This is a greasy sandwich that passes for a philly cheese steak in Kansas. I have had better philly cheese steaks. Given the better cheese steaks I have had were on the East Coast. No one just really eat a Philly Cheese Steak in Kansas if they have eaten one on the East Coast. Husband likes the Zephyr. I don't really like anything here. You pick the sandwich up and grease dips off and fills your cardboard holder with enough grease to fry the french fries. The fries are ok, usually a little cold, but the are the skin on kind which I like. The train that runs around the top of the place is cute, but cute doesn't taste good. The tables have always been dirty when I have gone in and the condiment area doesn't have a sneeze guard which is just gross. read more

I have to say that I was not blown away by CC. It was an experience that I could have taken or left. The store was one that definitely had seen better days. It was a lot more "moms and pops" than I had expected. The neon sign was buzzing and the TV was fuzzy... They have a video game room with lots of "vintage" video games. I ordered the Chief Philly Cheese Steak. I got jalapenos added to it at no charge. I got the combo with fries and large soda for $10. The fries were good and the sandwich was lackluster. It seemed under seasoned and didn't have much cheese on it. So far this really is a two star review, but I think that the service was outstanding (for a counter service restaurant). They honored a coupon from another CC location and were very helpful with my decision making. When I asked for jalapenos the sandwich was almost completely prepared and they didn't bat an eye. My friend Melissa wanted to grab lunch here one day and since the only thing I like about Philly Cheesesteak is the cheese and steak, I said "why not"? It was super rainy and like three in the afternoon so we were the only ones there. I ordered the turkey cheeseteak sans onion and peppers and fries. There is a cooler of bottled beer. We tried this place out because they advertised rice bowls, and my wife and I love rice bowls. Well, they barely had rice bowls. The portions were small, though the food tasted ok. Our biggest issue was the large amount of work it took to order the food. The cashier was somewhat incompetent and the cook had to come up and help her complete our order. Then the cook didn't understand what we wanted. We had to repeat ourselves at least four times. Don't get me wrong, they were nice, but it took about 15 minutes just to order the food. read more

I definitely prefer this location to the one on Metcalf. This location isn't as crowded. Excellent food and service. Considering the food quality, their food is fairly reasonable. Pre/Over-cooked meat reheated on the grill with some au jus. I've had good Phillies elsewhere and this isn't it. It's super salted to the point where it's nearly inedible. I have always liked Chartroose Caboose, but now that I don't live in the neighborhood I don't make it often. When I first pulled in it was a tough choice with the Ethiopian restaurant right next door, but I was in the mood for a Philly. I am not a huge green pepper fan. I also do not like a lot of onions and really only like the flavor so only want them cooked into things. So why would I go for a Philly? I like a good beef sandwich! I always order mine with mushrooms and cheese, sometimes getting a side of au jus. The sandwiches are prepared as you order so always fresh. Fries and onion rings are pretty much cooked to order also. This can cause some traffic jams with the drink station and condiments right behind where you order and pick up food. The beef is always tender. Cooked on the grill with the au jus makes it nice and moist. The bun is toasted and lined with cheese to melt when the beef is added. If you have mushrooms, peppers, or onions, they are mixed into the beef on the grill before being added to the bun. I have always thought the mushrooms were a little stingy, but the overall sandwich is solid. They have cut back on the salt in the au jus. This is a plus as the sandwich used to be a touch too salty. It isn't the best beef sandwich you will find, but they are good and consistent. One of the few Philly places in town, but no Whiz for true Philly lovers. read more

