Turns out it was a power supply problem. A few hours and $85 later, the computer worked like it was brand new. He was genuine, kind and helpful. He doesn't try to sell you things you don't need. Once upon a time I was multitasking with my laptop on the dining room table, trying to cook dinner and fold laundry and watch the news and put things away and pack for the business trip to Europe and as I'm darting here and there and through the dining room with a freshly folded pile of clothes, the cord to my laptop charger snakes itself around my ankle as I'm full speed ahead towards the bedroom and WHOOPS! YANK! OH NO! Say it isn't so! The damage didn't seem that big of a deal, until my battery refused to charge. A new jack would need to be installed (on the motherboard, gasp!). Not to mention the slightly bent prong on my AC adapter. They were honest, so I was honest and told them I had to be on a plane to London in 2 days and the laptop must go with me whether its broken or not. I spilled water on my Apple keyboard and the whole thing shut down :( I turned it upside down immediately but was kind of freaking out over my files, was able to take it to this shop the same-day about two hours later, and David was able to save it! The cost was very fair, considering he only had to replace one part and strategically dry out the remaining hardware. I didn't loose any pictures or data, and am typing on it now over a year later! Unfortunately, my Alienware laptop screen went bad. I don't have a light touch, so I know I can't do this delicate work myself. So I decided I would bring it to this shop as I had a great previous experience. Went in, got a quote, agreed, and bam. I was on my way. Now, I know a screen replacement isn't a walk in the park....especially on an Alienware...so I wasn't expecting this to be done in a couple days. Anyway, I leave my computer there and he says he has to order parts or whatever, so check back in a week. I call David back a week later and ask for any updates, and they say they need to order something...I think it was like a new cover for the screen or something. I'm not quite sure what it was, but it was like 40 bucks, so it wasn't that big of a deal. I just wanted my laptop fixed...Only problem was that they had to order it from china. lol. I have ordered parts for this laptop before (needed a new 6990m because the old one failed, and I had to order it from like Oceania or something lol), and it seems like the parts needed to fix this laptop are only sourced from countries outside the US. I hate Dell...I mean, Alienware. Anyway, they order the part, get it fixed a week or so later, and my Alienware laptop is functional again! Turnaround time was ok, but the biggest wait was just waiting from the parts to come in from china. Luckily they built my PC so I wasn't in dire need of the laptop lol. Another happy customer! Client of mine asked me to troubleshoot their computer which wouldn't boot. Me claiming the hard drive to be the culprit, I brought it by Cosmic Computer to make sure. David immediately helped me out, popped the drive in for two minutes and told me that it's definitely a kaput harddrive. Without trying to make a sale out of me, David helped me out, diagnosed my problem and told me about how the prices of hard drives are going up and let me off on my way. Cosmic Computer definitely is an easy going and honest company to deal with that's not going to haggle you with low quality service such as geek squad. How did this place come in #2 in SF!?!? I'm losing faith in Yelp's credibility, impartiality and authenticity of posted reviews. Cosmic Computer is not a business. It is one, nice-enough guy tinkering with computers in a storefront (could just as well be his garage or bedroom) 'decorated' with stacks of empty PC component boxes. I took my expensive gaming desktop in with a boot error. He stuck a post it note on it with my phone number and placed it on the floor with several other desktops. He took no other information from me, gave me any paperwork or gave me an estimate of cost or time. I decided based on Yelp reviews to give him some slack. I had to continually pester him for updates and a diagnosis. During one of several in-person visits asking for an update, he pulled the cover off (the PC had not been moved from where it was put day 1) and decided on-the-spot that it required a new motherboard. With a verbal estimate of between $500-$700, he would need to research purchase options and 'get back to me'. After THREE MONTHS of unreturned calls, numerous in-person visits, and no work being done I retrieved the PC, offered to pay him for his time. He was very annoyed that I was taking it. I dropped the PC off at SF Comp. Repair where, within 24 hours, it was diagnosed and I was given several repair options. The problem was NOT the motherboard and cost less than $100 to repair. read more

