This is one of our family favorites for take out. Ambiance isn't quite there. They are pretty barebones on style in the restaurant and it can be busy. The to go line can have a few people waiting but never as bad as lunar new year. We normally have their half Peking duck. It's just enough for four to have two pieces. The whole Peking duck is more bones than meat. The beef chow fun, HK crispy chow mein, and salted egg fish & pumpkin, are our favorites. Sometimes it's a bit salty but sometimes it's just right.

My first try since the name changed to cooking cooking, it was better than expected. My previous experience many years ago was not the best, I have been reluctant to come back until our group luncheon last Friday. 13 of us filled a large round table, each ordered a favorite dish until stopping at eight or nine. We were all quite happy with the flavors, portions and quality of ingredients. Some standouts were the salty egg yolk shrimp and pumpkin, deluxe veggie, bitter melon wiypork cheeks, shrimp dumplings in broth. The beef Chow fun was nice, chewy not greasy, egg tofu was good as well. Over all a satisfying meal at reasonable prices and very friendly service. It was a favorable experience and we shall return.

I got takeout from Cooking Cooking a couple of times. They might have the most expensive beef stew wonton noodles in the entire state. Noodles were kind of soggy, but, that might because of my drive back to hotel. The wontons were good. They were nice sized and full of shrimp. The beef stew was nicely flavored. Why is it that when I travel I have to be like my parents and look for Chinese food to eat? I might be back.

Cooking Cooking is always busy, both for ordering to-go and sitting inside the restaurant. Their customer service is okay; I've called them before where the call ended before I was able to ask a follow up question to my order. Recently, I ordered their Roasted Duck Noodle Soup and Fried Rice with Diced Chicken and Salted Fish dishes to-go. My order was ready within 15 minutes, and they nicely separated the noodles with the duck. The noodles were a bit plain for my taste, but it was balanced out with the duck. The salted fish of the fried rice dish was quite salty, and the dish in general was a bit oily this time (compared to previous times I've enjoyed this dish). Missing the Cooking Papa days, but still a place to get some comfort food.

admittingly not the best tasting chinese restaurant but your go to neighborhood one and one you always can rely on for at least a solid and consistent taste! came here to dine in for CNY and didn't have to wait at all. ;)))

This is a super solid chinese restaurant. I haven't been here in a while, but these days, I order take out. I'm able to order in english without any issues, and I will go in and pick up my order and pay. The parking lot has enough parking spots for everyone, but one busy nights it does get just full. The front desk workers are all very kind and sweet. Note, the prices on the menu might look a little bit more expensive, however, the portion sizes tend to also be on the bigger side!

Hits the spot if you are craving Chinese food but nothing extraordinary. Have definetly been to cheaper alternatives with a nicer ambiance and better quality dishes. We ordered a half duck, roast pork, fish and eggplant dish, and mushrooms with green beans. The duck was delicious, same with the roast pork (although on the fattier side). I wouldn't recommend the eggplant dish unless you're into sweet and sour flavors - this was probably our least favorite. The mushrooms and green beans were decent but heavier on the mushrooms. Definetly on the pricier side for a Chinese restaurant but we it was a special occasion so we were okay spending a little more

I'm Cantonese and crave canto food. This place didn't have the wok hei that some other canto places have. Didn't hit the craving I was looking for. The porridge also didn't have too much flavor. The pork in the preserved egg pork porridge tasted more like shredded chicken. The place is clean and spacious.

Oh man--3stars for what happened on Thursday. I ordered several dishes and most of them were great. But when I opened my roast duck and rice, nearly half the meat was just duck neck. I'm pretty sure it's because it was a to-go order--this is the second time it's happened. It really feels like they reserve the worst pieces for takeout. In this economy, $20 for mostly bones is just not right. And I even tipped on the order. If you're ordering anything less than a half or whole duck, double-check your order.

We stopped by when they open last Saturday. We ordered their Braised Beef Brisket Noodle Soup and Honey Barbecue Pork. The honey barbecue pork was tasty and honestly the braided beef brisket noodle soup was not that great. The broth tasted like the wonton soup broth, so it was not as flavorful as the typical beef broth. It was very quiet, but could be the time since we arrived when they opened. I saw quite a few of take out orders being picked up within the 30 minutes that we were there.

A very happy customer that traveled hours to eat some real Chinese Cantonese food.

Did this place used to called "cooking papa" before?

    Yes. Was cooking papa before.

Is the Cooking Cooking menu the same as the old Cooking Papa menu? Is indoor dining available now?

the menu is not exactly the same — i've noticed some items have been trimmed. seems like it is less emphasis on the HK brunch stuff and more emphasis on entrees

    What happened to Cooking Papa!?

