If i had an exyternal hardrive, i think i would have probably fixed my netbook. i took my netbook to this guy at cosmic cmputer and he just made it sooooo slow. i cant type this message because my netbook is acting like a turtle. not only did he ruined it but i asked him not to install norton and he did. he even offered himself to install avg but since this guy does the work so fast, he doesn't do it carefully and complete. this man will charge you to format your computer and actually make it run smoothly but in fact, he ruined it. he is dishonest and he will steal your money and do a crappy job with your computer. he installed so many useless programs that have ruined the performance of my computer. i will never take it back again. i have to wait until i return to argentina , to have my netbook fixed by my husband - for free. and he does an amazing job. never again will i recommend anyone to come to this place. Bottom line first: this is the best computer store in the city. You need a PC, go there, don't even look anywhere else. I bought many computers in various places over 20 years and this is the best store I've ever been to, period. Read on for the details on why it's awesome. So I checked a few stores to get my new computer. Got various degrees of friendliness and quotes. Then I got to Cosmic Computer and David (never got his name really, but from other reviews I guess it was David) was very nice, took a look at the quotes I brought with me and not only matched them but got a better deal for better hardware and also explained to me without being overly technical why the other stores were trying to upsell me on stuff I didn't need so I could make an educated purchase! I had to wait a couple of months before making the purchase but when I came back, he upgraded the monitor and processor for the same price! Then the day I was supposed to pick up the PC he told me he ran some tests and found some little issue so he'd rather order a new part and it would take another day before I got the PC. I didn't mind because honestly, this is an issue that wouldn't have developed into a major problem before a couple of years and he could have just sold me the thing as is without mentioning anything, I would have never known it was faulty from the start. All 3 times I went to the store, I saw how he always take time to answer the phone and help people who walk in, even if they have problems or questions that would have ME rolling my eyes! So one night my PC for some reason got a horrible spyware/virus. Next day i brought it into Cosmic Computer, David was very nice right off the bat, he spent the time to look at what was wrong with the computer together right there on the spot. Unlike other computer shops i've been to where they just ask me to write down what is wrong and drop it off. So after about an hour of investigation David recommended me to leave it overnight for him to check out. I was hesitant at first, but i might as well give it a shot. The next day i called and he let me know everything was fixed so i dropped by and he hooked my computer again to make sure everything was good to go, and when i asked for the price which i was dreading. He told me, just 1 hour flat rate 65$ Which was just great because i was hurting for money. I was expecting at least 2 hours because the day before he pretty much worked on it for an hour. I was given the task to take a ton of photos at a work event. Our usual photographer was out on vacation, so obviously I was pretty excited to take on another role and do some photography. I stayed later for 3 days, got some great shots and was very pleased with the results. Won't go into how this happened, BUT... all the photos off my SD card. GONE. Vanished. 0 photos. After the mini heart attack, I found Cosim Computer on yelp. Desperate and exasperated, I trekked there ASAP on Saturday morning, right after the erasing disaster. David said he can't make any promises but he will try his best, since SD card recovery isn't as easy as computer files recovery. A day later, David calls me and had almost all the photos recovered. He gave me a good deal, and was great at respecting the privacy of the work-sensitive photos (he refused to hand over the card to my GF even, when I wasn't able to make it. His turn around time on service/repair is fast and cost is very reasonable. He had serviced 4 of my laptops in the past and I have never been disappointed. Story? Here is one... I recently took my laptop in for a CPU install upgrade. I had gaming laptop with 4 freaking fans inside. Dave took the time to clean all the 4 fans and heat sinks before installing the new CPU. Here is the fun part... It turned out the new CPU was defective and my laptop won't boot. Jack! Instead of charging me for the install, Dave put the old CPU back inside my laptop and didn't charge me a DIME since I was regular customer. You kidding me? Free! Wow! That's old school service. ok, so the young asian guys here are very nice they only charged me $45 and definitely spent way more than an hour fussing with my media pc (which turned out to be a money and time pit, I just wanted to save the data, itunes library, etc) The location is sort of a pain to get to if you live downtown, and its more or less landlocked suburbs with stop signs There is public trans, but i didnt go that route there, esp with a 20lb computer under my arm My computer still doesnt work (not their fault, specialty switch now bad), but I had put $100 and 3 hrs time into it and I still am where I started, just gonna pull the drive and jack into another adpater Only downside is they tightened the torx screws on the back of the box real tight, cant get em off w/ a flat screwdriver finesse, so off to another trip to buy a torx bit set, argghhh read more

