Incredible food, atmosphere and staff. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes. We will definitely visit often, it's great to find a new place that offers the best of the best! Check out the old vending machine for local art as well. Mary and Mark also added charm to our Easter lunch. See you all soon! :)

I was so excited to try Compère Lapin because I love Nina Compton ever since I saw her in the New Orleans season of Top Chef. When a group of friends and I were in The Big Easy, we definitely made a reservation to dine at Compère Lapin! The food was fantastic, as expected, but our service was a little lacking, unfortunately. Our server was not very friendly, forgot to fulfill my last drink order, looked at me like I was crazy when I asked her to explain what one of the desserts was composed of, and then argued with us about splitting the check. So aside from the lackluster service, as I said - the food was definitely on point, so that did redeem the visit, mostly. We were there for brunch so they did not have a set 3-course menu or anything, but we sort of created that ourselves. I started with the Smoked Fish Dip and it was fantastic. Smoky, as the name implies, and just the right amount of salty. The dip came with tostones (fried plantains), for dipping, and they went so well with the dip. Definitely try this out if you are getting a starter! For my main dish, since we were there at brunch, I picked the Croque Madame. It was, as my friend put it, "cartoonishly large" (but not in a bad way, in an awesome way). Ham and egg and one of my favorite things - pimento cheese! Yum. For a dessert, I got the Mango Creme Brûlée, and it was delish. I am normally used to creme brûlée having a creamy, almost coffee flavor, so trying this fruity one was awesome. Same great caramelized topping, but with a mixture of sweet/tart berry fruits and creamy fruit pudding-like filling. So tasty. Compère Lapin is located in the Old No. 77 Hotel, so it carries some of that same style with it into the restaurant. Cool leather touches, brick walls, and wood features. Compère Lapin means "brother rabbit" in French, and that is also worked into the decor with lots of little rabbit touches - cute! The second issue with the service was that we requested separate checks. We specifically checked beforehand on their site that we could do that so nobody had to put everyone's (not inexpensive) bill all on their one card. We asked our server to split the bill when it came, and she said "we don't do that for groups" in a snippety way (we were 5 people), and we mentioned that, on their website, it says they don't split checks for group over six, which we were under. She went back to check with the manager, and did end up splitting it, but her attitude from the beginning to the end kind of put a damper on the whole experience. Right over the very impressive blue/wood bar at the entrance of Compère Lapin, is chef Nina Compton's James Beard Award. And that is very deserved, don't get me wrong at all with my review. The food was absolutely fantastic. I just wish the service had matched that level of greatness!

This is an older review from when I visited during Black History Month some years ago for a four-course dinner. It was my first time going, and both the food and service were great. Each course was uniquely prepared with thoughtful pairings that complemented one another really well. Revisiting this post is a reminder that I definitely need to go back and try more items on the menu. It's a cute spot for date night or a night out with friends.

