It was my must go BBQ. But now the half chicken is not for real any more. It's only a half chicken breast and a upper thigh from diff chicken. This is what the cashier said when I asked for my half chicken like the picture on the menu: "we have changed the food distributor and give you over a pound of meat now". I was pleased with just the meat. They give you Hawaii bread. My next visit will be ordering meat to go and they can vacuums deal for you and bringing home to fresh cornbread and homemade sides that I enjoy. Worth the stop. I stopped here for the first time with a friend who highly recommended this place as a MUST stop on our way home from Mammoth. I ordered the BBQ pulled pork Sandwich Combo and it was to die for! There is a solid 1 pound of pulled pork on a super soft pretzel type bun, and it comes with a sweet Hawaiian roll and about a cup of tangy coleslaw that pairs perfectly with the pulled pork. I can't recommend this place for more then their bbq, it is sooo good! My only complaint is their inconsistent hours over the Christmas holiday. I understand everyone needs time off, but more consistent notice on their hours online and when we called ahead of time would have been great. Our first trip up at the beginning of December, we drove back on a Sunday really looking forward to having their bbq and they were closed with no signs in front of how long, why, etc. Our second trip up, we were coming home from New Years on a Tuesday and they were closed for their normal days. Today, we were driving home, not expecting them to be open, and we're pleasantly surprised. I've been coming to Coppertop a few times a year for the last four years anytime I'm coming down the 395. This most recent trip I did not know that they had moved. While at the old location a friendly man drove up and said you look like you're looking for Copper Top, I said yes and he said but I needed to go down the street to the new location and that his son fix me up at the new location. When I arrived Hank was there and showed me around the new location which is beautiful. That's why I love going here, great people, great food, in a great atmosphere! read more

We had passed this bbq joint a couple times now on our way to and from June Lake. We were not even that hungry coming back from June Lake, but the line was small and it was time to try it out. Let me start with the best tri tip I have ever had in my life. I love Santa Maria style bbq. This tri tip was better than any I have had in Santa Maria. The seasoning is just fantastic and yes I bought some. The St. Louis Ribs were thick and meaty. St. Louis ribs are not my favorite type of ribe as I prefer beef or baby backs, but they work some serious magic here. The smoke, the seasoning, and the passion for the craft is obvious at first bite. My kids were in heaven. We love bbq and meat in general. Everything was so tender and smokey. It was so good that I could not add sauce to anything. Pulled pork is my least favorite of bbq meats, but again, they found a way to impress me. Tender, smokey, and delicious. It's a smaller kitchen/ seating area, so the ambience is more of a small, bbq joint where you can see the smoke master work his magic, so don't expect a full bar and indoor, air conditioned seating. Their specialty is exceptional smoked bbq. I would love to see them add an oak smoked rib eye plate to the menu and that would be my only complaint. I could only imagine what they can do to a rib eye after that tri tip. I am dreaming of it while I write this review. They also have some way of air sealing your order to take with you to merely reheat. I think I will be doing this next time and eating it at the lake. read more

We did know this until we were miles down the road or I would have complained and asked for something else. Hubby had the tri tip sandwich and I had the pulled pork- both tender & delicious & bonus!: they're served on pretzel buns. Cole slaw was a tangy, tasty yummy departure from your heavy mayo types. It was 103 when we arrived so our group of 6 with 3 dogs took it to go and ate at the park in Lone Pine where we enjoyed the lawn and shade.
