49'er Saloon in Acton has a sign with "est. 1889" although the building in the western frontier style seems much later. There's a down home, country feel to the 49'er Saloon subtly referring to the California gold rush days of yore. Looks like an ideal place for bikers and horse riders. Hearty grub with hints of traditional regional American cuisine and full bar where you will not leave hungry. There's a formal dining room for larger gatherings for families and friends. Great place to eat after scrambling around Vasquez Rocks, visiting Animal Tracks, or just hungry on CA 14 frwy. Just get off the Crown Valley offramp and head due south for about a mile. 1) Wild Game Sausage: Walk On The Wild Side With Jalapeño-Cheddar Stuffed Elk With Roasted Peppers & Onions. Big portion enough for 2 meals since the Elk sausage is so rich. Elk sausage is ground fine and stuffed tightly in the casing for dense, firm texture. You're getting your money's worth. The Jalapeño has a nice, warm piquancy while the Cheddar gives a dairy fermented undertone. The julienned red and green bellpeppers are pleasantly al dente; the onions are caramelized to bring out their sweetness. It's all sautéed in an agrodolce/sweet-sour sauce along with a touch of garlic. 1a) Side dish: Nice little garden salad including green lettuce, diced purple onion, chopped tomato, grated carrot. Chose blue cheese dressing to use for the "Buffalo Burger". 2) "Buffalo Burger" is extra finely ground, plush, velvety Bison meat. So when I ordered it medium rare, the patty turned out mushy. Next time, I will order it medium to firm up and give more of a chaw to the meat. Opted for two slices of not too crispy, meaty bacon. Mayo, tomato, green lettuce leaf, grilled onions, cheddar cheese, dense brioche bun. I spread on the blue cheese dressing to give a little funk to what I thought would be the blood minerality of the Bison meat. It's another substantial dish. 2a) Side dish of standard French fries which was crisp as requested although it didn't quite have that ineffable earthy, mildly sweet, potato flavour 1-2a) Allegiance India Pale Ale, Lancaster CA was a good counter to both food items. Dry, heavy bodied, fruity with scents of orange zest, lacquer, touch of cleansing acidity. 49'er doesn't leave you hungry so didn't have enough room for dessert. I took the Elk sausage home and made sandwiches for two meals. So eating at the 49'er isn't as expensive due to the big portions. 4 stars read more

Food was fabulous! Lots of yummy choices and a vegan menu as well. Bartender makes some delicious martinis. I was able to bring my 2 large dogs, sat on the back patio where they were served water and Bark-a-Roo Burger patties and I had a steak salad. I totally recommend this place. read more

This is a catch up review from September 2024, better late than never! My friends and I were going to venture to Bloom Ranch Organic Peach Orchard to gather peaches, unfortunately it was too late in the season but I managed to get some vacuum packed frozen ones. We decided on this place for lunch and it felt like an old town tavern surrounded by booths and wood panels. They have a full bar and I decided on the Purple Gecko tequila drink. It was good but it lacked in presentation, instead of a tall purple drink, I was presented with a very short stubby drink, as if it was an afterthought. The French phrase Garde manger, comes to mind but in this case it should be Garde boire. Meaning your eyes are attracted to a well presented dish but in this case a drink. The butter hamburger was excellent, it was well presented. We'll be back mid August which is peach season and will let you know how it goes. read more

Excellent service. They were willing to accommodate my big group and worked with us to split the checks and everything. We mostly just did apps and drinks. The portions on the apps were HUGE so none of us had room leftover to order an entree afterwards. Drinks were also great, although maybe a little on the small side. They also have some frozen drink options which I personally always love. Overall it's got a very "hidden gem" feel to it and I'm torn between letting everyone know how much this place rocks and keeping it as my own lil secret spot to take big groups to. But either way, highly recommended. Really though, you go here cause you'll see the same faces working and they actually care about the food you eat and the experience you have. read more

What a fun spot. My husband and I stopped here on a day of exploring and had a nice little meal. I love the country vibe. I think I spotted a real cowboy in the dining room! We sat outside because it was a lovely warm day. There were some regulars on the patio playing loud music but that didn't bother us. We liked their music choices, and they were thoughtful enough to ask if the music was ok. Husband and I split a burger, which was huge and juicy. We ordered corn fritters and he said they were just like the ones his mom used to make. My favorite was the corn bread. The fried apples were also delicious. They aren't exactly fried. More like sauteed with caramalized sugar. They taste like pie. The bathroom floor was a little sticky but this is also a bar so I'm not going to be too picky about that. The wait staff were incredible friendly and welcoming. We would definitely come here again. read more

