I wish I had Congee Queen by me. I would be there every week. There's a nice variety of items on the menu ranging from dim sum to noodles to of course, congee. This place is obviously known for their congee, but they should also be recognized for their amazing roast pork. It's made fresh, and you can see it hanging in the warmer by the register. The skin was perfectly roasted with that bubbly, crackly skin (not rubbery!) and the meat was juicy, tender, and cut correctly. You'd be amazed at how many places are very lazy about their butchering, and little pieces of bone just ruin it for you. Service was good, and our waitress made sure we ordered enough for our table. This place will always be on my list when I'm back in town, and it should be on your's! read more

Reason for Visit: Didn't drop by for over a year now. Feeling some congee in a cold fall night. Menu: To be honest, this is like a slightly upgraded version of Chinese food. I do find the quality to be a tad better. I will also mention their carbs portion is huge, but unfortunately if you order a meat dish, the portions are average sized at best. I got their seafood congee- I personally think this is a better deal than their Queen congee as you are paying $1 less for pretty much same stuff.Lots of toppings! Remember the good ol' days when Congee Queen used to be THE best? Those times are long gone. Prices have been surging and quality has been diminishing. I came by over the Christmas holidays and I was so disappointed at what this place has become. Admittedly, the BBQ pork is the only item that has maintained its quality throughout the years but it took EXTRA long for them to serve it to us and we were almost done eating by the time it arrived.. Two of my family's go-to orders are the Fried Chili Turnip Patties (K53) and the House Seafood & Mixed Vegetable Fried Taiwanese Vermicelli (E4).. and they were both so poorly made at my visit. Both the vermicelli and the turnip patties had close to no flavour, and you could tell just by the turnip patties' lack of colour. We asked for them to add more sauce and give it a quick stir-fry and it took them almost 20 minutes to get it back to us. I must say though, the new menus are top-notch glamorous. It's unexpected but this is the place you need to go to if you want any sort of HK BBQ fare. Yes, I know it's not called "BBQ Queen" but the duck is always so freaking flavorful and the pork has the crispiest skin with the best flavored meat. Now the congee is also pretty awesome. There's a salty pork foot (direct translation) congee that comes with little side dish of toppings including pickles, shredded pork and nuts. Whenever I have congee I need to have an ox-tongue pastry on the side and the Congee Queen ones are also pretty good. The menu at Congee Queen is definitely extensive. You could easily be tricked into getting an interesting sounding dish that isn't exactly their specialty. I was intimidated as I made my way to Congee Queen. There were already groups of people outside waiting to get a table. Once you're in the table queue, be prepared to wait a bit. For a table of three on a Friday night, it took well over half an hour. I also found the waiting to be physically and mentally uncomfortable. It's loud, unorganized, and quite chilly at the front. Once we got a table, we noticed the utensils and cups were a bit dusty. The lighting in the restaurant is also very disappointing, they cast some unfortunate shadows on your face - this is certainly not a "picture-perfect" instagram-worthy place. But alas, this was expected from a family-style restaurant. Now... The food, however, is delicious! We ordered a number of different noodle dishes and a plate of barbecue pork. All of them were huge portions and tasted authentic. The noodles had tons of flavour and the pork was soft and tender to eat - wow! I left feeling stuffed and completely satisfied with my meal. I was craving for pork hocks and wonton noodles and so Congee Queen (皇后名粥) was the perfect place for it. It turns out that they served an amazing one! This was my first time at the Congee Queen at Highway 7 & McCowan Road. It's a big location (like most of the other locations actually) and I particularly liked how they designed the space so smartly. They installed mirrors on both sides of their restaurant so that when you are inside, the mirrors reflect the room and makes the place look double its actual size. It's such a smart way to renovate the interior! We ordered the Pork Hock Lo Mein and also the Garoupa with Bitter Melon Rice from their lunch combo. I liked that their lunch combo included a soup and a small plate of steamed vegetables too (also a spring roll). The