Came with a bunch of friends to celebrate a birthday on a Sunday evening. The restaurant is located inside Centerpoint mall and parking was quite easy to find. Ambiance was like your typical Chinese restaurant. Nothing to write home about. We ordered some of their signature dishes including house super bowl congee, Teriyaki Seafood ramen, Crispy Deep Fried Tofu, Stir Fried Sirloin with Rice Noodle and Satay sauce, Empress Fried Rice, salt and Pepper Squid, and Honey Garlic chicken wings . I also got the Red Bean Grass Jelly Ice cream Freeze. Honestly, I've came here before and I would say Congee Queen is very standard Cantonese food. Although funnily enough, we didn't exactly order much Cantonese food at all. Everything we had was quite good and the portion sizes were fair. I really liked the teriyaki seafood ramen, stir fried sirloin with rice noodle, squid and chicken wings. The red bean freeze was very delicious as well. It had the perfect amount of sweetness. The only dish I would not recommend is the deep fried tofu. It was way too bland. Service for the most part was good. However, I really have to call this one waiter out. He was just so incompetent... We ordered two orders of the chicken wings, and when he brought them over, he said it would be a good idea to transfer the chicken wings to 1 single plate to save space. Then he proceeded to tell us that he isn't very good at that and requested us to do it. Which I thought is just kind of ridiculous considering that is his job lol. And then when he brought us water on a waiter tray, he somehow spilled the entire tray with like 10 glasses of water onto my friend's lap. My friend is very nice and didn't make a big deal out of it but he had to ride his motorcycle back in chilly weather with wet pants. I can't imagine that being very fun for him. Congee Queen used to be a family tradition at a different location growing up, and their consistent and reliable execution of Cantonese Chinese dishes keeps us coming back, even as they've expanded into an empire with multiple locations. Recently, I was searching for lobster E-Fu noodles to add to our New Year's gathering. I mean, most if not all Western establishments are closed on New Year's Day. Most Chinese restaurants lack an updated online menu, but I appreciated that Congee Queen's app had everything listed, and at lower prices than Uber Eats ($45 vs. $54). It probably isn't the cheapest around but it was simple, I didn't need to call in to clogged up phone lines and can schedule for pick up the time I needed it. The user experience of the app isn't great. After I placed my order for schedule pick up at a later time, the app auto prompts that it would be ready in 30mins. Making me call the restaurant immediately to check and they then reassure me that it would be ready for the time I scheduled. I mixed the noodles on top of the lobster to prevent overcooking, though it might appear skimpy in photos, the lobster is all at the bottom. However, the app has some glitches; clicking on offers like the free item with the first purchase didn't work. Besides that, I also ordered sweet and sour chicken and fried turnip cakes. The sweet and sour chicken had steamed up a bit and lost it's crunch for takeout, which I don't think was too preventable (perhaps take off the lid as soon as you get home). They have an afternoon tea special that goes from 2-5pm and from like about 20 different items it also comes with a cold drink and price ranges from 11-19$. Came here with my family because Congee Wong (CW) was closed for renovations so we thought Congee Queen (CQ) was the next best option. I ordered efu noodles with ginger, green onion, and tiger shrimp; beef ho fun; turnip patties; salted fish fried rice; and crispy chicken with their secret sauce. Compared to CW, CQ was just okay. The servers were nice but we had trouble communicating with some of them as we couldn't speak Canto/Mandarin (e.g. asked for hot sauce but instead got cups of water) but we were fine with this. The portions were good for sharing and it tasted mostly good but there was a lack of protein. The turnip patties also didn't have shrimp and radish like CW. The fried chicken with their secret sauce was good but compared to a previous visit, my sister was suspicious that it wasn't the actual dish even though the servers confirmed it was what we ordered. On Sunday night my family (wife and son and I) visited this restaurant (Yonge and Dundas location) for the first time, we have gone and walked past this place many, many times, and never ventured inside. Few things about our visit and the place: 1.- Location is convenient 2.- Place is fairly clean and tidy 3.- Service is rather quick, fast and efficient for the most part, comparing to a few other eating places, we have visited before. 4.- Ordering system is effective, as you use a QR code and app to submit your order 5.- Staff are friendly, and do tend to any specific need you may have ALL is good, but: Now for the BUT: 1.- Food is good, don't get me wrong 2.- Quantity is very well sized/proportioned and abundant 3.