I cannot recommend Cosmic Computer and David highly enough. After giving my boyfriend a thorough thrashing for cracking our brand new laptop's screen, we went to Best Buy to get their advice. The Geek Squad told us that it would cost us at least $300, if not more, to get the screen fixed. Worse yet -- he said it would never be same. Not wiling to take the Geek Squad's word as gospel, we called around to places we found through Yelp. David was by far the most helpful and personable person we spoke with. Even better - he said we could probably repair the computer for less than $300. I dropped off the computer for repair on 12/22 and it was ready by the 26th. There is no one else in the Bay Area, let alone San Francisco that I would recommend if you have any sort of technological issues relating to computers, hard drives, laptops, netbooks, software or hardware issues. David, the owner, is a very friendly, humorous guy and is straightforward and honest when it comes to diagnostics. I value his services highly. I've had three computer problems and he fixed each individually for all at the same flat rate. A BSOD issue with a desktop was fixed within days even though he had lots on his plate. A clogged up notebook was cleaned and back in good running condition. He even suggested installing Ubuntu on my netbook which I look back at as a good decision. He does great work at a good pace and won't yank your chain. I will always recommend friends and family to this place. Also, Liza's review is inaccurate and his response is correct. I was out of town on business and spilled a full glass of water on my laptop keyboard. First and foremost if this happens to you please turn your computer off. I was in such a state of shock that I kept trying to turn it on and that I burned out the keyboard. Secondly if this does happen run don't walk to Cosmic computers. I took my computer to David and he gave me no false hope but said to come back in a week. I was completely lost and forlorn without my computer but had to make due with the kindness of friends and family. It seems to take forever to fix my 10 year old desktop pc due to being fried by an unexpected power surge right before Thanksgiving. Should i give up the computer and toss it aside? It hold memories and files of my first ever images of 10 years of life and travels. I used yelp to find cosmic, open late and open on weekends to accommodate my time. I know nothing about computer. All i know is when i turn it on, it was ticking loudly that it was going to blow up. I left my computer at cosmic for at least 3 weeks. Since i didn't hear from them, i called and then was told it would be ready by the end of the week. The place is overfilled with so many computers. I took it home and it didn't work. I took it back and was convinced it was fixed. Can't argue with someone who is an expert. We argued back and forth but i had to be convinced. I spent a day slowly agonizingly painfully plugged back every plug to the internet, to the printer, to the speaker, to the tv converter, and was amazed it worked! Hallelujah praise the lord jumping joy. My next project was to convince pge to reimburse the repair bill. Another month or two later. To the end, cosmic was great. It fixed my computer and i was able to back up all my files. they accommodated my obstinence and ignorance that the computer was still broken. To that i was most grateful. My friend went here to have her laptop worked on and was really happy with what David (owner) did. So when I had to have some work done on a computer, I thought of this place. My Dad had a problem with his computer, an old setup, that just would not power on fully. It was his work computer which he had sit idle for half a year in storage. We dropped off the computer, and about 10 minutes later, David calls us back, identifying the problem. There was corrosion on the motherboard. David gave us two scenarios of what he will be doing, either A) clean up the corrosion, and charge an hour and a half of labor, or B) the cleaning does not work (no charge) and to find a new mother board (the one my Dad had in his computer was an older type/hard to find). Thankfully after cleaning the corrosion, it worked! My Dad was so grateful. David and his shop gets an A+. He knows what he is doing, very professional, and is also friendly and very easy to talk to. He explained everything he was going to do. My Dad was really stoked when the problem with his computer was resolved, and at a good price! We originally called IT for the company that made his computer (Polywell), and was quoted $100/hour to work on it. Polywell's IT also recommended to just buy a new computer since my Dad's setup was old, and is probably cheaper to do that rather then to have work done on it. For what my Dad was doing (autoCad, MS office), the setup he had worked just fine. David recommended to my Dad that if it works fine for what you do, then why upgrade? I liked how he made that comment, because my Dad was really set on buying a new computer also. He changed my Dad's mind after that comment (and saved him some money too!). (My Dad also enjoyed his conversation with David about Alfa Romeos. I wasn't