What incredibly poor service. We needed help with the lock on our front door, which completely broke and did not work at all. Cothron's came out, charged us $100, and said they would send us a quote for a new lockset. That was on October 2 - 14 days ago. We have called numerous times - no quote. This is our front door - we need it fixed. We were told someone would call us back, then someone was out sick, etc. No one ever called, no one ever provided a quote, after charging us $100 to come out to look at the lock. And that's just a quote - we still need the actual service performed. We have called numerous times. Unbelievably horrible service. We are contesting the $100 charge on our credit card. We are practically begging for a quote to spend money with them but they could not care less. Cothron's used to provide excellent service but clearly not anymore. Sad. read more

I went to get a set of replacement keys for camper top. Even though they had the correct key number, they made the wrong set of keys. They were not even close. They charged me $35. I later found someone on eBay who was selling the keys for only $13. You would think that they would be more competent. read more

Finally found this brick and mortar locksmith with thousands of blanks to make any key from hanging on a massive wall. Most other locksmiths are only mobile operations with keys for cars and front doors. I required duplicates of a special key which were made in just several mintutes and which could not be made at Lowe's, Home Depot, or Ace. read more

I've been using Cothron's for as long as I've lived in Austin. I've never had a problem and they really know their stuff. Recently they replaced a door latch and it stopped working properly 2 days before the 90 warranty expired. They sent a very helpful gentleman to repair it. He felt that a different door latch would probably work better. Although he had to go back to his shop to get a part, he did so. I called ahead about getting an alarm fob for my older vehicle, giving the make and model to the person answering the phone. I was assured that they had it in stock, and could program it within about 30 minutes. Upon driving in the rain, I walked in to an overwhelming smell of tobacco smoke. The person at the counter took the fob behind the counter to check the computer. After checking with an older man, he came back and said "we don't have it." ! I explained that I had called, etc. He had no good explanation, but said that they don't keep older items in stock. When I asked him to check the other location, he went back and the old codger said, loudly "What now!?" Of course, the other store didn't have it either. Before I left, I suggested that they not allow smoking in the store, because the place smelled like an ashtray. After leaving, I called back, and asked about ordering the part, and was told "certainly, it can be here in a couple of days." If I had been told this while I was there, I might not have been ask upset with them, and would probably have ordered it from them. Oddly enough, the price I was quoted over the phone previously was completely different than the one I received on the subsequent call. I have had very good service from Cothron in the past, and will go back for other lock/key matters, but todays experience was less than satisfying. read more

Absolutely loved the service I received from Don! I went in looking for a safe for our house and they did not have the one I wanted in the store, so Don called his other vendors and was able to locate the safe I wanted and because it was in stock, I received a discount and did not have to pay for shipping. After two trips to the store, a purchase and then a dead battery...thanks a ton for the jump, I left very happy. My good luck continued and I was able to get my safe delivered the next day. Not the most professional and their customer service is lacking. I locked my keys in my car and called them about 3pm. I was told a time range of 30 min to 2 hours for a technician to respond which I think is ridiculous. You should be able to provide a more accurate estimate. Then, they called me an hour later and said a technician was on his way. 30 min later he still wasn't there so I ended up having to call 2 more times and he finally showed almost 2 hours after the initial call. The technician was visibly stressed when he arrived and mentioned "needing a cigarette". I will use a different service next time as in those high stress situations you need a very professional, responsive and friendly company. read more

I recently bent my car key making it completely unusable. My sister drove me to 2 different dealerships trying to get a replacement key made. I was told that nobody had that key in stock and that it would take several days to order one. The service person then recommended I try Cothron's since it's an older car and didn't have a chip in the key. At this point, I was willing to try anything. To my utter amazement, the guy at Cothron's was able to straighten my old key and cut me a new one in under 5 minutes. These guys are amazing and I will take all my key making business to them! Terrible dispatch service. Was given an appointment today for a home rekey around 10am and was informed technician would be here before 5pm. At 4 I called the the dispatch team for an update and was informed there was not such record of my appointment. Very horrible service from the dispatcher who offered me an appointment for Saturday at a slightly higher service call fee ($5.00). As I was forced to stay home for six hours waiting on NOONE I asked that she waive the $5. In the spirit of customer service she missed the concept and said No. What a shame - we've used them on several other properties. Never again! read more