I think if you need to find a business, besides obvious criteria like proximity, convenience, price, and word-of-mouth reputation, one good way is to screen for shops that are going take your hard-earned cash is to call them on the phone. I called Cosmic Computer and spoke to a male identifying himself as a technician. For all his bluster he sorely lacked very basic general technical knowledge which left me questioning the abilities of this shop. He topped this off with very poor customer interface skills. People here posted that they are impressed at Cosmic Computer's ability to fix laptops with broken screens. This is something I've never done but I've fixed a huge variety of electronic things, including computers, and am handy with soldering irons, so, I think a laptop display repair is not that daunting. My rating is a temporary 1-star until I can assess CC without actually leaving them in charge of any of my hardware. I just would not trust them. Many of my friends fix their own computers so I can't use anecdotal data. A Yelp reviewer said it took CC two days to find his virus but that could just be the time when they got around to it. And maybe that's a weak point for them. Maybe I should give them a rootkitted laptop laden with fake sensitive, financial, private data or one with an intermittent cold solder joint on a chip connection and see how they fare. Mean, huh? If I need parts and limited my search to SF there's at least one other computer shop (Toptek) in the Sunset, one in the Richmond, and one downtown. This last one is the cheapest and has decent monthly sales on select items. But I would never, ever, ever, let shops like these repair any of my machines. Even at work, I support myself when it comes to this. And Lord love the IT departments at high-tech companies, but I usually don't need them where I've worked. A vast assortment of electronic devices are available cheaply at South Bay places like MicroCenter or Microtimes, Fry's, for new products, .... and for used stuff, Weird Stuff, Halted (HSC), ... and many more near Lawrence & Central. Though you may not find the latest graphics card at these, the Valley has lots of engineers and DIY'ers so if you ever need network, impedance, or spectrum analyzers, TDRs, SMA connectors, etc.... I visited the Apple store about my laptop not starting because of a spilled beverage on the keyboard. They were going to charge me $750 dollars without even checking the damage inside with me. Not satisfied with the help, I checked out Cosmic Computer. David told me to come in to see what was wrong. He opened up my laptop and showed me the minimal repair needed to get my computer working. After the repair, he started screwing back the bottom of my laptop case, but one of the screws were misplaced. He asked me if he could spend a few more minutes finding the right screw. For anyone that's taken apart something with screws and tried to put it back together, not many people including myself would care about mismatching the screws. But that just shows you how careful and detailed David is in getting the job done right. With his customer service and fair pricing, I was able to save hundreds and feel good about the returned condition of my laptop. In a panic today with a seemingly toasted hard drive, I called several computer repair shops in the Sunset and Richmond to see about getting emergency help. After talking to a store in the Inner Richmond, I then got a call back from David of Cosmic Computers. I am really glad I was home to take that second phone call. Hands down, Cosmic Computers delivered the best customer service I have seen in a while. In addition to calling me back promptly, David was friendly, he asked good questions, he was objective and most importantly he communicated well. I took my sick computer into the shop, and David ran a free 15 minute diagnostic on the machine. After determining that my hard drive was dying a slow death, he explained specifically what the problem was. We talked about a few options, and I eventually decided to buy a new 320GB drive for a reasonable price. After I got home, I realized I no longer had my windows software, and so I called David back. He returned my call within minutes and arranged to reinstall my OS also in the same day. Really....can anyone deliver that kind of service in this day and age? Apparently they can at Cosmic Computer. David was working here on his own today and seem pretty dam proficient For someone who was working on his own, he definitely did not come off money hungry. Brought in a damaged HP DM1 and told him i was considering shipping it off to HP to fix. He told me that would be a waste of time and took it behind the counter to fix. Came in at 11:00, got out on the 30,..HP would have charged me to ship and eventually replace it cause they wont fix but, but he did it for fairly cheap... might as well been free.. The motherboard was out of place, the case came unscrewed, the mouse clickers weren't working but HP would have definitely screwed you.... I'm bringing my other computers here next time....Forget HP Warranty, its a waste of money. HP's are good for collecting dust though if nothing else... read more

