best calamari I have ever had. The chicken fried steak tastes like Texas. Tender, crispy and delicious. The green beans had snap and a lot of flavor. The cowboy potatoes did not disappoint. The Culpepper chicken was tender and juicy with a touch of smoke. I'm pretty sure we had an entire onion fried to perfection. 11/25/2023 Our 20 year anniversary. We have been long time customers, every birthday, valentines day, anniversary this was our place foe many years and I am sure many others feel the same. No more fine dining in Rockwall, so sad. They may as well label it a Chilis, but Chilis food is a bit better. It is now just another sad tex-mex restaurant, like we don't have enough? Don't get me wrong, i love Chili's but its not a fine dining establishment and does not claim to be. I wish I knew where the Culpeppers Steakhouse chef went. So sad, this was an icon in the area and now its gone. If you like casual tex-mex food you will enjoy, but if you are looking for the fine dining steakhouse experience it used to be then do not bother. read more

If I could give this place a zero star I would between service and food. $18 for like 8-10 pieces of calamari is a rip off for potion and taste was underwhelming. My husband got the double bone pork chop and I got the steak burger and both of our meals were so under seasoned. My burger was also so drenched in sauce it destroyed the bun and I couldn't pick it up to eat it. If we weren't here with a toddler for Mother's Day I would have sent it back or complained how expensive it was for such poor quality food. That said for travel the cost is more than I normally would pay, though for a special occasion I would have no issue with the prices. Very disappointed from the time we were seated to the time we left. I frequented Culpeppers in 2002-2005 and also when I moved back in 2011-2013 and it was an upscale place. After moving away for 13 years I came back and it was 180 degrees from what they were known for: great quality food, upscale ambiance, absolute professional service and great presentation of their menu. This recent experience was so subpar. I found out they changed owners and I was so disappointed at our experience, I will never come back. Wish it was the Culpeppers I enjoyed years back. I had high hopes for this place when my wife and I went there recently on a Friday night. From the moment we walked in the service started out really good. Our Server, Brittney, was helpful, chatty and knew her menu quite well. We were very pleased with how everything started. My wife and I started out with a few drinks, a margarita and a local "mixed" drink and they were ok, nothing that "wowed" us. Then the appetizers came out. To start, my wife and I ordered "Texas Torpedos," their version of a jalapeno popper and we split a wedge salad. The poppers were so salty that after a few we stopped eating them. The wedge was ok, a little watery and not overly flavorful and the cherry tomatoes on the wedge were beyond ripe! However, after pushing the poppers away, it was explained to us that the Texas Torpedos are made by the owner and sold to local Sonic drive-ins. This was NOT a selling-point to me because if you are supposed to be a "high end steakhouse," why are you serving fast food jalapeno poppers? As the evening progressed the lamb shank and short ribs that my wife and I had ordered as our main course was served. My wife's short ribs were a tad dry and tough, short ribs should just fall apart, but I liked them. My lamb shank was flavorful and I enjoyed the first one but when I cut into the second one it was rare! Blue rare! Inedible. I waited for a while for someone to walk by that I could flag down to have it re-fired but after a while it got cold and I gave up. Brittney was kind and removed the inedible items from the bill and then my wife and I went to the lounge with the remains of our bottle of wine, carrying our glasses with us. Promptly the lounge Server stopped us and asked if we were "taking our wine glasses." I was CARRYING a bottle of wine, NO, I'm not "stealing" your wine glasses!! Geez. After sitting in the lounge for an hour, the Server in the lounge made no effort to offer water, a dessert menu, or really never spoke to us at all. She made a point of giving the checks out promptly to the few patrons left there on that Friday night, clearing tables rapidly, assumedly to get the heck outta there when her section was cleared. We will probably go back for the live music and a few drinks, but this will not be a "go-to" for my wife and I when we're in the Rockwall area. The wine selection was REALLY good, however, the food was subpar and the service was spotty and solely dependent on which Server you get for your table or section. read more

Not our first time to Rockwall's best steakhouse, but definitely the most memorable. Had an engagement later in the evening so we were seated right after 5:00 pm. If you have never seen the inside, Culpepper is pure Texas. Great vibe. The food was perfect. One NY strip and one 22 IX Cowboy Ribeye. Both cooked to perfection. Lobster Mac and calamari for an appetizer. All were delicious. Our waiter Ken was incredible. When he learned that we were there for a steak before the boy headed off to boot camp. Jen showed us a picture of his son (Navy) and evening bought desert. He made a good meal a memorable experience. My deepest gratitude. It was just not a good dining experience -- the wait time for any type of service (drinks, food, questions) was ridiculous. The serving staff was pleasant enough, but they seemed to be very disjointed, inattentive, and unaware. It also seemed that the reservation details (booked online through the Ressy portal) were not relayed to our hostess/server as we requested patio seating but were placed inside directly next to another party which would have infringed on the intimate meal we were seeking; I also notated that we were there for a birthday, yet there were no steps taken to recognize that as I have come to expect from other steakhouse dining experiences which was disappointing. Pros: nice atmosphere and good food Cons: it's not easy finding parking. It's very loud inside. They didn't have napkins or silverware. When I asked if I could just have some extra cocktail napkins the bartender gave them to me with wet hands, so most of the napkins were wet. Ordered for the first time from the updated Culpepper's through Uber Eats. Was delivered just fine, Howe was missing the gravy for 2 orders of Chicken Fried Steak. Who wants CFS with no gravy? Spent $80 on 2 orders. Food was salty and small sides with stingy toppings. Called the restaurant and they wouldn't help bc it was ordered through Uber Eats even though they were the ones who didn't pack the gravy. Uber Eats wouldn't compensate anything either.