Sometimes I do dumb things, including but not limited to: losing my house key...inside my less than 500 square foot house. After spending a week looking for said key (and leaving my front door unlocked every time I left the house) I decided it was time to get a replacement. But how? Rather than paying for somebody to come out, I unscrewed the deadbolt thing-y from the door and took the whole contraption in to Colther's. I thought they might say "wtf you moron we can't make a key from this." But guess what! They can! It took them less than 20 minutes, and cost me only $19 for 2 keys. After trying both Home Depot and Lowe's to have my new mail key reproduced - I found that I just had a "weird" key. It was suggested that I go to Cothron's and I found one extremely close to my neighborhood (aka, I pass by it nearly every day and have never realized it). Parking is a little weird/tight. I think there's only like 3 spaces and not a lot of room to back out. The reason why I say, "I think," is because the spaces weren't really clearly marked. But whatever, I'm not there to park. I walk in and travel back in time to the 1970s. This place looks relatively untouched. There is a slew of safes and door/home security items (deadbolts, latches, you name it). At the register ahead of you, a wall of keys stares you down. Every shape, every size, everything. I hand over my weird key to the man at the register, tell him I need two copies - and before I get out my wallet, the two keys have appeared. Sweet! It was $5.20 for my two copies of my weird key - which was more expensive than the house keys I had made at Home Depot... but it took half the time (at Home Depot you have to wait for someone to come and work the machine, at Cothron's they're right there and ready to go). So if you need a quick key copy, head down to Cothron's. They'll probably be able to replicate any key you need. read more

One of the worst companies I've ever considered hiring ever. Use Advanced Lock Solutions instead. Cheaper, faster, higher quality customer service. Ask for Mike (www.advanced-lock.com) We had been recommended to use Cothron's to update all of our locks on our new house. I contacted them, spoke to a wonderful service lady, who arranged for a specialized locksmith to come out within a reasonable time frame. Had to pay a $50 credit for the service call that would then be applied to my order. This was the best part of my experience. Locksmith came out, he was great onsite, said he would have some suggestions and a quote by the end of two business days. Didn't hear from him. I called him 1 week later to ask about the quote, was informed that there were some issues with the supplier, some questions about the locks and inserts he was going to recommend, and he was waiting for schematic measurements before he could complete the quote. Said he would call me back the next day. Not having heard from them, I call back ANOTHER WEEK LATER. Same response, however, was then given a quote the following day. I had asked for two different quotes, only received one. Asked for the second quote, was told it would be there next day. You guessed it - NADA. So, I emailed the website, explained my situation, told them I was going to use a different company, and wanted them to know my experience because somewhere in the company there was an issue. Received a call from the GM the next morning, wanting to help, to fix. Told me he had my locksmith, the dispatch, and himself in a meeting that morning to discuss my order. Wanted to know if I was comfortable still working with the same locksmith, or he would switch him off the job. I said I was fine, I just wanted my quotes... Later that day, got both quotes, apologies. I emailed back immediate questions regarding the quotes. And then I waited. One day. Two days. Three days. Emailed again. Dispatch said they would be coming. Nothing. So....I called their competitor - Advanced Lock Solutions - Mike placed my order that day, three days later the locks had arrived, were installed, and were $600 CHEAPER than Cothron's. I emailed Cothron's, told them to cancel all quotes, to refund my $50, and never heard a thing from them since. I wasted 2 months waiting on quotes and locks, never heard anything back from them, and never really got the quotes I paid them $50 for. Ridonkulous. RIDONKULOUS! read more

If you are looking to move a safe in Austin, Texas ... literally, there is no other choice. Originally, we used them to move our safe from downtown to our new house in Lakeway and they were incredible! They gave us a very reasonable estimate, showed up on time and treated the safe like it was their own. Just today, they came back to install another safe. I ordered it directly from the factory and the shipping company left it at the curb. A 805 pound safe just sitting at the curb. I realized this only yesterday when I got a call from the moving company and called them in a panic. They worked us into their already booked schedule and again provided excellent service.