size of garoupa fish fillets was substantial and very tasty. The pork hocks were so big in size and so juicy and tender. The lo mein was perfect too! The food came out super quickly, which I was happy with especially since I was starving on this day. My mom later ordered a bowl of plain rice noodles in soup that was to her liking as well. Since that visit, I've returned again for another meal at Congee Queen at this location. Located in a strip mall on Highway 7, we almost passed it by, but I had my eyes peeled. Smartly lined on either side with mirrors, it isn't a large restaurant, but we were able to be seated immediately. Everything we had was terrific. Service was fairly quick and it was actually very busy as well. This location is big enough to even have short wait times during busy hours. They normally keep tea at the front table so it's more convenient for them when serving customers to their tables, however it leaves the customer with warm or cold tea. We ordered salmon congee for $8.25 which is pretty pricey for congee. It's similar to any other congee as you could get from s food court. We also tried their new original fish soup (in photos). This is an imitation of deer garden restaurant. In which if this is what you're craving you're better off going to the original founding restaurant. It doesn't taste good at all. Their fish was super dry ! And the udon tastes like the frozen ones that you can buy from tnt. They also charge $11.95 which is more than deer garden. I do not recommend this item. read more

This has been our go-to restaurant when we don't want to think about what to eat and want a fast meal (rather than fast food). The atmosphere is comfortable and quite the same across all the Congee Queens.  When we went it was past 8 on Saturday and we were lucky to have a table leaving so it took a few minutes before we were sit down as the restaurant was fully occupied. Tips: making reservations beforehand if you know you're going is definitely good. For us, we didn't expect to go so we didn't make any reservations.  We normally get the congee, shrimp rice roll and dough fritter rolls along with fried rice or noodles for our family of four. It always fills us up and typically we will have something left over. As we don't normally come to this one, the quality of food seems consistent compared to our last time. Horrible, just avoid altogether! Since COVID-19, this restaurant has been really disorganized. They hardly answer the phone call and the new online ordering system is a joke. Once you've put your order through, there is no confirmation and no verification when to pick up your meal. This location has also significantly raised their prices. A lot of items have gone up in price from $11.99 to $17.99. I don't understand why the price has gone up because the quality of the food has gone down. The biggest issue is the crowds. You have 30-40 ppl waiting inside plus 12 Uber eats people. How are they allowed to stay open? This place deserves a zero star rating. One star is too good for them. read more

Congee Queen is a great place for tasty Chinese Food. My friend and I ordered Empress Fried Rice, Cantonese Chow Mein, Congee (I think Sliced Beef Congee), and Spicy Salt & Pepper Squid. It wasn't busy for a Wednesday afternoon, we were seated immediately, and were given complimentary green tea. All of our food came within a good amount of time. The Empress Fried Rice tasted really good, will most likely order it again. Cantonese Chow Mein tasted great; hard and crispy and soft, plus, all of the variety of meat, seafood, and vegetables on top. I don't regularly order congee but the Sliced Beef Congee tasted pretty good. Also, the Spicy Salt & Pepper Squid tasted great too, from what I heard, it was supposedly soggy but it wasn't for me, it was completely fine. I actually prefer the seafood bowl since the salmon works beautifully with soupy rice but my table had a seafood allergy. Congee was runny but not too runny; thick but not too thick. You get it. Content with the amount of protein in my congee. However, requires soy sauce to flavor unlike other bowls I've had. 3.5/5 Shrimp and chive rice noodle ($5.95) - best I have ever had! Such a generous helping of shrimp. I've ordered this at Congee Queen before only to have found it to be average but I guess in this case early bird gets the worm! I came here for dinner with some family and ordered a plain congee (they are afterall self-proclaimed Congee Queen), their fried squid legs, pea tips with mushroom and tofu and cod in a pot. This all came to $60 not including tip which was quite pricey. Nothing really stood out. I prefer pea tips to be stir fried. The squid was tasty but