Lobster Combo + General Tso chicken
Jayson Z.

Hidden in a small plaza and seems like a typical westernized Chinese food take out, Ann's Congee is a gem of a spot. We ordered the lobster combo and while the lobster made it a tad pricey, everything else was definitely bang for your back.

The Lunch special is only from Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 4pm. It includes the soup of the day, one crispy deep fried egg roll and one of 12 dishes for $8.99 + tax. You can also add a soft drink for $1. I ordered #C3 from the Lunch Special menu of Eggplant with Minced Pork in Salted Fish Sauce on Rice Noodle. For that price and quantity, it's one of the best deals for lunch in the area. I suggest also calling and placing your order ahead as it takes about 15 minutes for them to prepare the meal. There's also lots of free parking in front of the restaurant. You might want to also ask what is the special of the day which so far I've seen rotated between Mapo Tofu and Fried Green Beans with Minced Pork for $7.00.

The portion sizes are huge and the food is pretty consistent. Its pretty tiny and definitely more of a takeout place.

This place is supposed to be (one of) the best in Vaughan. Do yourself a favour and drive to Richmond Hill instead. If you do come here, stick to the Cantonese dishes, which are probably better. Crab meat with fish maw thick soup was pretty good. The soup was tasty and there was a lot of fish maw. It's better with Vinegar which unfortunately is not provided. I couldn't identify whether the minute particles red & white were crab or crab flavoured seafood stick. Given how far they went to cut it up, probably the latter. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. Szechuan Style Tiger Shrimp Chow Mein was alright. It was crispy (deep fried) noodles with separate sauce. The sauce tasted OK. While the noodle portion was huge, there wasn't enough sauce (even for a smaller portion), and there wasn't much shrimp inside. Chicken wings with General Tso Sauce was tossed with the sauce (despite this being takeout) but even taking that into account they weren't really crispy. The sauce was not great either, only serviceable, having a muted flavour. The egg roll was freshly fried, but was stuffed only with bean sprouts and had no minced pork (or indeed anything else). Braised Beef Noodle in Soup was awful. It was too spicy - and only spicy at that, without the richness or flavour that this dish should have. Moral of the story: don't go to a Cantonese place for Taiwanese food.

This is a hole in the wall dive restaurant located in a strip mall. They do lots of carryout. We came here an hour before closing. There's only about 4-5 small tables. Not good for large groups. We ordered 4 dishes, fried turnip cake, ok crispy beef, fried squid tentacles and tiger shrimp congee. We were very happy with all the choices. We asked for crispy turnip cakes. She must not have had the request much but she tried her best. She doesn't dredge the cakes in cornstarch so it wasn't all breading. Some of the pieces came out crispy, but not all. It was still good. The women that took our order also cooked some of the dishes. She gave us a good suggestion of the Ok crispy beef. It was more than Ok, it was delicious. Flavorful and crispy. There was a nice little tangy sauce that was good. It wasn't a gravy and the beef wasn't swimming in it. It was slightly coated and so tasty. I could have ordered a plate just for me. We like squid so we tried the fried squid tentacles. It was seasoned well and crispy. It was worth the eats. The last dish was tiger shrimp congee. The congee has a nice taste of shrimp and quite a few tiger shrimp in the bowl. For 3 adults and 2 kids, it was more than enough food. Nice little place and we will definitely come again when we return to Toronto.

Ann's Congee - Ann's Special Fried Rice, HK Style Spicy Clam, Chicken Congee, Deep Fried Calamari and Chicken
Mike H.

I've been searching for a congee restaurant west of Markham and east of Mississauga. This area is barren of good Chinese food options for the most part. Ann's peaked my interest after reading their positive reviews. Upon arrival, Ann's kitchen aromas were worth drooling over. Our hopes were raised. Our takeout feast for two was ready at the counter. Ann's Special Fried Rice was tasty though a bit dry, and came in a generous portion with shrimp, scallop and other seafood bits. HK Style Spicy Clam was infused with wok flavours and would've been delicious if not for the broken shells in every bite! The Chicken Congee was a safe bet, smooth with large chunks of tender meat. With congee, I almost always order Deep Fried Calamari, and theirs was quite comparable to the other more well-known restaurants. However, their Deep Fried Chicken did not impress the KFC fan in our household (my wife lol)... the meat was too dry, the dark crispy skin was over-fried, and tasted just bland overall. Sadly I didn't get to meet the friendly Ann, and food was mostly mediocre on this visit. I came for takeout because the restaurant was said to have limited dine-in tables. Yet only 1 out of their 4 tables were occupied on this Sunday evening. Based on the flavours, I'm willing to come back again to try to take a liking to Ann's Congee restaurant.

