My favourite go to place for comfort Cantonese congee and etc cuisine. They take reservations for parties larger than 8. Reserved for a Sat and got seated pretty quickly. Congee Queen has all the hits. We tried plain conpoy congee, two types fried rice, shrimp chow mein ( not on menu), large dumplings in soup, beef tenderloin. The whole customer experience was good until the end. This was Chinese new year eve and dining in at 5:40pm already busy. Table for 2 needs to wait for 5mins. I order 3 dishes using QR code. 1 is steam rice with shrimp and other is roast pork and steam chicken. These 2 come in good timing. The 3rd one is sweet and sour stir fried pork. Over 40 mins the dish did not show up. Ok, I know this special day is busy and my dad and I were not hungry anymore. We cancelled this dish and ask for bill. I intentionally pay extra tip that did not need the server to give me change in cash. I left after paying . By the time I was at the door, the server asked me to come back and said She has to check what I paid. First time being caught back and also WITHOUT APOLOGIZED from the server. My visitors from Oklahoma, originally from Malaysia, don't get too much Asian food back in Tulsa so we've been dining at a lot of Chinese restaurants. This time, we went to Congee Queen in Markham, a place I haven't been to in a long time. The dishes that we ordered were mostly comfort food, nothing too fancy. We had BBQ Pork Rice Noodle Rolls, typically served at dim sum; a couple of different Congees; Fried Chili Turnip Patties; and Salted Fish and Pork with Rice in Hot Pot. Everything was good, enjoyed by all. My favourite was the hot pot dish with the salted fish and pork. It had tons of flavour. Overall, we enjoyed the food. The service, however, could have been much better. Our server didn't seem very interested in helping us and the tone of his voice definitely wasn't friendly. One of their specialties is fish soup noodles and that's what most of our party had for lunch. For this dish, you pick your soup base, noodle type, and 2 toppings and it goes for $14.25 CD. As we were gearing down and going back to the real world and maybe more normal eating (meaning a lot less lol), we just picked 3 noodle bowls which were split amongst our 3 couples. The bowls are quite generous and the selections were: - parsley & preserved egg soup, rice noodles, beef internal organs ("internals delicacies") and beancurd. - fish soup, rice noodles, pork hock and shrimp wonton - fish soup, rice noodles, beef tendon and shrimp wonton We also ordered small side dishes of BBQ pork and fried squid ($3.75 CD each), and a bowl of shrimp wonton soup ($11 CD). Recently went to Congee Queen near Markville Mall to celebrate with friends before the New Year. We went on a Saturday evening and I was surprised to see it less busy than I expected. Most tables were full but no one had to wait and service was quick. Prices for food have gone up but fortunately quality of food was more or less what I expected it to be. Normally their drinks are decent but I ordered the Black Milk Bubble Tea and the tapioca was very hard to chew on. The server was very friendly and even playful at times, joking with our group. I always recommend getting the BBQ duck (half) or Crispy Chicken. The Diced Sirloin Golden Bowl is one I would encourage you to try as well if you like steak bites! The few times I've been to various Congee Queen locations, they would have the QR code to scan to allow people to order themselves but this location didn't have it. Also, you used to get complimentary dessert at the end but it's a bit of a hassle now. We asked the first server when we were getting our bill and they said no they don't offer it anymore. We sat for a bit just having a conversation and flagged a friendlier server to ask if they offered complimentary dessert. Your staple chinese lunch items shared family style. When I am in the mood for a variety of hearty chinese food, this is the place to be! You can expect it to be quite busy at all times of the day, share food dishes in family style, and have a variety of flavours/ dishes. You'll always get greeted with a pot of tea at your table and go through their extensive menu. Right when I sat down, I made sure to order the preserved meat clay pot rice, as that usually takes up to 20 minutes to prepare. After ordering the clay pot rice, is when I will continue to look through the rest of the menu. Clay Pot Rice - 9/10 Always fresh and piping hot when brought to the table. The toppings are always plenty and rice is cooked perfectly. Make sure to mix in the soy sauce with the rice. If you're lucky, you should be able to scrape the sides of clay pot where the rice is to get a crunchy rice piece (my favourite!). Eel Fried Rice - 10/10 This is always a must get for me whenever I dine here. Slightly sweet from the eel sauce, chunks of eel meat and fried nicely with the grains of rice. Topped with bonito flakes that still move, not because it's alive, but because of the heat from the rice! Fried Turnip Cakes - 9/10 This is a great snack for the table to share. Cubes of turnip cake that is fried, paired with egg, scallions and shrimp. Sightly crisp on the outside but super soft and tender on the inside. You can also choose your spice level for this when ordering. Shrimp & Egg Flat Noodle - 8/10 I enjoy this when I'm looking for something a little more slurpy but not a noodle soup. There is a thick clear sauce that tops this noodle dish, making it nicely ooey gooey for slurping. Come here often as the portions are large at a very reasonable price. This is probably my most frequented Congee Queen because it seems to be the only one that always has space and takes reservations. Service is usually good and food comes pretty fast. Great for family gatherings. Whenever I come I almost always order the garlic fried snow pea tips and bbq duck. Those are definitely staples and always done well at this location. I would also recommend the signature fried rice, deep fried spicy salt shrimp / squid, and pan fried turnip cake. read more

