This place is a bar but I opted out of drinking as I wanted to go to bed early so sorry I can't rate the drinks. I got the 3 cheese platter. I loved it. The staff was super friendly and did an excellent job of presentation of the food and explaining where each cheese came from. I highly recommend trying this dish! The Crow's Nest is considered Anchorage's premier restaurant, and this is not without good reason. This restaurant provides a high end experience without the pretentiousness. Everything from the wine menu to the dessert menu is an experience, and very detailed. I have been here on two occasions, the first just for cocktails, and the second more recent visit was for dinner to celebrate a wedding anniversary. The bar, and cocktail lounge area was a very nice experience. They have an extensive wine list, and a very well put together cocktail menu. They also provide some very nice bar snacks to munch on with your drinks. The drinks are on the pricier side, but you go to the Crow's Nest for an unparalleled experience. As you sip on cocktails you can enjoy some beautiful 360 views of the city, the Chugach mountains, and the ocean. Dining here for a special occasion was the right choice. Upon entering we were greeted by the host who upon reading our reservation wished us a happy anniversary. Several staff members who came to our table also wished us happy anniversary. Safe to say I was extremely impressed by this small attention to detail. We were seated at a table with unobstructed views of Anchorage below us, and the mountains in the distance. It was an excellent table, but unfortunately did not face west so we did not see the sun set. Our server, Ryan, was excellent. He was personable, down to earth, and very attentive. He gave us his honest opinion on menu items when asked, as well as offered recommendations. If you are a big wine drinker they also have an in house sommelier who will assist you with recommendations and meal pairings. You can tell the entire staff works as a team because everyone in the restaurant pays attention to your table even if they are not your server. The restaurant had accommodated a fairly large party of around 40 when we were dining, and Ryan was one of their servers. Our table did not matter any less to him even though we were only 2 guests. The service at the Crow's Nest is excellent, and exactly what you would expect from a high end restaurant. The dinner menu is not very extensive, but they have a nice selection of different choices for each course. The smaller sized menu helps the kitchen staff focus on the choices to ensure they are well presented and properly cooked so we certainly did not mind. There are still plenty of options to choose from. You can also see the French influences on the menu. Our meal started with an amuse bouche of butternut squash mousse. It was a fall influenced, which I thought was a nice touch. I also really enjoyed that they stuck with the French influence and offered this course. We were also served complimentary bread & butter. There were 3 bread choices, and they were freshly baked. For appetizers we ordered the foie gras, and king crab fritters. The foie gras was delectable--some of the best I have ever had. It was paired with a fruit coulis and black cherry bread, which brought out the fullness of the flavor of the meat. It was extremely well prepared and beautifully presented. In comparison the king crab fritters kind of fell flat. They were a pretty safe menu choice, but a popular one as recommended by our server. They were nicely prepared, and the inside was more like risotto than a doughy fritter. Though you could not really taste the crab. The pickle aioli had a nice flavor to it. But, it was a pretty boring item in comparison to everything else we dined on. For entrees I ordered the octopus, and my husband ordered the duroc pork chop. Both of these items were well prepared, and beautifully presented. The plating for the octopus in particular was a work of art. The pork chop was sous vide, and served medium. It was extremely tender, juicy and flavorful. My husband exclaimed that it was the best pork chop he has ever had. My octopus was perfectly cooked throughout with a lovely sear. It was tender, and not overcooked. Both entrees were paired perfectly with accompaniments that brought out the flavors of the meat. The maple bourbon lacquer that the pork chop was served with was delectable, and paired with the meat perfectly bringing a salty sweet component to the dish. The hazelnut romesco served with the octopus was rich and creamy perfectly bringing out the saltiness of the fish. We were extremely satisfied with our entree choices. For dessert we ordered the chocolate cake to share. The cake was served warm, and was very rich and creamy. It was a lovely end to our meal. To our surprise we were also presented with complimentary grand marnier chocolates prepared in house by the pastry chef served with strawberry and mango coulis. "Happy Anniversary" was written on the plate in chocolate. It was a lovely