- It would seem they use good ingredients to prepare the food HOWEVER: Quantity does not always and necessarily mean Quality and that is the issue. Although, they do give you lots of food. what they provide you in quantity, it lacks in quality, the food lacks some flavor, some kick, and this was the consensus with the rest of my family. The food lacks the "Umami and Kokumi" that so many people talk about. Maybe this was just a one of, but first experiences and impressions do last (almost) forever, and 'dictate', whether you would return to a place or not, and in our particular case, we (goes for my wife and son as well), we are not 100% sure we would be back to this place. Took a visit here on my trip to Toronto shortly before the pandemic and I'm glad that I ate here. The decor is beautiful and the restaurant is very busy, but orders and service also move quickly. This location is very friendly for non-Chinese patrons as they speak perfect English and provide forks. Here are my thoughts on the items I tried: Beef and dough fritter rice noodle roll - Very crisp dough with tender beef that's perfectly seasoned. The rice noodle is super soft and elastic. The cilantro tempers the saltiness perfectly and the sesame seed adds a nice light crunch. The peanut and plum sauces pair with this dish perfectly. Sweet and sour groupa filet - Delicious crisp batter with tender fish. The sauce is perfectly balanced, not too sweet nor sour. BBQ pork - Soft and tender with a good amount of fat, the glaze has the perfect balance of sweet and salty. BBQ duck - Crisp skin with tender and juicy meat. I come down here often with my family because they live in North York area. We always come at dinner time. SERVICE: Decent and kind of a typical service you get at mostly all Chinese restaurants. They are fast and sometimes gets your order all correct, missing an item, or gets an order wrong. Our recent visit was a double birthday celebration 95 years old and 1 year old. Nothing "special" was done by the staff (not that we expected any). FOOD: It's pretty consistent here. Food is good. We typically order calamari (fried squid), congee, fried rice, lemon chicken (my little brother loves this), and beef with vegetables. They've always tasted the same and texture is the same. STARING: So this is one of my pet peeves in restaurants. My 1 year old (one of the birthday celebrants) was not having a good day. She didn't get her nap so she was crying so much if I didn't hold her. Some of the employees were eating right beside our table (not sure why they couldn't eat on the other side but who knows). One of the girls that came our from the washroom stared at my baby and shook her head. Your average congee queen with minimal customer service. For whatever reason, I have been visiting a lot of congee queens lately. This particular visit was for lunch. Their lunch portions on the lunch menu is superb. You are not eligible for the cash discount when dining in for the lunch special and take out will add an extra dollar onto the combo price. For my meal, I chose the sweet and sour chicken with rice. It came with a small dish of Chinese Choy or veggies, a daily soup (egg drop with corn) and a spring roll. The spring roll also came with a nice little dish of sweet and sour dipping sauce. The food was pretty average as the chicken was a bit over fried but what really stood out here is value. For less than $20 a person, you could have enough food for lunch and could pack a dinner too. There was such an abundance of food for the lunch special that it really made this congee queen a pretty nice one to enjoy a decent lunch with a friend. It was not busy which is nice, especially if you are looking for a place to chat with a friend and catch up. Overall, I had a good experience. Most likely the best place I've been to this holiday season. The place was packed, but clean and nicely renovated. We got in within 5 min. As they say: food is fresh when turnover is fast! We got the classic Shredded Pork and Gold Preserved Egg congee, beef chow mein, Two Assorted BBQ Combo and Spicy Pepper salt Garoupa Fillet. The congee was great, and so was the roasted duck. The char siu was better than average, and the addition of those sweet beans on the side was interesting. The chow mein, which usually doesn't get too much of my attention, was nicely done. It had a lot of flavor, yet wasn't too salty. My absolute favorite, however, was the fish. It was so tasty, I probably ate half of the dish by myself! The coating was crispy, with a sparkle of salt and pepper that hits the taste buds perfectly. The inside was tender and hot, with no bones. The chopped green onions and red pepper had been cooked just enough to release their fragrance. The veggies added extra flavor, and their tenderness complimented the crisp of the fish. Recently, our whole family went to Congee Queen restaurant to have dinner. We had a really bad experience with this restaurant. First and foremost, eating in a clean environment is vital to me and customers. This