My family and I visited the UC Berkeley library last weekend and got quite hungry while we were there. There's no shortage of places to eat in downtown Berkeley - the dilemma is where to go. We were in the mood for a nice sandwich and a few of the other places along the street seemed either overpriced or not that appealing. Although I've never heard of crave subs, their prices looked very reasonable and their sandwiches seemed like they would be pretty good. Everyone working there was really friendly and the cashier took my order, which was for one of their chicken sandwiches. My wife and son shared a larger chicken sandwich. I think it was called the Tom and Jerry. Cute name that brings back childhood memories watching cartoons on Saturday mornings. The outside of the restaurant has a nice view of the main street and they had plenty of outdoor seating. My favorite parts of the sandwich was the tender juicy flavor of the chicken along with the perfect crisp of the Dutch crunch bread. I really enjoyed eating this sandwich and finished it pretty quickly. It left me feeling full and satisfied without breaking the bank which is a plus. My only suggestion is that they temper back some of the sauce. There was so much of their house sauce on there that it overshadowed the natural flavor of the chicken and made the sandwich kind of soggy towards the end. It wasn't enough to prevent me from thoroughly enjoying the sandwich, but I would have preferred a little less sauce. If you're in the area and looking for a quick bite to eat that won't set you back hundreds of dollars, stop by crave subs and you won't be disappointed. I'm pretty sure that anything you order there will taste just as good as what I had. When I am near the Berkeley library again, I'll probably stop here to eat lunch. read more

Ahh, the sandwich. It is now a staple in the lives of many busy Americans who want quick food to eat on the go. Came back recently during COVID pandemic. Wanted a cheap place to get food from during my lunch break. Placed my order online for pickup and food was ready in about 10-15 minutes. Think the menu has expanded, with a lot more options to choose from, ranging from vegan, vegetarian, to protein-filled, Halal meat sandwiches. For each sandwich, you can also pick the bread, i.e. sourdough, wheat, gluten free, french, and dutch crutch. And if you feel like it, pair the sandwich up with the sides (tater tots, wings, etc), chips, and beverages that they offer! Food-wise, place is just as good as I last remembered. Sandwiches are humongous, great value for ~$10. Quality and quantity is definitely much better than your average Subway. Each sandwich is packed with generous amounts of veggies and meat. There's also plenty of sauce in each bite, provides great flavor! Only reason why I'm taking off a star is because the sandwiches we ordered were soggy; wrapper practically was a mop sopping all the liquid/juices from the sandwich. Would I come back? Definitely! My son really liked the decor of the cartoons especially Toy Story and I personally loved seeing the DBZ characters. I got the Tom & Jerry Sandwich and my husband got the Goku Black with curly fries. I'm never in the mood for sandwiches unless I'm already eating them and they always end up delicious. But then I've found myself craving (AHA UNINTENTIONAL FORTUITOUS PUN) Crave Subs' sandwiches. As a vegan, it's SO nice to have a convenient vegan category on the menu so we don't have to read every single ingredient. It's also great that there are vegan ingredient substitutions rather than having to completely remove the finer things in life like cheese. My favorites are the Vegan Samurai Jack and Vegan Goku. The only difference is the sauce and I'm fine with it and would gladly order both on many occasions. It's IMPOSSIBLE to find parking because of its location and there is frequently traffic in the area from double-parking food delivery services. Because of this, I tend to contribute to traffic with food delivery services too (oops) but I recommend having their curly fries for dine-in or takeout only. I've never been to a place with so many sandwich options -- the menu stretches across the wall, with plenty of options for meat-eaters, vegans, and vegetarians. The sandwiches are all so well crafted and the flavor combos are so creative and something that would take me too much time to put together myself. Almost all of the subs I've tried from here blew my mind -- I cherished each bite. My favorites are the sandwiches with pesto and avocado. Specifically the Wazowski. Crave subs was a great choice for getting 75 subs to feed a team and families after a game at Cal. The common theme with the feedback we received was "this was the best sandwich