This is the the place. And it's been the place for a very, very long time. It even predates me and I'm nearly prehistoric at this point. The parking lot is... interesting, but there's generally more than enough spots. The drive thru is tightly wrapped by the street, but is easy enough to get into. The decor is perfectly average. There's nothing eye popping, except for the old original pricing on some boards in the back. The food itself, from the namesake burgers to the tenderloin sandwiches to the fries and onion rings; everything is just good and priced well. It's not Culver's level elite, but it's a nice step up from the McDonald's of the world. It comes out hot and is always right. The staff is always friendly and they move quickly. So if you're in the neighborhood and need a quick lunch or dinner, it's worth stopping in. read more

The nostalgia with this restaurant keeps me coming back. The food has held up well over the years. Might be time to revisit the prices on the menu for some items. $6 is a bit too much for a Jr. Big Boy. read more

Almost $8. For a. JR. Dbl cheeseburger. $4.+ For Tater Tots Who can afford a drink? Nice enough at the drive thru window, but today my burger bun tasted like old corn tortillas. Bad grease maybe? Not good for such an expensive burger. I usually only go for a taste tot. Even those aren't as good as they were a few years back. What happened? read more

The place was amazingly clean and well run with friendly staff behind the counter. The parking lot was gigantic, compared to the size of the restaurant. The star of the food we got were definitely the tots and onion rings. The burgers... well... they were burgers. The happiest customer on our visit was the 6 year old. He ordered chocolate milk, and they mixed a glass of milk with chocolate syrup right in front of him (without skimping on the chocolate!). He was delighted! He was equally delighted in the free ice cream cone that comes with the kids meal. He devoured his burger nibbled at the fries, and covered his face in smiles and ice cream (when do kids learn not to be so messy, lol?!) Happy little customer :-) The adults got bacon burgers and split fries, tots, and onion rings. The fries were ok, the tots were crispy and perfect, and the rings were just crispy greasy yummy goodness. We definitely ordered too much food, but enjoyed it! The burgers were just ok. An ok mix of flavor, with tomato and pickle and some kind of drippy sauce. The bun was kinda an afterthought, and didn't hold up, making the meat the main player. But the burger as a whole just didn't hit any high notes. I'd eat it, if you put it in front of me, but it isn't a fast food standout. In all, sure, they will have us as a repeat customer. Nothing about the experience was bad, and I'd visit just to get some good onion rings. Next time, I'll try the bacon hotdog and see what that's about. read more

The breading on the onion rings was coming off, and they were very greasy and limp. My sack was greasy on the outside as grease soaked through. I sat it on the floor mat to take it home. A regular FF was smaller than McDonalds and very limp also, for $4+ seemed disproportionate to what you received. Double Hamburger almost $10.00 and thin enough to make you feel if it was a junior double! The dab of onions on the sandwich was completely hidden in the mustard. One could barely see them let alone taste them. The pickles were excellent! Customer service was ok but the young lady at the counter (the only cashier apparently serving customers) never stopped talking to another person on the customer side the entire time I was there. The other person was just visiting with the counter person. Thankfully another employee delivered my sack because the cashier never missed a word with her visitor's conversation. I had to ask the sack deliverer where the ketchup was because the cashier was still busy talking with the girl on the customer side of the counter past my leaving. read more

I've been eating at this restaurant for 56 years off and on. Had lunch there yesterday and was disappointed with the quality of the food and the prices. A burger, tots and Dr. Pepper came to $15.51, not including tip. The food itself was a disappointment-dry burger, stale bun. lousy tomatoes. I've spent my life (and a lot of money) supporting local businesses, but I have to say this restaurant is no longer comparable to Culver's, Freddy's, In-N-Out, or 5 Guys. Look down 40 Highway and it's a wasteland of businesses that did not evolve or rise to meet the challenges presented by the ubiquitous chain offerings. Hopefully that won't be the case here but I'd be surprised if this business is still around in 5 years. read more

Our first time eating here. It was ok but not worth the money or worth going back. The drive thru menu board was clean and clear. Easy to read. Ordering was a snap. Very friendly staff. Service was pretty good. They made my food quick so it was hot and fresh. I was let down by the quality of the burgers. The buns were very thin, maybe they smashed them but way too fragile and I couldn't pick up my burger without it falling apart. Flavor was decent, nothing to set it apart from any other burger place. Honestly, for the amount this meal cost me, I could've gotten better food at a much better price at McDonald's. It was "ok" but. It worth the price tag. Won't be back. read more

A random stop for us on a road trip. Had never heard of it and didn't know what to expect...but you usually can't go wrong with burgers! There was a line of about 5 customers when we arrived, but the cashier was fast and efficient. We received our order quickly and all was accurate. Definitely a fast food restaurant vibe with booth seating inside. They have the original menu on the wall...interesting to see how prices have changed. Great food! Burgers were tasty and filling. But the onion rings were definitely the most talked about item!! The grilled chicken sandwich was good, as well as the French fries. We enjoyed our quick stop while passing through! read more

