Mixed Mushrooms and Bean Curd Congee

My visitors from Oklahoma, originally from Malaysia, don't get too much Asian food back in Tulsa so we've been dining at a lot of Chinese restaurants. This time, we went to Congee Queen in Markham, a place I haven't been to in a long time. The dishes that we ordered were mostly comfort food, nothing too fancy. We had BBQ Pork Rice Noodle Rolls, typically served at dim sum; a couple of different Congees; Fried Chili Turnip Patties; and Salted Fish and Pork with Rice in Hot Pot. Everything was good, enjoyed by all. My favourite was the hot pot dish with the salted fish and pork. It had tons of flavour. Overall, we enjoyed the food. The service, however, could have been much better. Our server didn't seem very interested in helping us and the tone of his voice definitely wasn't friendly. To top it off, one of the dishes brought to us was incorrect! This tainted the experience for all of us.

This is a modern franchise that offers a broad Chinese menu and not just congee. Their dining room is spacious, clean, and contemporary. One of their specialties is fish soup noodles and that's what most of our party had for lunch. For this dish, you pick your soup base, noodle type, and 2 toppings and it goes for $14.25 CD. As we were gearing down and going back to the real world and maybe more normal eating (meaning a lot less lol), we just picked 3 noodle bowls which were split amongst our 3 couples. The bowls are quite generous and the selections were: - parsley & preserved egg soup, rice noodles, beef internal organs ("internals delicacies") and beancurd. - fish soup, rice noodles, pork hock and shrimp wonton - fish soup, rice noodles, beef tendon and shrimp wonton We also ordered small side dishes of BBQ pork and fried squid ($3.75 CD each), and a bowl of shrimp wonton soup ($11 CD). Total pre-tip bill for all of this was just $69.21 CD or $51.27 USD. It was another delicious and excellent quality meal and a great value. It's kinda the Toronto Asian meal theme and was definitely very nice to experience!

Great for parties! Came here to celebrate a birthday with family, there was 5 of us in total. We got lots of food. They were quick to bring out the food and it was super tasty. They also kept checking in on us and making sure our table was cleared of any dirty dishes even when the restaurant was full.

Recently went to Congee Queen near Markville Mall to celebrate with friends before the New Year. We went on a Saturday evening and I was surprised to see it less busy than I expected. Most tables were full but no one had to wait and service was quick. Prices for food have gone up but fortunately quality of food was more or less what I expected it to be. Normally their drinks are decent but I ordered the Black Milk Bubble Tea and the tapioca was very hard to chew on. The server was very friendly and even playful at times, joking with our group. I always recommend getting the BBQ duck (half) or Crispy Chicken. The Diced Sirloin Golden Bowl is one I would encourage you to try as well if you like steak bites! The few times I've been to various Congee Queen locations, they would have the QR code to scan to allow people to order themselves but this location didn't have it. Also, you used to get complimentary dessert at the end but it's a bit of a hassle now. We asked the first server when we were getting our bill and they said no they don't offer it anymore. We sat for a bit just having a conversation and flagged a friendlier server to ask if they offered complimentary dessert. She also acknowledged they don't really do it anymore but said she'd make a one-time exception for our group. It was a cold red bean dessert with jelly - not bad!