Fast! Cheap! Friendly! Fixed!!!!!!!! I'm so happy!!!!!! I found these guys on Yelp after going to Best Buy Geek Squad to try and fix my beloved laptop. There was an obvious problem with the display - it would boot (I could hear it), but I couldn't see anything. Geek Squad told me I'd have to pay a non-refundable $39.95 deposit (sorry, but if it's non-refundable, it's not a deposit!!!), and then they would ship my laptop to the manufacturer, where they estimated it would take 4-6 weeks to fix and cost around $300. Yikes. I had only paid $500 for the laptop, and as much as I love it, I couldn't justify that. I asked the Geek Squad guy if I could just send it to the manufacturer myself (thus saving the "deposit), and he said yes. I went home dejected, but then after checking the manufacturer's website, where I found no information whatsoever about sending my machine for repair, I found Cosmic Computer on Yelp. As soon as I arrived in the store, I knew I was in the best place possible to fix my laptop. You'll know what I mean when you go there. It's a mess, but in a good, comforting kind of way. These guys took my laptop, plugged it into another monitor, determined that my screen needed to be replaced, and placed the order for a new one, and in about 5 minutes I was out of there. When the part arrived about a week later, they installed it the same day and my laptop is as good as new!!! It cost me less than half what Geek Squad estimated. David is THE MAN!!! I initially came to see him because I read that he did FREE fixing of DELL laptop monitors that had what I later learned were common hinge problems. FREE, what? Sure enough, brought in my laptop and he starts whipping out tools right away, unscrews and fixes my hinges, hands it back, no charge. I force a tip on him. Since then he is my go-to man for any computer issues. I trusted him to upgrade my disk drive with more room (too many photos & videos!) and it came out perfectly. He has worked on other monitor problems of mine, and recently when my DELL finally died, he put all my data from that hard drive into my other laptop (his idea, which ended up saving me money upgrading the new laptop with more memory). He is always very patient with my questions and helps you to understand what is going on. And he goes out of his way not to charge you for stuff you don't need. Bringing your computer to David is like dropping it off with your smart, cool friend, who just wants to help you and make sure you don't get ripped off. Imagine, a business that acts like a human being! And being human, expect some quirks, like he has always taken my phone number but I always end up having to call him for updates about when it will be ready, which he gives honest answers to. David is a genius! I had problems with my Mac. But I didn't want to go all the way to an Apple Store for a diagnostic test. David heard the symptom of the issue and immediately knew how to fix it. He had to order a replacement part. So waiting for the mail took some time. But he advised me on the likely cost to source it, and said I didn't need to pay anything up-front until he succeeded in the repair! In the end he was able to find the part for cheaper than he expected. The whole repair cost me much less than I anticipated. Because my Mac far outlasted its warranty, I think going through Cosmic Computer saved me much more than going into the Apple Store. read more

I'm probably one of the least computer/tech savvy people you will ever meet. I freak out when cryptic messages pop up on my screen or when the rainbow wheel of death doesn't go away. My Dell Laptop was slowing down, acting up and eventually took a dump. I thought it may have been a virus because of the way it was acting and how slow it was processing information. Before I gave up and fulfilled my dreams of putting it on the curb and smashing it mob style, I called up Cosmic Co. Turned out to be the hard drive. David and co. were able to extract the files that I had in my computer, cleaned up the drive as much as possible and didn't charge me an arm and a leg! My computer spontaneously went to the Blue Screen of Death 2 days before I was leaving town. Cosmic went above & beyond the call of duty and re-installed windows, loaded all my device drivers, fixed my trackpad, and even stayed open late so I could pick up the machine. Basically the best place ever. I had known for a long time that my 5 year old HP laptop was on it's last