Very excited to have been able to try corkscrew as I had been following them on social media and seeing all the work they have put in to making the space great. The vibe here is definitely elevated cocktail lounge with small bites. They are opened starting Thursdays - Sundays and have a good range of hours on those days. Though parking in the front may be limited the area offers a great amount of street parking with no issues. Upon entry to the restaurant we were seated and brought a menu. The menu has a lot of great drink options available and though the menu is not extensive (as it is tapas style) what is on the menu is tasty! We had the eggrolls, the shrimp and the fries basket which all had great flavor. I specifically loved the eggrolls. The curry was different but delicious. For drinks I tried the white sangria which was so good and my boyfriend had one of the cocktails which he enjoyed as well. We went on a Saturday which had the live band which was a lot of fun to jam out too. It really added a lot of energy to the night. The bar is really beautiful and has again a lot of options for drinks. I would recommend stopping by for a drink before dinner, to watch the game or even to try their fun brunch. Today I visited Corkscrew, a new restaurant in the Hampden area. I met some friends for a quick get together, we were the only ppl in there more than 15 of us. I ordered the US Shrimp and a Caesar salad with salmon. The food was tasty and good. The only issue was the service, it wasn't bad. It just took awhile for drinks to be made and ordered. It looks very nice inside, I will definitely visit the Corkscrew again. The food portions are small plates, don't go there with a big appetite. I came into Corkscrew during happy hour for a drink and and some food while I was visiting the area. Toni was my bartender and she was extremely knowledgeable, lovely to interact with, hospitable! I loved the curry chicken egg rolls that she recommended that I ordered and she made me a San-rita which was amazing! I love how the establishment was black woman owned, in a lovely neighborhood, lively, and was beautifully decorated. I would definitely come back here and I'd recommend this place, especially if you're from California as it reminds me of home. The look of this restaurant is spot on in terms of decor, but the comfort and food just wasn't there for us. The first table we were sat at had stools so low to the ground on one side that I was barely able to see above the table, however, the staff was very willing to move us to a better spot. Food was good but nothing special or creative, and felt like it was probably prepared ahead and reheated. Our waitress was much more concerned about her friends that came in and her phone than checking in on us, but it was later in the evening and probably towards the end of her long shift. The location and ambiance of the establishment is nice but I found the hospitality of the staff a bit lacking. I ordered a sangria and the curry egg rolls. The sangria was okay, nothing special. The egg rolls which took a long while to come out were dry. First off, I love to support black businesses whenever I can. I was invited here by a friend and was looking forward to it. When we arrived, I was impressed with the ambiance and the vibe. The decor, the furniture, the walls, everything was attractive. I also love the patio style doors that give you an inside but outside type feel. The pros: style was grown and sexy, 100% black, etc LOVED that it felt like a spot just for US. Food tasted amazing, I literally wanted to thank the chef lol (We ordered: curry chicken egg rolls; which were not listed on the menu, but out server offered them, Caesar salad, deviled eggs with salmon, Thai chili wings, and fried whiting with fries. Drinks were strong and tasted good so that's a plus. The music was good, there was a live DJ and he had a good mix going. The service was good in some areas, there was a willingness to serve and the server was pleasant. (I think her name was Nyasia ?, she was very helpful and sweet) The cons: Now we waited 30 min to be seated and that was not their fault because we didn't make a reservation. Once seated we were hungry of course and ready to order drinks, etc. Once our server took our drink order it took at LEAST 25 minutes for us to receive them. When we finally did get them, like I said they tasted great but the lack of presentation was disappointing(I'll include pictures of them) In this day and age of Instagram etc people want to take photos and share where they're dining etc the drinks didn't have any garnish etc. for example: a lemon drop could have a lemon wedge, a margarita can have a lime, and a strawberry drink can have a strawberry on the side, SOMETHING! But just poured into a glass looks very lackluster. And I will go out on a limb here and assume maybe they ran out of garnish because a table next to us had a lemon wedge and a flower in two of their drinks. The food came out after a very long wait also and although it tasted amazing, the presentation also failed. After receiving the rest of the order we were missing the deviled eggs. The server went to check on them and came back to say they were completely out of eggs. (After waiting 30 min for them) So we then ordered another order of fish and fries. I understand it's a small plates/tapas bar but to serve in cardboard trays was classless. That's something I expect at a baseball game type of environment or a sports bar. But the vibe and furniture did not match the presentation, especially a salad. To pay nearly $200 for two rounds of drinks for 3 and a couple small plates to be served on cardboard was mind blowing. I will consider giving them another chance because the food and drinks are really good, but they would have to wow me a little more with their presentation next time in order for me to be a repeat customer. read more

Was quite hopeful when I discovered the Corkscrew. Live jazz, good food, nicely appointed and Black owned. Unfortunately, my first visit may be my last. Got there on a Friday expecting music. For whatever reason, there was no live music that day. Oh well, things happen. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks. My sour was respectable but nothing special. My wife said her wine tasted watered down, but it may have simply been the brand. Still, thinks happen. When we tried to order food, we were told that the kitchen was closed. Things happen. Another couple sat next to us and ordered food. There order was taken. When we noted this, a man, presumably the manager, said that the fryer was still up and we could order fried foods. Why were weren't told this earlier.... things happen. My wife asked for a simple order of plain French fries. After 20-30 minutes out came a basket of commercial pre-frozen fries that were cold and stale. Clearly, they were not just fried and likely re-heated. The herb garnish could not disguise the stale flavorless dish before us. We ate perhaps 5 fries and could stomach no more. To add insult to injury, they charged us $12 for what was described as gourmet fries. I don't begrudge a business charging a premium price for a premium product, but I got only half the deal. Oddly, I didn't even see fries on the menu which may have been the problem. With pre-added tip (18%) and tax, I paid $3 each for the five fries we ate. To be fair, they did give my wife a free cocktail to celebrate her birthday but they should have noticed that her wine glass was missing only a single sip and inquired about it. am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the experience I had at your restaurant on March 29,2024.Despite my anticipation of a pleasant dining experience, I encountered several issues that significantly detracted from my enjoyment.Firstly, upon arrival, my reservation was for 7:30pm but due to a lack of parking in the surrounding area My husband and I arrive 7:45pm, I tried calling twice no response. I introduce myself as reservation for Mrs. Kenya Vincent here to dine for my husband birthday. I explain to the hostess and apologize for the lateness, she was very pleasant and said no problem. As the hostess began to seat us in the reserved area near the front window on the Black love seat which was perfect for the occasion, there was a gentlemen assumedly the manager or team lead directed his attention to the 3 hosted to bring us out that area (in his repeated words shaking his head no they cannot sit there.) the host directed and pointed Mrs. Kenya Vincent has a reservation for that area.He would not take their suggestion. Instead he directed my husband & I to 4 different table seating areas. I am a business owner of 37 years and this was by far the worse representation for such an establishment that appear to a lovely facility. This lack of customer service and unprofessional behavior was unacceptable and did not meet the standards I would expect from an establishment of your caliber.Furthermore, Our service provider began on a great path however I was completely turned off I could not adjust myself from the poor representation. Despite the restaurant appearing relatively empty, Our server seemed tentatively and trying to make things right. , Overall, my experience at your restaurant was disappointing, and I believe that improvements of training the manager need to be made in various areas to ensure that future patrons do not encounter similar issues. I trust that you will take this feedback seriously and take the necessary steps to address these concerns.I would appreciate a response to this letter addressing the actions you intend to take to rectify these issues.
