This odd little shop shares a storefront in downtown Englewood with Anderson's Vacuum/Colorado Shaver Center. The large signs are all for the shaver/vacuum business, so look for the north door that says, "Blazing Star Ranch." The genesis of the business is the ranch in Elizabeth, Colorado where the owners have a herd of 60+ prize-winning alpacas. Much of the wool in the shop comes from this herd, but the owners seek out and represent other local and international craft yarn producers and dyers. Things are a little disorganized and the inventory is limited, but the yarns and raw wools are very unique and interesting. The shop also sells and services equipment for spinning and weaving and offers a roster of intensive classes. This is a very unusual shop, even for the yarn business. Don't let the strange location put you off. This is a great resource for anyone interested in quality yarn or spinning and weaving. This is a company that goes above and beyond for its customers. Quality products, knowledgeable and friendly staff and under promised and over delivered service. Their selection of handcrafted items from local Colorado manufacturers is fantastic. I love their selection of handcrafted items spun alpaca which is so soft and warm. Check out their bespoke finished goods by local artisans. Beautiful work. Keep it up. It's some of the best I've seen in Colorado. The store isn't as well-merchandised as some yarn shops. It's not as quaint or cozy as other yarn stores I've been in previously. There isn't a huge selection of yarns. They do have hand-dyed yarns but the skeins aren't as unique as other hand-dyed yarns I've seen elsewhere. I didn't see anything super-special in the way of hand-dyed yarn. It was mostly similar to what I have seen before. That said. They do have a fair amount of spinning fiber that you usually don't see a lot of at yarn shops. So that is a plus for this store. The woman who spoke to us and explained the merchandise to us was kind and attentive. She was on-the-ready to answer any questions. They do sell some notions. The alpaca yarn they have was from a farm in Colorado. That is special if you are visiting from out-of-town and want to buy yarn specifically from the state of Colorado. I finally made time to take a weaving class from here, and loved the teacher (Mary). It was a nice option that you could rent a loom, which I did, for $15 to use during the class and to use to work your "homework" (basically practicing the basic weaving skills you learned the first day). What I didn't like is they required you to buy the yarn there for the class, and I think this is the first time ever that I didn't get a class discount like 10-20% off on the materials. Also the loom I rented did not have all of the parts so even if I finished my homework early, I wasn't really able to warp another project since I didn't have a threader (during the class I borrowed the teacher's). The instructor, as expected, got us all going pretty quickly. I continued to weave after the 2nd class was done, and recently finished my 2nd scarf. I did get a larger walnut loom and stand that I really love. I can't wait to get going on my next project... Hi Karen, There was not a heddle hook with my loom rental to use even during the class. I borrowed the instructor's (Mary's) to warp my rented loom, so I didn't have one to use to practice warping the loom between the two classes. I was told I needed to buy the yarn there, which even if it isn't required, still would have been nice to get a class discount like most other places do. I am on my 3rd basic weave scarf and look forward to trying out log cabin and herringbone in the future. Thanks for hosting the class. read more

I am most impressed with this fiber, business! They have an incredible variety of spinning wheels, and all things weaving and fiber. There is a selection of yarn, it's not huge, but it is very high-quality with good color choices. Karie was in shop and helped me get going on several different wheels as I am looking to purchase a Majacraft. She let me stick around for several hours spinning and playing and asking too many questions! Thank you so much to her and Karie for creating this incredible business. Spinners paradise! Locally dyed fiber and stalwart standbys at reasonable prices. Plus all the lovely alpaca. If you ask, they'll show you photos of each herd member. If you're wheel shopping, definitely stop by and try several different brands, all set up for demos. Weavers rejoice! Looms and classes await! I don't plan on changing my review. I just wanted to say how excited I was that this shop has expanded. It's rather large now, to include spinning wheels, and, OMG, there are some amazing wheels! LOVE Blazing Star! The other reviewers are right, you do have to hunt a little bit since it's in Anderson's and not immediately obvious where to go, but it's well worth it. Hands down THE destination for spinners (and all fiber artists!) in Denver. I recently bought my first wheel there, and Karen gave me wonderful advice and guidance in choosing the right wheel for me. She even worked with me to find a time we could meet with my work schedule, and stayed late when the store was closing to help me! I'm completely satisfied (thrilled even) with my purchase and thankful to have such an asset nearby to help with spinning. If you're looking to purchase a new wheel, they have a big stock, good prices, and really know their stuff! Karen also raises award winning alpacas and sells their fiber at the shop. They have GORGEOUS alpaca fiber, as well as just about every other kind of fiber you could think of, not to mention finished yarn, both handspun and commercial, as well as knitting, crochet, and weaving supplies, all kinds of spinning supplies, and wheel accessories and attachments. It's a lot of great stuff packed into a small space! Blazing Star is a must-visit if you're in the area and into fiber arts- I'll definitely be back again and again. read more