I love the TV Show Top Chef. So whenever I travel to a bigger city I always look to see if a former contestant has restaurants. It's been a while since I have been in New Orleans and I knew when I went back I wanted to check out Nina Compton's food. Mix of Carribean and Creole cuisine. Turns out Compere Lapin was next door to our hotel, so it was meant to be. I was able to easily make a reservation using Open Table. They do require a credit card on file and will charge you $25 if you no show. I knew we were showing up so didn't mind the formality! Cocktails to start. I'm a sucker for a wine and liquor concoction so ran with the Lucian's Gold (rum, lillet, lemon, mint, liquor 43, and sparkling wine). Nice and refreshing. There were four of us dining and we all had different opinions on which small bites/ starters to order, so we ended up with all of them! Not complaining. The Jalapeño & Scallion Hushpuppies with a cilantro creama were crispy outside and soft inside. The Blackened Pork Ears with a smoked aioli had nice crunch. But dude the Buttermilk Biscuits with honey butter and bacon butter. Wow. The biscuits were the winner for me. Perfectly executed, soft inside, a little crispy on the outside, and both of the butters were so flavorful velvety. I mean bacon butter? Note there's only two biscuits per order. For main meal we decided to order the COOLinary 2025 Prix Fix Dinner which was a 3 course offering of one of the included first, second, and dessert items for $55 a person. This actually was a pretty incredible deal as a the majority of the menu options were part of the deal and the portions were pretty close in size to the regular entrees that cost $30+ on their own. If you are a foodie like me and like to try a bunch of delicious things do this. My husband and I both did and ordered different items so we got to try 6 dishes. My first dish was a fish selection of so kind but sadly can't recall exactly what it was and is not currently still on the menu. I do recall it being very tasty and light which was needed with so much food. If the Jerk Pork Belly (with plantain crema and tamarind jus) is available get that, that's one of the best pork bellies I've ever had and loved the jerk preparation, so flavorful. For our second course, we got the Fried chicken (with jerk honey butter, coconut grits and peanuts). This was a huge piece of chicken and it was fried to perfection. Nice crunch from the skin and peanuts. The grits were silky smooth. The Semolina Dumplings with gulf shrimp (run down sauce, and soft herbs) was also stealer. Soft dumplings and great sauce. For dessert I ordered the Mango Creme Brulee with coconut and berries. Full disclosure I don't like shaved coconut, but it was a pretty mild application thank goodness. The mango flavor really shined. The sugar was perfectly brûléed providing a nice top layer to crack into. My husband got the Bread pudding with apple curd and banana. I was pretty full by this point but it was flavorful, warm, and yummy. That comforting feeling you want from a bread pudding. Compere Lapin was everything I wanted it to be. I left way too full, and in a bit of a hurry as we had to get to a ghost tour, but amazing meal and great service. I heard that Nina was there cooking that night, but sadly didn't get to see her. That would have been amazing but regardless she is a Top Chef finalist for a reason, as she executed everything I ate to perfection!

The service at the bar was great, and the bartender made great drinks. Ordered the biscuits to start & was kinda disappointed. They were dry and it was "just a biscuit" nothing to get again. The star of the show was the chicken that was perfectly cooked alongside the corn grits. Would come back just for that.

Came here with friends to celebrate our college reunion! Good: - The dishes were all unique - I liked the fried catfish and the pork belly was really savory and the cornbread was much better with the sweet and savory butters - The ambiance was nice, it was very dark and hard to see inside Bad: - Pretty expensive and each dish is a little small - It takes forever for the dishes to come out and hard to wave down the staff, even though we already told them that we were in a rush Overall this place was a fancy upscale place and the fanciest that we went to during the trip, but also it was a bit too pricey to go again

An excellent meal. I ate at the bar, and the bartenders were nice and helpful. I got a glass of wine, cocktail, and the fish collar and the curried goat. The fish collar was solid, but the curried goat was just incredible - I get why they said they can't take it off the menu. Definitely was a somewhat more expensive meal, but it was worth the price.

Overall, my visit was just okay. I'd been wanting to try this spot for a while to show support, but I left feeling underwhelmed... The highlights: * Ambiance & vibe at the bar * Art & decor throughout the space * Pork belly * Oxtail empanadas * Cocktails The just-okay parts: * Service: While our server was kind, she forgot items we ordered three different times. A few things never arrived, and we also received dishes we didn't order. She also only checked on us once... * Biscuits: Pretty good! The texture was great when hot, especially with the honey butter (wasn't a fan of the bacon butter). * Snapper: The skin was perfectly crispy and flavorful, but unfortunately, the fish itself was overcooked and dry, which was disappointing. * Espresso: Severely under-extracted, overly bitter, and hard to drink. Overall rating: ~3-3.5/5 I'm glad I finally tried it out, but I don't see myself coming back. That said, it honestly feels like it might've just been an off night... I'd heard such good things about this place and saw the strong ratings, so maybe my experience wasn't the norm.

