Ruby's Cafe is a quaint cafe serving light breakfast and lunch options during the week. The owner and staff are always super friendly, but exercise good timing or you might find yourself in sizable line during the lunch rush. After popping in for post-gym coffees for over a year, I decided it was finally time to try one of their sandwiches. I was feeling something light that day, so decided to go with their house veggie sandwich. It was packed with all the right veggies, and stayed in tact for the entire time I spent munching, which is a very important part of sandwich consumption. Washed it down with one of the best dirty chai lattes in the area. Three stars. I want to be fair about this, because a three-star review is the hardest one to write. One star is easy -- something went wrong and you want people to know. Five stars is easy -- you're in love and you want to share. Three stars is the vast middle, the territory of the adequate, and adequacy deserves its own honest accounting. The croissant is Sysco. You know the one -- the same laminated, uniformly golden, structurally sound but spiritually hollow croissant that arrives frozen on a truck and emerges from an oven in ten thousand cafés across America. It is not bad. It is not good. It is a croissant-shaped object that fulfills the contractual obligations of being a croissant. The coffee is forgettable in the way that coffee is forgettable when nobody in the building is thinking very hard about coffee. Both are priced at a level that sets your expectations for something premium, and premium is not what arrives. The service is good, genuinely good, and this matters more than it should given the above. Someone is trying here, even if the kitchen isn't reaching. Not everybody swings for the fences. Sometimes you're in Emeryville -- a city that exists in the space between Oakland and Berkeley the way an airport exists between departures and arrivals -- and you need a place to sit and a thing to eat and the place that's right there is the place you go. Ruby's is the place that's right there. Sometimes convenience and adequacy is enough, and knowing the difference between a place that disappoints you and a place that simply is what it is might be the most important skill a regular restaurant-goer can develop. The owner here makes the place very welcoming. Always ready to greet people as they came thru. I came here for a quick lunch. They have salads half and full sizes but I forgot to say half so my plate was a full salad loaded with freshly shaved Parmesan. The chicken was nicely seasoned and the salad already had dressing mixed in. The inside of the place is small but it is meant for quick bites and lunches for local businesses so it's simple enough. Needed to kill some time and stumbled across this little cafe. So glad I did, first off, the service? Fantastic. I believe it was the owner or manager who helped me out, and they were incredibly welcoming, helpful, and kind from the moment I walked in. I ordered a chai latte and a breakfast croissant with egg whites, ham, and cheese. After I placed my order, they gave me a number, and I found a quiet little corner table to chill at. Popped in my earbuds, zoned out, and got lost in my own little world, exactly as I needed. When my food was ready, they brought it out to me (another thoughtful touch), and both the croissant sandwich and latte were full of flavor and super satisfying. The most lovely morning cafe. I am from out of town and needed to charge my car. It was the best sounding breakfast spot that I could walk to. Super cute spot!! Everything is made to order, so you can make it how you want. Arnold Palmer with homemade lemonade! Yes please!! Barely made it back to the car. The staff here are super nice and even though they were busy they handed me my order in under 10 minutes which was great since I came during my lunch! So far i've only tried their iced mocha which was good and a side of chorizo I got to add to my lunch bowl and that chorizo is great. I'm excited for come back and try more! I would say the music is a bit too loud for me to want to do work in there but plenty of people didn't seem to mind and had their laptops out. I work in the neighborhood, but hadn't eaten here for a few years. I was meeting up with a friend for lunch, and finding places to eat has been difficult as I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease (can't have gluten). The staff were incredibly nice and patient with me, and helped me figure out what I could eat. My salad was fresh, crunchy, and delicious, and when I was done, they gave me a free gluten free peanut butter cookie that was delicious! I will definitely be going back. read more

Our order - 2 croissant breakfast sandwiches (egg+bacon and egg+bacon+cheddar cheese), 2 lattes (iced vanilla and hot plain), and the lemon loaf. Everything was super fresh and delicious. The guy at the counter was likely the owner and he was so friendly and shared some details as we chatted about the ultra moist and fresh lemon loaf - better than any I've ever had. The croissants were toasted (panini style), super flakey and melted in our mouths. The eggs and bacon were just as delightful! The espresso used for the lattes is smooth and robust with flavor. The food here is great! I can't speak much for the service. Who knows what's running through people's heads to make a living, yeah? The food is great, but it's quite expensive. My job is around the area, so i go here sometimes - It's clean, inside & out. They have plentiful seating, & and it's very airy as well. I like their food options, & beverage options. They're well kept, & fairly quick when pushing out orders to the hungry, like myself of course. The gentleman who runs the register is nice, but can be sometimes a little rude - but eh, you be the judge. Who knows what's running through people's heads right? I guess I got some learning to do, in ways where I'm apparently "even if I'm NEW - I'm expected to know how to order food, as if I'm a regular." , they pack their food very nicely & it's not at all unhealthy. I will update this review because in six years the physical environment that is this part of Emeryville has changed greatly. At least as far as breakfast and midday food offerings are concerned. Now, a body has Many Choices. The Public Market resembles its former Grand Central LA Market ish kind of self only insofar as there are many vendors with many fine wares but its spiffed up instead of its kind of kitchy rag tag former self and besides the PM there are others. Ruby's was here before the market changed and here certainly before those other offerings and you know what? They are still as good as I've ever experienced. And you know what really makes them special at least to me? The proprietors take good care of their people and I haven't actually asked but simply by virtue of the fact that the same people are there and each and every one of them feels genuinely happy and so pleasant and if I'm having a bad day and stop in for one of the four things I always get not because the others are no good because I am boring, when I stop in on such less than stellar day I ALWAYS leave feeling better. Senor Guapo, you rock. Ladies of Ruby's with your ways, I cannot even describe how important you are to my day and I'm sure many many more people than just me share a similar sentiment. We owe you a debt of gratitude. So if you work in these parts or are passing through, don't fret over the parking which is indeed a drag grab a spot a block away and enjoy the stroll over because these fine people will add smiles to your day and worthy happiness to your belly. This place has become a favorite brunch spot for me! Especially... Avocado Toast Eggplant Panini Mozarella Panini Caesar Salad with Tuna Tip: Call ahead! It takes about 10-15 minutes for completion. Ask for the house-made hot sauce (for your Avocado toast). There's usually a person or two ahead of me in line in the morning when I come to pick up my meal. I absolutely love the big ol' Monstera plant in the middle of their cafe. The food is perfect and consistent. They do NOT go stingy on the avocado on their toast nor the lettuce and real parmesan cheese in their caesar salad! In my opinion, the BEST avocado toast around town. It's not just spread on but sliced and put on. It is THICCCCCKKKK. They have this hot sauce that's made in house that is THE BOMB. I will dip my toast in that. HEAVEN. I crave that sauce and want to know what they use. You do have to ask for it, it does not come with the toast. There's curbside parking on the street for fast access. read more

Pleasant experience throughout. From ordering with very compliant social distancing and hand sanitizing to ordering and overall customer service (cashier was very patient and even let us have the daily special even though it was a different day!). I definitely recommend coming here for breakfast and lunch! I got the eggplant and artichoke sandwich with pesto. And it was very good. Fresh ingredients and bread was wonderful. Ruby's is a hidden gem of a cafe. They have consistently delicious breakfast and lunch foods and the best latte in Emeryville. Whenever I pop in I feel like I'm in a friends place, the staff is super friendly and kind and I always chat a little. They also have the most delicious pecan bars you'll ever eat.