restaurant has flies buzzing around as soon as we seated and the dining area is slippery like there is a layer of grease all over the floor. We were struggling if I wanted to sit here any longer. Secondly, if you are running a restaurant, make sure you are aware of all the customer service issue. The food order was taking longer than it should and they missed my order. When they realized that a mistake has occured, they should apologize but they did not. Thirdly, food poisoning due to Salmonella. My Dad was having severe diarrhea illness with stomach cramps, high fever and vomitting after several hours eating in this restaurant. He went to ER the next day. He undergone lots of diagnosis. The ER told us that he was infected with Salmonella by consuming food that has been contaminating by human feces. Most likely the restaurant employees did not clean their hands thoroughly after washroom. I was very disappointed with this restaurant. For those who'd want to try this restaurant, please avoid. We had been taking lunch here till last Friday since a friend came over and we decided to try dinner here. I found the evening servers more attentive and helpful. Ordered three dishes: stir fry beef with green onions, fried chicken wings with honey and deep fried rice noodle rolls. All tasted great. We chose Congee Queen over Congee Wong only because of proximity to where we were. This location is at center point mall. While the mall has long closed, Congee Queen was open until midnight. Having been here many times, we knew what we liked and wanted. Super supreme seafood congee bowl, deep fried dough fritter, and dry fried ho fun noodles with beef. We were seated quickly and ordered without looking at the menu. They were out of ho-fun, so we settled for Cantonese Chow Mein. For those of you who do not know what congee is, it's just rice cooked in lots of water. The rice breaks down to simple sugars as it cooks and the dish becomes slightly thicker (it's still runny, but not as runny as soup). Many describe it as porridge. Being only rice and water, it carries the flavour of rice flour. The real flavour of this dish comes from what you add to it. The seafood bowl consisted of squid, shrimp, salmon, grouper, and clams. There may have been mussels and scallops too, but I didn't get any so I can't confirm nor deny... green onions and cilantro are added for additional flavour and aroma. Each table has a standard soy sauce, vinegar, and hot chili oil. Many add vinegar to congee to enhance the flavours. The congee was decent (I prefer Congee Wong over Congee Queen) and so was the deep fried dough fritter. Pretty standard stuff here. 3,5 stars. Cantonese Chow Mein. Pan fried egg noodles topped with Chinese greens, carrots, celery, bbq pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, scallops, bathed in a Chinese brown gravy. The sauce softens the otherwise crispy noodles. The dish is a classic and you can never go wrong with it. I never remembered carrots as an ingredient as a kid, but it seems to be a staple now as it adds colour, sweetness, and texture. The mix of soft and crispy noodles with the topping is comfort food to me. 4 stars. With a bigger group we would normally get additional dishes, but tonight we were only 4 and it was late. 2 was plenty for a late night snack. Some of my other favorites include Soft Shell Crab Fried Rice, Salt & Pepper Squid, and Deep Fried Squid Tentacles. If in season, the snow pea leaves with the egg/crab sauce is also a good choice. If red meat is what you're looking for, the cubed beef is quite flavourful. Sorry, but I didn't get pics of the menu this time around so I can't tell you what the numbered items are, next time... Overall, the meal didn't disappoint, and we didn't expect it to. We ordered what we knew we liked. And whether we were hungry or not, it's comfort food for us. We ordered a 6-Grain Healthy Congee, Shrimp Cheung Fun, & Doughnut/Beef Cheung Fun. The Shrimp Cheung Fun was the weakest dish as it wasn't steamed enough. I could tell that it was a bit dry when it arrived. On the other hand, Doughnut/Beef was delicious - freshly made due to the crispiness of the doughnut stick. Portions were large for one person and food tasted fresh and delicious. This location has delivered the exact same quality over the years, whether it's dine-in or takeout! Missed out on the chance to stop in as regularly as before without the daily commute, but fortunately picked up takeout a few times as was not disappointed at all. For dine-in, Congee Queen offered a great selection of dishes to make up a simple Chinese family dinner. We could even be classic with the steamed fish, or step it up a notch with lobster. Their essentially all-day menu meant there was something for everyone, and it was easy to grab an extra dish to-go for the next day's lunch. How nice is that, right? Sometimes we'd change it up from the go-to items and go for a more diner style meal of fried rice, fried noodles, congee, and street-style snacks like rice noodles. It was like we were immediately