I just moved from Arlington to Charlotte. Commonwealth Movers showed up 20 minutes early with 5 guys. In 2 hours they had completely emptied my apartment. Three guys drove to Charlotte. For the unload they were again 20 minutes early and completely emptied the truck in 2 hours. I was very impressed with their efficiency and professionalism. We utilized this company for a very short move in No. VA over two years ago and had no issues. The Lead Driver was a different person and good. Earlier this year we had the same type of move, but with a different Lead Driver by the name of Lionel. I watched him damage one item and then potentially damage a super high-value item due to his reckless moving skills. I was told by him and his crew to file a claim. When I dealt with the owner about these issues, he became condescending when discussing the circumstances. He replaced the damaged item, but it was not effortless on our part. Glad we insured the move for a good amount of money or there is no telling what the final outcome would have been. read more

Kevin came to our house to discuss our needs and prepare an estimate. We asked for full-service packing and a split shipment (sending some items to our son in eastern MA). The team of Javier, Miguel and Ishmael handled everything flawlessly! They were fast, efficient and friendly through the whole process of packing, loading and unloading. They were able to pack and load our three-bedroom condo in a single day, and everything arrived in great condition. We are sad to report that we had a very disappointing experience with Commonwealth Movers, with extensive damage to our furniture and things. The crew was friendly but careless with our furniture, clothes, and other things. We caution other families that the quality of Commonwealth Movers' work might be inconsistent. Among the damage we experienced: -Extensive gouges and scratches on several wood furniture pieces. -Packed children's toothbrushes in with a toilet brush. -Used suit blazers as packing material in boxes. -Tossed my husband's neckties in a box with shoes. -Packed heavy items on top of LED lightbulbs (which of course smashed them). -Broken antique ceramic art piece, which was placed on the truck with no box or padding. All the damage was preventable and we talked to the foreman several times about our concerns that the furniture was being put in the truck with no padding. At the end of the move, the owner of Commonwealth, Kevin Krissoff, came to our home to inspect the damage and agreed to have a professional furniture repair company come to repair the damage as best they could. Mr Krissoff was eager to discount our moving bill to compensate us for the broken items and repair costs, but the time and effort to replace and repair everything added considerable inconvenience to an already stressful effort of moving to a new home with young children. If the damage had been from forces beyond the crew's control (an act of God or a car accident or such), we would have been perfectly happy with Mr Krissoff's patient approach to making things right. But the damage was so easily preventable by just using regular old padding and common sense that we feel both sad and disappointed by the experience with Commonwealth. read more

This was my 3rd moving experience in the last 2 years and I only wish I had been able to use these guys previously (I made the horrendous mistake of hiring UNITED VAN LINES for a move to DC from NYC -- never again). This was a lateral move in DC, granted, but it could not have gone more smoothly. First off one of the owners, Mike, met me to give me an estimate (no local competitors who also came highly rated were prepared to do that) and he was bold enough to go over as he'd rather have gone over than under (re. end of job satisfaction issues) -- and because the movers moved so quickly and efficiently I ended up making up lots of time and everything was delivered and placed in perfect condition -- the adjusted amount was some 30% less than the estimated amount. In general moving experiences are not fun and often go wrong but if you want to safeguard yourself/ves against that from happening then go with these guys. Bravo Commonwealth movers! read more

The price came out higher than expected but for what it's worth, they got the job done efficiently and without damaging anything. I had used Commonwealth Movers in 1999 and 2000 so when I had to move in 2021 I decided to again give them a try. The movers were amazing and hard working all three moves! I cannot believe how the move was orchestrated so flawlessly. This time they moved me out of a 4th floor apartment with no elevators! They worked hard and only took a 5 min water break during the apartment move out. During the move in to my new place I made them stop for a lunch break. Heck I was hungry and I wasn't working hard like them! I had them move a crickety old desk that should have fallen apart and it made it through without a problem. I was shocked! They completed the move quicker than expected, came in under budget, and billed accordingly. I even got locked out of my new apartment as they were packing up and they offered to get a ladder out so I could get in through the balcony door! I hope not to move anytime soon but I would definitely use them again! read more

