ate here with a dear friend last night. we had MUCHO catching up to do so we picked a place we'd been before and knew was comfortable/easy so we could focus on all the talking and not on our surroundings or figuring out what to get to eat/drink. that being said, we still took forever to pick out a bottle of wine [b/c we kept getting into cath-up convo mode and putting the wine list down]. our [1st*] server had to come back twice to ask us if we'd settled on drinks, but she was very patient and friendly and not at all pushy. we finally settled on a bottle of riesling (chateau ste michelle - YUM) and friendly girl server went off to put that in.
(*i see from the other reviews that this multi-serving thing is apparently the norm here now. i had no idea. this was probably my 4th or 5th time @ this place and i don't remember experiencing that before. at any rate, it wasn't so bad. when friendly girl came to us the first time, i did notice she said something like, "my name is ______,and i'll be one of your servers this evening," which struk me as a little odd. but whatevs. we saw her the most and didn't get asked the same thing multiple times like some other folks have said in their reviews., so it was fine)
when friendly girl server returns with the bottle and glasses, she struggles with the corkscrew so much that another server comes over to help her. she seems embarassed and excuses herself to go put in the soups we've just mentioned we'd like to start with (tortilla chicken). i felt bad for her b/c i bartend part-time and i know how stupid that feels when the occasional bottle just won't cooperate and your customers are [usually impatiently] watching you make a fool of yourself trying to work that damn cork out. but, if i'm totally honest, i probably would've been annoyed (as a customer) had i not experienced it from the server-side before. corkscrew boy server pours our wine and asks if friendly girl has told us the specials? she hadn't, so he does. we're not interested so we order other stuff and corkscrew boy goes off to put those in.
as soon as corkscrew boy disappears, friendly girl is back with our soup. it is piping hot and pretty, and we are knee-deep in convo so friendly girl just sets them before us quietly and moves on. she's reading us, which i appreciate in servers b/c, while attentiveness is good, lots of interruption when you don't need anything is not. points for friendly girl. the soups is pretty tasty. standard tortilla soup mix of spices and corn and tomatoes and whatnot. maybe a little saltier than some would like, but it didn't bother me too much. the minute our bowls are taken, our entrees arrive courtesy of some anonymous and mute food runner.
GF got the crabcakes and i got the same thing i get every time i've been to copper/red rock canyon - the rotisserie chicken. i can't speak to GF's crabcakes b/c i do not do crustaceans, but she seemed pleased. i was definitely pleased - just as i have been every other time - with the chicken. it is SO.VERY.TASTY. it comes with garlic mashed potatoes (the red ones, so a little different) and string beans. it is a LOT of chicken though - i think 1/4 or maybe even 1/2. i actually eat very little meat in my regular diet, so have a lot left over and this could easily be my meat for the whole week, if not more.
as we ate, GF and i got down to the nitty-gritty catching up and friendly girl continued to read us well, only checking on us a couple of times verbally but continuing to pass by frequently, with attentive eyes each time. corkscrew boy came by once too. there were even a few water works and while i was pulling tissues out of my purse for GF, friendly girl appears with two glasses of water and a compassionate smile w/o a word or any awkwardness. more points for her. but where she really got points was with her overall patience. GF and i were in there for over FOUR hours and not once did friendly girl try to rush us out or make us order more (wine, dessert, etc). she asked, we declined and that was it. she kept the water and smiles coming, and kept just enough distance to let us have our much-needed girl time.
so why 4 and not 5 stars? well, it *is* a chain, LOL. i've not yet seen a chain deserving of 5 stars, but i suppose there's always hope. this review reflects my best experience thus far @ the place; not all have been this good [though none were terrible]. they lose points for changing their name [but nothing else] and having the old sign/name up for so long, confusing everyone. almost the entire menu is meat, more meat and fish, making it hard to dine with vegetarians/vegans. as the saying goes, it's the little things, i suppose.
they do the bigger/general things well. nice atmosphere & decor. comfortable seating. good, professional staff. the bar is a good size and they have GREAT drinks. oh, and clean bathrooms! always a good thing. ;-) i'll go back. read more
