Gumbo Dumplings
Scott P.

I sat at the bar on a Monday lunch in June and had a great meal. The bartender, though busy, was very attentive and delivered excellent service. The bourbon / sake / green tea cocktail she made me (I believe dubbed the "Seoul Smash") was incredibly tasty, and kicked off the meal just right. I had been told I had to try the Gumbo Soup Dumplings, and I'm sure glad I did. The broth was a total umami bomb, and the filling and pasta were great -- perhaps slightly not as al dente as I prefer, but still done very well. After eating all* the dumplings myself, I settled on some lighter fare with the house made kimchi and a side of fried rice. I'm a fried rice snob, and theirs was great. The kimchi was a great accompaniment. I definitely recommend stopping by here for tasty modern Asian fare.

This spot is located in the heart of New Orleans has good food. It has a nice ambiance. There was a great "community" vibe. The waitress' service was "very attentive" to my husband. *side eye I shielded our kids from the BS & the 18% gratuity but it was an overall a positive expensive experience. And the military discount is only 10% & NOT for the whole meal!!!

Ambiance is great, nice vibes. Wonderful service. The gumbo dumplings were a little too salty and the bbq pork was nice but nothing spectacular. Same with the beef bulgogi and the salmon. Nothing different from anything I've had before. Dependable food with nice vibes (although the music is a little too loud) and the service was good. But I don't think we'll be coming back bc while the food was decent, it wasn't anything we hadn't already had. Not sure why there is always a long wait for this place but we managed to get in and I'm glad we did. But it just wasn't so good that a return visit is necessary. Maybe for someone else, this place is amazing but not so for us.

Gumbo dumplings 8/10

The gumbo dumplings were amazing. I cannot say enough good things about the food. Service leaves a lot to be desired. The staff aren't rude they're just not polite. Only place in New Orleans I experienced bad service. I've been to over 20 restaurants in and around the city. It's darkly lit so I would recommend for a date night, but the service needs improvement. The bulgogi took a long time to come out make 35 minutes to the kitchens credit it was hot. The two dishes below were nearly $60 before tip. They did have touchless pay so that was nice.

Love this food fusion. Dumplings are a must. We had the gumbo dumplings and wished we would have also ordered the etoufee ones but we were so full. The seafood ramen was so good. Yum yum ribs with rice were very delicious. Server was great even though the place was quite busy. Only complaint was the restrooms. Once you turn the corner you are hit with a most pungent old Clorox beach towels/vomit smell. It was so bad and glad I didnt use the restrooms until the end. Not sure what that was about.

Rating: 10/10 It took me 2 days to process the dining experience I had at Sun Chong. As a sister restaurant of Morrows (when you step inside, you can tell), they have a blueprint of how to have great food, ambience and still remain very authentic. Having lived in South Korea for a few years, it is one of my favorite cuisines. I was excited to try this fusion of cultures! The menu is extensive, I ended up trying a few different small plates. I ordered the gumbo dumplings, crawfish fried rice, roasted Brussels, hot wonton dip. It was all damn delicious! I will be back because I still have so many things to try, especially the Kimchi Lobster Pasta lol I recommend to make a reservation to make sure you get right on in.

Pork Baco - red one was the best!

For me, the food was a 3; service bumped it to a 4. I'm glad I tried it but I wouldn't rush back. Started off with drinks which felt slightly high in price ($18 ea) but I chalked it up to location. My friend (male) got an "I love you" drink and the server first made sure he knew it was ver sweet and 2nd asked if he wanted it in the heart glass or a "normal" one which we appreciated. We started off with the gumbo soup dumplings, which were good and presented well. We also had some kind of meat, taco looking thing and the meat in one was definitely the winner. For mains we did the bulgogi. Meat was good. Rice was NOT sticky and was sadly dry and barely edible. The salad was on the small side which is fine but just didn't feel truly "sharable." Server checked back in multiple times and got us to go cups when we were ready and overall she was very sweet and engaging which was nice since my friend was visiting.

I was visiting New Orleans and was missing some Asian food, so my friend and I found this restaurant on Yelp which had amazing reviews, so we had to check it out ourselves. We were starving when we arrived, and with our luck, the service that day was not the best. It took a while for them to take our order, bring the food/drinks, and the check to pay. Our server did end up acknowledging and apologizing for the service. We split the galbi which came with a side of rice and salad. The galbi was kind of salty, but definitely flavorful. I also tried the drink "i love you" which was in a heart shaped glass and tasted fruity. If you are in the area and are craving Asian food, the food is actually delicious. Although we did not try a lot of their items, they have some unique items on their menu.

Oowa and Kierra were absolutely amazing! Their customer service was exceptional, and they were so accommodating even though they were incredibly busy. We visited on the Fourth of July during Essence Festival weekend, so the restaurant was packed, but they never missed a beat. The food was delicious, and the drinks were even better! I'm so glad we decided to stop by. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish. 10/10 -- highly recommend!

Everything here is so so flavorful! We tried 2 of the seasonal drinks, the gumbo dumplings, crawfish poboy, redfish poboy, and spicy pork bacos. I really love the yum yum sauce on the poboys. The dumplings have a nice kick to them, and all of the cocktails were yummy but pricey. It was not easy to find parking in the area since it's in the French Quarter so definitely keep that in mind. Service is good, everyone is very nice. Nice ambiance, be sure to set a reservation.

Gigi is amazing!!! Interacts well with the staff who sit at the bar.