Your staple chinese lunch items shared family style. When I am in the mood for a variety of hearty chinese food, this is the place to be! You can expect it to be quite busy at all times of the day, share food dishes in family style, and have a variety of flavours/ dishes. You'll always get greeted with a pot of tea at your table and go through their extensive menu. Right when I sat down, I made sure to order the preserved meat clay pot rice, as that usually takes up to 20 minutes to prepare. After ordering the clay pot rice, is when I will continue to look through the rest of the menu. Clay Pot Rice - 9/10 Always fresh and piping hot when brought to the table. The toppings are always plenty and rice is cooked perfectly. Make sure to mix in the soy sauce with the rice. If you're lucky, you should be able to scrape the sides of clay pot where the rice is to get a crunchy rice piece (my favourite!). Eel Fried Rice - 10/10 This is always a must get for me whenever I dine here. Slightly sweet from the eel sauce, chunks of eel meat and fried nicely with the grains of rice. Topped with bonito flakes that still move, not because it's alive, but because of the heat from the rice! Fried Turnip Cakes - 9/10 This is a great snack for the table to share. Cubes of turnip cake that is fried, paired with egg, scallions and shrimp. Sightly crisp on the outside but super soft and tender on the inside. You can also choose your spice level for this when ordering. Shrimp & Egg Flat Noodle - 8/10 I enjoy this when I'm looking for something a little more slurpy but not a noodle soup. There is a thick clear sauce that tops this noodle dish, making it nicely ooey gooey for slurping. Come here often as the portions are large at a very reasonable price. This is perfect for family style sharing and larger groups as they have really big tables.

This is probably my most frequented Congee Queen because it seems to be the only one that always has space and takes reservations. Service is usually good and food comes pretty fast. Great for family gatherings. Whenever I come I almost always order the garlic fried snow pea tips and bbq duck. Those are definitely staples and always done well at this location. I would also recommend the signature fried rice, deep fried spicy salt shrimp / squid, and pan fried turnip cake.

It's a decent restaurant for larger groups, with a variety of options Having lived in Markham for years, I had heard a lot about this restaurant since they opened one here, but never really had any incentive to try. I got the opportunity on Canada Day, when other (i.e. western) restaurants would normally be closed. We were able to book for a large group on the day of. They had a high chair for the little one. As a result of the holiday, it was hectic. It probably went past the wait staff's minds to give us plates until we asked them about it. Aside from that, we got our food in a reasonable time and attended to our needs promptly. I don't have any major complaints with our food. There were tons to choose from, and were all of the quality I'd expect it to be. That said, nothing really stood out to me. Just proper Chinese restaurant cuisine.

As a Hong Konger I feel their Cha siu and congee are a disgrace to Hong Kong food. Cha siu is not fatty and served cold. The congee was tasteless and lacks the beef flavour. The only thing good was the red bean icecream.

We reserved a table for 8 around 6pm and it was super packed! We ordered a noodle dish which had a tad spice, chicken & duck congee which I thought was okay, the fried turnip was delicious, fried tofu was good, mushroom mix dish oh yummy! the shrimp wontons were good, a lot of shrimp inside, and the fried calamari was fried well, not too oily! Would recommend coming here!

It only took me 5 days of driving, three time zone changes, and 2500 miles to find Congee Queen. I'm so glad that I found it! We came her for takeout twice. Yeah, my wife still thinks everyone has COVID, and that she will catch it from you. We tried their roast pork, beef rice roll, congee, and their wonton/dumplings. Everything that we ordered was excellent. Their portions were good sized too! It was a great experience the two times I visited. I'm glad I found Congee Queen. I hope to be back one day to try more of their food.

This location is preferred over the Richmond Hill branch. Their food seems more fresh. Service is average. Waiting area is more spacious and has lots of chairs to cater people waiting for a table.

Hong Kong cafe.  That flavour just transports me right back to Kowloon, TST!

It was very nice. There was a line up which moved quickly, and we were seated within 15 minutes. We were fortunate to be seated in what appeared to be the private dining room, converted to include today's rush. It's a very pleasant dining experience. Ordered my favourite dish, the Cantonese taofu with green vegetables and carrot, in that luscious Cantonese brown gravy which I adore. The taofu was perfectly cooked, very fresh and not greasy. We also ordered the Taiwan-style vermicelli with egg and shrimp, which was nice, even though I have never seen or tasted this dish in Taiwan! The Hong Kong coffee was a must. There are many typical Hong cafe type foods available as well as traditional Cantonese fare. Busy place, service is adequate and nothing more. Food made up for the meh service.

I would have given 5 stars because the food was so delicious, but as I was eating the garlic greens there was something hard in it that almost broke my tooth... When I took it out I found a little metal rod! It was really disturbing and I stopped eating the rest of the food.