Incredible Authentic Humble Spot Every bite is just a bite of amazing flavour, great portions and so filling.

Anns Congee 1102 Centre St, Unit 2, Thornhill N23 Fried Rice Noodle w/ Beef N24 Fried Rice Noodle w/ Beef and Veg 012 Fried Chili Turnip Patties 02 Salt & Pepper Squid The turnip patties weren't as flavourful as I would have hoped but the salt and pepper squid was really good (crispy, not greasy, the squid wasn't chewy). Both fried rice noodles were good and the portions were huge. The noodles come in a small and large size.. we ordered the large not know how big the portions were so we had this meal at least twice lol! Worth mentioning is that nothing is overly salty or greasy so It feels like its on the healthier side which is a bonus.

2020-01-18. Ann's Congee. Vaughan, ON. Interior. Only 3 tables. Max seating for about 12.

2020-01-18. Ann's Congee. Vaughan, ON. So I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time now and during one of the worse days to be on the road, we decide that we want to go out for lunch. Looking for some comfort Cantonese dishes, we opted to knock off one on my list. Located in the Dufferin and Centre Street area, Ann's Congee is located in a plaza on the North side of Centre street, between Dufferin and Bathurst streets. The place is absolutely tiny. With seating for only about 12, their MO is definitely carry out. When we arrived, the place was empty. But then again the streets are covered with more than a foot of snow, and they only have three tables in the entire place. We seated ourselves and a moment later someone came out to greet us. While there is a menu, it's also on their walls. Pictures of their most popular dishes with corresponding numbers for easy ordering. I know, it's kinda ghetto, but it greatly expedites the process of turning customers over. The lady that greeted us gave me a sense of déjà vu, but I couldn't place my finger on it. We spent quite a few minutes going over the menu looking for a good vegetable dish and when we couldn't find anything that tickled out appetites, we decided to ask what was fresh in their inventory. In speaking with our server, she asked what we were looking for. We told her the type of veggies we were kinda craving, what complementary ingredients, the type of sauce, and the style of cook. She said they can accommodate! We ordered a Cantonese Chow Mein, a Dry Fried Flat Rice Noodle with Beef, Salt and Pepper Squid, and the custom vegetable dish with beef. As the food came out and we ate, it was as I remembered it. Ahhhh comfort food... we were making small talk with our server, and the déjà vu was killing me. All of a sudden I remembered how I knew that face! This lady often served us at Congee Wong! When I blurted it out, she laughed and confirmed that she recognized us, yes, since my kids were just babies. Obviously she had left CW and started her own business, and I was happy for her success (Ann's Congee has been in business for about three years now). The food was less salty than CW, but the flavours were just as good. Portion and price point are on par with CW as well. With these things on par, my preference would be to support the small fry. This will probably be my new goto place for comfort Cantonese. 4 stars overall. Before leaving, I also learned that she was only a minority partner in the business and that the former Head Chef at CW is the majority stakeholder... no wonder the food is so similar! If You would like to experience more, come dine-with-me.yelp.com I'd love to have your company... Bon Appétit!

Very cheap and the flavor exceeds the price for it's well. Good food for the price, but not spectacular food if you don't count price. The fish maw soup was the best dish I tried. The thickness was just right and the flavor of the fish maw, crab meat, and egg whites were extracted well. The stir fried lobster with ginger and green onion was nice and flavorful. The lobster was surprisingly sweet given the very low price of the meal (5 course banquet dishes for $52.99) The deep fried crispy chicken was okay -- the chicken was a little tough but the meat was still crispy and the dish was flavorful The deep fried pork chop with spicy salt and pepper had a nice crispy batter and a good mix of flavors, fairly standard. The stir fried chinese broccoli with garlic was a bit softer than other preparations, probably boiled before being stir fried, but still fairly good. Overall, a good value but don't expect the most refined flavors. The portion sizes are very large though so you'll be happy with plenty of leftovers.

Pan fried turnip patties - huge portion!

