He is just a scam who try to convince people wasting a lot of money who don't know much about computer. I have put my pc for 2 weeks and he didn't even touch it. When I went back to the shop after 2 weeks and ask if he is done with my pc, he just randomly telling me my mother board, hard drive, Ram memory and graphic card is fried up in the short circuit. And he is trying to charge me 800 for replacing and repair. I don't believe him so I took my pc back and went to the friend who know about repairing a little bit and my friend just replaced the graphic card and everything works fine. The shop charge me 65$ for investigation of my pc(which he never touched my pc) and I did have to pay it. Well, great lessons learned. read more

My MacBook Pro screen broke, so I did some searching and talked to a few placed. When I called David and told him about my problem, he was very transparent with me that a lot of the screens for sale online were knock-offs and I'd have to search around to find an authentic one. I asked him for some tips on how to tell a real screen from a fake screen online and then he told me he could easily install it for me. After some searching, I found a used screen on Ebay. I ordered and received it within a week. I took it to David on a weekend day and he installed it for me and had my computer ready in less than 3 hours. 12/11/18 drop off computer - told him I haven't connected computer in a while and the display is not coming on but I know hdmi works. Said he will charge 1 hr fee just to look at it 12/19/18 finally does the "1 hour check up" and calls and says he has to revive the computer yada yada and doesn't know if it will work. I ask how much, he says twice the hourly rate, but if he can't fix it, he will only charge the one hour 12/22/18 calls and says he fixed computer and said I have to pick up today, or he is going on vacation until 01/04/18 01/12/18 I enter store with gf to pick up computer. I say I'm here to pick up computer, He literally stands there saying nothing. Awkward time goes by, I say I haven't paid yet. then he goes I know, will that be card? Even my girlfriend was like well that was awkward I know I left my power cord with him and ask him about it and he denies it. He doesn't mention anything about what he did to the computer, I just asked if it's fixed and he says yes. I go home, have to find another power cord because I know he had my original one. Luckily it's universal so I use the one from my printer, plug everything in and nothing is still displaying, I give him a call. And he explains I need to plug hdmi into the video card slot. I do that, display pops up. Honestly this was a horrible experience. Nothing could have been wrong with my computer to begin with, he just charged double. Didn't explain what he fixed, I was just a computer noob and didn't know to where to plug in hdmi because there was two ports and I only knew of one. Lied about my power cord. I wish I didn't have to write such a low review for this establishment, as I used to recommend my friends to David over the years because he had been helpful and polite in the past but my most recent transaction was indicative of poor and likely shady business practices. My desktop wouldn't even power up so I brought it to David. I left it for diagnostic with my phone number. After weeks of no responses or answering of my calls I went in physically. He didn't remember me and said that that it had been put in storage and that he'd get back to me when he had retrieved it. More weeks passed without answering the phone or leaving me a voicemail or email. I went in again, and he said he was would have it in a few days. I went back on the day he specified and said it would be an hour or two for some reason. I left and waited at a cafe. I came back, paid for the new power source and labor and went home. Later that night after finally booting it smelled of burning plastic and shut down, to not even start again. I returned it to the store. He opened it and said it was not actually the power source as he had previously stated and that it was the motherboard that was damaged. I was pretty sure at this point that he was trying to take me for a ride because of my lack of knowledge of the hardware. So I said ok and left with my tower. He forgot who I was each time I went in personally and held my computer captive for over two months. He did not offer a discount on the first endeavor or even on the next of installing a new motherboard which he claimed was corroded and that he has ...soldered for some reason to alleviate. I hope this was just things not working out and falling into the wrong place and time because David had been so knowledgeable and considerate in the past. My teen son did his first computer build a couple of years ago. He attempted upgrading the CPU a couple weeks ago, but had trouble getting the unit to work and was feeling defeated. We called the owner, and he said he could take a look, could we leave the PC for a couple days, etc. When we arrived, he talked computers with my son for a few minutes and before long, he was digging deep into the hardware on the spot, researching, solving, and explaining all the while. They have a policy that disable people can get a free computer but before when I was there at the computer store, the owner discrimated me somehow. I rather not get into details. It's like it knows I have to be someplace without fail...the N Judah invariably picks such days to go totally ballistic. Train after train of us passengers, chucked to the sidewalk by Hillway, near UCSF. Calling Cosmic Computers at 6:58pm, right before their closing time - I gave them my sob story: "I'm almost home...N Judah sucks...please please say you're gonna be there a little longer." David was nice enough to hang out a bit and I made it to their shop, just a hair past 7:15pm. And he had my power supply switched out, without any crazy charge for labor, we traded info on our favorite sushi spots in the city, and I was out the door with a fixed cpu, and my old power supply in a box - cuz David said I could get PG&E to reimburse me for the fried unit from the recent power outages - by 7:30pm. My girlfriend needed to fix her laptop due to the charging port acting up. Opening up the laptop took about 20 minutes (took some time to find the correct size screwdriver) or so to confirm the damage. And so, we took it out for repair seeing how they would be able to order the part for us and take care of it. Seeing how a replacement charging port was about 25$, and at the worst case, a replacement motherboard was about 60$, we were expecting labor to be 50$ MAX seeing how easy it was to disassemble the laptop (there are even youtube videos where people were disassembling in a lot less time). $185. $25 for the replacement and $160 for "the labor" WHAT LABOR? There is no soldering to do, there is no fancy work you have to do. $20, 30 minutes at max to disassemble and reassemble the computer after placing the port in, in their case, is worth $160 of labor according to the guy who quoted me (based on the reviews, I'm assuming it was David; correct me if I'm wrong). Don't kid yourself David, ain't nobody got time for your BS and nobody in their right mind is going to be paying you $160 for 30 minutes of work. I had a hard time containing my laughter after he boldly claimed that replacing the port takes a lot of work when it took me a little bit less than 20 minutes to fully disassemble this laptop. (mind you I usually work with desktops). After telling him how it shouldn't take more than 20 minutes for someone to just disassemble who does this for a living, he gets a bit edgy and tells me to do it myself. Luckily, I'm more "tech savvy" (As stated before, I fix and build desktops and I also work as the IT in one of the colleges within my university) than most people who visit this place and leave a 5 star review after being ripped off and avoided being another sucker. So yes, instead I've decided to just fix it myself. But the moral of the story is to make sure to visit several stores and do some research (as most people blindly go in, thinking whatever they're quoted is a "good deal") before this one due to how this place will charge 3-4x the cost of labor. read more