The lid on my shredded potato salad wasn't on properly and the sauce leaked through my Fantuan bag. The food gets five stars. Sadly, the lid on my potato salad wasn't securely on the container. I had my food in my insulated bag, so the sauce leaked into the Fantuan bag and my insulated bag. Luckily, my car was fine. As a result, my rating is four stars. I wanted to try a new eatery. I looked at my Fantuan app and noticed He Bei Chinese Cuisine. It had dumplings and snacks that I enjoy, so I said yes to placing a dinner order from this eatery. I ordered these items: - Pork and chive steamed dumplings (large has 14 dumplings) - Tea eggs - Shredded potato salad On Fantuan, when you purchase $15 worth of food, you get the shredded potato salad for a cent. Deal! After placing my order near my home, I drove over to this eatery. The drive was ten minutes. I was given an estimated time of fifteen minutes. It was ready in ten minutes. I had no problem finding this eatery. There was plenty of parking. I pulled into a spot and walked in. I saw the Yubu sign. My heart sank, as I loved the Korean tofu pockets from this joint. I liked seeing places to sit down and eat at He Bei. Nice! A woman behind the counter came over. I said that I had a Fantuan order. She talked to me in Mandarin. I don't understand it, but we were fine communicating with each other in our languages. She pointed out the blue Fantuan bag on the table behind me. I thanked her and wished her a nice day. She said thanks right back. I put my food in my insulated bag. With the leak, I managed to launder the Fantuan bag and clean my insulated bag. After I cleaned up, I had dinner at home. The food was amazing and filling! I loved the shredded potato salad. Sure, a lot of the sesame-soy sauce was gone. However, it tasted yummy. It was worth the cent! The steamed pork and chive dumplings were so good. I didn't dunk them in soy sauce. The filling had so much moisture that I felt like I was eating soup dumplings. The filling had yummy flavour and the dumplings were steamed to perfection. Excellent! You can buy frozen dumplings from this place. I'll need to do it. The tea eggs were the perfect snack while streaming hockey games. I peeled the shells off both of them. The eggs were cracked to allow the amazing soy-based sauce to marinate and get into the eggs. Delicious! I'm a fan. I'll take a closer look at the lids on my food next time. I'm glad that I put food in my insulated bag. It saved cleaning my car's upholstery! (59)

So we ordered Maggi Lobster (~3lbs) for $34/lb, and stir fried beef with Chinese broccoli (gai lan). The lobster was cooked perfectly, with the Maggi sauce not being too salty. They definitely gave us all the pieces of the 3lbs lobster. The gai lan had a bitter aftertaste, which is common for this vegetable. I wished they had a way to get rid of that. They were generous with the amount of beef and was well marinated. The cut wasn't that great, but that is to be expected. I don't think they added much MSG or at least used good quality ones, as we did not feel overly thirsty later in the evening. They give free daily soup and dessert. What we were most impressive was with the service. The waiters were very attentive, changing our plates twice during our 1ish hour meal. The also gave us wet wipes and more napkins without us requesting it. They even offered us additional soup, which we declined as we were quite full.

Black bean and beef Hofun (seriously lacking in quality) 4. Chinese dough fritters (awesome as always) I would say I was 50% satisfied with the meal. The was a cold draft, we even had to tell the hostess/manager, if they could provide a divider to divert the draft from hitting our table. We ordered 9 dim sum dishes, one be Roasted Pig Mixed Cold Jellyfish, which was $23.80. I had the idea that it would be a fair portion. When it came, I was shocked, it was only 6 pieces of Roasted Pig. When I spoke with the manager about the portion size, he commented "for that price it is fair". There was not apologies and walked away, nor was it written on the menu. If I had known it was only 6 pieces (size of your index and middle finger put together). I would not have ordered it. If you want to have Roasted Pig, you can get better deals else where. Also, ordered Marinated Chicken Feet for $13.98, when it came to table, it was also a disappointment, part of the chicken feet was dark in colour, not even sure if it was even edible or not. Another dim sum dish that I have order was the steamed chicken with fish maw. The chicken was okay, but there was only two small pieces of fish maw, (the size of each piece was 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch). The order 6 dim sum dishes that was order was mediocre, tasted better from other Dim Sum restaurant. When I received the bill for the meal it came out to be $119.50, they even had included the tip. I would consider blacklisting this restaurant. The individual New Century slow boiled soup is hardest to share but secure some empty bowls and you can divide the hefty portion. In the winter, there's a silkiness to the piping hot consommé that sooths a dry throat and has an umami essence infused with abalone, ginseng, and pork. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. And to be fair, the chicken was tender, and New Century certainly didn't skimp on the ginger and scallion oil. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.