This place is a very solid 4-4.5 out of 5 stars easily. This is more of a take out restaurant versus a restaurant with take out. In total there is probably seating for a total of 13 people, though that does not diminish the service at all. We were served by Ann herself, who we happened to have the pleasure of meeting first at congee wong. Ann as always was very warm, welcoming, attentive and accurate. Her service, in terms of a Chinese restaurant is pretty darn good (often times I find HK style restaurants consistently lack in service), but Ann makes sure your taken care of. In terms of food, we found out that the chef also happens to have worked with Ann at the previous place mentioned, which would explain why there are quite a few similarities in terms of menu, as well as some new welcome additions. Again, the food seems to be as good, if not better then congee wong. So if your a fan of congee wong, or any of the other numerous congee places in Toronto (congee queen, congee wong, mr congee to name a few) you will also be a fan of Anns congee, though there is the added bonus of Anns excellent service. And as I mentioned, the food is as good, if not better then any of the named restaurants. This little place is a very welcome addition to this area, though I wish they had a full restaurant. But in the mean time, this is a nice little 'mom 'n pop' style place and is definitely worth a try if your in the area. As an added bonus, Anns Congee is even cheaper (by a dollar or two) for each dish that she makes vs any of the other mentioned congee places. Good service? Good food? Good price? C'mon now, need I say more?

First time trying. Seafood chow mein a great choice. Big portion, lots of seafood and reasonably priced. Deep fried spicy squid pretty good. Great place for Chinese food for the location.

Maybe I came here with high expectation after reading all these 4 and 5 star reviews?! I would recommend Ann's Congee as a solid takeout place for some decent Chinese food in the area. Love the huge menu and the selection they offers. But the "restaurant" itself is really small. I would not suggest dining in especially if you are a group of more than 4 people. I do prefer Cantonese food serves right from the wok to the table as wok hay is really important. Chicken Congee ($5.50) was quite good. They also have lunch combo that you can order from chalkboard in the restaurant. Ann the owner is really nice. Her friendliness give this place a really homey feel.

While the noodles were not crispy, the dish was loaded with chicken, shrimp, bok choy, mushroom & other vegetables that soaked up the delicious savoury sauce. We added a cream corn soup to round out. I've also had the Szechuan Chicken before and have to admit it's another hit fast food dish. This restaurant has a mash of different menu items including pho, sushi & Thai curry as well. The sushi rolls were passable. It doesn't have to be perfectly authentic to be a good option at the mall. While we've never tried the server experience, the metal takeout tables here work perfectly fine for a quick meal. For our latest meal, we had the Ginger Beef with rice which is another pleasant Chinese takeout dish popularized locally. It came hot out of the kitchen. The deep fry technique here preserved the tenderness of the beef much better than other places where I've tried this dish. It went well with the crispy batter drenched in sweet spicy soy sauce. Skip it or it hit? If you're looking for Asian food at the mall, an occasional visit here is not bad.

This time around we got 2 boxes of chicken (24) and noodles for total of $32. Service is ok! And there's food court if you want to eat there. Otherwise mainly takeout spot. Also get the red sauce! Once you start those wings, you can't stop. In fact, these wings are so good that I ordered 200 of them for my party last winter, and I still don't get tired of those damn wings! Also - they are great if you keep them in the fridge for a day & reheat them too. Although their fried rice and vegetables are not as out-of-this-world as their wings, they all still pack great wok hei while tasting surprisingly "healthy" (because they are not as heavily seasoned as other Chinese food places). I think the chef wanted to ensure that the other dishes did not steal the show of their wings. Overall, I strongly recommend China Wok Superb Chinese food, regardless of whether you want to grab a combo meal with wings, rice and vegetables or just ten wings for a meal. They are all great options with a decent price.