You know, I get so caught up using Yelp to map out the city's various "scenes", it's easy to forget its other, rootsier purpose: helping people find trusted providers of those rarely-but-urgently-needed niche services. Like when your hard drive fails. And you've stupidly been putting off buying an external drive for years now. Yes, I am a programmer, but contrary to what my parents might think, that does not mean I can fix any computer-related mishap (especially if it's a hardware issue). That distinction instead goes to the 3 geeky Asian dudes at Cosmic Computer, a veritable IT Fire Department who have no doubt saved the digital lives of thousands of panicky customers. A classic Sunset scenario if ever there was one--it could almost be a sitcom, or maybe a computer version of ER. In my particular case, they asked for 2 days, at which point it would be $65 if they could recover the data, otherwise no charge. I kept my fingers crossed, and sure enough they pulled it off. All in all it was a huge bargain for the effort saved, and more than made up for the residual bit of wounded nerd pride I had at not being able to fix it myself. read more

I took an external hard drive here a while back to see if they could salvage any of the data off it. Supposedly, there were probably bad clusters on it said the manufacturer when I called saying my computer wouldn't read it. They suggested to erase the drive and see if that worked. I didn't want to and at some point wanted to take it into a computer repair shop to see if they could sort it out. I had old photos and such on it I wanted to keep.' I brought it in and the guy took my name and number down, saying he would call me soon letting me know if they could get anything off the drive or not. Well, I sorta forgot about my drive and when I realized, I thought "Why haven't they called me??" I finally called them and said I dropped of my hard drive a few weeks before and never heard back. The guy said that they called and left a message. Wha? I sure as hell didn't get a voice mail on my cell. I was irked. I went and picked it up that following week. They didn't charge me for any work since they couldn't access any data. He suggested I take it to some other type of company which I obviously don't remember. Something like a company that specializes in data rescue. I'm like whatever. It didn't bother me that they couldn't obtain any data, but it bothers me that they could have kept my drive for who knows how long if I didn't remember to call them. I mean don' they think "Well, it's been a couple weeks, maybe we should call again and make sure she got the message??" Either way, if they actually called my cell phone or not (they probably called someone else's number and left a message on their phone), I won't be returning here again for anything. read more