It's a decent restaurant for larger groups, with a variety of options Having lived in Markham for years, I had heard a lot about this restaurant since they opened one here, but never really had any incentive to try. I got the opportunity on Canada Day, when other (i.e. western) restaurants would normally be closed. We were able to book for a large group on the day of. They had a high chair for the little one. As a result of the holiday, it was hectic. It probably went past the wait staff's minds to give us plates until we asked them about it. Aside from that, we got our food in a reasonable time and attended to our needs promptly. I don't have any major complaints with our food. As a Hong Konger I feel their Cha siu and congee are a disgrace to Hong Kong food. Cha siu is not fatty and served cold. The congee was tasteless and lacks the beef flavour. The only thing good was the red bean icecream. read more

This Congee Queen location is pretty much the same as all the other locations in the GTA. But that's what makes it so great! Every time I come to the GTA, I always find it hard to pass on an opportunity to come eat at this wonderful restaurant. Every time I have ate here, the food has always been prepared quickly and the service is friendly and efficient. I have never had to wait unnecessarily long for food, even when the restaurant is packed. The interior at this specific location is very modern, however I found that the washroom could have been kept cleaner, hence one star taken off this review. It only took me 5 days of driving, three time zone changes, and 2500 miles to find Congee Queen. I'm so glad that I found it! We came her for takeout twice. Yeah, my wife still thinks everyone has COVID, and that she will catch it from you. We tried their roast pork, beef rice roll, congee, and their wonton/dumplings. Everything that we ordered was excellent. Their portions were good sized too! It was a great experience the two times I visited. I'm glad I found Congee Queen. Congee Queen comes highly recommended by locals and I can certainly understand why--it has an expansive menu and portion sizes are HUGE--you really get a lot for your money here! We were fortunate to be seated in what appeared to be the private dining room, converted to include today's rush. It's a very pleasant dining experience. Ordered my favourite dish, the Cantonese taofu with green vegetables and carrot, in that luscious Cantonese brown gravy which I adore. The taofu was perfectly cooked, very fresh and not greasy. We also ordered the Taiwan-style vermicelli with egg and shrimp, which was nice, even though I have never seen or tasted this dish in Taiwan! The Hong Kong coffee was a must. COVID review Poor Flow set up, STILL in year two of COVID makes me not want to come back after a few previous tries. Ordered food online this time and not liking the app, it also added an auto gratuity at check out that I could not verify before confirming my order. It's unclear on time for pick up or how to cancel. Phone lines were busy for over 30 mins and disconnected, so I braved going in hoping it should be ready by then. Disgruntled patrons lining up outside politely, while their food gets colder inside. Signage isn't clear and no one to guide at front entrance, leads to frustration of Uber Eats cutting the lines sometimes. The right side labelled EXIT is for paid online orders or Uber Eats. The Left is for unpaid orders. So people could bypass the wait outside, but most do not know this, even some poor Uber Eats drivers. Then there's a mishmash of people in the front waiting while I waited 30 mins from outside and bypassing the line ups to learn my food was ready over 45 mins ago. Now the food is mostly the same but prices have stayed up $3-6 more a dish from preCovid. They were too busy Mothers Day, even for a 4:30pm dinner pick up. My spicy salt&pepper squid had 3 chopped kernels of red pepper, and a skimpy dash of garnish, which will make any regular diner livid! Rice and noodle dishes mostly decent, meats seem less than before. For the price increase, terrible patron flow and help at pick up makes this place a no return during COVID. I called about 17 times before my call was picked up and answered to place my 7pm order at around 5pm. Arguably, they were very busy due to the Mother's Day rush. I came here to pick up a take out order (8 dishes) for a mother's day dinner this past weekend. Called before hand and said I'd be coming up pick up at 7pm. Ofc, everyone else in Markham was probably getting CQ for dinner for mother's day as well since when I got there, there was a line up out the door also lots of people inside standing and waiting for their orders as well as bustling uber drivers impatiently waiting for their orders as well. Basically they told me that the 7pm order was probably looking