We hired them to do both packing and moving, and we had many antiques and fragile items. Everything was carefully packed and handled, and we didn't have a single item broken or dinged. We used Commonwealth Movers based on a recommendation from a coworker of mine. We moved from a 2 bedroom condo to a 3 bedroom townhouse about 15 minutes apart. We were so happy to be able to relax a little on moving day because of how helpful, friendly and efficient our movers were. The original quote was for 7 hours with 3 guys and a large truck. There were done in 5 hours! So our total was less, and we had a lot more time that day to unpack and settle in. I've used movers in the past that just did the bare minimum, took much longer than necessary to move less items, or just screwed me over on price and moved my time slot around. I'm happy to say the Commonwealth guys were on time and very gentle with our stuff, including shrink wrapping many items. They also made sure we were happy with where every piece of furniture was placed so we didn't have to move it around ourselves later. I was extremely pleased with the movers who moved our house where we lived for almost 30 years to another house in the DC area. No scratches or dents to the furniture nor damage to the walls at our old house or new house. Everything was in perfect shape at the arrival. When they unloaded everything at our new house, they repeatedly asked where we wanted things. Dishonest! Dishonest! Dishonest! Arranged for 3 men $150.00 an Hour. An easy 3 hour job. During the move the bill was redone with additional gas charges and a Pick-up-Delivery charge. The gas charge was $25.00 and the Pick-Up- Delivery charge was $150.00. The new bill was $625.00. The additional new charges were in different handwritting. The excuse was that the drive from their location was 45 minutes to my house. I clocked the mileage at only 12 miles!! The owner said, "They had to fill up with gas and a truck does not drive the same speed as a car." REALLY! 12 miles= 45 minutes! Maybe in traffic......but not from the Airpark to Gaithersburg. I have used Commonwealth too many times to count to move myself and various family members. It got to the point where we started saying "we better call Kevin" instead of the name of the company! They have always been courteous and on time and have gone out of their way to make sure everything was packed properly so that nothing was damaged. So Rick from Commonwealth gave me an initial estimate by email to move a small, 1bdr, 700sqft condo a total of one mile within DC: two movers, $450. He emailed again the next day and said he actually thought a 3-person team would be better, and priced it closer to $600. OK, fine. He said he'd make a free on-site visit to produce an exact estimate. By time he was done with on-site estimate, price was $1100, with a possible $200 extra fee if a couch to be moved failed to fit into the new condo. So, $450 more than doubled in 48 hours to somewhere between $1100-1,300. Instead I hired a DC-based, minority owned firm called Labor Neighbor. They cited me $609 for a 3-man, 5-hour move. And when it was over, that's exactly what I paid: $609. I tipped their team generously with the money I saved by not hiring the crooks at Commonwealth. You'd be a sucker to hire them. read more

They we're efficient, did not get much mud on the floors (it had been very rainy prior), and were pleasant to work with. All in all a great experience. Our estimator (Mike I believe) was straight and to the point with me in terms of discussing what we can expect in terms of costs for the move - and the team on move day was courteous, professional, and fast. Whenever I've heard about movers, I've worried about those "hidden fees" on the day of the move. Not here. The estimate that was written on paper a month before the move was the final charge for the move. And - they were the least expensive of the 5 moving companies we interviewed. Moving is one of the most stressful, horrible experiences and these guys did their absolute best to make sure that we were taken care of. Not one complaint or grumble from any of them , even after 8 hours in a misty rain. Not a thing was damaged. Everything packed and transported to perfection. I will say they did go slightly overboard with the packing paper but if something was damaged, I'd complain they didn't protect it enough - so I'll live. This is the first time we have moved in 45 years and were somewhat apprehensive about how it would go. In a word - amazing! Our move to Delaware from Silver Spring was a three day event. One day to pack, a day to load the truck and a day to unload in Delaware. The crew working with us were all extremely friendly and did they ever work. No down time on any of the three days. We are almost finished unpacking and haven't even found a chip or crack in anything. Our only complaint is the amount of wrapping on our pictures. Man, talk about careful. I am sad to have to write this review. On the day of my recent move, everything went smoothly, the movers were friendly, the foreman was very professional and did a great job taking apart and putting back together my platform bed. Unfortunately, after they left and I had a chance to unpack, I could not find my Kindle. I waited several days to call the company, thinking that I would find it, but after looking extensively I was unable to locate it. The worst part came when I called and spoke to the owner. He refused to entertain the possibility that someone could have taken it, even insinuating that people claim to have had something that was missing that they never actually owned. He was extremely condescending in a subsequent phone call, but did agree to credit me some money, and asked that I call back if I found my Kindle. In the meantime, I discovered that I was missing something else that was packed in the same container as my Kindle. Due to the owner's attitude when I had called previously, I did not call back but continued looking hoping that I would find the item which was a jewelry bag that contained my wedding ring (my husband died two years ago). Nothing was worth a lot of money, but obviously holds tremendous sentimental value. The other day, I found the Kindle in a location where I never would have put it. It was in a hall closet on the top shelf way in the back, someplace where it might be put if someone had second thoughts about taking it particularly since it was locked and would be of no use to someone else. As promised, I called the owner to let him know that I had found the Kindle and also told him about my jewelry. I simply asked that he speak with the movers hoping he could appeal to someone's better conscience and they would mail me my wedding ring. His response was simply, they didn't take it, they don't steal. While it is commendable to stick up for your employees, anyone given the right circumstances and opportunity is capable of doing almost anything, and I found his response very insensitive at best given the circumstances. If I should find my jewelry, I will be happy to amend this review, but I moved to a small condo and in a month's time have not been able to find it and my heart is broken. UPDATE: Yes, I found the Kindle someplace where I never would have put it, tucked in a hall closet on the top shelf. The Kindle and the travel jewelry pouch were packed in the same container. After the move, I was missing both. The Kindle was locked and so was of no use to anyone else. The jewelry pouch not only contained my wedding ring but other gold and silver jewelry. I did not offer to pay back the money because I am missing something irreplaceable. My wedding ring was not worth thousands of dollars but it is certainly worth more than was offered to me for the Kindle. I don't need money for the wedding ring, I will just hope someone's conscience will allow them to return it to me. read more

