    Thats not steak.
    MB W.

I remember this establishment from years ago having way better food. Obviously it has exchanged hands a few times since then because the food was not good at all. And for the price you would expect quality. Was that even steak? I don't think so. I do not recommend. However, the staff was polite so they get two stars.

There isn't a great variety of restaurants that offer cheesesteaks in KC, so Chartroose Caboose is one of the few choices available to get your fix. Maybe if we had more competition in town, Chartroose Caboose would be motivated to provide a better than average product. Unfortunately, there isn't anything special about their offerings. The cheesesteaks are the featured menu item, and they're just OK. The meat is very dry, not really any better than steak-umms that you could cook at home. They could easily offer additional options, such as an Italian Beef sandwich, or a combo with sausage, but they don't. Swing and a miss. The menu includes a few additional burgers and sandwiches, and I recently tried the "hand breaded" pork tenderloin. They may be hand breaded, but if so, they are then frozen and subsequently pulled from the freezer when you order to throw into the fryer. In other words, they aren't made fresh. Another swing and a miss. The tenderloins extend about an inch out from the bun, but they aren't pounded thin like many KC restaurants, and the result is approximately ¼ inch thick with a medium thin breading coating. I can understand how you can get away with a subpar cheesesteak in KC because we're so far from Philadelphia and few people here really know what it should taste like. But an average pork tenderloin in KC is harder to tolerate. The fries are thicker than McDonald's style, but thinner than steak fries, with typical frozen out of a bag fry flavor. They should probably offer some sort of fry seasoning near the topping bar. You'll find both a soda fountain with a few choices of drinks near the condiment bar, plus a cooler with a variety of Fritz's and other brands of bottled drinks and water in a cooler located by the ordering counter. A few arcade size video game machines are somewhat hidden in the back, and they have a couple nice flat screen TVs mounted in the dining area that were showing sports on my recent visits. They have a condiment bar with pickles, onions, cherry peppers, sliced pepperocinis, lettuce, and tomato - but you still have to go to the ordering counter to request ketchup, mustard, or mayo. Why? These are staple items that should be placed front and center on the condiment bar. I also didn't see any cheez-wiz. How can you call yourself a cheesesteak restaurant and not offer cheez-wiz? Maybe they offer it, but if so, then you must have to ask for it the same way you have to ask for ketchup, mustard and mayo, because it certainly isn't obviously available and they never mentioned it when I was ordering. Another swing and a miss for strike three, and we haven't ever gotten to the problem I experienced with my delivery order. I tried Chartroose Caboose's delivery service a few weeks ago and they didn't get my order quite right. My "Zephyr" cheesesteak arrived without mushrooms, and the delivery person told me they had run out. Ever heard of a grocery store? It's really not that hard to run down the street and purchase more mushrooms if you happen to run out. I mean, seriously. I also specifically requested two containers of au jus when I placed the order, but upon inspection discovered they only delivered one. I can say one good thing about this all-round very average restaurant, or at least something good about the restaurant's location - As you exit the building when you're done eating, you can turn left and walk 30 feet down the sidewalk to Peachwave frozen yogurt to order some cheap and delicious dessert.

We decided to have an early dinner so we were there at like 4:30 and the only customers. You can pick where you sit and they also have outdoor seating with little spring horses for kids to ride on. Waitress took our order and food came out pretty quick. Mozzarella sticks were standard, nothing too special or remarkable. Now the pizza slice, I tried the KC Hunna BBQ which is their bbq Hawaiian pizza and let me tell you, it was huge! I saved room so I was able to eat the whole slice but don't be afraid to have leftovers. It's a thin crust because it's NY style but it doesn't come out burnt, just a little crisp. So much flavor and plenty of meat, I also choose no jalapeños since I'm not a fan. I also tried a tater tot and those are well seasoned so I'd also expect their fries to be seasoned as well. The only issue I had was it being quite warm, but for an open kitchen and the heat index being 115, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I will definitely be back to try more pizza, and I'll make good use of their big parking lot and bring some friends!

But they don't just do pizza, there is an array of sandwiches, burgers, and of course their famous wings (beware of the Death Wings, like, REALLY beware). The kitchen is pretty much right in front of you and pies are getting slung constantly. That Rockin' Red sauce has that rich tomato base and it goes perfectly with that toasted crust flavor that only a pizza oven can provide. Toppings are seemingly anything (I'm a sucker for fresh mozz & meatballs) and while one slice is enough for many, two is just a sweeter spot. Beer on tap flows with local, regional, & known brands. The drink menu is pretty lengthy and beers will rotate with the seasons. If you're unsure on what you want, then your friendly server is very likely going to give you some good options. The whole place seems to be held together by stickers & customer 'art', so it gives Grinders a divey atmosphere but delivers a five-star product. Parking is Crossroads, pricing is reasonable but the value is far more than the price point(s), and there's a reason this place gets national exposure. It's that good. And if weather allows, then eat out back. Underrated KC patio.

Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and our food came out quickly. I ordered a turkey club while my dad got one as well, and unfortunately we both had the same issue. The turkey was on the dry side, and it was sliced much thicker than I personally prefer. I tend to like a thinner deli-style sliced turkey, so it just wasn't my favorite sandwich. My mom ordered one of the salads though, and honestly it looked better than my sandwich. It was loaded with fresh toppings, and she said the ranch was excellent. If I come back, I'd probably skip the sandwich altogether and give one of the salads a try. Overall, I can definitely appreciate what they're going for. The prices are fantastic, honestly unheard of in present day, and that's the main reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3. It took one of us yelling "hello" to get someone's attention, and even then it took them awhile to come out and acknowledge us. After someone finally came to the register, the guy said absolutely nothing. Just stared at us like we had some nerve to bother him at his place of work. I was a little unnerved, but said "hi! I'm just picking up a to-go order". Still saying nothing, he looked at me, looked at the pickup orders, and handed me my bag without a word. The first employee who was on the grill asked what we wanted for sandwiches and that was the end of the conversation. Another staff member came over to help her but also didn't say a word. A third employee was making fries for a takeout order and was also not engaging. We wanted fries in addition to our sandwiches but were never asked during the entire time our sandwiches were being made. So by the time they were done and we made it to the counter, we told them we also wanted fries and the irritation and eye rolling was felt. Honestly, that's their problem because had they asked when they were getting the sandwich order, those could have been done and ready to go. Definitely an efficiency and training issue that management needs to address. And maybe get some new employees without the attitude. The food itself was good. Since the fries were fresh they were super hot and crispy. My cheesesteak was large and delicious. I like just mushrooms and cheese because I'm five but they also have peppers and onions and all the things. The bread they use is so good. Nice and fluffy and holds everything together perfectly. Overall, the food is good but the staff isn't the greatest so if you can deal with that, you'll be in good shape. Otherwise, Chartroose Caboose isn't too far away.
