First, Karel the owner came before the move to assess the items being moved (3 bedroom, 2 bathroom) and give me an estimate. He arrived on time and was very friendly and thorough. The estimate was very fair with a not to exceed amount, which worked very well within my budget. The day of the move, the movers arrived on time, and the weather was awful with rain and wind. They were very professional and did an amazing job. The weather did not hamper their ability to do their job with extreme efficiency. They kept their focus on the move, but were also very friendly with a sense of humor. Despite the weather, they were able to get all items moved in a timely manner, and I did not pay the not to exceed amount. I have moved many times over the past 12+ years, and this company by far exceeded my expectations compared to other movers I have used. I've moved several times over the last few years - both by myself and using companies to do the lifting - and this was by far my best experience. Starting from the estimate, Julian was efficient and very nice during his tour and provided a transparent estimate. Then, with the packing, Sammy and Emilio did a tremendous job packing quickly and asking clarifying questions when needed. They packed well within the estimated time. And on move-in day, Sammy, Emilio, Ricky, and Dom did a fantastic job moving quickly and carefully. They are incredibly efficient - no clue how they can carry so many boxes at once. Again, they finished the move well within the estimated time - even ahead of time. In total, the move was ~10% below the estimate (even after adding materials). This story begins with researching several movers to help disassemble, wrap and move furniture to storage for a future overseas move by shipping container. This is my first time hiring movers, so I tried my best to compare apples to apples, be cost-efficient, yet select the most capable and professional movers possible. This was also to be a working interview for the movers since I will need to have all the contents of our 2 bedroom house loaded onto the shipping container in a few weeks. And ideally within 3 hours according to the shipping container contract. Barry, project coordinator, was extremely accommodating about working with me to come up with an estimate sight unseen. I had very limited time during the work week to communicate, so email was the only way to go and Barry always responded swiftly. The whole moving process became more overwhelming by the week. Not only did contents need to be boxed up, but also itemized and inventoried for the overseas shipping move. As moving day approached, and my anxiety escalated, Barry remained calm and understanding even though I almost short notice canceled in order to save on some costs. The day of the move, Barry asked if I'd mind switching moving time windows from morning to afternoon. He seemed genuinely concerned about how this might impact our plans for the day. In the end, we needed the extra time to be ready for the movers. And despite my spat of flakiness a few days before, Barry was genuinely grateful for my willingness to be flexible in order to help them out. The movers Rory and Gerry were outstanding! Clearly, they had a lot of moving experience based on how efficiently they moved through room by room and wrapped up the furniture. I was very impressed at how they communicated with each other, worked independently and then as a team at appropriate times without slowing down the process. At my request, they always double checked with me that I had labeled and inventoried each item before taking it out to the moving van. And their strength! Unbelievable! These two are beasts! After my first experience with Commander Moving, I have no doubt that they are the ones I can count on to load my shipping container in a safe, logical manner and in record time. Moving is always a drag, but Commander makes the process as painless as possible. Ruth was a great resource for information when I scheduled the date and was in contact a few times leading up to our move. Adam, Manny and Ian arrived right on time and had a great attitude - most importantly, they were fast! And very efficient. They often checked in about moving certain items to make sure they were okay to proceed, which I really appreciated. They even moved large items around in the new apartment when we changed our mind during our move! However we thought they could have been more careful with one piece of furniture which ended up getting scratches on it. They did not spend the time to wrap the items properly. They moved me from a 1+den sized house into 3rd floor studio apartment in SF! TJ and Rocky were an amazing team! They were really nice, fast and hardworking! And they came right on time and were actually about 5 minutes early. They moved me in about 6 hours (with the help of 2 very strong little women at the unload end!). I had a lot of boxes so if I only had a few with furniture I'm confident they would have been able to do it faster. I really like how they have an all-inclusive pricing (plus double drive time cost though). There's absolutely no hidden fees and I was able to estimate how much the move would cost. Like many moving companies I've worked with, they offer a small discount if you pay in cash!! A little helps a lot when moving! My only complaints: I was surprised they didn't Saran Wrap any part of my mattress - even the bottom part that would touch the ground and I didn't realize it until I watched them dragging it down the hallway from the elevator! This is the Tenderloin - who knows what germs