We visited Johnny Ray's twice because we wanted to give it a fair chance. The first time, we stopped in for ice cream. The restaurant itself is super cute, fun, and has a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, the ice cream wasn't for me. It was overloaded with toppings to the point that I could barely taste the ice cream itself. I love a good balance between the ice cream and the mix-ins, and this just felt like there was way too much going on. The toppings completely overpowered the flavor of the ice cream. We decided to give Johnny Ray's another shot and came back to try the food. Sadly, I wasn't impressed. For the price, I honestly felt like I could have made a better meal at home. Nothing stood out, and it just wasn't worth the money in my opinion. I really wanted to like this place because it's such a fun, inviting spot, but after giving it two separate chances, we've decided we won't be returning for either the food or the desserts. I hate leaving negative reviews, but I also believe in giving an honest account of my experience. read more

We stopped in after a late afternoon wrestling in the area. My husband and son got the 1/2 double with cheese and I got a ham and cheese on toast. All the food was delicious! Got chocolate and vanilla shakes to go that hit the spot! The waitress was friendly and the diner itself was small but super cute! We'd stop back in if in the area again! read more

Stopped in here during lunch time, the place was busy. I was able to get the last seat at the bar at the time. The one waitress working was on top of it. Top notch service!! Even with the place packed she was getting drinks, delivering food, getting tickets out and checking up on people with very little wait. The food came out relatively quickly, and was a good size order of burger and fries. The burger reminds me of when I was able to get a good roadside burger, I believe the only thing that was missing was a pie display. The front window says they have a car show on the 3rd Saturday of the Month. A car show with the burger shack would make a great way stop spend a Saturday!! read more

I've been to Johnny Rays a few times! Love the service and atmosphere, but unfortunately this time I got a case of food poisoning... I ordered a vanilla shake, 1/4 burger (everything on it) and corn nuggets. Let's just say a couple hours go by and well... my food comes back up. My dad brought me here this evening. Was a lil gem! Old school cool...booths on this sides and a wrap around bar. Lots on nostalgia on the walls and a ms pac man and a jukebox. If you don't get ur burger right here...you ordered incorrectly and don't complain. Our waitress was on point!!! Food was delivered quickly, fresh and hot. I've been wanting to try this place for years, having grown up on HiBoy. Burger had no flavor. No salt or pepper apparently used during cooking. The bun was massive... which might be ok if there was a lb of meat, but I just got the single. Fries were also unsalted and there were plenty, but half were soggy and limp. Service was pretty slow as well. I'll reserve my grease intake for HiBoys! read more

They still have great fried sides, but over the last year the steak burgers have changed, and are just not as tasty as they used to be. Not terrible, mind you. But not amazing as they were in the past. The kids meal is still a great deal, and I enjoy the chicken sandwiches... but I couldn't let the former 5 stars stand as the quality and taste has declined and has not improved over the last few months. read more

Been coming here since I was a kid. I don't know who this dude is they have had working the drive thru for a while now, but he's rude and he's messed our orders up multiple times now. This place used to always be super friendly service but this guy is flat out apathetic and rude and doesn't listen to the orders then gets mad and asks you to repeat yourself 2 or 3 times.. When I'm only ordering 3 items ..I shouldn't have to repeat myself several times. This guy needs to work on his attitude or gtfo. read more

Overall not a bad place, but is VERY expensive, 3 burgers, one with fries, another with onion rings, and the last with tator tots then a vanilla shake, 55 dollars. And the shake doesn't taste like genuine vanilla, it tastes super artificial, not necessarily bad but not something you'd expect from a diner, other then the price which brought it down to 3 stars for me, it's not bad, burgers are good, the shake was very subpar, and the price is ridiculous, I may go back but the price for it all is just insane. If it were to go down, to probably $30, I'd gladly go back for all that stuff. read more

This is now one of my favorite places to eat in Lees Summit. I love diner food and always have but diners have pretty much disappeared. This place is very small but has huge flavor! Everyone here is super friendly and is pretty much like a family. I enjoyed the Pork Tenderloin with fries. First off, this sandwich was massive. I could barely eat half. It was super amazing! I also enjoyed a side of corn nuggets & a strawberry shake. SO much food but it all came fresh and hot. I loved every minute of it. I had driven the long drive from Branson to Independence, and I'm a trooper.I don't stop for anything. I was starved, and decided to stop at Johnny Ray's. It is off of 3rd street in Lee's Summit over on 50 high-way. Walking in there, it reminded me of the Wheel in Sedalia. The Wheel is no longer with us. But Johnny Ray's is always there. They are a hamburger joint. The classic cheeseburger with fries sit down and be served place. The cheeseburgers are thin to thick, and I liked my cheese burger.My mom thought it was too thin and too well done. The booths are red and it looks like a diner in the '50's. I really liked Johnny Rays. It was a good place to stop. On certain nights they have cruise nights, and rightly so. It's been around forever. Everything about this was basic - not good, not bad, just basic. The cheeseburger didn't have ANY flavor, but was fine with additional condiments. The fries weren't at all seasoned, which was fine for me because I don't like heavily salted items, but mine was a bit undercooked. The strawberry shake tasted like vanilla, even though there was visibly strawberry flavoring in the shake. The service was fine and friendly, but didn't stand out as exceptional. This place is a Lee's Summit staple - been here forever and known for the cool vintage cars nights. However, we stopped coming here because their turnaround times are brutal. On two separate occasions, we ordered onion rings and corn nuggets and sat in the drive through line for 15 minutes and 25 minutes. No explanation and no check ins through that timeframe. Not sure what's going on but the food is absolutely not good enough to justify the long wait and lack of decent service. Would avoid unless you like sitting for half an hour to wait for greasy "fast" food. read more