so greasy and tofu and cod pot was greasy as well. We got SICK from clams and bbq was NOT FRESH Congee queen used to be our favourite place - consistent and great price. It was our go to place because service is great and food is always decent. We went there twice in the last three weekend (august 19 and September 2) Our experiences were not great so this is for Congee Queen to fix their food before your loyal customers all Run for the hills. In august, we had our regular - bbq , noodles and fried rice. But er wanted to add the spicy clam with pepper and black bean sauce.. We wanted free range chicken and duck in our bbq combo. What we found out was that the chicken was 2.50 more but we found out about extra charge on September 2 when we ordered it. What a joke ! The worse was not the extra price but both of us ended up with diarrhea ! It happened exactly half an hour after for me and 3 hours later for my friend . My friend thought it was just my sensitive stomach but when she got it too (she is miss iron stomach), we knew it was the clams. So this is bad news! Oh September 2, we had bbq again, fuk-kin fried price and noodle . That was why we were told the free range chicken was extra. We asked for the food to be lightly salted and less oil (to ensure no diarrhea). This time the bbq duck and chicken were horrid- both chicken and duck meat were mushy which meant that they are left over and not fresh. We went there at noon time so there was no reason that they did not prepare fresh bbq food. We did share the info with Tony the manager who kindly took it off the bill. But it was a disappointment. Then came the fried rice - the name is weird but it is made of mushroom, chicken and shrimp . Again salty but we did not complain . When we also shared that the clams were bad news to tiny . He said that they stopped selling them because of the quality control of clams. So we were the victims ! But I wondered who else got sick. Congee Queen is always a great place to go if you're looking for some good Chinese food and you're in a big group. They have yet to disappoint me! The food at Congee Queen is great. Whenever I come, I literally always get the same type of order. It's usually one of their house special congees, fried rice, the sweet and sour pork, and their deep-fried calamari. I cannot recommend these items enough, and I guarantee that you'll be satisfied with it! Their cold lemon tea is also pretty legit, so if you're about that, highly recommended. Price to value-wise, it's hard to beat and it's an easy 5/5. The service isn't the best but that's okay. It's really what you would expect from a Chinese restaurant, so I don't really mind. The one thing that they do pretty well bring you the check, which is really good. Really, it's in their best interest anyway. Personally, not too much to complain about regarding the service. Also, the food comes extremely quickly! If you're coming in a large group or on a night like a weeknight or a holiday, make sure to book a table in advance (after all this COVID-19 stuff blows pass us). My fiance, his family, and I came here for an HK style brunch on our first day in Markham. The restaurant hasn't changed since the last time I was here. It's still spacious, busy, and chic decor. I must admit I was a little disappointed by this congee because it was expensive compared to the rest: $23.99 to be exact! Yes they used a real lobster for the congee, but I was really hoping it would taste like lobster. I was hoping for a lobster-like broth or flavor, but nope. Soy Sauce Pan-Fried Noodles - I started enjoying this dish a lot more because of my fiance. I love eating it whenever I have congee. Congee Queen's soy sauce pan-fried noodles were pretty good! Enough flavor for me! Minced Beef Fried Rice - The minced beef fried rice tasted really good! It definitely didn't feel like it was left over fried rice, it actually tasted like fresh rice. There are bakeries or restaurants where I have got this dim sum dish and the fritter wasn't crispy or crunchy at all, instead it would feel chewy and soggy. I'm glad the one we ordered was crunchy! Pan-Fried Minced Beef & Golden Mushroom Rice Noodle Roll - This looked similar to a scallion pancake because it was pan-fried and had a nice crunch to it. I really enjoyed this rice noodle roll compared to the other ones we had. It was delicious, savory, and amazing. We also had a roast pork over rice for my fiance's nephew since he loves roast pork very much! Overall, the brunch here wasn't so bad. I liked most of the food we had. My fiance's family came back here on our last night in Markham for dinner and they had a terrible experience. Congee Queen looked like a restaurant