closer to 730pm. I took a leisurely stroll around the plaza block and then came back at 725pm just as they were calling my name out. Other than that small delay due to Mother's day (reasonable) everything was fine. The food was delicious and they got our order correct. I just feel that take outboxes are smaller portions than if you were to actually dine in. Too bad with covid and everything. I would totally recommend CQ in general. Price is decent - won't break the bank and food is always so tasty. My favourite dishes would be the fried chilli turnip cakes, the mango salad with the shrimp, and ofc shredded pork congee with century preserved egg. I have been going to this place for 10+ years, and the food is consistent and delicious. Service is efficient ; food always comes out hot and fresh even when it's a full house. One of my favorites is the seafood congee; love the salmon and scallops. I also like the salmon or eel fried rice, as the portion is huge for sharing and more flavorful than other places. The fried chilli turnip patties is one of their specialties too. Meals come with a drink on weekday afternoons ; I recommend red bean ice cream or cold milk tea. This post marks my 365th review that I have written this year. It was a goal that I had set before 2018 had started. I wanted to write a post a day. Instead, I am a bit early, reaching my goal on October 14. It would make sense that I should mark the occasion with a post of a local business. It's a coincidence that the next place that I had on my review drafts is Congee Queen. It's amusing to me that I have never been to this Congee Queen location in Markham. On Friday night, I decided to drive from Brampton to Markham along Highway 7 and had to do a few detours along the way (Highway 7 at both Weston Road and Yonge Streets were horrifically backed up due to construction). I was hungry. It was 11 pm. Where should I go? I hit Congee Queen. I tend to visit the Thornhill location more, mainly because it's on my way home from work and it's the flagship location. I have also enjoyed dining at the Don Mills location. I walked in and asked for a table. I got a polite warning that the restaurant closes at midnight. I said that I had time. The woman first seated me at one table, apologized, and seated me at another one. No worries. I had a comfy seat. I ordered the beef and mushroom sizzle plate dish. I love mushrooms. I wanted protein and green onions. I got it all. She asked if I wanted anything. I decided to skip the rice. I am glad that I did. This dish was huge. It probably had two whole onions in this dish. It had lots of sliced beef, mushrooms, and green onions. The flavours were incredible. I ate pretty much the whole dish, leaving just the sizzling plate and the equivalent of one whole onion on it. I got complimentary tea. It was perfect to wash everything down. I paid for my meal in cash. My server seemed relieved that I finished well before midnight. I was hungry. I knew that it wouldn't be a problem. I need to order takeout from here more often. This restaurant's food is consistent with my experience dining at the other two locations. I've been to the Leslie location many times but this was the first time at this location. There's lots of seating but it does fill up rather quick. Overall the food was good except that I found the dish with the rice noodle rolls was bland. I expected some flavour but found it lacking. My mom swears that the Leslie location gives complimentary dessert but when a server was asked here she suggested we look at the dessert menu. I think I'll stick with the other location. read more

Revising my review once more. It's a roller coaster of a ride! Reducing it back down to a two star. A recent visit made that decision for me. We walk in...It's just past 4:30 PM. Most of the tables were filled. We weren't asked but were immediately escorted to a table meant for eight people. It was just myself and my wife. Luckily no one was seated at our table during our meal. The server who took our order seemed a bit rude as flip. Aren't customers supposed to be treated with respect? Not so at this place. Our table was near the back close to the BBQ counter. You can hear every word coming out of the mouth of the guy behind the counter. Again...rude as flip to people ordering takeout. I haven't been to this restaurant in ages and suddenly craved their radish stir fry dish (lo pat gaw). Prices overall definitely increased throughout the years. Most of my favorite dishes being $15-20. I ordered take out, and from order to pick up it took a solid 30 minutes. Way too long to be honest. Taste was on par from before. Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent experience. Parking was available behind the restaurant and the restaurant was packed upon arrival at 5:30 pm. The wait for a table was ~30 minutes. There are a few seats, in addition to standing room by the door. Started off with the jelly fish which was decent. Portion was generous and the flavoring was on point. Moved on to the Snow Pea Leaves in garlic sauce that was ok. Vegetables were decent and flavoring was okay. Portion was generous. The Cantonese Chow Mien was huge with a generous crispy fried noodle portion along with tons of chicken, pork, bbq pork, and prawns. Highlight of the meal was the Diced Sirloin with Chili Black Pepper in Golden Bowl. Plenty of tender pieces of sirloin cubes in a fried wonton shell that was quite tasty.