We arrived close to 10. As soon as we sat down, asked what time they closed as we didn't want to be THOSE people that place orders at closing. The bartender said the restaurant closes at 10 but the bar stays open later if they have people, which they did and she asked us if we wanted a drink. Based on the number of people at the bar, i'd figured they'd be open at least an hour. We ordered our drinks and they made them pretty quickly. My drink, fiesta de elote was refreshing but my wife's and son's drink, the watermelon fresca, not so much, like it needed something as it wasn't as refreshing. I finished mine pretty quickly and waited for any of the 3 servers to offer me another drink or offer us some water. Nope. Never happened. If fact, it just seemed like they weren't interested as they seemed to be in a hurry to put glasses up, closing for the night i presume. It would've been nice to know the bar would've been closing after that one drink. It would've been better to just let us know they were closing so we wouldn't have ordered. Their communication was lacking as when i sat down, the other bartender had asked me if was going to order something from the kitchen. When i said I'd like to order a snack, she said they were only open for the restaurant part and if you had a reservation only. She should've just said that from the get go instead of going through and explanation after asking me if I was going to order food Nice place but this experience wasn't great

Delicious crispy whole branzino, great crispy blackened pig ears, nice ceviche, but plain and somewhat disappointing scallop and shrimp pasta. Nice mocktail. Great chocolate dessert with citrus ice cream. Friendly service! We came here to celebrate our anniversary, and our wonderful waitress treated us to two flutes of champagne. Good ambiance with ok level of noise and music. The maitre-d was unprofessional because she totally forgot about us. She told us to have a seat and wait. We waited. Everyone got seated but us. We had to practically go up to ask her about it. Turns out she totally forgot about us despite us arriving early and checking in properly. In the end I still give them 5 stars due to food quality and that waitress.

I have to admit - I had great expectations for this restaurant, and my cousin and I debated for a month on how to fit it into our very busy schedule while she is/was her on vacation. Saw the write up in Gambit Weekly April 14-20 on the Chef Nina Compton & we were stoked. Food was good; service missed the mark. Arrived on time for our 6:30P Sunday night reservation. It was our last meal together for this trip and we were seated at chair/table/bench set up against the wall; no tablecloth. Cousin had the Garden Party NA ($10) and I had the NA Sorrel Tea (Hibiscus) ($8). Both were good, though I found myself pouring water into my tea because it was very sweet. Water was poured and slightly spilled on the table and not wiped up. At this point, lack of tablecloth is an issue because now there is water AND condensation from our drinks pooling on the table. The only option I had was to blot the worst with my fabric napkin. It took a while for our food order to be placed, though we had been ready. Jalapeno Hushpuppies ($6) were brought by a food runner about 7:10P. They had great flavor and the accompanying cilantro crema was nice, but about 10 more seconds would have improved the texture in the middle. Tuna Ceviche with coconut, lime and jerk peanuts ($17) arrived about 10 minutes later. At this point our server returned to take my cousin's order for a second drink. Did I mention the table was wet? The ceviche was very nice, though almost overpowered by the sauce. Our main meals arrived around 7:35P via food runner. Cousin's Grilled Snapper was a nice, one-person size and well-seasoned. I ordered the signature Goat Curry with sweet potato gnocchi and cashews. It was delightful, tender, lots of food and lots of gravy. We finished and waited for some time for someone to clear plates - a pattern throughout the meal - and even longer for our server to return so we could ask for the check. It appears she had a large party, and the manager was looking on, but did not step in to assist, not even when we finally put our credit card on the edge of the table with the check. We were going to order dessert but at this point we had been there 1.5 hrs and still had to walk to our car in a parking lot before our time expired, so we skipped it. If you're going to require a credit card for reservations, tout yourself as an upscale restaurant and charge $38 for an entree, please wipe the table and please don't make the time between courses stretch on. I understand this is not a fast-food restaurant, but I also understand some things could have been done to make this a 5-star review instead of a three.