Things I experience at the restaurant: 1. (to a small child) "Grandma and Grandpa came here right after their wedding. Are you ready to have your mind blown?" 2. Adequately staffed and were cleaning the tables ahead of time. 3. (from behind the counter) "Does anyone want this? Guess I'm gonna donate it." And a man proceeds to find me and hand me a fresh ice cream cone. 10/10 read more

What can I say about this place: it's classic American style cheeseburgers and rings with a shake. Then you throw in the convenience of fast food-it's awesome!! Today I ordered a side of Big Boy sauce and decided to use it with both my double cheeseburger and onion rings. Well dang, now I gotta cut my calories rest of the week. But it's so worth it! If you want one of the best cheeseburgers in KC (and the best onion rings I've ever had) you came to the right place. Well done Big Boy! Big Boy also hosts car shows and has a great desert menu. Their staff have always been friendly and helpful when I've worked with them. You can't go wrong here! read more

Big Boy Burgers - Pork Tenderloin and Small O Ring - Burgers Near Me - Independence, Missouri

Both my girlfriend and I had a Tenderloin sandwich that had no flavor whatsoever, we ordered a large onion ring to share and they were overcooked and dry. They were obviously cooked in dirty oil because they were dark brown in color and I thought the price was ridiculous. read more

Tried Big Boy for the first time today. Ordered online and had my husband pick up so I cannot comment on the outside or inside of this establishment. He picked up the order in the drive thru. I ordered two bacon burgers, onion rings, fries and two kids meals. Came out to be around $40. Upon inspection of the bag I noticed they wrote my name wrong on the outside, no big deal. However, the onion rings were missing from my order. So I was highly disappointed about that. Not good first impressions at all. The food was just okay. Nothing we would ever rush back for. Big Boy is better imo. read more

Big Boy's Restaurant has been at the same location since 1962. It's served Independence as a great stopping spot to grab a cheeseburger and also a shake. I'm vegetarian, but I love this place...which makes me not much of a faithful vegetarian. The sandwiches are large, with an over-sized hamburger, (I order my cheeseburgers plain). The French fries are crunchy, and one receives an ample amount. What totally nips it in the bug are the onion rings. OMG...my favorite item on the entire menu. They are not frozen, but made from scratch, and are large, and I can't rave on them enough. You can smell the onion rings outside. The other menu items are tenderloins, hot dogs, fish sandwich (another of my favorite, as I try to stay away from beef as often as I can). They have the best tarter tots ever. They have a children's menu, and Jr. sized sandwiches. The shakes are so good. They are one of the best shakes in the Independence area. The cyclone shakes with Butterfingers or Oreos beg to be ordered. The shakes come in a variety of flavors. The restaurant also serves ice cream sundaes and ice cream cones. Let's talk about the cherry limeaides! Perfectly mixed, and you know when you order a cherry lime aide, and you drink it to the bottom , and there's no cherry or lime in it? Not so with Big Boy's cherry limeaides. The half of a lime is in the bottom of the glass. The cherries are also in the bottom of the glass. When ordering, you order, and wait for the meal. They have a drive through that, every single day at noon is backed up clear to 40. highway. But don't let this cause you to go somewhere else. The staff are efficient, and the line moves quick. The bathrooms are clean, and the restaurant is bright. The food is a bit higher priced than fast food chains. It is worth it. read more

Big Boy Burgers - cars parked in a parking lot - Burgers Near Me - Independence, Missouri

Talk about a blast from the past! I have not been to one of these in a very long time. For one I don't know very many of them around anymore. I was over on this side of town for an appointment and was going to pull in for a bite at a change sandwich shop when I saw it down the street. I zipped on down and ran in. It was like stepping into the past. Robin egg blue counters, the menu board that still had the little letters stuck to it. Everything in the place; lights, cups, etc. all covered in the classic Pepsi logo. The kid at the counter took my order and made my drink from a vintage 80s fountain and handed me a paper ticket with my order number on it. As I waited I looked around. It looked and felt like a small hometown and this was the good old Tasty Freeze from years ago... ok so I would have been a kid at that time but I don't remember the burgers being half as tasty. Get over here and give this a try some time when you are feeling nostalgic. Thanks for reading, and keep on eating! read more

Go way back to the early days of drive ins. Enjoy real fries and onion rings. Italian steak, pork tenderloins, burgers.... Mmm Mmm. Best ice cream shakes ever... No really. Not the modern stuff, the old time ones that are solid but melt cream in the edges. I wish they had more flavors, but this will do. Burgers wrapped in foil. There's just something about that. Ample parking here. Old style but clean inside. Very friendly staff will help on your order. Go out of your way to come here. You'll be so glad. read more

This was my best experience there every. I went through the drive Thur at 9:20 Friday evening. I ordered a Jr double cheeseburger with mustard only and a small order of onion rings. I watched the girl bag my food and as she was bagging my onion rings, I thought to myself, " That's alot of onion rings for a small order.". Then she brought the bag of food to me at the window and said" I put in all the rings they gave me." Wow, what a surprise, more than a large order was in the bag along with 2 Jr double cheeseburgers. I paid $7.87 for all that food. It was like I got 2 cheeseburgers and 2 orders of onion rings. Believe it or not I ate it all and loved every bite. It was my lucky day at Big Boy Burgers. read more

