Last weekend, I had posted to my Facebook that I'd been to a diner and had a really good 'zen' experience. A former co-worker/friend commented that I should check this place out. So, bright and early on a Saturday morning I hopped into my car, and drove twenty two miles north to arrive here. I pulled into the small strip-mall, and I parked at the edge of the parking lot. I walked the distance to the front door and opened the door. I crossed the threshold and was instantly greeted by the back end of a family standing in the small 'waiting area'. I looked around, the place was packed! There were people in every single table as far as I could see. At several of the booths, children stood on the bench seats, contentedly drawing on their children's menus. I glanced around at the 'bar' and noticed several older gentleman, and a seat or two open.
The hostess/waitress looked at me, and I pointed to myself, and gestured to the empty seats at the bar area. She nodded and I walked over to take an empty seat. As I climbed into the stool, a menu and place settings were placed in front of me. A different girl walked up and asked for my drink request, and I asked for a cup of coffee. I looked around, trying to find a paper or something....but only found the local want-ads. Somewhat disparaged, I turned back to the menu, and perused it. It exclaimed 'home of the world's largest omelet' at the top, so I figured I'd get one of those. After perusing the options, I saw one that called out to me. Probably because it had my name written right on it. "Scotty's Chili Cheese Dog Omelette" Six eggs, chili, cheese, and a hot dog...AND on top of that it's got my name in the title. How can you not want one? When new girl behind the counter came back with my coffee, I asked for one. She smiled, nodded, and wrote it down on her pad. She then asked if I'd prefer toast or biscuits and gravy. "Is that even really a choice?" I thought to myself, as I opted for the biscuits and gravy. She walked back to give it to the kitchen, and I began to flip through the Acton Want-ads. After the want-ads got boring, I turned to my 3DS for entertainment.
I had progressed a few levels in Balloon Fight when a massive plate was placed before me. After the initial gargantuan plate, an additional plate with some biscuits and a bowl of gravy. I not-so-silently yelped out "Holy crap!" when I saw it. The two older gentleman next to me looked at it like supermodel Kate Upton being placed on the counter in front of me instead of my breakfast. One of them looked at me and said "I hope you brought your heart medication!" I laughed at his joke, and I began to dig into the feast. As I speared a pepperoni-sized slice of hot-dog, I silently wondered from what mutant oversized hot-dog factory it came from. The omelette itself was light and fluffy, the chili, cheese, and massive chunks of hot-dog added mass to the omelette deliciously. It was all quite magical. After I somehow finished all of the omelette and hash browns I excitedly dove into the biscuits & gravy. The biscuits themselves were okay, but not anything special. The gravy itself was definitely note-worthy, it was full of sausage. Several large chunks were among the creamy bites of gravy and biscuit. After I finished everything, I was absolutely stuffed. The older gentlemen next to me were both impressed with my stomach capacity. I'll admit, I kinda was too.
Over the course of the meal, the girl behind the counter checked in on me, refilled my coffee & water. I had a conversation with my fellow counter-diners about the food here, about local things to see (of which there are none in Acton), and about preparing finances for my retirement. The guy next to me said he was a former IRS agent, and he told me of the adventures of his career. I'd have honestly never thought an IRS agent would have that exciting a career. He also advised me to buy a hat if I was to become a regular, as people wearing hats from the establishment get 20% off their bill. Good idea, but I don't think I'll be a regular anytime soon. This place is great, but a forty mile drive for an omelette, even one as good as this is still a bit much for me right now. I think I'll reserve this place for special occasions.
All in all this place is really great. The staff is friendly, the patrons are friendly, and the food is really great. They've got a wi-fi bubble, but to be honest, I was kind of hoping for a local paper though. Maybe I'll pick one up on the way out next time. read more