Literally saved my life!! My dog knocked over my laptop and the whole screen broke and so much more. I was panicking because as a college student, I NEED my laptop. Thank goodness I found this place. This place was a life saver! Yes, I'll have to confess I had my laptop loosely tossed into a backpack which I left for the movers to move... and I was surprised the next morning when it didn't work. I called all around and could barely get anyone on the phone - when I did they said I'd have to pay $100 for them to even look at it, and they couldn't get back to me within 72 hours. What?! 72 hours without my laptop?! Enter Cosmic computer. I called and they said they could look at it right away. Unfortunately, the computer was beyond repair, but they were able to salvage my files, sold me a new IBM Thinkpad at a great price, and transferred the backed up files to the new computer, at no additional charge. read more

I drove all the way from the east bay after two coworkers recommended David for computer repair. I brought my computer in on a Saturday morning. Upon examining it, David told me my hard drive needed to be replaced. He quoted me $178, which I thought was rather high. I told him I was very concerned because I had pictures that I couldn't replace over the last several years, that I really needed to have saved. He said he understood and would try his best. So we agree, and he tells me to call his store on Monday. I called Monday to check on the progress of my computer. The person who answered the phone didn't know who I was, or what the status was of my computer. I was told to call back. It took several days and at least 2 more calls, before I was told on Friday, that I could pick up my computer the next day. When I arrived at the shop, the first thing I asked David, was had he been able to save my pictures? He shook his head and said no, that my computers hard drive had many viruses on it and he did not want to risk it. He mentioned that the viruses probably came from sites, that my 11 year old son, had visited, involving games and other video gaming sites. Even though I pay yearly for a subscription to Norton for virus protection!!! I was so upset. I asked David, if there was any way he could possibly save my pictures ? He said not without posing risk of infecting my new harddrive drive. I left his store without even taking my old hard drive. I was mostly upset the remainder of the day. Finally, at the end of the day, I sent a friend to go all the way back to San Francisco to retrieve my old hard drive so, I that can I get another opinion. Because David knew how important my pictures were to me, he should have communicated to me when he knew he could not save them. He could have taken the time and consideration to call me, sometime in between the time I left my computer with him, and he repaired it, to when he knew he could not salvage any of my pictures. He should have told me and given me more options. Later, when my friend picked up my hard drive David admitted that there were ways to save the pictures. He mentioned a lot of computer jargon. It was evident to me at this time, he was just too lazy to do what was needed to save my pictures. A good business person who wants to please his customer, would have told me what options were available, given me a new price quote, if necessary and let me decide if it was worth it or not. Reputation and " word of mouth" is everything especially to a small business owner!!! I told my coworkers who were very upset to hear my experience. Needless to say, none of us will be using or referring anyone to this shop again. (only one star because he tolerated endless questions and interruptions from my curious 11 year old). read more

