This yarn store has one of the best selection of yarn I have seen with the majority of it being hand-dyed yarn. It showcases an assortment of new dyers as well as tried and true dyers like Madeline Tosh. In addition to the many hand-dyed yarns there is a good selection of rustic yarns and budget-friendly yarns like acrylic. Their notions selection was vast. The store was packed to the brim with yarn--a knitter's and crocheter's paradise. This is definitely a destination yarn store because it's not in a great location. It's tucked away and minimal signage. I found it on a Google search. One thing I wish the staff had taken into consideration was a sniffly sales associate. The employee either suffered from allergies or fighting a cold. This was off-putting since the employee was the one ringing up the yarn. Might have been best to have stayed home if unwell or not been at the cash register touching customer's yarn selections. All said, this is a must see yarn store. If you usually shop at craft stores for yarn, you have to try this specialty store. Really, you do. This is absolutely the best source for yarn & textile tools/accessories in south Denver. Dare I even say luxurious in their selection, but not overpriced for the quality. They carry so many weights, in varied color schemes, from I would say mostly artisanal yarn companies. I have been shopping here for five years and in that time *all* of my projects have turned out better because I was able to find this level of quality for materials. I personally love how many funky dye combinations they have, but when I've made garments for family with nicer & more toned down colors, their selection of merino (ie super wash) wool is great, for example. Moreover, their staff are all lovely and go above and beyond to help you with sourcing yarn for your projects. One of my favorite services they offer is winding hanks into balls/cakes when you purchase their yarn. I haven't used these services but there are associated classes & one-on-one support classes available I believe. Lastly, even though I enjoy supporting a small business and spend more than I went in for, they always have a sale section of yarns marked down so I usually find some things at a discount too. I am happy to say I have frequented here many times , including the last visit, due to the Yarn Along the Rockies yarn crawl. They had by far the best specials going on during this time. 20% off a long list if great yarns and for me I grabbed a sweaters quantity if Brooklyn Tweed's Quarry. 25% off Malabrigo Rios? We grabbed a couple of those skeins for hats. A YATR bag and project bag too. Loved that they included extra goodies in the YATR bag. The variety of different yarns and products are still really great. The people there are super nice and helpful. Since I learned decades ago the knit stitch here, and went back the following week to learn the purl stitch, this place will always have a special place in my fiber loving heart. read more

This yarn store is the best!! The selection and variety is amazing! Has so many accessories for crocheting, cross stitching, and knitting! I found so many Cocoknit products here as well that I couldn't find at other places. The prices are competitive, and many less than other shops around. I have found that ever since I started purchasing from here this year, I have not really wanted to go to other places! The staff is soooo super friendly! I felt right at home from day 1! They are helpful and cheerful... I am able to browse as much as I want and just feel at ease. The store is also roomy to roam. I bring my preschooler with me and they are so sweet to her! I think the only issue I have with Colorful Yarns is that I literally want to bring EVERYTHING HOME WITH ME... especially all in their project bags area, SOOOO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM! Oh my goodness, this place was incredible. I was in town for a couple of days and since I'm a bit obsessed with yarn, I generally like to visit local yarn stores while in a new place, so I went to check this shop out. I thought I'd died and woken up in paradise. I have been to a lot of yarn stores over the years, and I literally have never seen a store with even half as much selection as this place has. And it's all gorgeous, hand-dyed, highest quality stuff, sourced from both local dyers and dyers from around the country. I could barely drag myself away with only six skeins after an hour in there. Utterly incredible. If you love hand-dyed yarn, this place is worth any effort you must make to visit. Love this shop. The ladies are so very nice and helpful. The selection is amazing and they seem to have enough of what you need, even for large projects. OMG! I've never seen so much yarn in my life. Amazing, beautiful, colorful, yarn. The staff was super helpful as I'm new to crochet. I wanted to find something soft, but washable so I can make a hat for a friend. A staff member showed me to the washable wool section and I found something great. They have a whole section in the back that's discounted/on sale and I found some amazing purple baby alpaca. Not sure what I'm going to make, but it's so soft!!!! It's really hard to find good, high quality yarn in the "hobby" stores, so I'm super grateful for places like Colorful Yarns. I can't wait to move to south Denver and have this place be my "go to" yarn store. read more

