My only car key was about to snap off and wasn't able to open the doors or ignition. I had first tried both Walmart and Home Depot but were unsuccessful. I took it to David at Cothrons's and he gave it a once over before attempting a copy. It was a strange make and he was surprised my copy had worked for so long. He came out with a new one and said "No charge. Think of it as a trial copy." I will definitely go back for more business as I will go to get another copy of that key and more. Everyone likes to save money, so I decided to buy some car key blanks online. When I received the key blanks, I started to look for a locksmith who could cut the keys. To my surprise, most locksmiths in area would not cut my key blanks, because they wanted to sell me their extremely overpriced key blanks. I called Cothron's and they said, "No problem." They were able to cut the key blanks within a few minutes and only charged $6 a key. Kudos to you, Cothron's!!! read more

Next time I will start at Cothron's and save myself the running around. I needed to get a copy of my house key and my truck's key made. I started at Walmart where they copied the house key without issue, but said they couldnt do my car key. They suggested I try Home Depot or some local spot called Cothron's. Never heard of the latter, so I headed off to the next big box emporium. I arrived at Home Depot to be told, they would also be unable to duplicate my truck key, but I should try the shop Cothron's close by. I google'd Cothron's, and was there in minutes (pretty non-descript from the street, I almost passed it!). Once I got in, I was taken care of right away and I had duplicate key in about 15 minutes with no issues! Great service, super fast, and have had no issues so far. They will be my FIRST stop the next time I have to make copies of keys or need something keyed. Took somebody close to 10 minutes to inquire about me being helped, after standing at the front counter and getting my keys prepared, I know the man saw me standing literally in front of him. I bought two transponder ignition keys for my vehicle online. Dealer wanted $35 for a key plus $120 to program. The supplier I bought from said to take blank key to locksmith to cut and program. Took it by Cothron's, staff was dismissive, said it would be $50/key to program plus $6.50/ea. to cut the keys. They said there was no guarantee they could program the key(s) and that it would still be full price if they couldn't. I had them attempt one of keys, they hooked up a laptop and some other reader device to vehicle, sure enough they were unsuccessful after about 15 minutes of trying. Charged me $60+ anyway. I found a website that provided a step by step process to manually program key, tried it out and bingo! In less than 1 minute had successfully programmed my key! read more

These guys are the BEST! I tinker with older cars and replacement parts often aren't available so when I bring something to Cothron's it's usually not an easy fix. Don patiently helped me with a car door lock that I've been attempting to repair or replace for months. When it became apparent that the parts just didn't exist Don used his ingenuity to make the parts I needed and rebuild the lock. I went into the store to have two house keys cut from the key that works perfectly and is not worn out. The keys did not work. Shame on me for not trying them prior to leaving town and giving the keys to the cat sitter. They couldn't get in and it cost me $76 to have Cothrons come out and open the door for them. (After extensive ID checks - which is great.) They ruined the bottom lock on my front door and I'm out another $60 for a new lock. Very expensive lesson. Have ACE Hardware in Georgetown cut new keys for you and test the keys. ACE has always cut them correctly. Five starts for the intense ID checks and text waivers I had to go through to get them to let the cat sitter in. Also they were there in 30 minutes. One star for the fact that they are the ones that cut the keys and CAUSED this issue. read more