We were watching on YouTube and saw that the bloggers were reviewing the location in Richmond Hill. We assumed that the Vaughan location was the same one. So, that was our fault. But, we decided to stay and didn't feel like traveling all the way to the other one. We were immediately seated after we arrived. The place is pretty big, with a very elegant interior. Tables seating up to 4 people line the leftmost wall, which has framed paintings adorning it. Circular tables for groups of 8 sit in the center of the restaurant and on all of the tables are crisp white tablecloths with beautifully folded green cloth napkins. The specials are also written on a framed green chalkboard on the back wall and the place is illuminated by built-in spotlights. We ordered the following: Braised Tofu with vegetables - Daughter liked it a lot. She said that it tasted like Chinese takeout but in a good way. Basa Fish Chili Bean Sauce- This was ok, but I thought the sauce was the same as the other orders. Spicy eggplant with shrimp- Hubs said that this tasted similar to the braised tofu with vegetables and it was ok. Overall, we felt that these 3 entrees and sauce all tasted the same. It was ok but no big deal. This place is located next to a mall, so there was plenty of parking. Service was quick and friendly. We told our server about daughter's peanut allergy and it was noted on our bill. There were quite a few other tables occupied. I'm glad we got a chance to try this place. The Hakka Chow Mein was actually quite good-tasty, well prepared (noodles were not too hard/soft); we ordered spicy and it had a hint of spice but not enough kick. The Chili chicken was decent as well-they have dry or wet options-I ordered the dry and it was good but once again the spice did not have enough kick to it. However, keep in mind that I would not be their core client (who may not be able to handle very spicy food like I can). I had forgotten that it was customary after a Chinese funeral (his mom was Chinese and her husband was Vietnamese) to have something to eat after a funeral. I was moved that he was thinking of me during a difficult time. I said yes. He got his niece to get me the address of the restaurant. She conveniently had a business card, which made it easy. I saw Legend Chinese Restaurant. I put it into my maps app, and drove my friend and me over there. He insisted that I drive him. Maybe my company provided him comfort. I know that the reverse was true. It was nice to spend some more time catching up with him as we headed northbound. This eatery is in a plaza with Red Lobster across from it. We had dined there together eons ago. There was lots of parking. I backed into a spot and we walked over to the restaurant. A woman greeted us. Both of us wearing black made her realize that we were a part of a larger group that had come from a funeral. She pointed us into a closed area with wall dividers that separated us from the rest of the customers chowing down. We didn't have dim sum. Instead, we had an eight-course meal. I had never dined here, so I was looking forward to what we were about to eat. Each table had to make one seat space open for the server to come with food. I happened to be next to this gap. It has its pros and cons. I helped move dishes and such to make way for new dishes to arrive. Our server did spill some water on the table, but it wasn't crazy. I loved the lazy Susan. Our table had eight people. It was needed to get to whatever we wanted on it. We had hot looseleaf tea and hot water in tea pots. The tea was yummy, but I had no clue what it was. We ended up pouring the hot water into the looseleaf tea pot when we were running low. Our server was also great to refill the pot with the looseleaf tea a number of times. We got the following items during our meal: - Roasted pork - Shrimp and scallop soup - Chicken - Sweet and sour pork - Shrimp and scallops with sugar snaps - Steamed fish - Mushrooms with baby bok choy - Tofu pudding - Fortune cookies Half our table were vegetarians, so almost everything wasn't suitable, except for the tofu pudding. Folks at the table were kind to let me take photos of most dishes before we wrecked them, except for the vegetarian tofu vegetable medley that came out. They were so hangry that they simply went in. I have a mental picture of the generous rectangles of tofu, with mushrooms and baby bok choy. There may have been more veggies. I was happy that they could finally eat! We started with the roasted pork. It was excellent. The pork was succulent. The pork skin was crispy. Delicious! I loved the shrimp and scallop soup. It had small cubes of shrimp and baby scallops in a nice broth. The large bowl of soup sat next to me. It was deadly. I love soup. No one wanted seconds, so I polished it all. The chicken was tender. It was nice with the scallion oil. My friend and I remarked that the sweet and sour pork was excellent. It's probably because we are so used to chicken as the protein. The pork was crispy even with the sweet and sour sauce coating each morsel. The pork was tender. I loved the bell pepper and the pineapple chunks. The shrimp and scallops with sugar snaps was divine. I love sugar snaps and they were perfectly cooked while still crispy. The shrimp and scallops were large and yummy. I grew up with my mom steaming an entire fish. It's dealing with the bones that is annoying. Thankfully, a man at our table went ahead and portioned out the fish such that he eliminated most of the bones. Wow! Can I have this man de-fillet any fish that I want to eat?! The fish was naturally yummy from the steaming method. I loved the green onions on top and the soy-based sauce. I love mushrooms. The fact that we had an assorted mushroom dish with baby bok choy was awesome! Sadly, there was oyster sauce in this dish, so the vegetarians couldn't enjoy it with us. There were two different types of mushrooms. The large ones were meaty. The smaller ones were yummy, but difficult to pick up with chopsticks. I ended up eating them with a soup spoon. There was steamed rice at our table. I had some with the mushroom sauce. It was delicious. We ended up with tofu pudding. We got to scoop the tofu out and then add the syrup. The tofu and syrup were warm. It was a delightful dessert that wasn't all that sweet. We got a large bowl of fortune cookies to end our meal. My fortune said that I tend to be straightforward and honest. My friend joked that my fortune was completely wrong... haha! I used the washroom before I headed home. The women's washroom was clean. No complaints. I loved the food here. It was top-notch delicious. It was comforting and much needed. I'd love to have dim sum here and see what that's like. (413)
