Just like the original from the 1970s. The Bucaroo basket will fill you up and make you feel like you're eating at Texas Tom's in 1977.

They gave me a free burger when I opened their app, but the catch was I had to buy a medium fries and a medium drink to get it. I did, but the fries were cold and tasteless, and the burger wasn't anything special, either. The price for the two items was as much as I would've paid for just the burger, which was all I really wanted anyway. I ignored their other specials, since I definitely didn't want to buy another medium fries again. (I usually look for healthier options.) But today they offered BOGO chicken wings, and their wings were 9 pieces as opposed to the 6 or 8 most places offer, so I got suckered in again. I asked for 2 orders of plain wings with honey-mustard dipping sauce, which came to $11.59. But I didn't get wings. The dinky things I got were BONELESS wings, which - let's face it - are really just chicken nuggets. When I got home I saw they'd only given me one order of plain wings. The other was soaked in a spicy orange sauce, which I definitely didn't ask for. Spicy things blister my mouth, so they were wasted. And they only gave me a single dipping sauce with two orders of wings. Absolutely not going back.

Hi-Boy is a small burger spot with no seating inside and NO DRIVE THRU, which I find charming. It harkens back to the 50s when it was first opened and even has a neon sign that looks great at night. But the whole visit here was about the burger, and while they don't have bacon here, the burger was cooked to perfection. With just a bit of char around the edges for a crunch and a flavorful and juicy middle of the patty would've been enough to get a great review. But Hi-Boy also makes an AMAZING French fry that I couldn't get enough of. This spot is a very long drive from my house, but that's not going to stop me from visiting again and again. An inside walk up counter without any seating on the premises, is one of the reasons my visits have been infrequent over the past 35 years. I usually head to one of their two other locations now so I don't have to eat in my vehicle. This past Saturday i did stop in and order a tenderloin, since i am in the middle of "Ralphie's Tenderloin Tour" with 12 tenderloins under my belt (figuratively and literally) in the past month. Unfortunately their breaded pork tenderloin is mass produced and frozen, so it did not make it close to the top tier in my rankings, but for what it is ...it ain't bad. I did like that they put plenty of veggie toppings and their burger sauce on it for maximum taste. I'll probably stick with the burgers on all future visits. 3.5 stars for the tendy... 5 stars for the burgers, rings, cyclones, variety and value of the menu, and of course the decades of nostalgia and fond memories.

This location was in a strip mall with a parking lot. It's exactly what you would expect of an old school barbecue joint. It gives a little bit of a diner feel meets cafeteria. You order your food at the counter and pay. Your order is given to you on a tray and then you go and find a seat. There is a waitress there to take drink orders and anything else you might need. The waitress was very kind and hospitable. I ordered the barbecue chicken and you get to choose from different types of sauces. I had the sweet barbecue sauce and for my sides I had coleslaw and potato salad. The starting portions for the sides are really small, but the protein portions are quite large. I really enjoyed my potato salad and coleslaw. If I wasn't staying at a hotel, I would have ordered more to go. The chicken I had was juicy and well seasoned. It was a little on the saltier side than I would've liked, but once I added the sweet barbecue sauce, it helped to balance out the flavor. You were really able to taste the smokiness of the meat and you can't leave there without the smoky scent getting into your clothing. You really felt like you were at a barbecue.

The gal working the counter (yelling) would only let me order what was on the board. I wanted to taste the burnt ends, brisket, sausage, and chicken or turkey. Oh well.. they wouldn't do that. I ended up ordering the burnt end sandwich and discarding the large bun. Pretty good rating on the burnt ends. Tasty. I then had to order the sliced beef sandwich - and discarded the bun again. The beef didn't seem to have any smoke. 2.5* rating. Neat bbq location off of downtown. OK experience with the meat. I now understand yelling at the customers for their orders is their thing. Fine. Didn't work for me.

But if you're hungry, its late at night, and you love a good value, there is nothing better than Texas Toms. Everything is cooked to order, so its a bit of a wait, but that means all this delicious fried food is perfectly hot. Oh yeah, and when they say "12 minutes", they mean 12 minutes exactly. THAT to me is better than a cute and courteous staff who hands you old food. Basically, if you spend $5 on anything, your average person will be stuffed. If you spend 8-9 and eat it all, you better be on your cheat day of some crazy exercise routine. You can get delicious catfish, burgers, tacos, buritos, chicken wings (get the whole wings, TRUST ME. Each one equals two "regular" wings (a flat and a drum) plus the tip which is just extra crispy goodness.) I also recommend the spicy chicken sandwiches, the pork tenderloin sandwiches, and their onion rings are great as well. Skip the fast food if you're near Texas Toms, you won't regret it.

There are several Texas Toms locations to visit throughout the Kansas City area, and this is one you should skip. I ordered the pork tenderloin combo with mozzarella sticks and a pink lemonade. The guy taking our order was not friendly and the lobby to wait for the order was cold. As such, we sat in the car to wait. When the order was ready, I immediately took a bite of the mozzarella stick, no cheese pull! It was just up and stuck, eeeyuck! The tenderloin sandwich was thrown together, greasy, refried - completely underwhelming. When I requested fresh mozzarella sticks, the attendant insisted they were and after about five minutes, took them back and very likely gave me the same ones... you've guessed it, refried. This incident comes after having placed virtually the same order from the Linwood location. The mozzi sticks were hot and fresh, insane cheese pull, a real treat! The tenderloin sandwich was fresh, good portions, hot with soft bread - along with a pleasant customer service experience. This review is for my extra people who will drive the distance to ensure good food and good service. While this location is closer, I will be returning to the Linwood location which surprisingly has a lower rating. It will give me an opportunity to see the consistency. Please let me know in the comments if I should check out other locations!!
