Thats not steak.
MB W.

I remember this establishment from years ago having way better food. Obviously it has exchanged hands a few times since then because the food was not good at all. And for the price you would expect quality. Was that even steak? I don't think so. I do not recommend. However, the staff was polite so they get two stars.

There isn't a great variety of restaurants that offer cheesesteaks in KC, so Chartroose Caboose is one of the few choices available to get your fix. Maybe if we had more competition in town, Chartroose Caboose would be motivated to provide a better than average product. Unfortunately, there isn't anything special about their offerings. The cheesesteaks are the featured menu item, and they're just OK. The meat is very dry, not really any better than steak-umms that you could cook at home. They could easily offer additional options, such as an Italian Beef sandwich, or a combo with sausage, but they don't. Swing and a miss. The menu includes a few additional burgers and sandwiches, and I recently tried the "hand breaded" pork tenderloin. They may be hand breaded, but if so, they are then frozen and subsequently pulled from the freezer when you order to throw into the fryer. In other words, they aren't made fresh. Another swing and a miss. The tenderloins extend about an inch out from the bun, but they aren't pounded thin like many KC restaurants, and the result is approximately ¼ inch thick with a medium thin breading coating. I can understand how you can get away with a subpar cheesesteak in KC because we're so far from Philadelphia and few people here really know what it should taste like. But an average pork tenderloin in KC is harder to tolerate. The fries are thicker than McDonald's style, but thinner than steak fries, with typical frozen out of a bag fry flavor. They should probably offer some sort of fry seasoning near the topping bar. You'll find both a soda fountain with a few choices of drinks near the condiment bar, plus a cooler with a variety of Fritz's and other brands of bottled drinks and water in a cooler located by the ordering counter. A few arcade size video game machines are somewhat hidden in the back, and they have a couple nice flat screen TVs mounted in the dining area that were showing sports on my recent visits. They have a condiment bar with pickles, onions, cherry peppers, sliced pepperocinis, lettuce, and tomato - but you still have to go to the ordering counter to request ketchup, mustard, or mayo. Why? These are staple items that should be placed front and center on the condiment bar. I also didn't see any cheez-wiz. How can you call yourself a cheesesteak restaurant and not offer cheez-wiz? Maybe they offer it, but if so, then you must have to ask for it the same way you have to ask for ketchup, mustard and mayo, because it certainly isn't obviously available and they never mentioned it when I was ordering. Another swing and a miss for strike three, and we haven't ever gotten to the problem I experienced with my delivery order. I tried Chartroose Caboose's delivery service a few weeks ago and they didn't get my order quite right. My "Zephyr" cheesesteak arrived without mushrooms, and the delivery person told me they had run out. Ever heard of a grocery store? It's really not that hard to run down the street and purchase more mushrooms if you happen to run out. I mean, seriously. I also specifically requested two containers of au jus when I placed the order, but upon inspection discovered they only delivered one. I can say one good thing about this all-round very average restaurant, or at least something good about the restaurant's location - As you exit the building when you're done eating, you can turn left and walk 30 feet down the sidewalk to Peachwave frozen yogurt to order some cheap and delicious dessert.

Great place to grab a bite. We came in with a large order for 6 people and had our food within 15-20 minutes. You walk into a cute little restaurant that has train decor. Above there's a small train riding the tracks all around the perimeter of the place. At the counter they gave their menu, along with an open kitchen where you can see them cooking your food and frying your fries. The food itself was pretty great. The bread was a white bread that was extremely soft with food flavor. The meat was perfect, tender and juicy. I went with the Katy because it was extra cheese, no veggie. They topped it with extra mozzarella cheese which gave it all the more flavor. I ordered a side of tuxedo fries, which were pretty good- a little soggy since we took the food to go. The mozzarella sticks were perfectly cooked as well. Again, great place to grab a bite. Try it out!

