We've been coming here every year on our way to Bishop. The owner is really friendly and the food is amazing. My personal favorite is the chicken. It's tender, juicy, and well seasoned. The ribs are also amazing. Over the years they have added more smokers...not sure if there is a risk of running g out still. But we usually come for lunch so it has never been a problem. Driving from San Diego to Mammoth Lake & around lunchtime we drove through Big Pine and boom the smell of BBQ pulls in.. we ordered the sample platter which included Tri-Tip, 2 rib bones & 1/4 of a chicken, our side was the green chili with beans. We had the option to get the pulled pork but stuck with the chicken. Tri tip: cooked to perfection, was medium to medium rare. The slices were thick & juicy Ribs: were great & falling off the bone. Chicken: it had a great smoky flavor & was tender & moist Green chili with beans: was spicy with a smoky flavor. Finally! Timed are arrival just before Noon. There was a line. Everyone masked. Look at the Coppertop website before you get to the ordering window to save time and make the line go more quickly. Sometimes it's difficult to hear the order-taker bcuz of the mask & highway noise. We tried the Tri-tip sandwich without the In-Yo-Face sauce and the pork rib (5) plate with chips & rolls. The tritip was flavorful and husband said more tender than last time he ate there. The slices of tritip were almost 1/4 thick so just need to make a strong bite. The St Louis-style pork ribs (sauceless as they should be) were flavorful if just a bit salty. They paired well with the sweet roll. Meat pulled easily off bone. read more

Over joyed with his recommendation cause first time customers I didn't know what to choose! The chicken was so tender, the riblets were incredible and so tasty. Loved the pulled pork, & the tri tip was marinated to perfection. The BBQ sauce is incredibly delicious, on the sweeter side... but considering Sweet Baby Rays is my favorite BBQ sauce it's right up my alley! Our sides were the potato salad, some of the tastiest potato salad I've ever had! Not too much onion, cause sometimes potato salad can be so onion-y, but the unique taste made it one of my favorites. Had the beans as the other side and loved all the flavor they had to them as well. Upgraded to add a beer with our lunch too & we were one happy couple! Stopped here with my mom on the way to Tahoe. There was quite a line to order with one person at the register. The line went at a good pace and have no complaints with the wait. I ordered the rib eye burger (freshly made per order) and it was so delicious. The meat was juicy, tender, cooked so perfect with a little pink. The man at the register was very kind, outgoing, and had patience with us as we were first timers. The staff is friendly as well. We visit the Bishop/ Mammoth are 4 to 5 times. The Copper Top BBQ is a tradition The food is Delicious smokey authentic BBQ. We have tried it all but I am a fan of the St. Louis Ribs. They are always meaty, tender and juicy! My wife likes the tri-tip sandwich. We ate there yesterday. Hank the owner, always out front cooking in the cowboy hat, no matter how busy is always friendly and openly answers my endless bbq questions. When we were planning our California RV trip (our first visit ever from England) we put the Copper Top on our itinerary. After all, how could we NOT stop at the most popular restaurant in the whole of USA? It was simply superb! We're not experts in BBQ, but this was a revelation. We chose the tri-tip and the pulled pork. Both were excellent, the pork meltingly tender, and the beef delicious but with enough pull to make the texture just right. The smoke ring on the beef showed how expertly it had been cooked. We chose to use less of the BBQ sauces than others might do, but to our taste that made it perfect. We also bought a pound of vacuum-sealed beef to take with us so we could enjoy a taste of Copper Top goodness a day or so later. As others have said, the tables here are simple picnic benches, but we were fortunate to have ideal weather to sit and enjoy our lunch. The owner and his staff are most friendly and efficient, and the whole atmosphere is good. Oh, and I recommend the local Indian Wells root beer to drink with your lunch. We're hoping to do another tour next spring. Copper Top will definitely be on our plans again! read more

My son and I spent the recent Fathers Day weekend heading up to Mammoth Lakes do do a little fishing and bonding time together. On the way up, we stopped at Copper Top BBQ as it was almost lunchtime and we were hungry. We also stopped here due to a recent review in Western Outdoor News which said 'look for the guy with the big white cowboy hat at the BBQ grill' Sure enough, the grill master (Hank) was leaning over a few tri-tips and ribs that were smoking up the place. We ordered the combo plate which came with a side of cole slaw and ribs, 1/4 chicken, and lots of tender tri-tips. Washed it all down with a orange soda. Man it hit the spot! Over the past several years, my husband and I have passed this place but have always been in such a rush to get to where we were going and then to head back home, we never had a chance to stop. FINALLY, on a recent road trip, we were able to stop and enjoy some Copper Top BBQ! And thank goodness! It was so worth it, we can't wait to come back!!!! I normally am not a slaw fan, but my husband had to stop me from eating all of his side! I loved the pickle surprise in the potato salad as well!!! Tangy, juicy and delicious. This is -still- easily the best BBQ spot in the nation. Just so happens to be in the way to the Sierras, perfect to snag a vacuum sealed bag on your way to your camp site, which we have done. Very disappointing. The chicken was not impressive. The beans tasted like Hormel chili from a can. The potato salad was good and only needed some salt and pepper. The rolls- blah. The max and cheese was unavailable and sold out. I was advised if I want mac and cheese, I need to be the first person in line by an employee. Tip: make more maybe?