are in the hallway!!! (Yuck. You bet I disinfected my mattress!) During my last move movers had wrapped the entire thing with plastic so I was just surprised they didn't. Also, boxes were placed on top of boxes I had marked "fragile". Luckily nothing is broken.... I think.... I actually haven't finished unpacking dishes yet... Added 09/25/13: Just wanted to note that their customer service is pretty fantastic! My first move in 20 years, so naturally I turn to Yelp. There are several well recommended movers, so I started with Commander. They were quick to respond, set up a visit to give me an estimate, and within a week I had an estimate that came close to what I imagined it would be. However, just before confirming, the COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place hit us. Like many, I went off the grid for 3 months. When I began to stir from my slumbers, Commander was one of the first contacts I made. They didn't miss a beat. My move was scheduled, my estimate affirmed, and we were set. I have several very large and valuable pieces of art. I. Needn't have worried. The crew who showed up to move me, Peter, Alex and Rory were great. They treated my stuff with respect and carefully wrapped fixes and those pieces of art and furniture that I hadn't been able to get to. They loaded the truck skillfully and quickly. It was immediately obvious that she was calm under pressure, that she genuinely understood the stress of moving and would be there for us no matter what we needed. My wife and I are moving from Oakland to Honolulu and needed to have a shipping container filled with all of our stuff. I called Commander Saturday morning requesting a move of furniture around my house in Piedmont with some to be donated to Salvation Army and some to be taken to the dump. Mike and Amos arrived Sunday morning on schedule and quickly and efficiently moved furniture around as directed and hauled away the excess furniture. BEWARE!!! THEIR EMPLOYEE ROBBED US, WAS ARRESTED, THEY SAID THEY WOULD REFUND US AND HAVE GHOSTED US FOR A YEAR. AVOID AT ALL COST! Last summer my husband and I hired Commander Moving to move us into our new home in Berkeley. We did a full package that included the home being packed up entirely. This was very expensive but we felt it was worth it. On the day of the move we had a house full of movers busy at work. I brought along some personal items that I wanted to move over myself that included a box of jewelry. All seemed to go smoothly and my husband helped the movers move stuff in, bought them beer and snacks and we gave them a generous tip. That evening I was looking for my wallet and could not find it. I wondered if I had dropped it in the craziness of the move. After checking my credit card account I noticed it had been used at a gas station and quickly canceled the card. At this point I did wonder if the movers had stolen my wallet but they "seemed" nice and I thought I must have dropped it outside somewhere. The following day as I was putting things away I noticed my jewelry box was tampered with. I looked through it and noticed that I was missing pieces of jewelry including my engagement ring! At this point I was confident it had been stolen by the movers. We called Commander Moving and we filed a police report. We were terrified that these people had been through every single room in our house and new all of the entrances to our home. Great way to start a new chapter in our new home! Commander started off very apologetic and let's us know that if it is one of their guys that they will refund us. The Berkeley police were excellent in tracking down the employee through the gas station transaction ( he also stole my wallet) getting his license plate details and confirming that the Commander employee was the thief. They also let me know he had a LONG criminal history of petty theft! We are enraged that this company hired this person and let them into our home. The employee was arrested, confesses to it all and I presume is fired. Commanders insurance company paid for the stolen jewelry about 6-8 months after the robbery. Commander promised they would refund us for the move and that has yet to happen. We are disappointed with the whole experience from top to bottom. The move cost us somewhere around 5k! My advice is DO NOT USE THEM. They don't even have the decency to refund us after having said they would! I have had multiple friends recently move in and out of the Bay Area and after hearing my story have avoided them like the plague. You have been warned. read more

Great move led by Ira just now. Friendly, effective, fast, made the whole move low stress. We even added in an extra stop to drop off a heavy stationary bike at a friend's place. That one was pretty tricky- a winding, twisting, steep, old narrow staircase, with just inches of clearance on all sides (including the ceiling). They handled it no problem. Parking on our street was kind of a pain, but they handled that no problem. They'll do any type of move, from just picking up a bunch of pre-packed boxes, to wrapping up all your furniture, to the full white-glove treatment of packing everything up, moving it, and then putting every cup in it's place in the cupboard in the new apartment. Had an amazing experience with Commander Moving! We were selling our house before purchasing a new one so needed to find a mover that could also store our items and Commander was the perfect fit. They brought in a professional team that quickly loaded up all our items, including many heavy boxes of books and records. And oh yes a piano as well.