Wow! I never been so upset walking out of a store before.. I came in to Cosmic Computer lugging my heavy computer into the store and David was there. I explained that the problem was with booting up my P.C., and that it could possibly be the hardware. David was arrogant and kept trying to argue with me on computer knowledge when I was simply just trying to fix my PC. Obviously I am not a computer wizard and that is why I brought my PC to him in the first place!! David turned on my computer for less than 5 minutes and told me everything works fine. All I needed to do was a fresh install of Windows on my computer. "Is that your solution to every problem David? I have 10 years of Pictures & Music in one of my hard drives!! What kind of recommendation is that??" He didn't even offer to sell or install Windows for me so I had to carry my heavy PC out of the store without getting anything done... ***Also several years before Cosmic Computer Scratched my PC case. David denied it of course and I was a little upset, but I let it go.. Now that I realize he's simply a cocky jerk I feel like it is my duty to let everyone know... So what did I do with my PC??? I searched on Yelp and found (Fix-PC) which on the same day, the IT specialist was surprisingly available and came to my house to do the repair. It happened to be 1 bad hard drive that was affecting my other hard drives from booting. Luckily he was able to salvage all the information I needed from the failing hard drive. He answered all my questions without the attitude, and fixed everything I asked for without a problem. He was quick, efficient and dirt cheap for everything that I asked for. I didn't have to lug a heavy metal PC around or wait weeks for a repair! I felt as if I got so much done in 1 hour for what I paid for. Cosmic Computer is probably a place you would go to repair broken Laptop screens. If your looking to fix real PC problems.. Last week my four year old HP decides to stop recognizing that it is plugged into the charger. Of COURSE this happens while I'm freaking out for finals, when else would it happen? I think, maybe it's the cord itself and run all over town trying to find one to replace it because four years old is ancient in computer world. That doesn't work. I start to panic. I bring it in to them as they are highly recommended by a family friend and he's replaced a bad hard drive for me before. Andy dismantles the computer in front of me, breaking my poor little non-tech heart and with vast amounts of concern regarding the data on my computer because who backs stuff up? Not me! He tells me to call him tomorrow and he'll let me know if he can fix it. CAN fix it?? Dude, it's finals! Well, bad news. It's toast. It's a giant flying rectangular frisbee. BUT, good news, he can get all the data off, no problemo. Swing by with an external hard drive and they transfer over all my important school docs, oh, and all those super important iTunes purchases. So although I am a proud owner of a new mac, they got all my data and got it to me with minimum heart palpitations. I would take a half a start off just because they aren't so great with getting back to you on the phone but since Yelp doesn't have half stars they get the full five for fixing my problem and dealing gently with my non-tech, totally retarded self during a high stress time. read more

A really nice neighborhood shop you should consider if your computer needs service or you are looking for upgrades, or a new computer. They offer a free diagnostic on their computer repairs. The proprietor David is a very sweet guy, really friendly and open. I took a newer Dell in for service. It would not boot up, and I wanted to hand it down to one of my kids. He cleaned it up and got it working, reformatted the drive, etc. He did not try to sell me anything like a larger hard drive or more memory. He remembered that I had said that my son loved iTunes, and he installed iTunes before I picked it up. All for less than some soul-less big box corporate store. While I was in the store, quite a few people from the neighborhood came in to visit with David, ask him for advice, or just say 'Hi." It is clear that David has built systems for a lot of folks in the Sunset, and has repaired computers for a lot of others. Check it out. November 5, 2007 Update: David is my hero! I lugged my desktop in because it was making a scary noise when it booted up. He plugged it in, looked it over carefully, and quizzed me about my symtoms (and fears of malware, etc.). Called these guys up since I dropped my laptop and it no longer had sound. Sucks. So after watching everything I could on youtube that had subtitles I decided I wanted sound back so I decide to give these guys a call. They quickly diagnose the problem over the phone (w/o charging me) and tell me that my motherboard would need to be replaced and would be $$$ and they suggest that I go with some $20 usb headphones from Target. My desktop machine lost all internet connectivity, but I knew the internets were still coming into our house. Found David & company on Yelp on my laptop, and called. They refused to quote a price for service until they could diagnose the issue, and refused to diagnose over the phone. I admired that, after another store opted to diagnose over the phone, insisted that what I had was a virus, and told me it would cost $240 to fix. David and his crew said they needed a day to diagnose, and that it "Could be $1 could be $1 billion!" but the hourly rate is $65. Sweet. Turns out, I didn't have a virus. Nope. Just a conflict of interest between ZoneAlarm and my latest Windows update, which took out my TCP/IP settings at the registry level. David and company spent a significant amount of time figuring this out, then managed to fix my machine without losing any data. But they only charged me for 1 hour of work: $65. They rule. read more
