Signs stand the test of time

Patina Classic car collectors highly value the original unrestored example of a rare find still covered with the patina of time. Maid Rite in Lexington fits that bill to a T. Its history is written on the uneven pavement of the parking lot, the weathered paint on the building and signs, and the below market prices on the drive in menu. I still remember slipping away from my room at the now abandoned Wentworth Military Academy for the coveted Maid Rite and coke that consumed my weekly allowance - rather than dining in the school "mess hall" with the other cadets. So on the occasion of that schools closing it was only fitting to have one more loose meat burger. Just like that rare barn find classic car, there is little evidence of cosmetic polish or maintenance. Only the scared skin of a true survivor. Pulling into a drive in slot there outside your window is a lighted menu with a speaker and a brass button highly polished with years of thumbing. Your order goes in today just like it did in 1965, and is delivered by a car hop, just like in 1965. With Maid Rite burgers and even tenderloin sandwiches priced at $2.55, your light lunch still comes in at under $5.00 including tip. Their signature Maid Rite "loose meat" burger has their perfect mix of grilled onions and time worn grill you can only find at a true hamburger stand. Similar to Nu Way or Mugs Up "Whiz" burgers, but better (maybe because of patina). American Mid-Century at its best! Maid Rite is a Must Stop any time "old 24" takes you through Lexington. You will not be disappointed - the good old days were really that good!

I am from California, and have always been curious about loose meat sandwiches since I've learned about them from watching the old 90s sitcom, Roseanne. I was very surprised when I arrived at this Maid Rite - it looks a little run down, but that's because it's a historic drive-in that was established in 1946. It's a tiny shack, so we ended up ordering from our car instead of going inside. We ordered 2 Cheese-rites with American cheese, tater tots and fries. The sides are a lot smaller than I'm used to in terms of portions, and I wish I got a second sandwich because it was pretty small, too. Despite the portion size (as compared to the glossy photos on their corporate website), the food was delicious, the meat was very moist and tasty. If you like ketchup, as for a tub instead of those to-go packets. It makes it so much easier. I wish they opened a Maid-Rite in Northern California!

The staff is very friendly. And they were very busy! So you do have to wait a bit for your order. I like the food. Tate's like it did when I was little.

A great old fashioned eating experience. Drive up service just like the olden days and loose meat hamburgers

The place has a old time feel to it. The food is very good and fast and different from the o so common fast food joints in town.

The loose meat burgers are great and their crinkle cut fries are the best!