Great collection of natural based fiber products including a wide collection of local roving and yarns. A lot of alpaca since the owner has a show herd! They have a wide collection of spinning wheels including ashford, kromski, majacraft, schacht and spinolution, as well as rigid heddle looms in stock. If something isn't on hand they are glad to order it for you. Classes are offered for spinning, weaving and knitting and fiber prep as well. I was floored at the quality of wheels, fiber, and yarn in this tiny space. I came in looking for a new wheel. Lisa was a huge help with the wheels, explaining the differences between them, and giving her thoughts on which ones were right for me. Choosing a wheel can be a daunting task. Her advice and help were spot on! She also helped adjust my Sonata and got some duct tape to seal my oil so it didn't leak on the way home. If you're looking for a wheel, I'd highly recommend coming here. If you're looking for fiber or yarn, Blazing Star is also a great stop. Just head into the vacuum shop and go to the back. There are two rooms. The one on the left has yarn and the alpaca goodies. The one on the right has the wheels, fiber, books, magazines, needles, and more. What a find! read more

I can not believe his shop doesn't have more reviews! It is such an AMAZING space for anyone interested In fiber arts. ( knitting, weaving, spinning, etc...) The shop owner is incredible kind and helpful and a plethora of information. You definitely and quickly realize her passion for her art and for her alpacas! ( if you're lucky maybe she'll show you the live feed of her alpaca farm!) it was an absolute pleasure shopping here. Although the space is small (and inside a vaccuum shop) The merchandise is gorgeous and plentiful , and the prices and very reasonable! I will definitely be returning here many times in the future to check out the classes and buy lots more soft, beautiful yarn. read more

What a find! Tucked away in a vacuum store of all places ( Anderson's Vacuums- also worth a trip just to meet the owner Mike), this place is a gem for fiber freaks. Lots of homegrown alpaca in various forms, but also a nice selection of other fibers too. They carry a hearty selection of roving as well as Schact and Ashford spinning wheels and a few little looms. I want to start by saying The Blazing Star Ranch sign in the window has been replaced by a much smaller sign that says something to the effect that they have yarn. I didn't read past reviews so thoroughly telling readers this store is at the back of a vacuum store. With that out of the way, I agree with all the previous reviews. The owner wasn't there when I stopped in because she was spending the day caring for the alpacas. Lisa was there and so nice, helpful, and patient with this somewhat beginning knitter. Visiting from Maryland, I wanted local product that I wouldn't be able to get back East. Lisa was very good at pointing out all their local dyers, etc. Yes, it's small but worth supporting this gem of a business. read more

I was here for the first time during the yarn crawl in August. This shop is tiny!!!! Tiny tiny!!! So the selection is very limited. But wow! Are the people there nice! So friendly, and kind. They would get 4 stars for selection but 6 for customer service!!! read more

Stopped in for some Texsolv today and came home with a drop spindle and roving as well! Found this place two years ago during the yarn crawl. One of the few places in the metro area that carries spinning supplies and lots of wonderful fiber to spin! I bought my first spinning wheel from this store. Karen, the owner, ordered it for me, put it together and threw in a few ounces of fiber to get me started! There is a parking lot in back of the building, but I've never had trouble finding a spot on the street right in front of the store! She also has lots of beautiful handspun yarn for sale. It's a real treat to go to her store, but be forewarned -- if you think you're just going in to browse, there's a very good chance you will not leave empty-handed. I know I never do! ;D read more