With only one weeks notice and a recommendation we booked Commonwealth Movers. Julio, Joe and Enrique showed up ready to work. They got stuck in traffic on the way to Alexandria but I got a call letting me know. They apologized immediately upon arrival as well and were ready to work. Common courtesy goes a long way! Five hours of packing, one hour of actual moving and one fifteen minute break and they were done! Well worth every penny. They were much more efficient than I would have been. Unfortunately I've been pondering on writing this message because the movers were friendly and personable and appeared professional. My move started off well until I realized a few months after several personal items and clothing were missing. I would not have know this until I needed the cloths and other items. I reported early on items that were missing after I unpacked my creates and I reported it to the owner Kevin. He sent two guys to my home because his rule is to have them spot check before he can reimbursed me. Of course, none of the items were found, so he reimbursed me for those items. A few months later I had time to sort cloths in my bedroom closet so I started with my dress suites and I soon found out several suites, my made to order hats and several summer hats, shoes, and a handmade clock from Elsalvador were also missing. All Holidays, I have a great display for that season and recently during the Easter Holiday I pulled out to display all of holiday items and my most recent 2 foot Bunny character I purchased late 2015 was also missing. I was appalled then and now. My furniture and personal belongs were stored on site for 1 week and I was told I did not need a key. So I can only assume this violation of my personal possession happen after the move from my former resident. This moving group found a spot and went through my creates (that I purchased) and packed before reaching Gaithersburg, MD. Which would explain why Kevin or management felt they needed a 4 mover instead of 3 for my final move. They took far to long too return to Gaithersburg... This violation to me is unforgivable, no one deserves to be treated that way. Some of the items missing were buried under cloths and books so that moving group, Oscar team lead and the others have won the owner confidence but you can mark my words, they will do it again. Commonwealth was recommended by another reputable moving coming in the DC area that was booked, but pointed me to Commonwealth as their go-to overflow company. Having had a disastrous experience last year with Paxton, who's guys threw my stuff around and scratch and beat up some things (sloppy handling), and an even worse experience a few years ago with 495 Movers, who outright stole a laptop and other valuable personal items from my things, Commonwealth was a breath of fresh air. Faith was a pleasure to set up the order with. Because of a sudden business meeting request the day of the move - I was moving locally from Takoma Park to Silver Spring - I asked if the moving guys could come as early as possible. I was told - at such short notice - maybe 8am (normally they start at 9). The team actually came at 7am - which was perfect for me. The moving team were all careful with my things and pros and fast... the whole move got done in 4 hours and I had a 3 bdr house to move (I was well packed and prepared for them however; had I not been, it would have taken way longer). Nothing was damaged or scratched - and throughout the process both Faith, and the dispatcher - were in touch and pleasant - and the moving crew was as nice as could be. We used Commonwealth to load two 16' containers for storage. This company sent us three hard working, courteous men who worked miracles packing all of our belongings safely into our containers. We booked this company as it has the highest rating on Checkbook, and that rating is well-deserved. These men were absolute pros, taking care to wrap furniture and treasured art work and taking care not to scratch our hardwood floors and walls on the way out. They arrived on time and worked extremely hard the entire time they were on site, with just a short break for lunch.