surprise, and nice touch to end or meal. After making our way up to the Crows Nest while exploring the Captain Cook Hotel lobby, we instantly realized we should have made dinner reservations here. The view is outstanding, the bar was really nice, and the pictures of the dining room online do not do it justice. Luckily, we were able to change our plans, and make a reservation for the next night. While there appears to be a dress code for this place, the attire of all the patrons was quite mixed, we felt fine in our 'classy casual' clothes. I was in dressy jeans, dressy pointy black flats, and a nice sweater. My partner was a pair of brown Kuhl pants, a button down long sleeve shirt, with dressier shoes (not sneakers). We really enjoyed the overall experience of this place. We started int he bar with a cocktail, and then moved into the dining room for dinner. Their wine list was very impressive - extensive with a wide variety of choices and price points. Regarding the food, the salad is really the only complaint I would make. When I saw that they had a panzenella salad, I got excited. When I see panzenalla on a menu, I do expect beautiful chunks of bread mixed with the salad...however, this was literally just a green salad with 4 to 5 croutons - doesn't warrant the panzanella name, but if it just said salad on the menu, it would have been good. For entrees we both had the King Crab Legs and they were very good. They do cut them in half for you, so there is absolutely no work to eat the crab. The only concern is that due to them being cut in half, they do get cold quickly, so I almost prefer having to do some work to eat them. Lastly, we shared the chocolate cake for dessert, and it was very good. The service was outstanding, even when our server was occupied with other guests, her colleagues stopped by and kept the meal on track. Overall, this is a special occasion restaurant and since we were starting our Alaskan Adventure - we decided it was worth it. The atmosphere, service and outstanding view were the best parts, and the food was very good, solid, but not outstanding. So, if you are totally food focused, you may not love Crows Nest. read more

Experienced for the first time some unprofessional behavior from one of the servers in the bar here. She was attempting to make it appear she was being professional but her attitude and her demeanor was 100% rude. Definitely recommend that despite whatever the staffing issues are or whether or not it is a busy weekend, that the management team reminds their staff that they should be able to maintain composure and professionalism at all times. This is a standard that I expect at the Captain Cook Hotel and was very disappointed by this experience. Those in the restaurant industry have good reason post pandemic to continuously ask of their customers to be kind in a world where there are staffing shortages etc. But the staff needs to be reminded of this as well and they need to treat their patrons with respect. read more

Came here for our anniversary dinner and had a great time. Lovely dinner with an awesome view. Wish we had gotten a table on the other side by the water, but the downtown view was still beautiful. Avg dish cost about $40. I had the halibut and my husband had the ribeye. Oh man, his steak was ginormous. I didn't really think it would be that big. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce complimented it very well. My halibut was light and refreshing. They have a huge selection of wine. We ended up ordering a bottle of cabernet. I was a bit disappointed at how small the crab cakes were though! I believe it was $16 for just one patty. Delicious, but I would probably not order it again since the portion was so small. It would have been great if they had given us a "Happy Anniversary" cake though. When the reservation was made, we did specify that we were there celebrating our anniversary. Sitting high a-top the Captain Cook is not a bad way to spend an evening enjoying delicious food. I must admit, I was a little skeptical. There are not many fine dining restaurants in Anchorage and I feel the ones that are here merely attempt but do not deliver. Crow's nest delivers on nearly every aspect of what I feel fine dining should represent. Following a delicious amuse of mushroom and cheese, we began our meal with the crab cake. It was lightly breaded and served with a subtle horseradish sauce. The crab was the most prominent component of the dish, as it should be. I was pleased to discover the breading and binder did not take over the flavor and texture of the crab cake. After the crab cakes, participants of our party indulged in delicious soups and beet salads. They all seemed to enjoy their second course. Our entrees arrived. I ordered the bouillabaisse while others ordered the cod, scallops and pork chop. I enjoyed the bouillabaisse because it was different than any other kind I have tasted. The light saffron broth complimented the delicate flavors of the cod, scallops and trout. The addition of a king crab claw was a bonus. I had a taste of the scallops dish and it was equally delicious. The scallops were seared to perfection. I noticed the steak and pork chop were very large portions compared to the seafood dishes so if you're looking for a lot of food, choose one of those dishes. In conclusion of our dinner we ordered dessert and coffee. Our table got a variety of plates. We sampled the cheese plate, chocolate cake, bananas foster and the poached pear. Each dessert was carefully made an delicate. I enjoyed the pear the most. Overall I felt my dining experience was great. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. The staff was always filing our water glasses, removing dirty dishes and insuring we were having a good time. The food was well seasoned, never over done and presented beautifully. I liked the ambiance and of course the view. It is expensive and maybe just a few dollars more than what it should be but you are also paying for the experience. Well I was disappointed with the food. For the price you're paying, it's not worth it. Tried the mushroom soup they had and oh boy, that looked and tasted like gravy. It was poured like gravy too. It's like puréed mushroom soup and beef stock and some milk. Weirdest part, there was popcorn in it. They made it seem fancy but nope that's just good old regular popcorn. And for some reason the soup tasted sweet so it's a gravy soup with a little sweetness. After that, I got the bouillabaisse because our server recommended it. Bad choice. I haven't tasted a lot of bouillabaisse but I didn't expect it to be sweet. I didn't know the recipe had sugar in it or something. Every bite of any seafood in there was sweet. I think I'm used to it having more tomato in it. For me, the only saving grace for this place is the dessert. Had the banana split and it was so yummy! You can definitely tell it's made from scratch. The banana ice cream taste so much like banana it's so powerfully good. The strawberry ice cream was so fresh and the vanilla part had bits of crunchy sugar in it or something, it was so good! I wanted to share my negative experience at the Crow's Nest this past weekend. I was visiting Anchorage for the first time (first time in Alaska actually) and I did my research on places to visit and things to do. The Crow's Nest was on my list. I decided to visit on Friday night (May 3rd). I went up and was greeted by the host. The conversation that ensued between us went like this: Host : Hello, welcome to the Crow's Nest. Me : Hi! I'd like have a few bites to eat and a few drinks, and it's just me. Host : Sure, but we do have a dress code. No hats allowed. Me : What about in the bar area? Host : No, not in the bar, or the restaurant. It's just something we've had and it's part of our culture here. Me : OK, may I have a table by the glass windows? Host : That's really reserved for the people who are actually dining with us, you said you're only having a few bites right? Me : Well, if I'm going to take off my hat, I would like a seat with a view. Host : I'm sorry Ma'am. Me : In that case, I'll be going. Thanks! What you need to understand is I wasn't wearing a baseball hat or something casual. I was wearing a classic Fedora which matched my heels. You don't know me, but I own 45 hats - all match my heels. I've been wearing hats for several decades. It's part of who I am and my identity. Asking me to take off my hat was like asking a man to off his shirt. It's not an accessory, it's my outfit! In spite of this, I agreed to take off my hat but then I was denied seating in the restaurant because I wasn't "actually dining", I alone would have had several appetizers and even more drinks and probably dessert. How I choose to "dine" should not be a deciding factor in whether I get to sit in the restaurant or not. They actually lost on a lot of business. I did not care for the host's attitude. It definitely felt like I was being rejected bluntly for other reasons. I have never felt so discriminated against. I chose not to make a scene and I left. But it left a very bitter taste in my mouth. How do you expect to get any business from tourists when most tourists travel casually. I wasn't even casual, I was dressed up. But apparently still not good enough for the restaurant. I am just wanting to share this because this restaurant is iconic of Anchorage but it apparently is not welcome to tourists. I am very disappointed in the restaurant and their staff's behaviour towards me. Also valet parking is $36! That's just outrageous! read more

Service members... AVOID this place at all costs. Not friendly to military. First, their hours are false. They don't take food orders after 930pm. After working over 14 hours I stopped by to get some dinner a little bit before 930pm. Due to the arrogance and cockiness of their mediocre chef, they refused to take my order because they were unwilling to accommodate my very reasonable need. Their recommendation was to leave and for me to go to the other lackluster restaurant "Fletchers" on the main floor of the hotel. Due to their blatant discrimination my money wasn't good enough for them. So be it, I guess I shouldn't be surprised by a Chef who claims he came to Alaska for the pursuit of sustainable seafood yet serves a dish that requires the painful force feeding of ducks. read more

