Le Chêne meaning "the oak" in French has a venerable history near Agua Dulce starting off as Oaks Garage & Refreshment Stand, a wooden building, in 1917. In 1923, the familiar river rock house was erected and slowly morphed into a diner, truck stop. In 1980, Chef Juan Alfonso took over and continues to this day as a French restaurant where rustic California Oak trees dominate in the back of the property. Sunday between 2-7pm for Happy Hour is ideal for being able to nosh on small nibbles for a 25% discount at the bar. HH is also Tuesday-Friday 4:30-7pm. Only exception is on "holidays". HH: 1) Jamón Serrano: Spanish cured ham thinly sliced. Deeply red brown, meaty, with a fermented, salty sweet porkiness and bit of luscious fat ringing the edges. Cornichons, and summer ripened honey dew melon respectively added a pickled, acidic crunch, and dulcet, fruit, juiciness. Not as fat marbled, plush and deeply porky as Jamón Ibérico de Bellota where pigs are fattened on forest strewn acorns, but still a nice nosh. 2) Shrimp Escoffier: Three plump, moist shrimp tail on in a creamy, buttery Sauce Velouté enriched by dulcet Jerez with its sweet, woody, oxidized fermentation. Velouté was sopped up by slices of the house Bread. Btw, Georges Auguste Escoffier (1846-1935) was a legendary French culinary artist known as "the king of chefs and the chef of kings." 3) Stuffed Mushrooms: Button Mushrooms topped with tomato tasting mostly of French thyme and whisper of garlic swimming in olive oil, baked till soft in a metal escargot pan. 1-3a) Claudia's Grenache, Reyes Winery, Agua Dulce, Ca 2014: Mellow, full bodied red, blackberry with a brown sugar toastiness due to hot summer temperatures. Lower acidity and tannins. Steve, the bartender, was very accommodating and thoughtful in a casual friendly way. When I asked for a wine recommendation to pair with the 3 dishes leaning toward a light red, he let me sample 2 wines to decide for myself. Dinner 5-9pm: 4) Black Bean Soup: Black beans are puréed in chicken broth enriched by cream. Pepped up by fresh ground black pepper. 5) Canard à l'Orange: Extra meaty, substantial duck in a well toned, solid, compact body. Duck was a touch over baked so the meat lost its lushness and dried out the duck, but still acceptable. The skin is crisped and finished in high heat with Grand Marnier orange liqueur. The sauce seems to be a combination of duck pan juices, touch of orange juice, and Grand Marnier for a sweet, citrus fattiness. Garnished with poached orange segments and refreshing orange slices. 5a) Bit over cooked, soft carrots tossed in sugar, salt, & butter. 5b) Pommes Dauphinoise: Potato au Gratin is slices of boiled potato in rich cream and well aged cheese. Touched with earthy garlic and baked to allow all the flavours to infuse. Couldn't sense a soupçon of nutmeg in Le Chêne version, but decadently, very excellent. 4-5b) Claudia's Grenache 6 Soufflé au Chocolat: Fluffy, airy, slightly gooey, very chocolate forward classic French dessert. The sides of the ceramic ramekin became extra hot so the outer perimeter of the Soufflé was crispy. Watery chocolate sauce for extra chocolatiness. Overall a good, old school version of bistrot French. Hearty, cuisine bourgeoise. Staff is responsive and attempts to be proactive. I came to Le Chêne in 1987, but the food didn't impress me enough for me come back. Fast forward to 2026, Le Chêne is worth returning especially in the dark winter months when good solid food seems so de riguer. 4- stars read more

La Chene offers a wonderful dining experience focusing on French cuisine for residents of Santa Clarita and beyond. We started out with Happy Hour at the bar and enjoyed some outstanding food and drink. Complimentary bread and butter were served right away. Then, our appetizers came out one after another, perfectly cooked and delicious. The charcuterie plate and stuffed mushrooms were my favorites. We then adjourned to our table for dinner. The atmosphere is so elegant and relaxing in the dining room, with wonderful views of native oaks. My trout almondine was perfectly cooked and the green salad was well-seasoned. We shared a chocolate soufflé which was a wonderful sweet conclusion to the meal. Because I had eaten so much at Happy Hour, I did take part of my meal home with me. You could do worse than making Happy Hour your dining destination alone! Service was universally wonderful. Years ago, we used to drive past Le Chêne in Agua Dulce and I'd always wonder, "Who would build a French restaurant way out here in the middle of nowhere?" Now I know! The Spanish owner trained at culinary school in France, and it shows in every bite. The food is beautifully prepared, authentically French, and the béarnaise sauce was absolutely delicious. Overall, this