Went in Saturday at 12:30 for lunch and the place was a ghost town. Not a good omen. My friend and I both had Philly Cheese Steaks. It wasn't awful, but it definitely wasn't good, lacking any spice or flavor. The onion portion of the onion rings was way too thick. You couldn't just bite through them with your teeth. The fries were awful. Probably the worst fries I've had in a long time. Super soggy. Yuck. The fresh lemonade they had was good, for what that's worth. Service was friendly with average weight times. The facility has a railroad theme, although not nearly as cool as somewhere like Fritz's. The worst part was that a combo meal was almost $13. Really bad value. Big fan of cheesesteaks and this place could be a lot better. Service has always been good over the years but the sandwiches have never rose above ok. Not bad, just ok. My biggest problem w/ their steaks is that they are very salty to the point where every bite is overshadowed by the clear taste of salt. Next, the rolls are just ok. Philly steaks depend on the roll being as dynamic as the other ingredients. Nothing about the rolls here speak beyond average. They taste like you can find them on the shelf at the supermarket. I wish I could give this establishment 5 stars. The sandwiches are awesome!!! The sides are great too, provided they are not rushed (under cooked) or forgotten (over cooked). In short the service could be more consistent and certainly more friendly. Specifically, about every other time we visit this establishment, the First-In-First-Out service falls apart and we wind up having to wait on something to complete our order even though we see that particular side item or sandwich getting served to other patrons that were in line behind us. More specifically, there is one older lady you works there that should probably find a different job as she clearly is not happy working there with her eye-rolls, deep-sighs, and pretty much constant look of being overwhelmed on her face. She really should not be allowed to address any customer service issues as most of them obviously stem from her when she is there if you just stand there and watch the operation. Furthermore, we particularly find it annoying enough to have to repeat our order multiple times because we get interrupted by her yelling/repeating the order as we try to specify it, let alone when we get an eye-roll and a sigh when we specify an upgrade for sweet potato fries. Unfortunately, she makes us feel like walking out when we get there and see her working and we are confident that most who frequent the place like we do know who we are talking about. Update - Visited establishment again today but same employee still hasn't "moved on" yet, even though she is obviously miserable based on her very animated facial expressions and eye rolls as she takes your order and does things. So far the only things I have fond I don't care for are the pork tenderloin and the cookies. The cookies aren't that bad just kinda flat. The pork tenderloin sandwich is simply bad. With that said their cheesesteaks are not the best in the world however there are not many places that have cheesesteak so by comparison they are very good. Their burger are great simple bier with or without cheese and you dress it the way you want it. The onion rings are great but you don't get a lot. The fries are good but, could be cooked about thirty seconds longer so the are crispy. We don't eat here often not really sure why though. read more

Don't let the negative reviews keep you away! My son and I stopped in for a quick Sunday lunch and it was great. I had the Zephyr (beef, onion, mushrooms, Swiss) and he had the Pennsylvanian (beef, onion, Swiss). Both sandwiches were made to order... beef was fresh and juicy, buns were fresh and soft. They've got a small condiment and veggie bar so you can further customize your Philly. We split an order of skin-on fries... and my son gobbled them up. This place has changed a lot in the last 5 years. They have always been a bit overpriced for what you get but it use to be the only game in town for a semi-decent Steak and Cheese Philly. The fried food here has always been sub-par and the subs always seem small and filled with more filling stuff than meat and never enough cheese. The restaurant itself isn't horrible, cute train(when it's running), plenty of booths(even though a lot of them have holes in them) and a couple of throwback video games(that are half working). But again, only game in town you kinda have to deal with it! Recently they jacked up the prices to compete with the new Pepper Jax Grill (Pflumm and Shawnee Mission 3 miles away). The problem with that is simple, you cant just raise your prices and serve the same mediocre food and expect people to deal with it. A family of four ordering 4 combo meals for take out fast food shouldn't cost $50!! Simply put Pepper Jax Grill makes a way better Philly than Chartreuse Caboose and at a very comparable price! read more

I am surprised that with how often I have been coming to KC I have yet to eat here. I had the Zephyr which is a cheese-steak with cheese, onions, and mushrooms. I really liked the bread - crispy on the outside chewy on the inside. This was definitely not a neat sandwich to eat but is worth every drip. I popped in recently for a couple of sandwiches to go using my Pricechopper coupon. I'm not sure what they've changed, but these were the worst cheesesteaks ever! I think they have changed their meat sourcing. I bought a chicken and beef Super Chief and both appeared to have been made with processed meats (as oppposed to chopped up chicken breast and chopped steak as in the past). IMO the quality has dropped through the floor. (I don't know if this also applies to the Metcalf location as well.) read more

