So my boyfriend and I went to Le Chêne last night to meet his brother and wife for dinner... and whew, where do I start? Next I want to try the beef bourguignon. Lobster ravioli. The sauce is good. But the ravioli tastes previously frozen.... Just be aware. Is it bad? No not at all. Would I order it again? Nope. French onion soup. Traditional and properly made. The broth is not to salty and perfectly savory. Onions caramelized to perfection. Cheese over bread melted perfectly. I HIGHLY recommend their onion soup. Duck. So I've had it two different times. The first time it was so dry I couldn't eat it. Second time it was PERFECT. I don't know if it was an off day or what the first time. Seemed busy as heck so maybe it was overlooked/overcooked. Overall this is a fantastic restaurant. They've been here for over 40 years and obviously there's a good reason they've stayed in business that long. The food is good. The seating is great. Atmosphere is great. First time trying this place, I'll admit I was a little disappointed. Not with the entire meal, but definitely with the the main entree, duck l'orange. I've had this dish in other French restaurants so I had something to compare it to. Sadly the sauce tasted generic and the meat was very tough. The broccoli puree side tasted wrong, or spoiled. So in my humble opinion do not recommend this dish. I also tried their escargot while was flavorful, but I understand it may not be for everyone. Got seated right along the window overlooking into the garden patio area. View is quite nice and serene which makes it for a nice meal. The service was great. Our waitress was very informative in the menu and what was offered. Menu was quite impressive with all the French favorites. There was something for everyone which is great. Also the wine list was quite impressive as well. The French onion slick was great, and plenty of cheese which was the cream on top. Seafood pasta was nice with plenty of chunks of seafood and I believe the pasta was homemade. The beef bourguignon was very flavorful. Plenty chunks of meat. My wife and I have been coming to Le Chene for over 30 years and the food never disappoints. Juan and Claudia treat every customer as if they are family and often greet guests as they arrive. Sunday brunch is our favorite but there are times when we spend the day there sampling the menu and enjoying wine from their large selection. Whiskey and Bourbon fans have a choice of top shelf libations as well in their full bar. We often take a glass of vino onto the oak dotted grounds to take in a breath of fresh air by the windmill and reminisce about the weddings, birthdays, and events we've shared here. Our first time to Le Chen for lunch. It was absolutely amazing. The four entrées we all ordered were salmon, filet mignon, pork chop, and the strawberry chicken. Each of these entrées were the best I've ever tasted, and the service was amazing to boot. I suggested they change their name to cotton candy because everything melted in my mouth. I feel horrible leaving this review but I feel like I should let people know our experience & they can choose whether to save a trip or not. We were so excited to try this French place! I'm French & from France so I couldn't have been any more excited to support a restaurant that seemed like it would be authentic. We liked the ambiance. Super chill even with the loud romantic music. Sometimes the classical music went hard it was hilarious lol However.... THIS PLACE TASTED LIKE I WENT TO EAT AT A CAFETERIA or a diner like Mel's. Actually Mel's taste better than this honestly. I was surprised the menu had no description of anything or what it came with. Luckily for me I speak french so I understand from the item name like "au poivre" which by the way, my steak came covered in some horrible cheap gravy which hid the filet mignon. What a way to ruin such a good cut. I wasn't expecting gravy all over it & I shouldn't need to ask the waiter every detail of how a dish is going to be presented. We asked what it came with & the server said "Today you will get potato au gratin & some vegetables" I don't remember his exact description/wording - but to go to a restaurant & to be told what we're eating as sides vs us having options (Iike any other regular restaurant) is crazy. Again, just like going to a cafeteria. We ordered the escargot. Horrible. Normally escargot dish is drenched in butter with herbs. This was drenched in olive oil as if it was an oil herb dip for bread at olive garden. Had no flavor. Just tasted like olive oil lol Next we had the French onion soup. Just as bad. It was watered down. Just felt like they didn't caramelize the onion long enough bc normally the soup is a dark rich brown. This was mostly grey water. Even if this was premade, they should probably change vendors. The French onion soup at Costco tastes more authentic than whatever this restaurant was serving. The good thing about the soup was that they put ALOT of cheese on top. I think I saw somewhere it was Swiss cheese? Idk. But it definitely wasn't Gruyère which is why they were able to go all out since Gruyère is generally