I could of used a bit more spice on my chicken...but I like a spicy chicken. This was good...just no real spice and that's ok. Potatoes was homemade and so was the roll. Not the quality as previous experiences. We had the Fried chicken dinner and two Chicken fried chicken dinners. The fried chicken looked and tasted like it could have been cooked earlier and then re-fried?? or maybe it sat under the warmer too long?? The wing I had was very dark and greasy. The other entree's were ok, none of our food seemed to be fresh hot. Even the dinner rolls (which in the past were hot, light and fluffy) were dense and lukewarm. The food was not horrible, but definitely not up to the quality like before. There was one redeeming quality and that was the Cinnamon rolls. Dirty to the max. Most of the staff look despondent, the hostess looks ready to burst into tears at any second. The food is served in large portions but is very bland. Our travels took us from the home turf of Louisville, Kentucky westward to Missouri and Kansas. Taking in a KC Royals game at "the K" on Friday, with the Royals on the short end of the stick to the Cardinals, we spent a Saturday morning at the Outlet Mall near the Kansas City Speedway, then saw the massive place called Nebraska Furniture Mart. There are only a few of these stores, mostly in the central part of the country, but omg the concept of combining an electronics, flooring, furnishings, toys, furniture, outdoors, and probably a dozen other things I am forgetting under one very, very, very large roof (with two floors) is amazing. The volume of goods and variations of brands is impressive. They are online, so we'll be checking that out too. We headed back to the hotel after spending a lot of time in "Nebraska" and decided to take in the Corner Cafe, right by our hotel. Its a western farmhouse kind of feel. Hardwood floors, with a country home style exterior. Wood is the theme, much like a chain steakhouse from the 1970's. Nothing wrong with that especially when the food is a heckuva lot better than a Ponderosa. Corner Cafe has several locations in the Independence, MO area. The vibe is akin to a Cracker Barrel, but the grub is in our opinion many levels better. When you walk in, you are presented with a display case of pies and other sweet treats. You glance in the kitchen and see the yeast rolls rising on racks. The perfume of cinnamon wafts through the air, for good reason. These sweet rolls are monsters. Six to 8 inches across and two to three inches tall. In addition to the sweets, the menu's are breakfast specific, all day long, and lunch and dinner choices for the other menu. We had breakfast earlier, so I did not even look at those choices. Menu prices are in the 8 to 16 dollar range. My compatriot went with chicken and noodled over mashed potatoes, with a side of onion rings. Yea, an odd combination, but the onion rings are made right there and we are suckers for trying good ones. Yea, these were good ones. Lightly breaded, deep fried perfect with a good quality onion. A thing of beauty, even if they don't kosher with homestyle country chicken and pasta. The member of my party was very happy with all pieces of her dining ensemble. I munched on a few of the rings too. Super. I went with the 2 piece fried chicken (white), with mashed potatoes and slaw. No disappointments with any of that. Chicken was fried well and still juicy on the inside. Slaw was the usual cabbage affair with a shot of green onion in there. The mashed potatoes and white gravy were partnered well with the chicken. Star of the show was the hunky yeast rolls just out of the kitchen. These are not a light yeast roll, yet a more substantial weighty one. Add butter and you got bread nirvana. One is all you will need. We did order a cinnamon roll to go. I would wager 4 people could eat off that thing. It'll travel with us when we head back home. So, our late Saturday lunch was a big winner. Both of us really did not know what to expect for this visit, but judging by the number of people already there and a lot of folks queued up outside when we left, Corner Cafe is a well liked spot by locals. Count us Kentuckians in with the locals. We had a great server with a friendly and agreeable affirmation to having the mashed potatoes under the chicken and noodles. Service was fast and we were in and out in less than an hour. Even the table busser was a pleasant and hard working young man. A healthy tip was left for the good folks there. SO dissappointed in the pie order we picked up for Christmas. Will never make this mistake again. One out of 3 pies were edible. The website offered curbside pickup, the receipt said Curbside pickup order but instead you had to go inside, stand in line and wait for them to put the order together and tjen be checked out, even tho I paid online and the money had already been deducted. My husband and I just moved to the area and have been trying to find a good breakfast spot and a good place for down home desserts. We saw the reviews for this place and decided to give it a shot. Let me start by saying the highlight of our experience here was our waitress; she was awesome! I ordered a hot chocolate to start. It arrived and was plainly just a cup of hot chocolate from a packet, without even any whipped cream on top. Even Denny's (which I will never go back to) gives you whipped cream! This made me nervous about our meal to follow. My husband ordered a fruit plate, French toast, and an English muffin. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs. The fruit was pretty good, but it basically stops there. The English muffin was very thick and doughy and the French toast was nothing to write home about. The eggs were flavorless and the chicken fried steak - wow. It was bland, rubbery, and covered in the worst gravy I've ever seen and tasted. The gravy had weird pinkish/gray chunks in it of turkey? sausage? I'm not sure, but definitely wasn't a fan. I added some salt thinking it might help. It didn't. The hash browns were alright and so was the buttered toast, so at least we got some food in us. We were so put off by our meal that we didn't even try the pie. I'm usually willing to give places a second chance, but for a diner that doesn't even offer whipped cream on hot chocolate, I'm going to have to pass here. read more

Corner Cafe is a downgraded version of Cracker Barrel. While the building looks like a barn, the booths inside could have been taken straight out of the 50's. I couldn't grasp the theme they were trying to portray. I ordered one of their Wednesday specials called "The Burrito with Everything." The tortilla was stale. The meat inside was bland. Shouldn't the "special" be amazing? We were seated far too close to the kitchen. I could barely hear my friend talk over the noise of the cooks yelling at each other. The prices are high and the food has lost a touch of something with their rolls and pies. We go once or twice a month and the rolls were missing something and the crust was overcooked and the pie was missing its touch. and the potatoes tasted a little like a mix and real to them the gravy was a little watery and not so thick as I am used to from the Liberty location. The Riverside location has been cold on the side and I have found it also missing a thing in its food too. I say this not to hurt them but cause I went to them three times in the same week at different times and kept finding the same issue. Grandmas favorite place to go so we went it was really good. Always very respectable portions, the service wasn't bad. It was spaced out for social distancing which was nice and we did have to wear a mask to the table. The chicken noodle soup could have had more chicken but was still satisfactory. I upgraded my side to the side winder fries and I would HIGHLY recommend it. I made a pick up order but ran into some people I knew and decided to eat at the restaurant. Funny I had to go pay at the register and eat in Togo containers. My order wasn't ready when we were seated. Then we tried to pay at the register to leave and we're told you can't you have to wait on your server! Where is the customer service? My four piece chicken dinner was two breast and two wings! Really if I asked for that they would say no but I guess it only matters what is convenient for the restaurant at the time. Absolutely terrible. The prices are higher than Black Bear or Perkins(Comparable restaurants). I had the onion rings that I said before they were the best in KC. They came out greesy and half done. The meal took 35 minutes to get from the time we placed it. Not from when we sat down. The service was mediocre at best. It is a good thing that we do not live near here. We would probably weigh 300 lbs. The food was excellent, the service superb. I had the Fri night special pot roast with potatoes, carrots, and gravy. For my side dish I had the house made onion rings. Every bite was wonderful. My wife had a vegetable plate with onion rings, mashed potatoes with cream gravy, cooked cabbage, green beans, and coleslaw. Again, everything was excellent, especially the cooked cabbage. We got cinnamon rolls to eat for breakfast. Our server was Corey. She was attentive and provided top notch service. I love love love this place! Any time someone asks where I want to go to dinner, I choose corner cafe. I love their chicken pecan salad & their chicken fried chicken. Rolls come with most of the meals you order and they're fresh and buttery. & their deserts...OMG the best! From their pecan pie to their banana split pie....and my ultimate favorite, their huge cinnamon rolls, which are to die for. Their portions are huge! I can almost never finish my food. It tastes like home cooking but better. They really have the best comfort food in town, in my opinion! Weekends get really busy here, but they're usually pretty quick and the wait isn't long. The waitresses are so nice and take care of you as well as stay on top of your drinks. I have been coming here for years and always have a great experience.