was a nice experience. I had the fillet mignon with Roquefort topping. The topping was more like a sauce and I had expected just melted cheese, but it was pretty good. The steak was excellent and cooked just right. The only disappointment was the salad. We had the hearts of palm salad as an appetizer and it was just four pieces of hearts of palm and a couple of tomato halves on the plate, not very attractive, but it tasted OK. I've had better at several places. Then, the side salad was nothing but arugula with a half of a small slice of tomato. For a restaurant that boasts of their French cuisine and for the price they charge for the meals, it seems they could come up with something a little bit more tasty and original. So my boyfriend and I went to Le Chêne last night to meet his brother and wife for dinner... and whew, where do I start? Not trying to be rude, but this place felt like it's been frozen in time -- serving what I can only describe as "senior French cuisine." My "salad" was literally a chunk of lettuce with oil, salt, pepper, and one lonely tomato slice sitting on top like it gave up. The crab cakes? Way too fishy. Everything just tasted... tired. Next I want to try the beef bourguignon. Lobster ravioli. The sauce is good. But the ravioli tastes previously frozen.... Just be aware. Is it bad? No not at all. Would I order it again? Nope. French onion soup. Traditional and properly made. The broth is not to salty and perfectly savory. Onions caramelized to perfection. Cheese over bread melted perfectly. I HIGHLY recommend their onion soup. Duck. So I've had it two different times. The first time it was so dry I couldn't eat it. Second time it was PERFECT. I don't know if it was an off day or what the first time. Seemed busy as heck so maybe it was overlooked/overcooked. Overall this is a fantastic restaurant. Le Chene was such a treat for me, as a first-timer. Yes, this French Restaurant was far from my house, but it was worth the trip! The staff was kind and friendly. The atmosphere made me feel like I was on vacation in an unfamiliar place. The food was really good. My friend and I took another friend for her birthday and Le Chene was certainly a great choice! They have free parking and a bar (we didn't sit at it, so I don't know if it is a service bar only). We ordered cocktails, to start our evening right, and then an appetizer to share. All of our meals were good. We loved our cowgirl waitress. She was very personable. The hosts said to come back. I wonder if they get enough business out near Vasquez Rocks. We actually made a whole afternoon of our trip to Le Chene by arriving early and then wine tasting at Agua Dulce Winery, just down the road. We had so much fun. I recommend this place. First time trying this place, I'll admit I was a little disappointed. Not with the entire meal, but definitely with the the main entree, duck l'orange. I've had this dish in other French restaurants so I had something to compare it to. Sadly the sauce tasted generic and the meat was very tough. The broccoli puree side tasted wrong, or spoiled. So in my humble opinion do not recommend this dish. I also tried their escargot while was flavorful, but I understand it may not be for everyone. The stone building is surrounded by gardens and a vineyard. This French restaurant serves duck bore frog legs snails beef buffalo in a variety of French sauces. If you want a chocolate soufflé order when you order your meal. I enjoyed a New York steak escargot a salad and sides. This restaurant has been written up in Eatter for its wines. Our first time to Le Chen for lunch. It was absolutely amazing. The four entrées we all ordered were salmon, filet mignon, pork chop, and the strawberry chicken. Each of these entrées were the best I've ever tasted, and the service was amazing to boot. I suggested they change their name to cotton candy because everything melted in my mouth. The owners Juan and Claudia are there to greet you as you walk in and come to the table to make sure everything is OK. It's an amazing family oriented top of the line restaurant. Exceptional were the words we used for everything today - the escargot, the duck pate, butternut squash soup, steak au poivre (cooked to perfection with a silky sauce) and creme brulee (with a perfect crack) and Charlotte- both shared as desserts. The dining experience was stellar with friendly staff who gave great food advice when we inquired and were the perfect amount of attentive. The owner stopped by the table to thank us for our patronage and we were able to thank him for giving us so many wonderful experiences over the last 25 years - he's been providing them to guests for 45 years. I feel horrible leaving this review but I feel like I should let people