Box sizes and to-go orders don't really have a good presentation or fit with the amount of food you normally get while dining in at the restaurant. But Burg and Barrel has it down. Everything travels very well. And they are good at ensuring they have the right boxes for the right items. Venting in place to keep the fries (or tots) from steaming up and getting soggy. Boxes that are big enough for the full sandwich and a full order of fries. Snagged a beer while I waited and didn't even make it all the way through before the bartender showed up with our to-go order. Then speaking of Ambiance... we got to sit in my awesome living room and wolf down burgers and a steak salad while watching the movie of choice for the night. I ALWAYS get their amazing tots that are perfectly seasoned and crispy, but my coworkers upgraded to the massive onion rings. Between the large 1/2lb burger (cooked perfectly!) and sides none of us could completely finish our plates! I have never had a bad dish at either location. Our server, Chastity, was super nice and helpful and explained everything for the first timers in our group. She and Hailey do a great job and we are looking forward to trying another special! Next time I will take pictures before inhaling the top notch food! The only downside is the place is noisy, since the ceiling is wide open. Not a deal breaker for me or our group, but I could see it bothering someone more picky. Thank you!

Unfortunately, the service side fell flat. We arrived mid-afternoon around 1:30-2:00, and the restaurant wasn't busy. We asked if we could sit upstairs, and the host seemed confused before telling us it was closed, then seated us directly next to a loud group despite plenty of quieter open tables nearby. A few minutes later, we looked upstairs ourselves and saw multiple occupied tables being actively served...what the heck? The most frustrating part of this experience wasn't the seating, it was the complete indifference from the staff. Drinks didn't arrive until after we had already finished eating, and despite the restaurant being relatively slow, nobody seemed remotely concerned. No urgency or communication. Just a normal day for them, I guess. A kitchen can only carry a restaurant so far when the front-of-house operates with this little care for hospitality. The atmosphere gives the impression of a place that wants to feel polished and upscale, but the service felt lazy and disconnected from the guest experience. Mistakes happen in restaurants. What matters is whether the staff notices and cares enough to fix them. We left wondering how a restaurant with food this solid has become comfortable delivering service this poor.

Tater kegs were good, taste and size-wise. But we wound up hardly eating much of the fried pickles. They were drowned in salt, so much so even the ranch couldn't compensate or cover it up. My wife got the unlimited wings. She tried three different flavor of wings, all very salty to the taste. Sweet Chili, the Popping Pineapple and the Teriyaki. And the teriyaki really didn't taste like teriyaki at all. My daughter had the veggie burger, and she said it was very salty. I ordered the deviled eggs and the jalapeno creamed corn. The deviled eggs were good; filling was a little runnier than I usually like in a deviled egg. The jalapeno creamed corn had some good spice, but another dish that had entirely too much salt in it. When my wife and first got there to get the table for our party, the host asked if we had the app. We did not, he instructed us how to download it, and told us we'd be getting an email for a free burger. He also told us about the 20% off "Vintage" discount for seniors, of which I am one. At the end of our meal, the server (who was really cool, by the way) gave us our bill, which totalled with tax $165 plus some change. I told him I was a senior and wanted the vintage discount. He brought in iPad over, entered a couple things and brought us a new bill. I glanced at it and it said $163 and some change. So I walked after him and asked him if I paid up front and that's where they gave the discount. He said no you pay me and I did give you the discount. Sure enough, on the receipt, it was saying vintage discount......$2.60. Now I use math in my head every day for work as an air traffic controller, so it didn't take me long to figure out $2.60 is WAY BELOW 20% off of $165. I was looking for some fine print somewhere that might explain this particular math conundrum. Couldn't find anything. I was going to find our server or a manager, but the family was ready to go, and since it was a birthday my wife didn't want me to make an issue of it, so we left. Not happy with the liberal usage of salt in everything, and with today's prices, especially not happy with the issue with the discount that was about 18% short. Probably won't be back.