They are not part of Cooking Papa franchise, still same owner and chief group

Is the egg puff still on the menu? And does anyone know what kind of sugar they used for them (at least back then)? Thanks in advance

No egg puff. The items that are available for takeout is on their website.

Is there in door dining now?

No, there isn't indoor dining yet.

Just saw that they had a grand opening sign up! Are they back to being Cooking Papa? Or are they doing Cooking Papa Express?

    Cooking Papa with new owners

Does the wonton have any mushrooms? Inside it and placed in the noodle soup?

No, authentic wontons don't have mushrooms inside.

Why did cooking papa permanently change ownership/close to become papa express?

They got rid of the wait staff and reduced the menu significantly. The big sign is still Cooking Papa but they changed the name on top of the door so it's quite confusing.

Is this restaurant closed for business?

It was, by the department of health due to Vermin in the kitchen. See my photo

Has anyone used Cooking Papa to cater a party?

Yes, I used it to cater an office party. They usually need about 2 days of lead time. Overall it went pretty well.

We knew to go early, since they don't take reservations and we often see lines outside. We arrived at 10:30am and the front manager said if we can be done my 12:30, that they had a table for us. Party of 12, since we got there early, we agreed. The side room had the biggest round table for us. They ask you what kind of tea you want, we like chrysanthemum tea. You order the items on the paper menu and it comes to your table. So we got going on the orders and TBH, we must be hungry, because we did a lot of orders (we had plenty of left overs). Tried some favorites and a few new items that we thought were unique to their restaurant. My dad has to order crispy noodle and chow fun, and we also ordered chicken fried rice. The service was prompt and attentive, with enough servers to take care of the side room. Since it was the "sun room", the sun was shining through the windows and it was bright. Review from my parents: it was just meh, they prefer the other place near our house. I think the food is good, but probably won't come back again with a big group of us, since they don't have many big round tables. And personally, I prefer the whole experience of the ladies coming around with their carts. Perhaps their dinner menu is also worth trying. Bonus for us is that we can literally walk to this restaurant. Parking could be an issue if you come later.

Ironically, I'm not a fan of them myself--they're a bit too eggy for my taste. When it comes to dim sum quality and service, I honestly prefer Koi Palace. The food quality there is more consistent, and the service is much more phenomenal. The only things this place really has over Koi Palace are the lower prices and those black sesame custard buns my friend loves! I've been here at least a dozen times, and the food can be hit or miss. Sometimes dishes come out cold, like they've been sitting out for a while instead of being served fresh and hot. That said, there are a few items we always order that are consistently good when brought out fresh like salted crispy pork chops, siu mai, shrimp rolls, and fried calamari. Be prepared for a wait on weekends since it gets crowded. If you're coming with a large group, it's best to arrive before noon. The restaurant is located next to a hotel, and finding the restroom can be confusing since it's inside the hotel. Service is also pretty minimal--they seem understaffed, and I almost always have to flag someone down just to get basics like soy sauce, chili, and water. I don't understand why they don't just have the sauce on the table for guest to dip, but I get that they're saving $ on controlling the cost down. On my most recent visit, the experience really went downhill. Our table had food but no soy sauce, chilli nor water, and when I flagged a waiter multiple times, he got visibly annoyed and irritated. It was frustrating--we shouldn't have to chase someone down repeatedly for basic condiments. Being met with attitude for that honestly left a bad impression. That experience alone makes me reconsider coming back. Good food at a good price is one thing, but poor service--especially to that extent--can really ruin the overall experience.

As a lot of the reviews mentioned, this place offers a lot of Hong Kong comfort food for a pretty affordable price (most entrees are under $17-18), given the portion size. Ordering was done via scanning a QR code on the phone. I opted for the Pork Belly and Tofu Skin Clay Pot. The entrees don't come with rice, so you do have to order that separately (ends up being an addition $2 for rice). Since we were dining in as a party of six, they ended up giving us giant bowls of rice to share from instead of individual bowls. The pot itself was incredibly hearty, with a good mix of meat, tofu, and vegetables. For me, this was enough for 2 meals, so I ended up taking half of it home for leftovers. My boyfriend got the Peking Pork Chop. He said it was a bit salty, but overall enjoyed his dish. The rest of his family ordered other entrees, with all of them seeming to enjoy it. The restaurant itself has many tables, and we were seated promptly upon entering. Food came out fairly quickly as well once we ordered. Definitely a solid spot when the HK comfort food feeling strikes up!

We had been waiting for an hour and they were not calling anyone for party of 6. So ridiculous. After waiting for 1.5 hours, we were finally seated and guess what? Once we were seated, everything moved rather quickly. We were given a menu to order -- we ordered and within 10-15 minutes, everything was brought out to us. No wait time for the food, it was very fast. The food was decent but nothing memorable. Overpriced dim sum, overpriced food.