We were walking around looking for a place to grab food and cocktails. While looking online, we saw this pop up and diverted from original restaurant. I am so glad we did. When I say everything was good. Gigi was behind that bar mixing like her life depended on it. Lol We love this history behind the restaurant. The blending of Korean and Creole flavors really works here. The place was very lively and has hip hop tunes playing in the background. The neon signs give tribute to the history. The service was great as the staff were very friendly. Food pictured: Cocktails: Dragonfruit lemon drop and a passion fruit lemon drop Shot: Green tea shot Food: Spicy Seafood Ramen, Neno Friend Chicken w/ crawfish fried rice and Gumbo Soup Dumplings Prices are reasonable and match the portion sizes. Many of the dishes are sized for sharing. I definitely plan to make this a staple during visits.

We came here right before we left NOLA. It was BUSY!!! But it's expected in the area, again it's NOLA so it's always busy. We got sat down pretty quick because we decided to eat at the bar. Our bartender/ waitress was so sweet and she was WORKING!! Getting the drinks out, taking down orders all that! She was amazing! Super attentive despite how busy she was. She took her time to explain some of the drinks she was making which was thoughtful! We were just curious watching her make all these different drinks. The food was great! The gumbo soup dumplings were out of this world! The chicken salad was that a chicken salad nothing stood out and then the bulgolgi po boy? Fire! We'll definitely come back to this spot when we visit.

**sigh** this is still one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in New Orleans! The food is consistently amazing, the service is always spectacular, and no matter what time of day you visit, you're guaranteed to have an incredible experience. The vibe here is a relaxing and laid-back, that makes you want to sit back and unwind. It's one of those places that never disappoints and keeps you coming back for more.

We were promptly seated as soon as they opened. They turned on the warmer at our table and we placed our beverage orders. They explained how we would order from the tablet which was very easy. You order and within a few short minutes it is delivered to your table. We tried a little bit of everything and left happy and stuffed! Please come hungry because you will want to try everything. After I was diagnosed with Gluten Intolerance as a foodie I thought my culinary life was over and one of the many, but not only joys, of going to Nola is the food. I was reluctant to go and then a bit later 20 years ago Katrina hit this great city. When I did return my reluctance of going due to my food restrictions was born out, but the fact that the people in New Orleans fry everything, including water. Besides jambalaya and some fresh fish, I couldn't eat anything. However, due to a friend who was born in New Orleans, grew up in New Orleans and lives half of the year there with her family involved in the restaurant business, Pat introduced me for a number of chefs and one in particular, Michael Gulotta, who modified dishes or even made me specially dishes that were gluten free. Every time I went to New Orleans, I tried to go to his two Vietnamese Cajun restaurants, MoPho and Maypop. Michael Gulotta, chef-owner at Mopho and Maypop was born and raised in New Orleans. Michael began cooking in local restaurants at a young age. After graduating from the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute, he joined the newly opened Restaurant August. Gulotta then took leave to train in the Italian Riviera and Germany's Black Forest. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Michael returned home to help rebuild and assist with August's re-opening. He was named chef de cuisine in 2007 and led the award-winning kitchen for six years, while establishing relationships with local farmers and purveyors. He opened his first restaurant, MOPHO, in January of 2014 with his brother, Jeffrey Gulotta, and high-school friend, Jeffrey Bybee. Located in New Orleans' Mid City, MOPHO was a true neighborhood restaurant and a destination for Southeast Asian inspired cuisine utilizing the Louisiana pantry. In its first year MOPHO was nominated for America's Best New Restaurant by Bon Appétit magazine and named Restaurant of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. In 2016 Michael was named one of Top 30 Chefs to Watch in the nation by Plate Magazine, A New Orleans Rising Star by Starchefs, a Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine, and Chef of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. In 2017, his team opened its second full-service restaurant, Maypop, in the Central Business District of New Orleans. Maypop was named a Top 5 Best New Restaurant by The Times Picayune, A Best New Restaurant by New Orleans Magazine, a New Orleans Top 20 Restaurants by Condé Nast Traveler, and a New Orleans' Top Ten Restaurants for 2019, by Brett Anderson. Michael has also been a semifinalist for The James Beard Awards Best Chef South for the past four years. Most recently, his team opened a second MOPHO location in the new Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. On my trip to New Orleans this past May, I was saddened to learn that Michael was closing MoPho and Maypop, casualties of the so difficult business of owning a restaurant I know all too well. After JazzFest one evening on MoPho's second to last day, Pat and I went to pay our respects and I got to thank Michael for his kindness showing me there was culinary life after my diagnosis not only at his restaurant but when he catered the main stage at JazzFest, but he also introduced me to more fusion possibilities which I have incorporated in some of the food I make. On the last day of Maypop, my brother Jeff and I dined at Maypop, Michael's more upscale joint which served delicious food and not to be undone, after both closed on that Sunday in May, I saw the MoPho at the airport right in front of my terminal to fly home and I got the greatest wings on the planet to fly home with: CRISPY CHICKEN WINGS WITH NUOC MAM CARAMEL. I have no idea what exactly that is except Cajun chicken spices with a Vietnamese caramel sauce that is unparalleled in it's flavor, bite and marriage of cultures that was so good Pat would always ask for more on the side. I'm sure Michael will get back in the game at some point but I write this with gratitude to Pat for introducing me to this great Chef and to Chef Gulotta for taking the time to show me what I could eat and what modifications he could make to his food for me.