leg, but my fool self refused to get an external hard drive to back that shit up. Not only did my computer include all of my graduation pics from high school and college, it also had tons of old projects/documents of sentimental/scholastic value. The computer has always been prone to over heating and already had a hard drive failure earlier in its life so it was no surprise to me that it just refused to boot up one day. I called them about 30 min before closing time expecting them to turn me away but instead they were so gracious and told me it was more than enough time for them to take a look! Within those 30 min we were able to figure out that it was indeed a hard drive failure instead of something to do with the computer itself and that they would need to try some more complicated measures to get the data out. They tried at least 3 different things that day and were completely transparent with me with what they were doing. I never thought that they were trying to get me to go with some expensive procedure for something that could be easily fixed. They wouldn't let me pay for any work they did this day. They let me know up front that they would charge me per hour at a certain rate to extract the data but also told me that they would not charge me anything if it didn't work. I came back the next day and lo and behold they were able to get all of the data out! Truly miraculous! It ended up being something like $130 which I later found out to be very inexpensive when the same thing happened to my roommate and he asked around for quotes. My day was totally saved at a great price and I also got some excellent advice on what to pick for my next computer! All around nice guys and a very trustworthy environment. Although I hope to never need to visit ever again, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. hooray for cosmic computer! read more

COSMIC IS THE BEST, they are the most efficient friendly, competent and honest vendors I have ever come across. Free Good and Proven Advice: If you have any computer issues it is worth your time to at least check Cosmic Computers out . My computer died! All kinds of crazy pop ups and nonsense started popping up, obviously I had a virus. I researched a few computer stores on Yelp and found Cosmic Computers. The ads were very positive and so i called Cosmic, described my problem and they were confident they could fix my computer. They did of course and charged $65 for 1 hour labor. But this included: 1. wiping my computer 2. reinstalling everything 3. saving all the files (music, pictures, programs and files) I asked for 4. installing a new keyboard 5. installing a new DVD-RW drive 6. initial evaluation and diagnosis When I first went in they looked at my computer right away, diagnosed the problem and let me know how they would fix it, not even asking for a dime. I had other problems too, like a bad keyboard ( spilled coffee), a nonfunctioning DVD-RW drive, my friend needed a faster wireless card for an older laptop. They also analyzed these problems and solved them, all before I paid a dime. The parts needed for a new disk drive, keyboard and new model USB wireless card came to about $100. When I asked how much it would be to install just the keyboard which cost $30, the guy laughed and said $30. . ALL COST ME $65 for 1 hour labor and the cost he had to pay for parts I specifically requested and knew were faulty AND I got my laptop back running way better than when I first bought it. read more

Yes, I know I just happened to purchase the worse HP model in the history of models but that was wayy before anyone knew! Now, I come from a gifted, computer-skillzz inclined family where I am the failure of the lot. It is an embarrassment to them that I contracted a VIRUS!! I came here, shamefully, and explained my problem. They were very helpful and even helped me quarantine my files and charged me one, very reasonable, flat rate. Computer break downs scare me because I am absolutely helpless in trouble shooting the problem. I discovered Cosmic Computer a few years ago when my PC became virus possessed and took on a life of it's own. David at Cosmic Computer saved the day as well as my computer. My concern after all the time he spent on it was that it was going to end up costing more in repairs than the damn thing was worth. Not true....to my amazement, it was only $65. My computer crashed and wouldn't boot - normally I'd fix it myself but really didn't have the time to go through all the steps to figure out what was wrong. I dropped it off late on a Monday afternoon and the next day they diagnosed the problem as a faulty video card. What is there bad to say about this place? Let me think. There is none! The guys inside really care about your computer! David? explained what was wrong with my old desktop that wouldn't turn on. Turns out it was a power supply problem. A few hours and $85 later, the computer worked like it was brand new. He was genuine, kind and helpful. He doesn't try to sell you things you don't need. After the job, he ran a diagnostic on my comp. and said everything was fine and even grounded a few shorts that he found.
