This is one of our family favorites for take out. Ambiance isn't quite there. They are pretty barebones on style in the restaurant and it can be busy. The to go line can have a few people waiting but never as bad as lunar new year. We normally have their half Peking duck. It's just enough for four to have two pieces. The whole Peking duck is more bones than meat. The beef chow fun, HK crispy chow mein, and salted egg fish & pumpkin, are our favorites. Sometimes it's a bit salty but sometimes it's just right.
I brought my mom for dinner here last night. We ordered chicken dish and a fish fillet with pumpkin. Both dishes were delicious. Service was excellent. Ambiance is fine.
My first try since the name changed to cooking cooking, it was better than expected. My previous experience many years ago was not the best, I have been reluctant to come back until our group luncheon last Friday. 13 of us filled a large round table, each ordered a favorite dish until stopping at eight or nine. We were all quite happy with the flavors, portions and quality of ingredients. Some standouts were the salty egg yolk shrimp and pumpkin, deluxe veggie, bitter melon wiypork cheeks, shrimp dumplings in broth. The beef Chow fun was nice, chewy not greasy, egg tofu was good as well. Over all a satisfying meal at reasonable prices and very friendly service. It was a favorable experience and we shall return.
Crispy pork belly brought us to this restaurant. It didn't disappointed us, so as another dish - house special pan fried noodles. The dishes were tasty and big portion. The Fried noodles was crispy and topped with mushrooms, fish, pork, chicken, squid, bok choy... it was a good dish! We highly recommend it for crispy noodles lover. Tea, a dish of peanuts, and dessert were on the house The staff were friendly and nice. Never push for order and check. Credit cards were accept but no Apple Pay. The atmosphere was very Chinese style. We recognized many of its guests speak GuangDongnese. So we guessed this restaurant must serve good HK style food. We will come again!
I got takeout from Cooking Cooking a couple of times. They might have the most expensive beef stew wonton noodles in the entire state. Noodles were kind of soggy, but, that might because of my drive back to hotel. The wontons were good. They were nice sized and full of shrimp. The beef stew was nicely flavored. Why is it that when I travel I have to be like my parents and look for Chinese food to eat? I might be back.

Their customer service is okay; I've called them before where the call ended before I was able to ask a follow up question to my order. Recently, I ordered their Roasted Duck Noodle Soup and Fried Rice with Diced Chicken and Salted Fish dishes to-go. My order was ready within 15 minutes, and they nicely separated the noodles with the duck. The noodles were a bit plain for my taste, but it was balanced out with the duck. The salted fish of the fried rice dish was quite salty, and the dish in general was a bit oily this time (compared to previous times I've enjoyed this dish). Missing the Cooking Papa days, but still a place to get some comfort food.
This is a super solid chinese restaurant. I haven't been here in a while, but these days, I order take out. I'm able to order in english without any issues, and I will go in and pick up my order and pay. The parking lot has enough parking spots for everyone, but one busy nights it does get just full. The front desk workers are all very kind and sweet. Note, the prices on the menu might look a little bit more expensive, however, the portion sizes tend to also be on the bigger side!

We ordered a half duck, roast pork, fish and eggplant dish, and mushrooms with green beans. The duck was delicious, same with the roast pork (although on the fattier side). I wouldn't recommend the eggplant dish unless you're into sweet and sour flavors - this was probably our least favorite. The mushrooms and green beans were decent but heavier on the mushrooms. Definetly on the pricier side for a Chinese restaurant but we it was a special occasion so we were okay spending a little more
admittingly not the best tasting chinese restaurant but your go to neighborhood one and one you always can rely on for at least a solid and consistent taste! came here to dine in for CNY and didn't have to wait at all. ;)))
I'm Cantonese and crave canto food. This place didn't have the wok hei that some other canto places have. Didn't hit the craving I was looking for. The porridge also didn't have too much flavor. The pork in the preserved egg pork porridge tasted more like shredded chicken. The place is clean and spacious.