Celebrated our 5th anniversary here! Everyone told us to check this place out on a special occasion. The restaurant is located on the 20th floor of Captain Cooks and has a great view of downtown Anchorage. I reserved a table on Open Table and put a note that our 20 month old daughter would be accompanying us. We had a short walk from the theatre where we watched The Little Mermaid live. Of course the kiddo decides to fall asleep in the last 10 minutes of the musical. ‍ Tip: the elevator is right around the corner from Fletcher's though they will not take you to the 20th floor until 5pm. We learned this the hard way by not seeing signage for the restaurant and walked to the other end of the hotel. This didn't matter much since we were early and the elevators wouldn't allow us to go up to the 20th at 4:50pm. Once we arrived we were immediately sat at our table that already had a high chair. The staff was super accommodating by allowing us to sit at a booth instead so we could let the kiddo continue her late nap. We ordered the King Crab Fritters Fritters, Roast Carrot Soup and Paella. I thought the fritters were ok but really liked the soup and paella. If I go back I'm going to order the octopus!!! There were two small slices in the paella and it was cooked to perfection. If your only experience of octopus is the rubbery tentacle of cheap sushi then please eject that from your memory to be replaced by this perfectly massaged octopod masterpiece. (My second dish with octopus that has been tenderized by massage techniques.) We also got the Bananas Foster which is prepared by your server table side. My husband and I walked in on a busy Saturday evening knowing full well without reservations we could possibly be turned away. Sarah, the hostess, was very sweet and kind. She directed us to the bar. If I want to take people out to dinner and have the night shine I take them here. The view is amazing, there is absolutely no rush, and most of the food is fantastic. The last time I came here was 3 years ago and it was to celebrate a relative's test completion, and recently it was to celebrate another relative's birthday. One of the reasons we came here is because of the beef bone marrow appetizer. It may not be for everyone, but it's fantastic and bones perfectly roasted. Also a great highlight were the oysters, which were so incredibly amazing. My starter of King Crab Bisque fell flat on it's face. Oh man what a disappointment. It was all potato tasting. We all enjoyed our entrees and the dessert, Banana Foster, did not disappoint. Now for some slight criticisms. My original bread plate had hardened cheese or something on it. I didn't notice until a roll was placed on it. Ge-ross! I used my amuse bouche plate. We were sat near the kitchen door and our server kept yelling into the kitchen when he entered, which I would expect at Texas Roadhouse, but not here. No one else was doing that. Also, while the plates were cleared and replaced there were bits of salad and appetizer dressing on the table that fell when dishing. I like it when it's removed. I know it sounds snooty, like don't be a pig, but I like it when the gentleman at Jen's cleans the table. It's just an expectation when you're dropping $100/head. Went here for my birthday dinner, it turned out to be a complete disaster. They refused to sell my friend and I alcohol because our "ID's look fake" . I stated "they don't even make fake Alaska IDs" and the manager said "they do, I know people that have some." Great to know the manager admits to knowing individuals with fake ID's, she should really worry about the individuals she knows with them instead of accusing her customers. What a way to ruin my birthday dinner. I believe this was a hate crime, as my friend and I were not caucasian. It definitely felt like they were trying to get us to leave by coming up with this bogus ass scenario. I'll be letting my family and friends know to stay away from this place. I came here for a solo dinner on a Saturday. I was seated at my reaver action time of 6:30 over looking the water. The dinner was wonderful being able to watch the sunset. I had the crab bisque to start. It was well flavored but not the best ever. It was worth the cost. Rib eye as the main corse. The steak was the one of the best I've ever had, cooked just right, the crust and sauce just brought out all the flavor. The sides were a little bland but the stake sauce made them nice. The dessert was the best thing I've ever experienced. It was the Foie Gras Semifreddoo. The picture I included, $12 for an artistry of delicious. I was a little worried I'd be rushed as a single at a table on a weekend not but that was not the case. I took my time, watched the sunset, read a book and enjoyed my evening. read more