If you break it down, it's actually such a good deal: the snakehead upgrade is usually +$3 each and their handcrafted drinks run around $6. No extra charge for any of that with this combo, so... why not? I got the scallion pickled cabbage fish soup (mild spice) and my friend went for the Laotan boiled fish (a bit spicier). For the snack, we picked half Taiwanese sausage and half glutinous rice cake to get both savoury and dessert vibes. When the bowls came out, they looked huge, but the portion was kinda deceiving... it's a very wide, shallow bowl, so the amount of actual soup wasn't as generous as it looked. For a fish soup restaurant, I definitely expected a deeper bowl. But the fish itself was fresh with that nice bouncy texture, plus vermicelli and a solid amount of pickled veggies. They also have a self-serve rice station with both white rice and multigrain rice. The rice cookers even have little signs showing when a new batch is cooking, which I thought was cute and convenient. Overall, flavour wise, it was solid and the promo made it worth the visit. But I am not sure if I'd come back again.

They are known for their sauerkraut fish soup that comes with unlimited self serve rice on the side. Servers were attentive, spacing of the seating and tables were tight. Often times people kept brushing up against my chair while getting up to go get their rounds of rice. Although not a deal breaker, was annoying while trying to enjoy your food. The portions are big enough for 2 if you get a large, but since it was our first time we wanted to try 2 different soups. Here's what we got: Chicken wings 4/5 - Came out raw the first time after we bit into it. But quickly flagged a server to let them know how this issue. They brought us a new one shortly after that was perfectly cooked, juicy and crispy on the outside. Laotan boiled fish with pickled cabbage and chili 4/5 - Their number one classic so we had to try. It's sour and spicy with the right amount of kick to it. Basa fish filets were also tasty. Came out luke warm. Princess's tomato fish 4/5 - Packed with tomato flavour. Savoury and paired well with the basa fish filet. Came with bean curd noodles as well. Came out luke warm. Easily would be a five star review if both soups that we got came out piping hot rather than lukewarm. Regardless, a great spot for a quick in and out meal.

Meaty pork strips coated with thin batter, each piece is wrapped in a glossy sauce and sprinkled with white sesame. Perfect dish to go with rice. Double Cooked Pork Slices: Classic Sichuan-style dish. The pork belly is first boiled, then stir-fried again with chili bean paste and green bell pepper. Very flavorful and savoury, another great dish to go with rice. Soy Sauce Fried Rice: One of my fav childhood dishes, and they delivered very well. It's such a huge portion that we could only finish it in two days. Service was great, considerate and friendly. They even pour water for you before you sit down and pack up the leftovers for you after you finish. You might have to wait if you don't have a reservation, but the turnaround is pretty fast. Wait list is old school...someone writes your name and number in a notebook and you are called when your table is ready. The interior is reminiscent of the old school taverns you see in those old Chinese movies where the traveller has spent days walking or on a horse and comes upon a tavern where the interior is all wooden tables and benches. Dining style and dishes are all family style. You order a couple of dishes and then add rice. Spice level can be adjusted and even at 'less' the heat level was high. Definitely generous use of Szechwan peppercorns! Food is very flavourful and depending on preference some might find the oil level high. The clientele is mainly Mandarin speaking and if you are Asian they will immediately communicate in Mandarin with you but I did see the staff switch to English where needed. Service was patient and attentive.
