OVERALL: 6.7/10 (Yelp Converted Score: 3.35/5). Advice: It's nice for a night out, but don't set your expectations too high.
My partner and I had a reservation for 2 at 7pm on Sunday, April 11th, 2021. We showed up around 20 minutes before our reservation and were seated within five minutes of showing up, albeit not at the original type of table we'd requested (near the window, since I booked over a week in advance via OpenTable). We didn't know it at the time, but COMO was participating in the Spring 2021 edition of Seattle Restaurant Week, so we ended up ordering our meal off of the Dinner menu, and then ordered two cocktail drinks on top of that.
1) VARIETY/SELECTION: 7/10. There four main "sections" of the dinner menu:
Antipasti, pizze, primi, and secondi. Each have between 3 and 10 options on them, varying in price from $12 (Zuppa) to $45 (Kobe NY Strip). The cocktail menu has 9 options on it, but the wine list actually has more options than the food menu (it's a full page of options).
2) FRESHNESS: 8/10. The zuppa was warm, and tasted freshly made; the rainbow beets were definitely a highlight. The main dishes were the stars of the show - the pappardelle was moist but firm, and had a great texture. The vermicelli was full of flavour, and the cherry tomatoes felt fresh.
The ice cream was partially melted when it got to the table (sadlife), but both the crostata and tiramisu tasted authentic.
3) VALUE FOR MONEY: 8.5/10. We ordered our three main courses from the Seattle Restaurant Week (Spring 2021) dinner menu ($35 each), which included:
Antipasti
- ZUPPA - ZUCCHINI, CRISPY COPPA, MASCARPONE
- RAINBOW BEETS - RICOTTA, TOASTED PISTACHIO
Primi:
- PAPPARDELLE - WILD BOAR RAGU, CALABRIA CHILI
- SQUID INK VERMICELLI - GAMBERI, PRESERVED CHERRY TOMATO
Dolci:
- TIRAMISU
- CROSTATA DI PERE - PASTRY, ALMOND CREAM, PEAR
In addition, we ordered two cocktails from the drinks menu:
- Jim's Pimm ($13) - PIMM'S, MINT, STRAWBERRY SHRUB, GOSLING'S GINGER BEER
- Harry's Bellini ($12) - Giffard Peach Liqueur, Peach Puree, Prosecco
Decent portion sizes for the mains, especially considering the value of SRWeek prices. The appetizer courses were a bit small (compared to the regular menu), but it made sense given the three-course nature of the meal. I had eaten a fairly large lunch beforehand, but if I hadn't, I don't think I would have been satiated or full after the SRWeek portions. I'm unable to comment on the normal dinner menu as we did not order anything from there.
4) SERVICE: 6/10. I had some red flags in my overall impressions of this place (next section), but this section is entirely commenting about the service / dining experience. Given that we're still amidst a global pandemic, I found it concerning that the tables were way too close together; within six feet, which was the recommended distance for social distancing as per the CDC. Worse yet, it didn't seem like the restaurant was following the less-than-50% indoor dining guidelines at all - every table and seat was filled, everywhere I looked.
The timing between when we received our initial drinks order and when we were able to order our food was roughly 20 minutes - which is way too long, unless you're understaffed. What disappointed me here was that the waiter taking our order had no idea that SRWeek was going on, so he literally walked away WITH MY PHONE while he "went to check with management" as to whether or not they were able to honour it (didn't even asked, just took my phone and walked off). I thought I was getting "punk'd" for a few seconds, but when he finally started walking back I realized **he was being serious**. My conclusion: The wait staff doesn't know the menu or specials.
5) CONSISTENCY / FIRST IMPRESSION: 6/10. I found certain things inconsistent with my experience, even compared to those tables directly adjacent to me. Both of these detracted from the overall experience, hence the rating.
Firstly, we were seated and ordered before 7pm, yet we never received our first dish until 7:15pm. Meanwhile, the two tables directly to my right (of two people, each table) were seated at 7pm, and ordered, but received their full order before 7:15pm. They had a different server, which may have played into it, but it was still quite confusing to see their main courses come out (after their appetizers had been served, eaten, and taken away), when our appetizer hadn't even been made yet.
Secondly, there were three options available for reservations on OpenTable:
"standard seating", "high-top seating", and "outdoor seating". I booked "high-top seating" over a week in advance, since the pictures had shown "high-top" to be adjacent to the windows, which had the best view of the sunset. When I arrived, the host at the door claimed those didn't matter - and we got whatever was available. So what the hell was the online reservation system even for? Why are there three "options" that don't actually make a difference for customers to pick? read more