there, but he just mentioned how happy he was with the work, service, price and how David also likes Alfa Romeos). (Thank you Delta Airlines and yes, I know I am not supposed to check a computer) Anyway the computer work but I would bum out and think about where my life did not go properly. For this I'm glad I found cosmic on yelp. sometimes the internet is actually helpful! David seemed to determine my (relatively low) level of computer literacy quickly and talked to me at that level pretty effectively. He didn't talk down to me or talk over my head. Despite having what I thought was virus & malware protection, clearly what I had on my computer wasn't enough to protect me from a spear-phishing attack that infected my PC with ransomware. David saved my computer, got it all cleaned out and ready for re-installation of Windows and my files which I had backed up on a cloud service. He was also a very calming presence at a time when I was freaking out over the invasion. He also installed a free version of Avast, which already found some bad stuff in some of my files even though I selected a restoration date that was well before the hack occurred. I signed up for yelp just to give a review for cosmic computer. I have to say that David is awesome to work with. I had a hard drive fail on me, horrible experience as I do design work and hadn't backed up my drive for whatever reason. David was able to install a new hard drive, restore the data I was missing, and reinstall my OS for me over the weekend. It took 12 hours for the data recover on 100+ gigs of files. David only charged me for one hour of work. How's that about service? On top of that, a new hard drive and installation was so cheap compared to all the businesses I called around. We're talking at least half the cost of other places around Richmond and USF areas. David really is the best and he didn't act like a snob when talking to me. That's very hard to find when it comes to stuff as technical as computer repair. Definitely will be coming back to Cosmo for any of my needs. read more

First off, I rarely use yelp because I think most yelpers are, well let's face it, a bunch of complete Fu#%!ng idiots. But after the incredible service I received from David, I was strongly compelled to leave him a glowing review. This guy was amazing! Brought my Macbook pro in because the screen was not turning on. He said might have to buy a new screen at an estimated price of $400-$500 dollars. He then decided to open it up and tinkered around with it for maybe 25-30 minutes. Saw that the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard was twisted and loose. Fixed the problem on the spot. I then asked him how much I owe him, he said "no charge". I told him I've got give him something, but he insisted "no charge". I then attempted to leave him a tip, which he turned down. Very good price, and honest, no bullshit service. He saved my super pricey graphics card, and truly undercharged me for his labor, which was super appreciated. The local neighborhood computer store is such a rare and precious thing. I really value these things, so I wish I could give 5 stars. Most people that had my experience would give him 1 star, though. He's good at what he does, but has a serious chip on his shoulder. This guy had my computer for nearly 5 months! Not ONCE over this whole period did I receive a phone call from him about the status of my PC, forcing me to have to check up on him every few weeks. It was frustrating, because it's not in my nature to be demanding. When I found out he didn't install the same motherboard as I originally had in my computer, I wasn't bothered about it (many people would be), until I realized it didn't have an onboard Bluetooth adapter, which I rely on for several devices. I thought it only reasonable to ask that he either properly install the same motherboard I brought it in with, or just get me a cheap adapter. Man did that set him off. He started shit talking his other customers, bitching and moaning, and generally being so unpleasant it wasn't worth it over a $5 adapter. He's not reliable and doesn't effectively communicate. For me, that's not worth the very good price he has on repairs. read more

I give them 5 stars but I would give them 500 stars if it was possible. I tried the other best rated on yelp for fixing my macbook which i spilled coke on, the other places were not only unhelpful, but they were over-priced and seemed not to care at all. Cosmic computer not only were sympathetic to my financial situation (as a student) but they also gave me spectacular tips on how to fix my computer for the best cost. I would recommend these guys to anyone over any other computer repair store in The City. Since that time I brought at least 3 different laptops with different problems to his place and always got the greatest service. He is knowledgeable, reliable, fast; and, moreover, very HONEST. When I brought a laptop that was constantly turning off, he looked and told me to buy a new power adapter - no charge.