What a delightful surprise. We were served by Cecelia - who is a delight and just full of knowledge about the community. Although rustic, it is clean and comfy. The menu is pretty great - they can accommodate for vegetarian and vegan diets and they cater. But we were craving burgers - and these were good! I had the butter burger and the Hubbs had the bison burger. My side salad with house made poppy seed dressing was really good. The burgers were cooked perfectly to order and the brioche buns were soft and sturdy. The fries were perfectly extra-crispy. We took a bread pudding to go. Really a highlight stop. read more

It had been several years since I had been to the 49'r. It is being run by a husband & wife team who are doing their best to make it work. It's definitely a locals place. The place was fairly empty and it took a while to get service. Which was ok. They have a full bar. My wife ordered a mixed drink and I went for beer on tap. Both were good. The menu hasn't changed in years and I ordered what I was familiar with. The butter burger is a favorite of mine and I decided to try another one. The burger was good and had a bunch of flavor. And although my bun was toasted, it was cold. I ordered it medium and it was closer to rare. Which was fine for me as I hate over cooked hamburgers. I remembered their onions rings from the past were fantastic, so I replaced my fries with onion rings. The rings were fantastic and huge. They did not disappoint. My wife ordered the spicy bbq chicken sandwich. The chicken on the sandwich was a bit tough, and the bun was cold. but otherwise the sandwich was good. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable, although some of the tables are small if you have more than 2 people. Also the temperature inside the restaurant was a bit cool. Overall a nice meal and I will probably go back. read more

Excellent food and great service! Great staff and and an owner who actually cares about cooking/serving great good and drinks and enjoys meeting and talking with his guests. Great place to eat!!! My wife and I went to the 49er for the first time earlier this evening. Large menu with varied selections. Jennifer was our waitress and did a great job. I had an excellent ribeye cooked what I call "rare for real" with a cool red center, with sides of green beans and an excellent loaded baked potato. My wife had an excellent salmon salad. We split a huge side of very good cornbread with butter and honey. Larry Krask (owner along with his wife Cecilia) came out and introduced himself, because he actually wanted to meet the diner who actually ordered his steak "rare for real". We enjoyed a very nice conversation with Larry and look forward to going back again and again. Lots of items on the menu, and we're looking forward to enjoying them. read more

This establishment is located in the heart of Acton in a town that still looks like the Wild West. It seems like a place where all the locals visit. My interaction with visiting here was for a Christmas toy run. The front of the business does look a bit rundown but that adds to the "we've been here a while and the locals love us" vibe. I was there at 12p on a Saturday morning so there wasn't a lot going on but it seemed like there was stage equipment stored away so maybe they have live music? The staff was very welcoming and nice. The bar area was neat and had money attached to the area above the bar. Our food for some reason took a minute to get to us but we ordered a BLT sandwich. The flavor was good and the bacon was thick and juicy. We had coffee and a root beer. The coffee while had good flavor was a bit weak. To sum it up, it's not a top quality place to visit, but it's a hometown biker type destination. Enjoy! read more

I've since moved away from this area but I come back to the 49er whenever I'm in the AV - they still have the BEST chicken tenders I've ever tasted and their homemade dressings are unmatched. Larry and Cecilia are genuinely amazing people who make everybody feel like a welcome member of their family. I miss being able to pop in once or twice a month but I look forward to seeing them whenever I pass through! I've tried almost everything on the menu - even rattlesnake when it was in season! We've played the jukebox and sang along, watched old westerns, heck - they even put on the Dodgers game for us a couple of times. read more

We were in a huge scavenger hunt, and one of the clues sent us to the 49er Saloon. After taking a picture outside, we decided to stop in for dinner. I did not have high expectations. The inside was very warm, so we opted to sit outside (which felt lovely). The server had a great personality! 4/5 - Wild Game Sausage: Pheasant sausage with garlic butter pasta. The sausage was unexpectedly juicy and had a great flavor. 4/5 - Corn Fritters: Huge portion! Served with a syrup drizzle. 2 of the fritters were raw in the middle, but the rest were really yummy 4/5 - House-Baked Bread Pudding: It was really good, but I don't prefer it with chocolate inside. If they had put raisins though, I would have LOVED it! 3/5 - Ribeye Steak: Come with 2 sides of your choice. The flavor and the texture of the meat were very good, but they did overcook it... on each of the 3 we ordered. 3/5 - Loaded Baked Potato: With butter, cheddar cheese, sour cream and green onions. They were VERY heavy handed with the cheese. It was a bit too much. The cheese came in huge clumps and was hard to mix with the potatos. 3/5 - Rocky Mountain Oysters: Bull testicles (in case you didn't know). First time trying this. It was not offensive in taste or texture. It just tasted like thin fried meat. 2/5 - Fried Apples: Not exactly what I expected. The apples still have their skin on, but it worked. It says that they're fried, but I think they mean pan fried like pot stickers are. They have been caramelized to a brittle point. I couldn't event get everything out of that cup because it was so stuck in the sweet toffee. The food came out to 3.3 stars. I am bumping it up to 4 because they have some very unique food options and I'd ask for less cooking on their steak. It was definitely much better than we expected! read more