know our experience & they can choose whether to save a trip or not. We were so excited to try this French place! I'm French & from France so I couldn't have been any more excited to support a restaurant that seemed like it would be authentic. We liked the ambiance. Super chill even with the loud romantic music. Sometimes the classical music went hard it was hilarious lol However.... THIS PLACE TASTED LIKE I WENT TO EAT AT A CAFETERIA or a diner like Mel's. Actually Mel's taste better than this honestly. I was surprised the menu had no description of anything or what it came with. Luckily for me I speak french so I understand from the item name like "au poivre" which by the way, my steak came covered in some horrible cheap gravy which hid the filet mignon. What a way to ruin such a good cut. I wasn't expecting gravy all over it & I shouldn't need to ask the waiter every detail of how a dish is going to be presented. We asked what it came with & the server said "Today you will get potato au gratin & some vegetables" I don't remember his exact description/wording - but to go to a restaurant & to be told what we're eating as sides vs us having options (Iike any other regular restaurant) is crazy. Again, just like going to a cafeteria. We ordered the escargot. Horrible. Normally escargot dish is drenched in butter with herbs. This was drenched in olive oil as if it was an oil herb dip for bread at olive garden. Had no flavor. Just tasted like olive oil lol Next we had the French onion soup. Just as bad. It was watered down. Just felt like they didn't caramelize the onion long enough bc normally the soup is a dark rich brown. This was mostly grey water. Even if this was premade, they should probably change vendors. The French onion soup at Costco tastes more authentic than whatever this restaurant was serving. The good thing about the soup was that they put ALOT of cheese on top. I think I saw somewhere it was Swiss cheese? Idk. But it definitely wasn't Gruyère which is why they were able to go all out since Gruyère is generally a more expensive cheese. The entrée was how I described it earlier. Filet mignon covered in some gravy packet sauce. Ruined! The potatoes were so salty. They tasted like the boxed potato au gratin you get at the grocery store. And the zucchini cuts tasted like it was for the elderly who have no teeth at the hospital. Extra small and mushy. Each time our plates/silverware were taken, they were not replaced to the point that by the time my steak came, I had to ask for a fork and knife again. TO MAKE OUR EXPERIENCE WORSE, we came on a Sunday at around 7p I believe. It was slow. Maybe 2 other tables were there finishing up. By 8:15ish, we were the only ones left. We were finishing waiting to see our server to ask for the bill. Right before we saw him, they cut out the music at 830p. Omg. That was the worse thing you can do to a business. We were already about to be on our way out, but the sign says they close at 9p. We were enjoying the bottle of wine we bought & finishing the last of it while waiting for the server. We actually liked that no other guests were there because it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. But we were not milking the time & we were just waiting to see our server for the bill so we can be on our way out and to hear them just cut the music abruptly killed the whole experience and ambiance so fast, knowing it was only 830p. It was now so AWKWARDLY SILENT & you can HEAR THE CRACKS IN THE FLOOR WHEN STAFF WAS WALKING. Horrible. We understand the staff wanted to go home but your sign says you close at 9p. Cut the music off at 9p. Not 830p! Especially when we haven't asked for the bill yet. We came here for our 11th Anniversary hoping this would be our new anniversary & brunch spot but I don't think either of us have any intention on coming back. This place is very expensive. The price is not an issue for us. But for how much our dinner cost, we would rather go to Mastros or Boa Steakhouse who have comparable pricing where we can choose what we want to eat, where they don't tell us what we will be eating for that day. I would not recommend this place. Cutting off the music before we left was probably the worse part of our whole experience. Update: The escargot was definitely made with olive oil that day. We'll have to agree to disagree. I also never said you push people out. The music was also not going in & out and was fine until the music was shut off. I also never claimed to be an expert on food I was explaining my experience with the food here. But with that being said, my mom was a chef at the Four Seasons & went to Le Cordon Bleu back when we lived in Paris in the 80s, 90s so I do know a bit of what french cuisine is & this wasn't it. read more