I was so unfortunately disappointed! When I'm spending $60 + for 2 adult sandwiches and 4 kids meals I expect to somewhat enjoy it! So much went wrong with this order. I was thrilled about the delivery option until it took 1 hr 45 min to get to my house (quoted 45-60 min). As you can guess our food had been setting for quite a bit of time! The fries were so stale and soggy they were sticking together in one large clump, the bread from the philly sandwiches fell right out on the bottom from getting so soggy. I ordered a rice bowl and some mozzarella sticks. The bowl came loaded with a half pound of mushrooms which I absolutely can't stand along with brown rice when I asked for white. Without the sour cream and tiger sauce, this would've had zero taste. On top of all that, the mozzarella sticks were burnt. I'm still hungry but don't want to spend anymore on lunch today. What a complete joke. I want my money back. It's been a long time since I've been this pissed off about a meal that I felt the need to write about it. they have online ordering through beyond menu and they have the menu all wrong. With the tenderloin the menu says fresh hand battered and they pull mine from the freezer and tossed it in the fryer. The Lenexa, Ks store hadn't recieved my order when I got there so I had to try to remember what my friend had ordered on hers. The phily steak she ordered was way over salted and because they didn't receive the order from Beyond Menu it was not how she wanted it. I would absolutely not go there again. read more

Just went to Chartroose Caboose was a 1st time customer was very very satisfied i was greeted the minute i came in the door with a hello and and a welcome they lady at the register was Very helpful she told me about all my options all the way from toppings to the size of sandwiches and the many options and side's available i had a Rock Island with AMAZING onion rings and a side salad very fresh and delicious cant wait to bring my family and friends back .... We had a very bad experience with Chartroose Caboose. A large order was put in online for our office, and we experienced problems from the beginning. Firstly, one of the locations listed online would not allow for online ordering for an unknown reason, so we had to pick the other location that happened to be a few minutes further away. After the order was placed, it took over an hour to get delivered. We called the store and asked about our order, and they said it was already out for delivery. After waiting over 30 minutes, when it should have taken 10 minutes, we called the store again. The Chartroose Caboose was rude and did not provide any answers as to where our food was. Once the food did come over an hour after it was placed, it was not hot, and multiple orders were wrong or missing. We will most definitively not be ordering from the Chartroose Caboose again. read more

Never, ever will I go to the Lenexa Chartroose Caboose again. Since they misunderstood my order the last time I was there, I had neatly written my order on paper and handed it to the woman behind the counter. Well my order came out and I was told it was ready. I checked and it was missing one sandwich. I called her back to the counter and explained that she forgot one sandwich. She told me that I only ordered two sandwiches. So, I rifled through the garbage and found my order. I handed it to her and she said "oh, I forgot a sandwich." She and another worker just looked at me like a deer in the headlights. I had to ask them to make my sandwich. They just stared. Well, I then waited another ten minutes and was charged for the third sandwich. When I got home, I realized they over-charged me by $7.00. Unfortunately I went into the 87th St location in Lenexa, KS a few months back- once, the food was not prepared the same as any other CC I have been to and they were snotty about it when I said something. Took my mom there on 12/23/14 walked in they were mopping the floors looked clean. The woman greeted us warmly and said she'll be right with us. We told her to take her time as we've only eaten there once before and needed time to look over our options. As she rounded the counter I see a cockroach running across the counter and parked itself between the empty tip jar and the cash register. My mom immediately walked out while I waited for her to arrive to tell her they had roaches. She didn't even looked shocked. She just made the poor mexican lady who was cooking come from the kitchen to kill it. As I'm walking out 3 more come scurrying in all from directions. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