What a hidden gem of authentic Cantonese cuisine! How come I did not come earlier? In Canton foods, there's a concept of "wok spirit" 鑊氣 that roughly translate to the slight caramelization of stir-frying with very hot wok. It takes practices to produce it and this one found the way, in Seafood Pan Fried Rice Noodles. Then they offered clay-pot rice 煲仔飯, a rarity even among Cantonese restaurants and did it authentically (with their own flare). Another dish to test the authenticity is the simple wonton noodles. This comfort food showed the fine art of wonton making and the chef's skills in cooking the thin noodles just right. Lastly, we tried the BBQ items. They were also good. Next time, I will try their congees. read more
Pretty casual dining spot with standard Chinese food. We tried the: yang chow fried rice, mongolian beef, salt & pepper tofu, gai lan, corn and crab soup. The soup could have been a bit more salty in my opinion but all the dishes were quite solid and we enjoyed our meal. Portion sizes were pretty generous and service was quite speedy even though the restaurant got quite busy towards the end of the lunch hour. read more
My partner wanted to try their braised tofu dish (which I didn't get a photo of, oops). Pretty classic Cantonese spot. We wound up parking a block away because their lot was filled. No wait for a table, got seated right away, though there were a ton of people. Service was a bit slow because there were so many tables full of large parties. This isn't their fault. We ordered the braised tofu and the singapore rice vermicelli. Both were really good and flavorful, good wok hei. Pretty classic Cantonese comfort food. This was our first time here and definitely not our last, as my partner has been looking for a place that makes good Cantonese braised tofu! They gave us free sweet red bean soup for dessert, which was much appreciated. We will be back! read more

Oh man--3stars for what happened on Thursday. I ordered several dishes and most of them were great. But when I opened my roast duck and rice, nearly half the meat was just duck neck. I'm pretty sure it's because it was a to-go order--this is the second time it's happened. It really feels like they reserve the worst pieces for takeout. In this economy, $20 for mostly bones is just not right. And I even tipped on the order. If you're ordering anything less than a half or whole duck, double-check your order. read more

We stopped by when they open last Saturday. We ordered their Braised Beef Brisket Noodle Soup and Honey Barbecue Pork. The honey barbecue pork was tasty and honestly the braided beef brisket noodle soup was not that great. The broth tasted like the wonton soup broth, so it was not as flavorful as the typical beef broth. It was very quiet, but could be the time since we arrived when they opened. I saw quite a few of take out orders being picked up within the 30 minutes that we were there. read more

It's been a while since we been back here. I called in my order and was told to pickup 15 minutes later. I ordered: Chicken in chef's special sauce: 4/5 good but Hainan is better. Roasted pork: 4/5 good, not too sweet. Duck and shrimp wonton noodle soup: 5/5 soooo tasty! Wish they gave more broth. Pork and preserved egg porridge: 5/5 yummm! Nice consistency and they are not stingy with the preserved egg. $75 for these 4 dishes. read more

I used to go to the Foster City Cooking Papa growing up, so I was happy to see that this location has the same menu! They even have smoked duck hanging in the window. There's a small parking lot and seating inside. I love their Chinese BBQ and their Chow Fun never disappoints. My boyfriend was feeling under the weather, and the chicken porridge was the perfect remedy for him. I will be back in the future for more takeout. read more
So I was pretty bummed out when I discovered Cooking Papa had gone out of business- sure we kind of had that love/hate relationship but the good times kept me hopeful. Fast forward, I come to find out that Cooking Cooking is essentially Cooking Papa!! Same food, same concept, just a different name. My little fam made the drive and placed our orders. Dinner consisted of: Seafood Fried Rice Duck Tongue Seafood Chow Fun Roasted Peking Duck with Steamed Bao [half order] Dry Braised String Beans [requested for no spice] The plate of duck came out first and just like my last review's complaint mentioned, the only thing hot was the steamed buns. Duck wasn't even lukewarm. I kind of just went with it- I wished I could have been pleasantly surprised but cold duck wasn't something I was shocked about either- at least it was moist. The duck tongue was delicious! For all you squeamish folks, quickly scroll past my photos. For anyone who is curious of simply loves this dish the way I do, place your orders! Flavoring was light, not too overwhelming. Fried rice and chow fun was good, well seasoned, and devoured by my toddler. The best dish of the night was the string beans- the most tender beans I've ever been served and I don't just mean a couple. IT WAS LITERALLY EACH AND EVERY STRING BEAN. 3.5 stars! Doors are kept wide open out in the back with the staff so bring a jacket for your little ones- it is bound to be chilly. Food overall was pretty good but everything got cold a lot quicker than one would hope. read more
We came here to celebrate my mom's birthday and the Mid-Autumn Festival with family! I love that they allow reservations, so we got seated right on time despite the busy Saturday night crowd. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including seafood soup, lobster with e mein, salted egg fried fish, walnut shrimp, sweet and sour pork, BBQ pork, Peking duck, and sautéed pea sprouts. They also gave us complimentary red bean soup for dessert. The food portions were generous, and everything came out hot and fast, even though the restaurant was packed. We'll definitely return to try more Cantonese dishes. Just a heads-up: parking is limited, so you might need to find street parking. Ambiance is causal. read more