Delicious! This is a hidden gem on the less traveled side off Canal St. The food was very good. I especially enjoyed the papaya salad and crudo. As an entree, I had the market fish, which was well cooked and had good flavor. I tried a friend's fried chicken dish - it was pretty good. The cocktails were good as well. The service and ambiance are both 4 stars; not necessarily noteworthy - the restaurant is medium-sized and had a few open tables on a Thursday evening, but other colleagues could not get a table on a weekend evening.

She was a bit chatty but still nice. The menu wasn't extensive at all. The waitress did a good job at selling many of the menu options. I initially had the chicken with carrots and brussel sprouts. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and flavored well. The chicken however was very dry. When the waitress asked how it was, I told her how dry it was and she immediately bright me something else, which was the fish and chips. The fish was hot, crispy, and cooked to perfection. It was tender, however it lacked flavor and seasoning. I asked for hot sauce but never received it. I finally decided to ask for a to go box to take the remaining piece home. The chips "fries" were great. They were freshly cut real potato fries. They were hot and seasoned well. My significant other had the shrimp and grits which he thoroughly enjoyed. As an appetizer we had the salad. Seemed simple and basic enough but was actually very good. I'm unsure of the dressing it was tossed in but it was just enough and well flavored. I'd previously sampled great bites from Chef/Owner Justin Devillier (2016 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef: South) at a guest dinner in Charleston, as well as from Exec Chef Joseph Tiedmann at a Farm Dinner in West Palm Beach. But this was my first visit to "the mother ship", housed in a historic century-old building. I decided to start with the Fried Gulf Oysters - Sofrito Purée, Chowchow & Pickled Sweet Peppers, and was glad I did. There's no shortage of oyster dishes in NOLA, and this was a big winner. Next up, when in the South, why not order Fried Green Tomatoes - Burrata, Country Ham & Oregano? Another terrific plate, perhaps the best FGT dish I've had! Finally, my "target dish" arrived, the Shrimp & Okra Gumbo with Andouille, Collard Greens & Popcorn Rice. Really, really good. Very dark roux, as I like, and with plenty of seafood flavor, but more depth as well. Definitely one of the best gumbos I've ever enjoyed. I was happy to visit La Petite Grocery at lunch, where they offer up the full menu available for dinner too, of course. Highly recommended, and I can't wait to return to try much much more.

It tastes like regular bolognese. I like the egg, great addition to the dish. Blue crab beignets only comes with 3 in the serving and it's small but it's worth it. It taste soooo good. I'm so glad I got to try this restaurant. Put this place on your list to try!!

My group and I came to chemin à la mer on a Monday at around 8:30 and got sat right away. The…read morerestaurant was practically empty, except for a couple of businessmen who looked like they planned a dinner and meeting combo, lol. But that on top of the emptiness makes sense with the location, hotel, day and time. Pam took care of us and was a joy as our server. She knew the menu very well and was able to answer all our questions on top of being helpful and productive throughout our visit. We had the skirt steak and king Salmon with a side of fries and stuffed potatoes. The skirt steak was cooked to medium and it was amazingg! Pam asked how I'd like it cooked and suggested it to be cooked at medium rare. I couldn't do that since I'm barely starting to get used to my steaks being cooked at medium, but it was still absolutely delicious. The sauce that was glazed on top, as well as the seasoning of the steak killed it!! The salmon was also delicious. Very flavorful. The stuffed potatoes were ok, we liked their side of fries more than that. Drinks were tasty and refreshing. Worth the price. We also got dessert, a chocolate cake and apple pie. I wasn't expecting to like the apple pie, but wow was that good! And the chocolate cake isn't just any boring cake. Once you break the cake, a chocolaty liquid melts out onto your plate, it was perfection. The restaurant itself is beautiful. They're located on the 14th (if I'm not mistaken) floor and have the best location for beautiful views of downtown New Orleans and the waterfront. I'm still thinking about that special sauce on the skirt steak (heart eyes). Thank u for a wonderful dinner!

