Service was quick and friendly. Bonuses for me they have sparkling water on tap with plenty of limes. They also seemed to have a plentiful selection of fresh baked items. Though Colossal does it all well, the pancakes are (in my opinion) the notable star. They are made with a special recipe that involves yeast, which, turns out, makes for an outstanding and unique pancake. The house-made biscuits are also ridiculously good. I went to Colossal Cafe for breakfast. If you are looking for a more relaxing cafe with simple but delicious breakfast food, I recommend this place. The pancakes are HUGE and fluffy. They also have a variety of breakfast sandwiches if you are looking for a cheaper option. I had the prosciutto with sundried tomatoes sandwich on whole wheat bread. All of the ingredients were very fresh and flavorful. As a side note, I was too full for dessert but they also offered a variety of cakes, cinnamon rolls, and other sweets. Came here for a late brunch on a weekday and it was still extremely busy. I chose a spot at the bar just so I could be seated more quickly but it was actually kind of nice to be up where the action was. The server was quick to offer coffee/tea to help get me through the rest of the morning which is always a plus. Loved the homey, welcoming vibe of the venue and the staff. While the specials looked amazing, I opted to go for the fried egg sandwich with prosciutto, sun-dried tomatoes, and swiss cheese on the highly-recommended biscuit. Added a side of avocado to add the sandwich since I was hungrier than usual. It took a while for the food to come back but I assumed that was because it was busier. Unfortunately, it came on sourdough bread instead of a biscuit by accident which was still good but I wanted to try more of the food that they were known for. They also forgot to put in my order for a side salad but were quick to get it once I let them know. All in all, the food was savory, well-prepared, and paired flavors well so my hunger was happily fulfilled. The first time I went, I wasn't impressed at all. We waited 45 minutes, received bad service and the food was subpar. I had been wanting to stop in to check this little spot out for a while since the Minneapolis location is always jam packed and I've always enjoyed the food, but with this location I think the bakery is different and not in a good way. I had the chocolate "croissant" and there's no way you can call the thing that was on my plate a croissant. A pastry-sure, I'll reluctantly give it that label. But this thing weighed 3 pounds-croissants are supposed to be light and flaky! Either way though it was only ok and I could only take about three bites. It's filled with half a jar of Nutella, and there is this raspberry syrup drizzled on top (and I THINK there was some inside, but I couldn't say for sure because I was wading through too much Nutella) that really put it into the "so over the top sweet that I can't even cut it with black coffee" realm. Bottom line-pretty in the case and on the plate, and it might sound like a good idea, but it's not a must-have or a have ever again in my case! My recommendation to patrons: stick to the good, tried and true menu, skip the bakery all together and you'll probably be happy. My recommendation to Colossal: get a baker who knows what a croissant really is! P.S. The St. Paul Colossal Cafe was a surprise in all the best ways. My mom and I had brunch here last Saturday and I now desperately wish I lived in the neighborhood. This cafe is so cute it makes me want to pinch its cheeks.** I know the food is fantastic at the other location, so THAT wasn't the surprise. Unlike the 612 location, this is not a dive and it's not so tiny that the only option is takeout. It's an order-first cafe with breakfast, lunch and now... da-da-da-daaa---dinner! They started dinner service yesterday. On a busy Saturday morning, there was a happy community vibe to the place. We chatted briefly with our table neighbors and even the staff was incredibly friendly. So many smiles. We came at the end of the brunch rush, so thankfully we were able to loiter and chat at our table (for a ridiculously long time) without any dirty looks. The design of the restaurant is beautiful and they really paid attention to details. For example, there's this long table in the back that can be curtained off for private dinners. And there's an open kitchen with bar seating. And the bathroom has this gorgeous subway tile. And there's a water tap for regular AND bubbly water on the self-serve station. WHAT is this wizardry? I love fancy water. But you only care about the food, right? Well, it's delicious and the breakfast sandwiches are a surprisingly good value. My mom ordered an $8 bacon-green onion-cream cheese omelette and I got the egg-bacon-cheddar sandwich on toast (they bake the bread in-house; you can also get the sandwich on flappers or biscuits), plus coffee and extra-crispy hashbrowns for $3 because it was that kinda morning. Mmm... bacon. My sandwich was only $5 and it was about as big as the omelette, just inside the buttery, fresh-baked toast instead outside. This place accepts cash only which is rather inconvenient especially since there's no ATM in the building. But perhaps I'm fairly imposing my Los Angeles expectations on a smaller midwest town. PLaces in LA that are cash only usually have an ATM inside their building in order to accommodate those of us who don't carry cash. We ordered the spinach and blue cheese scone which was delicious. I ordered the prosciutto and swiss breakfast sandwich ($6.95) which was a bit of a let down because the prosciutto seemed like it was ham rather than prosciutto. Anybody who knows me understands my deep affection for brunch and all that it offers. Thusly, they also know my craving for a better brunch place in the twin cities. My friend recently put me on to Colossal