This is a traditional Chinese restaurant with generous portions. Their Mongolian Beef was very tasty and instead of just onions that many places go overboard with, this also included strips of bell pepper which was a good addition to very tender beef. One of the better Mongolian beef dishes I have had and plenty of beef (other places I have to hunt for the beef under all the pile of onions, so this had plenty of beef!). 4.5 stars Deep fried squid/calamari- like a tempura fried strips and tender calamari with light batter. Served with green onion diced with garlic and served with a vinegary sweet dip-this was very good. 5.0 stars. Yang Chow fried rice-very good 4.5 stars Braised tofu with black mushrooms-I really liked this dish as the tofu was crispy on the outside but soft and pillowy and tender inside. The tofu melted in my mouth and the sauce gravy was so good. One of the best I have tried with this particular dish. My brother was complaining not enough mushrooms-sheepishly I told him I think I ate most of them-lol! This was a pretty hearty dish for a vegetarian dish. 5.0 stars Chinese broccoli (guilan)-can't go wrong here(unless overcooked) it tastes like the typical guilan dish. On point-5 stars-made perfectly. Chow fun with scrambled eggs and shrimp-this is my Uncle's favorite dish here. I love chow fun normally, but I don't normally like it with scrambled eggs-think it is a texture thing for me. So I did not even eat it but my uncle thinks it is a 5 star normally. For me, I wouldn't order it even if i visited without my uncle-just did not look appealing to me-like a mess to me, Clay pot with seasonal vegetables and seafood- this was ok-I am not really into seafood, tofu was good. 3 stars for me, but the rest really liked it. So averaged 4.5(not quite 5)-this is just good, solid, traditional real Chinese food with big portions still. The dishes ranged from 18.95-20.95 with seafood dishes around 28.95. read more

Ordered to go. Food is ready really fast. Arrived early and it's already packed. Food is really average. Lots of chicken but cannot find another salted fish. I can taste it slightly but I expect to see diced pieces. Very spacious place with many tables. It wasn't so busy when I got there. Only 2 tables and I was the only to go order. However, the parking lot was already 75% filled. Small parking lot for a big place. read more

I regularly dine at the Santa Clara Cooking Cooking restaurant. This cozy spot serves up authentic Hong Kong-style dishes, and is one of my top choices for Chinese comfort food. The menu is a true homage to Hong Kong flavors, with everything from wok-fried chow mein to BBQ pork and duck that are to die for. For this evening, the order was beef chow fun with gravy, braised tofu, black mushroom & seasonal vegetable and the standout Fook-Kin fried rice.--simply delicious! The service is always fast, friendly and attentive whether dining in or ordering to go. They clearly know their regulars, and it's easy to see why people come back. The vibe is casual but welcoming, making it perfect for a relaxed meal with family or friends. If you're looking for a taste of Hong Kong food, Cooking Cooking is your place. Highly recommend checking it out, especially if you're into Cantonese flavors. read more
Came back three months later for dinner again....still really good but not as amazing as the first time, perhaps due to what we ordered. Would not recommend the sizzling rice with meats (chinese sausage and other cured meats) -- only b/c it's simple and not worth the price. Would not recommend the sweet/sour eggplant with fish in clay pot b/c the fish is soggy and gets lost the sauce would be better suited for fried pork or chicken. Did not care that much for the beef that had a bit of black pepper and honey b/c it was a bit over marinated to make it tender, although the mushrooms were tasty. The winner again was the fermented mustard green vegetables with pork belly, which we ordered last time. Second favorite was the tofu that was slightly braised and had the same mushrooms as our beef dish. ALL the flavors of the dishes were much better than another Chinese restaurant we went to, even if I would not order again the dishes mentioned above. Service fast and friendly. Would return back for sure. read more

the menu is not exactly the same — i've noticed some items have been trimmed. seems like it is less emphasis on the HK brunch stuff and more emphasis on entrees

No, authentic wontons don't have mushrooms inside.
Why did cooking papa permanently change ownership/close to become papa express?
They got rid of the wait staff and reduced the menu significantly. The big sign is still Cooking Papa but they changed the name on top of the door so it's quite confusing.
Is this restaurant closed for business?
It was, by the department of health due to Vermin in the kitchen. See my photo
Has anyone used Cooking Papa to cater a party?
Yes, I used it to cater an office party. They usually need about 2 days of lead time. Overall it went pretty well.