Very disappointed on several fronts. Came in on a Saturday night at 6:15. Was a bit surprised…read morethat this was the only nice steak house I could get a reservation for the day of, and had my choice of times. In spite of the Yelp ratings, that should have been a huge red flag. Ordered the Old Fashioned from the menu that was very good. Tried to find a bottle of Cabernet for under $150. There were none and only one cab by the glass at $30, so we opted for that (that same bottle sold for $165...math doesn't add up). The menu does not have a lot of variety. No garden salad, so I started with the gumbo. It was good, but would have been better with some bread. We each ordered the ribeye medium with a side of mushrooms and a twice baked potato. The sides were excellent, but the steak was over cooked. To make matters worse, our server was not paying attention so I had to ask another to have our server or a manager come over. The manager came by and promptly took both steaks away to have them remade and comped us another glass of wine. Nice gesture. However, the second steaks were no better than the first. I asked the manager if he really considered what we were looking at to be medium. He assured me it was and held the table light by the steak so I could see it better. You can see by the picture of the second steaks that it was not cooked right either. When the check came, they comped one of the steaks, but not both. Not sure what their logic was, as neither of us ate much of either. Told the server the same and Mr. Manager came back over with both comped. Apparently they were trying to get every red cent out of the few people in the joint!

HORRENDOUS EXPERIENCE from the service to the wait and even down to the food. If you want to write…read morea book on how not to run a restaurant, start your thesis here. Trying to make a reservation here is like breaking into Fort Knox, nobody answers the phone and when we finally did get a res two weeks out, they MOVED the res ONE HOUR before we were set to arrive. When we arrived the place actually looked very nice and the hostess was helpful in getting us seated, and those were the last moments of happiness we would experience over the next 2 hours. We ordered bottomless mimosas for around 6/10 people in our party. Every single time our bottle of champagne ran out we had to either ask for more or get up and walk over to the bar to request it. When we finally did order our food we were pretty excited, but little did we know we would have enough time to walk down to the morning parades and catch some beads before it would actually come out. From ordering to when our food arrived was a total of 1.5 HOURS. We were 5 minutes away from just walking out. You would think "wow, this food took so long to arrive! It must be good!" WRONG. They spent the hour and a half making our food to turn our order of french toast into a two sided coin, one side normal looking, the other black as coal. Ahh, who needs the hour and a half long wait for their french toast when you can have the duck and waffles, right? And then they brought us a plate of one waffle and a single duck leg for $30. At this point we started looking around for cameras because we thought we were being pranked. Not a single person in our 10 person party (and that's a lot of chances) found this place even remotely close to mediocre. Others had their chicken sandwiches arrive cold, salads arrive bad, and come on how do you mess a salad up? The worst part was seeing a couple get up and walk out from the wait and realizing we were the poor bastards that stayed. It's a shame because the spot itself looks nice, but I guess if you paint s**t pink, it's still s**t. Don't come here.

This wasn't just a tasting. It was a carefully composed symphony, where each course played like a perfect melody on the tongue. The layers, the depth, the passion, they all unfolded so intentionally, like the chefs weren't just cooking, but telling a story. Every bite was an emotion. Every plate, a brushstroke of creativity and care. From the first sip to the bar snacks, to the final sweet notes, I was captivated. Each course flowed effortlessly into the next, building and surprising without ever overwhelming. It was playful. It was elegant. It was grounded yet daring. What I appreciated most was how personal it all felt. This wasn't about showmanship, but it was about sharing something meaningful. You could taste the reverence for ingredients and the pride in craftsmanship in every.single.bite. To the team at Saint Germain: thank you for the opportunity to experience something so rare, so memorable, so full of heart. I walked away nourished in every sense of the word. This experience is for people who appreciate culinary magic...(and don't mind spending an extra $50 to have shaved truffles cover your dish).