Café and I now have it in my regular rotation. They simply do brunch really well and I would guess dinner too, but I have yet to try that. However, I am so impressed with their brunch that I am going to write them a stellar review anyways. For one, the artichoke frittata is amazing and full of the green gold that is virgin olive oil. They have probably the best biscuits and gravy in town which features really awesome sausage gravy. Lastly they have this amazing toast that comes with many of their dishes. I don't know how you improve on toast, but I think it may involve more extra virgin olive oil and a really hot oven. Now so you understand how the process works, their brunch service is a cafeteria style. That does differ from their dinner which is traditional table waiting from what I understand. The atmosphere is a casual rustic café with a more upscale feel. This is no dive café for hipsters but rather fancy casual brunch for your preppy liberal. So get brunch this weekend at Colossal Café as their toast is magnificent and their sausage gravy hearty. After all, a Sunday without brunch is rather not like a Sunday at all and will leave your weekend feeling wasted and unfulfilling. I really thought the food at Colossal was very good. All the things you'd expect from a place that touts local, fresh and from-scratch-cooked food. However, the restaurant leaves something to be desired in terms of making things easy and comfortable for guests. I guess part of it is that the space is just too small for the amount of traffic this place does. But I really think they ought to consider revising their system to make things easier for guests. OK, so specifics... The food was great. We were lured by yummy breakfast deliciousness and solid reviews here on Yelp. My husband got the brie apple and walnut pancakes and I got the biscuits and gravy. The pancakes were very dense and yeasty, in a good way. I wish we'd know just how heavy they are, though. The short stack of two would definitely have sufficed. We loved the idea of this stack of pancakes, but wished the apples had been cut up smaller, the walnuts had been chopped instead of whole and that the brie cheese had been somehow prepared in a different more bite-sized way rather than just sticking two thick slices of brie on top of the pile. The flavors were amazing but no big points for ease of eating with this dish. Tasty, though. The biscuits and gravy was also truly yummy with delicious sausage gravy and a big fat biscuit. I will say that I thought the biscuit was pretty heavy too, not flaky. But still tasty. And the poached eggs on top were 100% perfect. Saw a plate of homefries go by and wished we'd ordered some. So food wise, really high marks. We will definitely come back just on the merits of the food. Now for the system... as newcomers and first-time visitors, we found the whole thing really odd. You walk in, get in line and place your order at the counter. You are handed a mug for coffee if you ordered some and a street sign (ok, a stand with a little paper version of a street sign) that serves as your calling card. Then you proceed to stand around awkwardly where there's nowhere to really stand while trying not to get in the way of other people and also not hover obnoxiously over people who are actually seated and eating food. We waited about half an hour before an employee found us via our street sign, sat us at a table and then we waited another 10 minutes or so for food. The fact that you serve yourself both coffee and water added to the chaos since there were constantly people getting up and down from the tables to get refills. In all, it just seems really weird and confusing for people. I think that with the volume this place does, it might be in order to consider table service with a hostess and a waiting list that is more traditional but also a lot more clear and leaves those patrons lucky enough to have a seat at a table the chance to actually enjoy their food without feeling like everyone around them is staring at them and urging them to eat faster. i am not sure that this place ever has a down time, but if it does, that would be the time to come and grab a most enjoyable bite to eat. But if it's 11 a.m. on a weekend, be prepared to deal with people and have some patience. The food may still be worth it, but as a lover of things that are easy, visiting this restaurant does not make my list for hassle-free dining. Take it for what you will. read more

We decided to take the short stuck (2 pancakes) since we usually cannot eat a lot, however our choice was not still right...The flappers were huge and thick so we couldn't finish them, even the half of them! It was happy surprise when the waiter brought us the dishes. It was HUGE!!! Also we were surprised at the texture and the taste of flappers. It was soft and fluffy. We liked it a lot! Of course the taste was very good. I liked the cinnamon flavor of the syrup with grazed apples and walnut. The combination of the taste with salty and sweet was really good. After tasting this special flappers, the ordinal flapper seemed boring a bit. But it was a great lunch. The tip I should note for you is, bring back the flappers to home by box, the tastes and texture of the pancake goes bad quickly, and it's very disappointing. The name is appropriate for the portion sizes. This is a great breakfast spot, especially if you're seeking to start off your day well fed. One tip is to know what you want quickly so that you lessen your wait time. Also, the St. Paul location is bigger (a smidgen less postage stamp) than the Minneapolis location. If you don't mind rubbing shoulders with strangers, the "bar" can decrease your wait time over a table. They are very good at egg-white omelets and perfectly cooked bacon, which is what I had. They also featured adult head-sized cinnamon rolls, but I'm not ambitious enough to