I'm sorta mixed on Colossal. It used to be one of our favorite brunch spots, but the food's gone downhill a little. When we lived in St. Paul, it was a pretty regular place for us, but we stopped going when we moved to Mpls. I'm back in St. Paul again and very close to the Como location and decided to try it again. Unfortunately I found the food a little disappointing. The quality of the ingredients is still solid, but it was all sorta undercooked and kind of greasy. Both the hashbrowns and the eggs could have used a few more minutes - the hashbrowns were barely cooked and the toast was kinda soggy and was not up to the challenge of holding up under an over-easy egg on top. I've been twice recently and the first time the eggs were barely cooked (even for an over-easy egg) and the second time it was over-cooked with the egg yolk being completely solid. I really don't care for their pancakes - they're super yeasty and had a sorta unpleasant taste. On the plus side, it's a very comfortable space, if busy and a little small. The coffee is good and they offer both tap and sparkling water for free, which is nice. The food comes out very quickly even when they're packed. I'm not going to give up on it yet because before these two recent trips, I'd had maybe 25 times of really solid food from years ago. If they'd cook the food a little more, it would be an easy 4, but unfortunately that's not the case. read more

This is the second location I try and wow I am a fan of this one! I mean it is a plus that it's closer to where I live but it's located in the cutest shopping area. You come in, grab a menu, and place your order in the front. They will provide you with a number and someone will take you to the table you will be at. I find this to be a helpful system as opposed to trying to move the tables yourself to fit your party. There is a station on the side where you can grab coffee and water. I had the biscuits and gravy and my gosh it always hits the spot! I must say this is an amazing place to bring your kids because they have such a great selection for kids menus. They offer a colossal breakfast and it comes with a great place of fruit, toast, bacon and eggs and some delicious jam. I'm making Fisk the breakfast place to bring all my friends and family that comes visits me. To top it off they have a great selection of pastries on display. This breakfast was DELICIOUS! I was super excited for the frittata, which did not disappoint. The scone was warm and so tasty and the flappers...ohhhhh, the flappers... SO good with the sweet/salty creamy goodness of the brie, apple, walnut combo. BRING YOUR APPETITE! The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is the lack of jam. If you want a flapper with your eggs and hashbrowns, they force you to pay full price for the flapper like if you are only ordering that. I love this place. Colossal Cafe is a smaller breakfast and brunch joint with really well-done and homemade everything. We could tell there was quality in everything we ate. I got the lentil soup (a cup was bigger than expected) and it came with 2 pieces of bread that were perfectly toasted and buttered. My sister and I shared hash browns and pancakes. Their pancakes are 5/5...just delicious and the most fluffy ever. I also loved their hash browns. They were perfectly crispy but could've used a little onion or some sort of flavor (but maybe that's just me). Their homemade pineapple habanero hot sauce was AMAZING. You can buy a bottle to go which is awesome. Prices were fair too. The atmosphere is home-y and you first line up and order before sitting down so the food came fairly fast after ordering. I was attending the Friends Plant Sale at the State Fairgrounds and needed to burn some time. Since I would never turn down getting a good breakfast, I decided to see what was around the area. I found Colossal Café was close and so decided to make my way there. It was quite busy when I got there and things seemed to be juggled between frazzled individuals but after I got my order in I was able to squeeze into a table (not many, things are kinda tight) and warm up with a cup of TruStone Coffee. As mentioned above, they serve TruStone Coffee here which is a pretty good local roaster. They specialize in origin coffees and have a few blends. Sadly, the origin coffee always seemed to be empty when I would go up and the coffee brewer never seemed to keep up with the crowd. Oh well, the 5 Bean was OK. The star of my breakfast was the pancakes. They are called Flappers here and they are delicious. They are a yeasted pancake which gives them a unique and grainy taste and texture. They paired very well with the real maple syrup served alongside them. I got the three stack and could not finish the plate. Prices were