Called about getting a 2nd key for a F150. The key needs to be programmed and cut. Over the phone, I'm told it would cost $55 per key to cut and another $65 to program. I go to the store and then they tell me they don't sell the fobs, I need to bring my own. I order two fobs from Amazon for $40 each, take them to South Cothron's and I'm told my program doesn't work for 2105 F150's. WTF? The bestselling vehicle in the US and you guys can't make a key for it? Can't training your own staff to communicate the services you offer? Every time I called I was misinformed. There's so many good things that I can say about this company. They were there for me in a time in my life when I couldn't find anyone to make a key for my vehicle. The people there are very kinf, polite and professional. You can truly tell that they have a heart for people. My car broke down last week Tuesday. Got it fixed the next day. That next day my son breaks my key on accident I only had so much in the bank and they were willing to givthe extra mile to help me when I didn't have. My house was built in the 1930's on a pier and beam foundation so is constantly shifting in its Old West Austin location. As a result I have to get my door locks periodically adjusted, and Ray at Cothron's has done the work the last three or four times. He's on time, does the work well and fast. Great Locksmith! I needed to have several specialty locks rekeyed to match the locks/keys of my other door locks, plus I needed to get a door unlocked (I did not have the key for the knob). Locksmith Max met me at my home. I told him what I wanted done. He got the locked door opened and then he took a look at my specialty locks. He let me know that the speciality locks could be rekeyed but would need to be removed and taken to their shop as the locks required special parts. And, that he could do that on a return service call when more time was allocated. No problem - I was happy to be told that upfront! So, the following week I contacted Cothron's to get Max out to complete the remaining work. Max returned and he was very thorough, conscientious and tidy. Jeff, a mobile locksmith with Cothron's Safe and Lock, arrived well within the time frame given by Cothron's dispatch beforehand. I was his last call of the day. He stayed late helping me decide on and install the most secure system for handling all the traffic in and out of our house. He even helped me avoid a second service call by letting me go to Lowe's to procure the necessary equipment (twice because I got the wrong thing the first time). He trained me in how to use the new keypad properly (code and also backup key which is meant to be manipulated differently from a conventional key). I was referred to Cothron's to cut my car key by the local hardware store that only does house keys. They quickly copied my 2005 Toyota key to the blank key that I bought online at Amazon for my model of car. The key was about five bucks and had about fifty positive reviews of people who seemed to use them with success. I transferred the button electronics piece and transponder chip to the new key. Cothron's are real locksmiths. I initially called another "locksmith" with apparent five star reviews on yelp. They delivered a kid to basically break into my house with a screwdriver and crowbar and some weird pneumatic paddles. After 15 minutes of this kid prying and scratching on the jamb, I called Cothron's again and discovered they have an after hours locksmith on call. Cothron's arrived within the hour and it took them 30 seconds to open my door. btw, if the first thing your "locksmith" does upon arriving at your house is check for unlocked windows, he's not a real locksmith. I now know there are definitely locksmith scammers gaming yelp to generate business in Austin. If I ever find myself locked out again, I'll call Cothron's first. read more

I bought a new key from them a year ago for my Lexus which cost a little over $100. It broke in my ignition on the coldest days of Austin, and I had to walk home and get tools to pull it out myself. When I went to the store with my receipt, all they offered was to make me a new key for $100. I asked them if they just expect me to come in once a year and get a new key, and pay $100 each time? And they answered that is all they can offer. I walked out. If they aren't going to guarantee a $100 key for more than a year, there is no reason to purchase from them. read more

I've lived in Austin since 1972 and this should have been my locksmith for a long time. I got copies of my RV keys, they programed my keyless remote I bought online (it failed the included instructions) .... and made copies of my truck key. ALL this cost less than one truck key I got made at the dealership. Instead of dissing the dealership price, they explained that it was probably worth it to have one "Factory direct" key that I keep as a low wear "master" for the truck. Great attitude!!! read more

These guys know what they are doing! They took care of a need in 5 minutes that I have been (stubbornly and naively) trying to get resolved for several years using the key duplication service offered by the bigbox retailers. I have gotten duplicate keys made numerous times and I'd have a success rate of 0 to 10% (I'd get a bunch of those made hoping it'd work). I had five keys made by Cothron's - every single one works!! I guess it's like getting your heart checkup done at a drugstore Vs. going to a cardiologist except that their bill won't give you a heart attack (probably costs just as much as the bigbox retailers). p.s. I called to get a quote on a digital lock for our business. They sent a guy out to measure (which took about 5 minutes) and he charged me $50 for that. I was never told I would be charged for the measuring. After a week and a half I finally received the quote. The parts were marked up THREE TIMES what they are sold for online. In addition to that, they wanted to charge $100 an hour for labor (3 hours) AND an additional $90 service fee. Stay away from them. They are not truthful and will try to rip you off. read more