A saloon with history back to the 1870s that has a pet friendly patio AND an extensive / impressive separate vegan menu! I moved north of the San Gabriel mountains last year and love the atmosphere but have been underwhelmed with the vegan offerings out here. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I stumble on the 49er menu and Immediately hop in my car to check it out. Turns out they introduced an impossible burger first which then lead to bigger orders of the product that allowed them to use it as a means to veganize some of their other house specials such as meatloaf, shepherd's pie, meatballs and more. So far I've tried the pulled pork sandwich and meatloaf and let me say- they are both fantastic but that meatloaf is in a class all it's own. The portion is HUGE. Service is wonderful and the patron are friendly. This place really is perfect in my book. read more

5 of us stopped by on a Saturday at 11:30 to check out the place for an event we are having in June. The waitress was great but everything else was a disaster. It took more than an hour after we were seated to get our food. I got a Buffalo burger and water and it ended up being $26. The burger had absolutely no taste, A could of other's sandwich selection had bacon and the bacon was not cooked! We will not be back but glad we checked it out before we brought a group in. I have never been here before, so this place was new for me and my family. It was pretty vacant for a Sunday morning, but that was OK with us because it seemed like we had the whole place to ourselves. There was only one waitress that was working. Even though she was very sweet and nice, she obviously was new and kept forgetting to bring us things to the table. It took a while to get our food and it seemed as if this place is more popular at night with the drinking crowd because the clientele that were coming in, we're drinking pretty heavily for "after church hours." I ordered the top sirloin steak medium rare, but it was delivered well done. The mashed potatoes that came with my plate were also stone cold as if it had been sitting there for quite some time in the kitchen. The appetizer that we did eat, was actually very good, so next time: I will just come for a drink, appetizers and lunch item. This place also had no breakfast menu or breakfast items. I haven't tried their entire menu, but I don't think I'll be going back. Service was nice, staff was friendly. The ambiance was nice. Western themed.... However, the floors were sticky, when walking. I have to start off by saying that I've working in the industry since 2006. My expectations are high. I've worked fast food, fine dining, gastropubs, hotels, etc. so to have sticky floors, was just not the best first impression. Our waitress was very kind and friendly. Acknowledged my children. She is the reason I'm giving 3 stars. My husband ordered chili. I ordered the western burger, my kids had chicken tenders. My husbands chili (wish I had a picture) was just beans, it was dry, no sauce or broth. That's was so disappointing. My burger, and I get people like that "wow" factor, but it was too big to bite with the onion rings stacked like that. They would probably so better with the thinly sliced crispy onions. I removed the onions and my burger patty was grey. Not even crispy from being on the flat top or on a grill. It's like they cooked it in a pan or microwave. It was just grey, so seasoning, no color. My kids chicken tenders were fine. If it's one thing you learn when working in the kitchen, is how to tell when the fry oil needs to be changed. My kids chicken tenders were dark, not golden brown, dark. That fry oil NEEDED to be changed. I don't even want to talk about the state of the kitchen when I walked by to use the restroom. TBH I wanted to jump in and help them clean it up. Maybe I'm being too harsh, maybe my standards are just too high. I think with some fine tuning and some cleaning up, it could be better. Maybe I went on a "off" day. If that's the case, then maybe some retraining needs to take place. Who knows. read more

Someone recommended me this place while I stopped nearby during my PCT hike. I'm glad I listened! Their bison burger is out-of-this-world amazing. The salad they make as an alternative to french fries is huge and delicious. The beer selection on tap was pretty decent, the server was great, and one of the TVs played the Showtime movie channel, on mute but with subtitles. (The Martian is such a good movie.) Overall, this place met every expectation I had for a burger stop. Highly recommended. :) read more