Okay, so it's time to come back and write an updated review now that I've visited this place several times. I've picked up on who my favorite employees are and who will give me the best service experience. Let me just say this, the food is still good, except some of the staff need serious attitude adjustments. There was one instance where a young lady was arguing with the cook in front of customers. Talk about uncomfortable and awkward. A few days ago when I visited through the drive through, I almost left with a free meal because, they didn't have their act together. I don't know what type of service I'll get in here now. Every visit is a hit or miss and my visit this week was definitely a miss. read more

We just happened to be nearby so we thought that we'd stop. I'm so glad that we did. We came in right at closing. Actually, I think technically, it was already closed but the door was still open and the open sign was lit up so we went in. They were very pleasant. We kept asking questions about the menu & they had no problem with answering all of them. We got burgers, tots, fries & onion rings. They all were pretty good. The kids raved about the cheese sauce & the fries. Let me say though, the star for me was the limeade. I found myself disappointed when I hit the bottom of my cup. It had a great balance of flavors. I've found myself thinking about it since last night & trying to make up an excuse to drive back there to get another. read more

Very inconsistent! Mediocre service. Great ideas of food but every I go (5+ times in a ten year period) I have problems with the order and it wasn't made like they portray. I always regret giving them another chance. read more

When I was a kid I used to love and I mean LOVE this place, but what a difference some years make. The workers were nice and are NOT to Blair for the low rating. This low rating is strictly because of the food quality. My family has been eating here all my life! Huge, thin & crispy pork tenderloin sandwich! Monster sized double cheeseburgers! Super crispy tast tots! And creamy, delicious cyclones made with vanilla soft serve & your fave candy bars crushed up & mixed in! I like Heath or Butterfingers! Plus so many more old school, fast food options on the menu! Maybe not the best of anything individually if i'm totally honest. But overall it's so very good for fast food that we keep going back & always will! And the family that owns this location is so very nice! So is their staff! Similar to Big Boys but better! So go there, NOW! read more

Honestly big boys is pretty gross absolutely worst burger place around especially with prices like that

Tasty seared burgers, tenderloins are fantastic Good fries and onion rings. Always satisfied with quality of food and service.

Italian steaks are the best thing in the world. My favorite part is the sauce on it and the portion. Finish off with the cherry mash milk shake. It's the best place for lunch. Even the kids meals are great especially since you get a free cone with it. Been eating here since I was a little kid and now I can my little kid here read more

Big Boy is one of only two places that has onion rings that I would eat EVERY DAY, if I didn't mind perpetual onion breath and was willing to weigh 250 pounds. As it is, I have to ration the number of times I can visit here to about once a month. When I make my monthly pilgrimage, I enjoy three different sandwiches in rotation: The cheeseburger, the tenderloin and the steak sandwich are all good solid fast-food renditions of the genre. But no matter which sandwich I order, I get the onion rings to go with it and a diet coke (I save my calories when I can and don't feel so guilty about eating the rings). read more

Big Boy is a lesser known challenger to Westport Flea Market's claim to the "best burger in KC" crown. There's nothing fancy about them, but they taste the way a burger should. I recently moved to Independence and Big Boy was one of the places my new neighbors had said was a must try. I read the reviews and decided that the next time I was in the mood for a good old burger, I'd go to Big Burger. I couldn't have been more disappointed! It was around 7, after the dinner rush. I ordered the 1/4 BB- no lettuce, tomato or mayo, a large onion ring and a pineapple shake. I received a cold burger, cold greasy onion rings and a runny shake. I asked for a fresh burger and rings and explained that my food was cold. While the gal was apologetic and said "of course!", I received another cold burger and a slightly warmer bag of rings (half of which was batter-only chunks). The pineapple shake was yummy but certainly not the good old fashioned milk shake that you would expect from a place like this, and not really worth the full star that I was forced to rate to write this review. read more

Just went through the drive thru and while waiting for food, watched the entire staff goofing off, eating food out of the fryer, some had their masks down under their chins...just overall unappealing and they seemed oblivious to the fact that even though the dining room is closed, their behavior is on full display for everyone at the pick up window. read more

Good old fashion burger, slapped with good old fashion service and a smile. If America was a restaurant, this place would be on inside cover holding a torch of freedom. Good, old-fashioned, American fast food. So you want those home made onion rings? Don't want those skimpy little amounts other places give you? Order a LARGE ring here, and you may not be able to finish the pile they lay on you here. And they are EXCELLENT. Burgers, tenderloins, chicken, tater tots, all good and NOT fat free! I think that is what makes them so GREAT. Forget the low-fat diet every now and again and trip into the Big Boy, one of the last true fast food joints in the city. A piece of history, that tastes oh so good. read more