transported to a completely different restaurant! Often times Chinese restaurants struggle to deliver diverse menu offerings because their kitchen specializes in one area and only writes other items on the menu for a variety in presentation. Congee Queen was not that and we found their mains, seafood, diner offerings, street snacks, and even their roaster to be up to par. For takeout, we typically gravitate towards more fast food/diner options since they transport and keep well. Fried rice, fried noodles, and street snacks are the way to go! Their house special seafood fried rice noodle is a great choice for those looking for something with a mild kick and all the umami of a seafood flavoured fried noodle. They've also got a health-oriented multigrain fried rice which is also a good hit and offers an exciting different texture to the standard fried rice. Other items worth checking out include their fried shrimp in thousand island sauce, hot plate stir-fried beef and veggies, and classic barbecue pork. Always on my go-to list, I'll be looking forward to coming back when dine-in service is open again! I've eaten at several locations of Congee Queen but this was my first visit to this one. While I can say that the food has been fairly consistent and good, the big difference has been the service. We kept it simple, with a congee and a chow mein. We enjoyed the meal, despite discovering egg shell in the congee. The service could have been better. We had to call our server a couple of times to get plates and the check at the end. I'll probably think twice before coming back to this location. read more

Came here to catch up with a friend on Dec 16 at about 8:0pm. I have been to this restaurant before but not at this location. Food was as expected; timely, tasty, and fair portions. My friend and I kept it simple for this visit and we only ordered the Super Bowl and some fried rice (I don't remember which one exactly). Even with ordering only 2 dishes, we still managed to take home food. The prices are fair and the service was ... mediocre. The waiters at this place always look miserable and you have to wave them down aggressively to get their attention. For some reason, every waiter looks annoyed to be working here. [Fried Chili Turnip Patties] $9.75 - this dish is marked as a spicy one so be aware of that before you decide to order it! I highly recommend this dish because I'd compare it to a superior version of home fries because of how flavorful the turnip ends up being. I'm borderline salivating just writing about this dish because now I want to go out and order a helping of it to devour! This dish is made up of turnip diced into cubes, thrown in a chili sauce, stir fried with chicken and shrimp. This turnip cubes can be eaten by people who don't have teeth (or have had some wisdom teeth removed just days beforehand) as the inside of each cube is soft like mashed potatoes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND ORDERING IT AT LEAST ONCE TO GIVE IT A TRY! [Snow Pea Leaves with Garlic Sauce] $15.50 - I really can't comment on how tender the snow pea leaves were because when I visited this location, I had just recently had my wisdom teeth removed. This meant everything I was consuming had to be broken down with my front teeth like a rabbit. I do want to mention that this dish seemed oddly salty but it's likely just a one time mistake on their end. My date said it was fine though so maybe the problem actually lies with me... [Mixed Vegetable Fried Rice] $10.75 - Again, when compared to the turnip patties, every other dish seemed lackluster because the turnip was the star of their menu! As my date is a vegetarian, this dish was one that we ordered because you need something to fill your stomach other than just (heavenly) turnip patties and snow pea leaves! If I remember correctly, there were peas and carrots in the fried rice. There were likely more vegetables but I genuinely cannot recall it at this very moment.... Overall, service was great! My date and I arrived shortly around 7PM and it was packed. Luckily, we only wanted a table for two as opposed to everyone else who was there with large groups. This meant we were seated relatively quickly compared to the rest! My date and I ordered waters for drinks and they were perpetually refilled as the night went on. I believe he and I stayed there until almost 10PM and we never felt like they were rushing us out. Granted, by that time the rush of people had died down significantly as peak dinner time had passed. This franchise has become our dining spot/chain of choice, particularly when we're in "default" mode - and why not? Yes there's often a line during the lunch and dinner rush hours, and 'intimate' is not the first word you'll think of (i.e., take your boy-/girl-friend some other place for a romantic VD-type dinner), but the food is usually of decent quality. Prices have slowly crept up, even when one's mindful of the difference in exchange rate between CAD and USD, but it's still pretty good value, as portions are usually large.