I also got a few other accessories like yarn markers and a mini pom pom maker. Felt like the prices were fair - more than say, Hobby Lobby, but I felt like the quality was also a level above big box retailers. This is a great knitting store. I am a beginner knitter and sometimes don't know what the best yarns / needles are for a project I want to start. The staff is so helpful with the selection of the right materials. Recently, they even special ordered some yarn for me since they didn't have it in stock. I got the exact type of yarn and color that I wanted and they rolled it all for me. I would rather spend a little more here than at a big retail store to get exactly what I want. Also, the store has so much yarn (of all types and colors) and I just love walking around looking at everything they have. The owner encourages customers to bring in finished projects too. Their clearance section is also very big, which is great if you want to try something new or pick up something extra. Tons of needles including interchangeables by Knit Picks and Knitter's Pride. This place lives up to its name. There are a lot of very colorful yarns in various sizes and fibers. I could easily spend all day here. Too bad I live so far away, but I will certainly be back. I came for the yarn crawl, and I only have 3 days to hit all the stores, so sadly I had to run. The woman working was exceptionally nice and very helpful. She was quite cheery, which I think is the norm for Yarn Along the Rockies, but she wasn't overbearing. She just let me look and enjoy all the yarns. There was a very wide variety of yarns and needles, which I have been hard pressed to find. Typically I have to buy online. Looks like I don't have to now! OK, without question, the friendliest people in the world work here. I curse the fact that I live so far away from it. They're laid back, they've got lots (and lots, and lots) of yarn, and ... I dunno. It's just good stuff. The women who work there are clearly yarn enthusiasts and get excited about the projects you're working on with you. They're your crafty little cheerleaders. When I visited the first time, one of the employees (who I think I'd actually met a few months earlier at a book signing for the Yarn Harlot) was wearing a witty Scrabble shirt. I mean, come ON! People who like to knit AND play Scrabble? We instantly bonded. I have really painted myself to be a dork, haven't I....hrm. Moving on. The location is a weird one, and it's easily overlooked. They actually have their store in a very inconspicuous office building. You'll think you're at the wrong place, but you're not. Go in. Visit. Leave. Go back and visit again. I think for the place, the term "diamond in the rough" really applies. If you have anything to do with yarn, than this is the place to go. I don't know of many people that look for a yarn shop in an office building. The staff is amazing- they are so friendly and so knowledgeable about yarn. And if they can't figure out your problem than they will find someone who will. It really is like yarn heaven though, the walls are covered top to bottom with colorful beauties and they also have a lot of variations from your normal cotton or acrylic, from bamboo to sea kelp blends. Just amazing... amazing how fast my yarn budget went up in smoke! The selection is simply stupendous. Every time I turned around there was another new yarn that somehow wound up in my basket. I had to have my friend pull me out before several months of yarn budget followed their quickly disappearing brethren. Couldn't have been MORE put off about a store. Was in town from Vegas, and in need of a skein or two...called this store and was told they did, indeed, have what I needed, by a very sweet, young girl that answered the phone. That was where the "sweet" ended. Made the trip out to the shop - was not even acknowledged as we walked into and around the shop - even by the table FULL of women. There was a woman at the front "desk" that I approached to ask where I might find the yarn I was looking for. She didn't greet me, either - instead, waited til I told her I had called and said, "Yessss?" I asked if she carried what I was looking for and was told, "Yessss". I then had to ask her if she could kindly SHOW me where in the store it was located, as she never offered more than her "Yes" answers. Was showed, and left to my own devices. NOT what I was told was carried - I ended up leaving empty handed, and not one person offered up a "have a nice day", or "don't let the door hit you on the way out". Not sure, even if it had been the right yarn, that I would have purchased anything at that point! There are far more pleasant shops in town - I just happened to pick the unfriendliest! read more

My favorite yarn store by far. This place is tucked away in the most unassuming place! They are very helpful and you can ask them to order anything that they carry. Diff color etc. and if you don't like the color after you see it, you don't have to buy it either. They even let you knit with the yarn before you buy which help me gage how much I need etc. They let you return your yarn pretty easily too. I usually buy a little more than I need then return the rest when I pick up some more yarn for new project. I usually go in on Sat or Sun since I like the lady at the checkout the most. She is very nice and always love to see what I've been knitting. read more

Carmen and Tiffany are the best! Stacy too! I stopped by without any experience and they took the time to teach me to knit and invite me to their Tuesday Night knitting group. Great place, great prices and they will never will mislead you to make a sale. They just want your project to turn out right. Another high five to the helpful nature of the shop as both customers and owners are willing to help you understand directions and fix mistakes even if you didn't buy your stuff there. A true family owned business that loves what they do. I highly suggest stopping by Tuesday night from (5-8) and joining the knitting group. Its great and a nice release from the work week. read more

This is a large store with a huge selection of yarns, very intimidating for a beginner. I walked around for about 30 minutes then left without buying anything. I was in search of hanks of wool For a needlepoint project and stopped here hoping I could find some. I was almost immediately approached by an employee who offered assistance. She immediately advices me that they did not carry what I was looking for but has another store in mind. She volunteered to call this other store and did so! She even handed me the phone to clarify with the other merchant exactly what I needed. Very friendly, helpful and I wish I could have given her my business. I saw many beautiful yarns on display. My favorite yarn shop! The owner and shop staff are very friendly and always willing to help. You can order yarns if the yarn is not in stock and they will order it for you. The stock rotates quite a bit in this store and the owner really caters to sock knitters. Lots of indie sock dyers, which I adore. I am biased though. This store is not located in the main Streets of Southglenn complex, but in an office building in the perimeter of the parking lot behind the parking structure. I discovered this store on the yarn crawl two months ago and have been back several times since. There is a great yarn and needle selection and the ladies working there are always helpful - shouting out to ask if help is needed. They are friendly and often strke up converastions with customers. I can count on these ladies to help me search for a particular brand or find suitable substitutes. I've come to realize that the regulars who gather to knit at a shop are a good indication of a store's vibe. The women I've met say hello and are very approachable. Once I had questions and the ladies who arrived for the knitting group were very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend visiting Colorful Yarns - there is a ton of parking and conveniently located at the Streets of Southglenn, but away from the congestion. read more