from Hong Kong when I first stepped in a couple years ago. They went from just one shop to two, as they bought the neighbouring store as well. A ton of people of different cultures like to eat at congee queen, because, well they're pretty delicious for decent prices. Their food is usually of the same quality and huge portions. I love the salmon or eel fried rice, you're looking at about $13 for the whole plate, but it's LARGE. Their fried turnip cake is seasoned perfectly and cut into cute squares. Another one of my favourites are the lobster with E fu noodles, the sauce, the lobster, everything is fresh but not too salty, and did I mention HUGE?! What can I say - this restaurant serves up some classic Chinese food. Stereotypical menu with tons of items to choose from ranging from congee to BBQ meats, fried rice, fried noodles and so much more! We ordered UberEats delivery from here the other day and it was pretty decent. I ordered the Fried Spicy Turnip Patties, Salt and Pepper Fried Squid, Shrimp and Chicken Fried Rice Cream and Tomato Sauce (AKA Yin Yang fried rice). It came with a free order of vegetable spring rolls because we spent more than $30. Overall the prices are quite high... $20.50 for fried rice is a little absurd but it did feed 2 people and we had some leftovers. All of the fried dishes were a little oilier than I had liked but still delicious. They gave a generous portion of turnip patties which I definitely appreciated considering this was my favourite dish we ordered. The sauces for the fried rice lacked flavour and I've definitely had it taste better from other restaurants. I've been to a few of their locations now and my experience has all been very similar - fast, efficient service with good, satisfying food. I've always ordered the same items despite wanting to try other things on their extensive menu but my go-to dishes are just too good to trade out. Empress Eel Fried Rice ($13.50) - My absolute favourite although not cheap. Eel, fish roe, crab meat and bonito flakes. Such an awesome combination especially with the eel sauce and I like that it's not too salty. I wish they'd add more eel but perhaps that's just me being greedy. Fried Chilli Turnip Patties ($7.50) - After my first time trying the turnip patties here, I've tried ordering it at many Chinese restaurants to only be met with disappointment. It has a bit of a kick to it but SO tasty. The turnip patties here are like no other and I'd highly recommend having it with a bowl of congee. Yum. Salt & Pepper Squid ($9.50) - A very popular, safe item and rightfully so due to its versatility. It goes well with pretty much any rice, noodle or congee that you could order. Some people have mentioned that it often comes out soggy but luckily, I've never encountered it. Dough Fritter Rice Noodle Roll ($4.75) - So simple yet so good. The rice noodle is very thin so it doesn't overshadow the dough fritter. The sauce to dip adds the perfect flavour and completes the dish. They open late, food comes out quick, portions are solid. Once seated it was even harder to move around as tables were side by side so your chair was touching someone else's and occasionally would butt heads as they were all round tables later out in the middle of the room. (Unless you are a smaller group booths aren't bad) After ordering it only got more chaotic from there. Trying to look for someone to help isn't helpful as we kept waving people down and they either ignored it or tried passing to another worker who was too busy to pay attention. When trying to inquire about missing food we were questioned if we even ordered it as they couldn't go and check since they were busy and not the person that we ordered with. The food wasn't bad but was hoping for more service especially since we were there for a celebration. When I say I go to Markham for the food, I'm usually thinking of Congee Queen! All my fave sinful cravings under one roof! Location Close to Markville, along Highway 7, east of McCowan. Large dining space that is always full! Modern and fairly clean decor and area. Private dining room available, which also doubles as a "family room" -- where they stick groups with young kids (that's us...) Service We didn't make reservations, but were seated quite promptly despite being busy. Turnover is quick, service is quick. Food Seriously, I can skip the above 2 criteria and go straight to this and hand over the 5. You know why you're here: +++ crunchy, crispy turnip cakes +++ house special seafood congee +++ wonton soup ++ salt and pepper squid ++ seafood chow mein +++ golden milk pudding This is a family favorite, and will continue to be a must-do when we're visiting relatives in TDot.