even go there. Maybe if I were with four other friends, I may have gone for it. I always try to get the "signature" item when visiting a new place, so I ordered the Apple Walnut Brie flappers (short stack). They were pretty good though I could only eat one. I asked for the toppings on the side so I could take leftovers without them being soggy. Anyway, the toppings were full of whole, crunchy walnuts and so yummy. The flapper itself wasn't quite what I was expecting, but still good. If I were to go back I'd probably get a more traditional breakfast. Just got back from lunch at Colossal Cafe with my mom. First off, the location is perfect, I love St. Anthony Park (plus it's close to my work). The inside is modern, yet cozy. You order at the counter and then servers bring the food to your table. The menu is fairly small and consists mainly of breakfast dishes like omelets and breakfast sandwiches, as well as soups, salad and other sandwiches. I decided to go with the ham, cheese and egg breakfast sandwich on toast. I was a little hesitant to try the flapper after reading a review that said the flapper wasn't fully cooked on the breakfast sandwich, plus the girl at the counter told me the bread for the toast was a sourdough made in house. The food came out reasonably quick, and the sandwich is a good portion size. You get a lot of ham and egg, and the toast was quite good. My only complaint is that it seemed a little greasy, like they buttered the bread too much before putting it on the griddle. We also ordered one of their strawberry scones to share. I'm a sucker for scones. The scones at Colossal Cafe are moist and tender, but to be honest, I like mine a little sweeter. I think this scone could have used more strawberry and perhaps some white chocolate chips. I did enjoy the cinnamon, and the scone kind of reminded me of a snickerdoodle. read more

I was meeting a friend who lives in St. Paul from breakfast. Not living in be area/having limited familiarity with the area, I was at her mercy. She recommended this place and after looking at the reviews, I obliged. We got there at around 9. You walk in, stand in line to order and then grab a table. Not a huge fan of this concept, but whatever works I guess. I got the egg and cheese sandwich on the buttermilk biscuit, and based on my friend's recommendation, I also had to order the colossal cinnamon roll. I was not disappointed with my choices! The buttermilk biscuit was amazing. The cinnamon roll was probably, no, definitively the best I've ever had. Did we ever come at the right time, arriving at 9. Once we sat down and got out food, there was a line OUT THE DOOR of people trying to order food. At that point it became survival of the fittest when trying to get a table. I was very pleasantly surprised, I assumed this would be a general breakfast spot with limited selections... but those selections were awesome! I'm more of a brunch so I ended up getting the grilled cheese and cup of French onion soup, hubby was confused why I would order just a grilled cheese but this is a yummy toasted bread, warm gooey Brie, apples and caramelized onions grilled cheese... and it was delicious! I could have probably scaled back on the amount of onions but it was super tasty.... the French onion soup was so good! The only thing that confused me was the cheese that was missing from my soup.... either way I ate it cus it was yummy! The hubs went with the sweet potatoes onion and Brussel sprout hash and we got the pancakes with fruit to share/try... the hash is mindblowingly delicious! The Brussel sprouts just bring it to a whole new level! Now on to pancakes- by that time we were so stuffed but they are amazing! They're yeasty so a little heavier then your usual pancake but I'd get them every time! The maple syrup is warm, flowy and real! The jam was homemade and it was the best jam I have ever had, hands down. You must try their jam with their toast, it was the best part of my meal. All four of our party got the Cubano sandwich with side salads and two of us got black coffee. It was a pretty tasty and filling sandwich but nothing unusual from a standard Cuban sandwich. I wished the meat wasn't split side by side rather stacked on top of each other. The bread was the best part of the sandwich; great crust and perfect density. The coffee was also fine, not the best. The Apple Bree Walnut pancakes on the menu is what caught my eye and made me give this place a try. And my other daughters chicken sandwich was...Lacking in gourmet goodness that was displayed in the pancake and omelette. But would be perfect for someone who likes just plain grilled chicken sandwich with not a lot of flavor. And it came with a side salad. Healthy. Over all when I return to try this place again? Thick slices of tomatoes, perfectly whipped eggs, gooey mozzarella, topped with a balsamic reduction and fresh basil. I decided to get it with ham, and although it was AMAZING, I probably wouldn't do it again... Between the omelette $12, the add-on ham $4, and the cup of coffee (not sure on price) I spent almost $25 on breakfast just for myself. Getting past the sticker shock though, I was in heaven and gladly payed the price for such delicious food. We came back the day I left for brunch again and this time I payed a little closer attention to my spending... I ordered one of the breakfast sandwiches and again it was so delicious, and best yet it came out of the kitchen so fast! I bought myself a mug to keep at work, to remind myself of all the fun, and great memories I made with my sister and family!! Wonderful food, great service, and great memories! Maybe I came on a bad day? Biscuits were old, stale, and really dense; no flake or layers at all. The pork and bison gravy was okay, not spectacular. The scrambled eggs were overcooked. The chai latte was way too sweet. I'm willing to try again! read more