reasonable for the food that you got and from what I saw come out the kitchen, everything was high quality and large portions. That is what I like to see in a breakfast joint. Colossal Cafe offers the perfect breakfast if your starving and looking for a good size meal. I biked here on an early Sunday morning and it wasn't too crowded yet. You order at the counter and then take your seat. I had a breakfast sandwich with biscuit, bacon and cheddar. The biscuit was delicious and the portions were huge. I had enough to eat for two meals. The bacon was really soggy though and a little disappointing. The ordered one pancake and it was (as expected) the size of a large plate and a delicious sourdough. They also have a variety of omelets, baked goods, and bread. It's located at a beautiful spot in Como and I would definitely take a walk through the neighborhood afterward. I will never be sick if this sandwich... And the GF Funfetti macaroons were amazing - tasted EXACTLY like funfetti cake. The pursuit of weekend brunch in the Twin Cities leads many hungry mouths to this establishment. With 30-40 minute waits being commonplace in this place of morning to mid-day nourishment, let this not be the first meal of your day. The booths are small and the tables few so hang around on stools and at the bar next door as they call your name. You can get a cup of joe and any of the pastries they have on display while you wait for a table. We had the chocolate croissant, the cajun burrito bowl, the colossal breakfast, the Cubano, biscuits and gravy, a sausage stuffed omelet and a plain flapjack. The pastries are dry and hard as they sit near the entrance with the cold air freezing the butter in them so ask for them to be warmed up (which should be the default here). The coffee is good with speedy refills. The burrito bowl was a spicy sausage hash with tinned tomatoes, onions over a deep-fried hash brown and served with a sunny side up egg on top. There was, unfortunately, no bread to cut through the spice and grease. The hashbrown and the sausage mix was immensely oily. The other dishes met with approval overall. The pancakes here are huge and yeasty, almost as if laced with beer. They offer an interesting twist to the pancake but don't have universal appeal. The service once seated was reasonably quick given the rush and there is a palpable sense of guilt as you linger on the tables after finishing your devouring, blocking the nutrition of upstanding patrons waiting all around you. This is not a fully relaxed dining environment where one can breakfast for hours. But it is a decent breakfast place nonetheless offering hearty portions. read more

This is a good neighborhood breakfast option. We got there around 10:30 on Saturday morning and the wait was about 15 minutes, but by the time we left an hour later, the line had grown a lot. While we were waiting, they gave us free chocolate chip muffins! The veggie and feta omelette had a lot of veggies (although it was a little greasy) but not much feta cheese, which was disappointing. The sourdough bread was tasty though. The Apple Brie pancakes were a good portion and quite delicious, but could have used more syrup. The Colossal Café in St Anthony Park is literately the best breakfast I've ever had. Reasonable prices, stellar service and food gets out quick. Weekend breakfast can get crowded, especially since there's a church right next door to this place and the seating, while decent, can't support the post- church rush. Right away I took off the brie (seems like an odd and super unhealthy pairing), and the pancakes tasted like an apple pie. Definitely does not taste like a traditional pancake and is an acquired taste that tastes like an apple pie. I could not overcome the mental block of having my pancakes taste like apples and wasn't a huge fan but respect the portion size and quality of food. Egg, Swiss and Ham Breakfast Sandwich on Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits (4.5/5 Stars): $7 Imagine a two massive red lobster biscuits with egg, ham, and cheese in between. Heavenly. Enough said. I will say that it is extremely dense and better to not be eaten all by one person. When places use a 'mix' for everything instead making cakes, macarons, and creams from scratch...they tend to make a lot of it, and give huge portions to make the customer feel like they got a bang for their buck. We chefs have meat grinders at home and organic pig farmers to get us great cuts of meat. I love the DIY beverage area. You can get your own water, tap or sparkling. And prep your own coffee. It's kind a genius, really. Do you want staff fussing over your water and coffee, or bringing you another flip cake? I vote for the flip. Speaking of flips. Who thought of this brilliant dessert?