a more expensive cheese. The entrée was how I described it earlier. Filet mignon covered in some gravy packet sauce. Ruined! The potatoes were so salty. They tasted like the boxed potato au gratin you get at the grocery store. And the zucchini cuts tasted like it was for the elderly who have no teeth at the hospital. Extra small and mushy. Each time our plates/silverware were taken, they were not replaced to the point that by the time my steak came, I had to ask for a fork and knife again. TO MAKE OUR EXPERIENCE WORSE, we came on a Sunday at around 7p I believe. It was slow. Maybe 2 other tables were there finishing up. By 8:15ish, we were the only ones left. We were finishing waiting to see our server to ask for the bill. Right before we saw him, they cut out the music at 830p. Omg. That was the worse thing you can do to a business. We were already about to be on our way out, but the sign says they close at 9p. We were enjoying the bottle of wine we bought & finishing the last of it while waiting for the server. We actually liked that no other guests were there because it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. But we were not milking the time & we were just waiting to see our server for the bill so we can be on our way out and to hear them just cut the music abruptly killed the whole experience and ambiance so fast, knowing it was only 830p. It was now so AWKWARDLY SILENT & you can HEAR THE CRACKS IN THE FLOOR WHEN STAFF WAS WALKING. Horrible. We understand the staff wanted to go home but your sign says you close at 9p. Cut the music off at 9p. Not 830p! Especially when we haven't asked for the bill yet. We came here for our 11th Anniversary hoping this would be our new anniversary & brunch spot but I don't think either of us have any intention on coming back. This place is very expensive. The price is not an issue for us. But for how much our dinner cost, we would rather go to Mastros or Boa Steakhouse who have comparable pricing where we can choose what we want to eat, where they don't tell us what we will be eating for that day. I would not recommend this place. Cutting off the music before we left was probably the worse part of our whole experience. Update: The escargot was definitely made with olive oil that day. We'll have to agree to disagree. I also never said you push people out. The music was also not going in & out and was fine until the music was shut off. I also never claimed to be an expert on food I was explaining my experience with the food here. Exceptional were the words we used for everything today - the escargot, the duck pate, butternut squash soup, steak au poivre (cooked to perfection with a silky sauce) and creme brulee (with a perfect crack) and Charlotte- both shared as desserts. The dining experience was stellar with friendly staff who gave great food advice when we inquired and were the perfect amount of attentive. The owner stopped by the table to thank us for our patronage and we were able to thank him for giving us so many wonderful experiences over the last 25 years - he's been providing them to guests for 45 years. What a local treasure he is! Please go - enjoy this gem. It's a generational treasure for many families and we realized today that we need to make it more of a priority to enjoy even though it's a distance for us now - so worth it. The food and ambience here is great. I visited here several times after doing wine tasting nearby in Agua Dulce. The first time we visited here, the owner/chef came over and introduced himself and recommended some great items off the menu. The food was fresh and unique with mix of French and Spanish Italian items. The owner also makes his own wine that was really great that we ended up taking a case home ( Juan's Red -wine ) . The stone building is surrounded by gardens and a vineyard. This French restaurant serves duck bore frog legs snails beef buffalo in a variety of French sauces. If you want a chocolate soufflé order when you order your meal. I enjoyed a New York steak escargot a salad and sides. This restaurant has been written up in Eatter for its wines. This little gem is secluded in the Angelus National Forest, and quite remote. The service was excellent. We went on a Tuesday evening, with a reservation, although we probably didn't need one. I imagine weekends are a bit more crowded, and a reservation would be recommended. The food was amazing! We had the Escargot, French Onion Soup and the Crab Cake as appetizers. Our mains were Tenderloin Tip Béarnaise, for my wife, while I throughly enjoyed the Seafood Pasta, which both came with a salad or soup. The meal portions were much larger than we expected from a French restaurant. I had one drink, which was their version of a Scorpion, which as a "Tikiphile", I can't recommend. My wife liked her Cosmopolitan very much, which was not actually on the menu. There is a full bar. The restaurant is clean, quiet and refreshingly bright. Attire recommended is "Casual", but I would feel uncomfortable if we weren't wearing nice "Smart Casual" clothing, but to each their own. The parking is plentiful, and it's a self-parking situation.