I've had in a long time". Coordinating with the catering manager Mohammed was seamless, and there was not one messed up order out of the 76 total sandwiches we ordered. FIRST THINGS FIRST! Based on the previous negative reviews, my advice to those people is if you're cheap and money is an issue for you then make your own food at home! Seen many Instagram advertising of this place for many months to where I said I guess it's time for me to see if it's worth the hype, hit up a friend and drove from South San Francisco. Place looks nice and the cashier was very professional, nice and patient since we didn't know what to get. I got the Patrick star that comes with fried chicken and my friend got the Reuben which was pastrami I think, we split the sandwich in half and shared our half's with each other to try both. And OMG the Korean bbq sauce and the other sauces that come with both sandwiches gave it such a delicious flavor, the bread was so soft and fresh and worked well, the chicken and pastrami were fresh and did not taste frozen and till now I can't wait to be there again soon. For some reason, my order of 1 and 1/2 sub took 45 minutes to get ahold of and when I got ahold of my sub, which was a vegan option as it used a plant-based meat alternative, they really skimped on it as I got 1 slice of meatless turkey for my half sub. Everything else was lettuce, tomato, and sauce. My partner's sub with meat; fully loaded, and was quite delicious. My experiences here were a total hit or miss. one order everything would be great, the next, a total flop. I wanted this to be a fair review so I waited until I'd tried this place three times. SO: No, no, and no. This is what happens when you create sandwiches for the 'gram instead of for flavor. Red flag #1 is an infinity of cutesy names for each sandwich, something suspiciously similar to another popular-but-mediocre sandwicherie that you might know about. Do you know what the sandwiches at, say, Gregoire are named? They don't have names! They are just given descriptions. If you get a sandwich called Patrick Star from Crave, then I guess you get what you deserve. Same with a Pikachu or a Lisa Simpson et cetera. This is stunt food. This place uses Dutch Crunch rolls to cover up the blah of the insides of their sandwiches. My final sandwich from this place contained unchewable strips of what kind of looked like bacon. It is hard to decide what to order here! Crave Subs offers halal, vegetarian, and vegan subs. Crave Subs rivals Ike's across the street and even serves a lollipop with your sandwich but the vegan options are far more diverse and the prices are slightly cheaper, especially since you can choose to purchase a half sized sandwich. I have to say, service is much faster too. The first time I was here, I got a Vegan Shaggy full sized sub and was served in under 10 minutes. The second time, I ordered a half sized Vegan Charmander sub and was served in about 5 minutes. Keep in mind that both times, there were people who had come in before me and they still managed to make my sandwich quickly! As for the sandwiches, they're pretty good but not incredible. This has got to be one of the BEST FREAKING SANDWICH SPOTS IN THE BAY! I usually go for the Patrick star on Dutch roll and my mouth literally waters after I order because I know I will be feeling happy and full after the half-wich. The staff is always so pleasant and I really like that you can call in to have the order ready, especially due to parking limitations. They have vegetarian and I believe vegan options as well. Walking into the small 7-seater restaurant, I couldn't help but notice the long list of sandwiches listed on the wall. Being Vegan-friendly, they had everything from chicken and turkey. My favorite was that Popcorn chicken sammich; good Lawd! Who would have known that a simple sandwich could taste so dang good!? The customer service was on point from the time I walked into the time I left. I was greeted by a young man who gave phenomenal tips on what sandwich was good. It's really hard NOT to draw the comparison to Ike's sandwich since it's so similar. They even put lollipops into your sandwich bag lol. However, the big difference between Ike's and Crave is that Crave is fully halal whereas only the chicken is halal at Ike's. Crave also let's you get half sandwiches. I ended up getting 2 half sandwiches: The Iron Man Sub(pastrami) and Tom and Jerry(pulled chicken). They were both really good to my surprise! I would still slightly prefer to have sandwiches from Ike's because the dutch crunch is better but it's not that big of a deal to me. For it to be 100% with tons and tons of options, it's more than enough. I would definitely come here again. The service was also A+.
