My company had a huge work dinner here, and we were placed in the outdoor patio space. While the margarita and the bone marrow tacos were amazing, the other dishes, manner of serving, and the ambiance left a lot to be desired.
Serving sizes were all over the place, and they did not make it easy to share food, especially when the whole concept was "family style."
I was contemplating why it was so challenging to eat a family style meal here... I'm of a culture where family style is the norm, but I somehow didn't enjoy it in this restaurant. It was bizarre how inconvenient some of the servings were to eat, but I realized that it was a combination of two factors: manner of serving and dim lighting!
Throughout the meal, we were left confused on how to share our dishes, which ranged from being tiny and unimpressive to giant, unmanageable cuts. We didn't even have serving utensils!
For example, our corner of our table ended up having a spoonful each of a mysterious dish, which may have been the Tuna Aguachile, Watermelon, Costeno Rojo, and Kelp Chicharrón shown in the website's menu. It was such a confusing mishmash of flavors, and we had to smash it ourselves and scoop it out with our own utensils, which isn't the most hygienic.
Then with the Cooks Venture Half Chicken, Smoked Mushroom, and Pasilla Mixe Chicken Jus dish, we had to saw away at it with our own personal utensils, and grab the bone to yank away bits of our own servings. It would be much better if the staff would either cut it into more manageable chunks, or make it easy to pull from. Plus, it was extremely oversalted.
We had several other dishes that were forgettable or meh, such as the salad and tetela. The tacos de pescado was decent, but not memorable.
The star of the show was the Bone Marrow Tacos, Quelites, Smoked Butter, and Pecan Gremolata. Wow! This was amazing, and if it weren't for the overall poor experience I had with everything else, I'd come back for this one.
The entire time we were squinting at our food in the dim lighting. Add some lights! The outdoor space would look so much better with some warm lighting. We had to use the flashlight on our phones so we could see what we were eating or cut our food. I kept on thinking, "We're too OLD for this dim place." It didn't seem intimate or trendy. Just dark and frustrating.
Lastly, I didn't get to eat the dessert, much to my disappointment. Dinner dragged on and on, and I needed to go home to my infant. I asked the wait staff if I could have my dessert to go, and was turned down for several reasons. Firstly, because the "family style" servings would be "ruined" if I took a portion of it home, secondly, these would be served 15 minutes after our last savory dish. No exceptions or alternatives.
I was incredulous. Firstly, why the long wait? Our meals were set in advance! Was it not prepared yet? The meal had already taken way too long. Also, we were literally spending thousands of dollars on this food and bottomless drinks. I had said multiple times I had to go in minutes. You couldn't offer something as an alternative to take home? A non family style dessert or something? It's not like we were skimping on our budget!
All in all, I was not impressed with Comedor. TLDR, poor lighting, confusing or oversalted flavors, and weird serving manner/style, and uncooperative waitstaff.
I wouldn't come back, even though I bet that bone marrow taco dish will haunt my memory because of its deliciousness. Some experiences just aren't worth it. read more
