My first piece fired and glazed at Stone Leaf. So much fun!

Guys. If you want to start a new hobby in 2014, I *HIGHLY* recommend pottery! Stone Leaf is such a great place to go and learn what's up with this craft. Classes are affordable and flexible: you can learn throwing on the wheel, hand-building, and many other techniques. I joined Stone Leaf in September 2013; my class time is on Sunday mornings. My instructors and studio mates have been so helpful and patient whenever I had questions/needed extra guidance on techniques. The instructors and helpers are more than happy to walk you through a process until you feel comfortable doing it on your own. Also, a BIG plus for me is the Open Studio time throughout the week. These are times when, if you have some time to kill or are itching to throw a little, you can visit during the Open Studio hours. These visits don't count towards your class card, though (which is why that's a plus!). The few times I've attended Open Studio have been wonderful; usually the pottery retail store will be open at the same time, so I like to peruse the store to see what I may need in terms of glazes, supplies, clay, etc. Everybody at Stone Leaf is so kind and helping. Say hello to the staff and your fellow studio mates! They're always happy to chat while they're building :) Highly recommended!

I hadn't…read moreheard of the Jackalope Arts festival, which apparently appears every year just up the street from me in Olde Arvada. We went out on this sunny and warm October day, glad to enjoy some time outdoors in the sun. We were greeted, as well, with an enjoyable stroll through local venue booths sporting everything from beeswax products to locally mixed spices to jewelry made from local stones (think petrified wood and Marble's marble, among many others). I was drawn to the designs at a T-shirt shop, and when I couldn't find my size in the design I wanted, they assured me that I could email them and they would make it for me and send it along to my home. The jewelry maker at Waystone (mywaystone.com) promised that if I could bring her a piece of petrified wood that I had discovered in my backyard, she would make it into something special to display in my home. While she accepts items through mail, since she is just down I-70 just east of Denver, I mean to bring it right to her. I was excited to visit this arts fair, and came away with some nice items, along with the cards of some artisans to whom I will reach out for some custom items. What a great way to spend a glorious fall day outside!

When I got home I realized that the frame was cracked, chipped, and wasn't even in any original packaging (found this out once I went to a different location to return it). The inside sheet with the sizing was all crumpled up like it had been returned before. Then I needed to order a mat for the frame. This is probably the most irritating thing I've ever had to do. Whoever works in framing is so slow, only talked in questions, has no clue what she is doing, and talks rudely. I'm pretty dumfounded that someone like that can even work there. When I ordered the mat it was as if she had no clue how to do anything or even know what mats they had. "I think we have these, I think it's this price" etc. It took a whopping 30-45 minutes just for her to make this order and give me the receipt. Should have taken not even 5 minutes because I knew what I wanted. When I went to pick up the mat, she couldn't find it, proceeded to ask me "is this one the right one?", like how am I supposed to know. For her to just say "well I think this might be it so here you go". When opening the order herself, she asked me "Can't you help!" all snarky, backhanded, and rude. Like what do you mean, this is your job, and how do you think you can talk to a customer like that? Get home to find out it is either the incorrect order or made incorrectly. It's for a 24 x 36 inch frame and is literally cut larger than that. I repeatedly said it needed to be 24 x 36 inches, for it be cut 1/4 to 1/2 inch larger on each side. How hard is it to cut 2 feet by 3 feet? How hard is it to label an order with a name or even just an order number? I then had to call 5 times just to be connected to framing because they kept denying the transfers. At least they are remaking it, crossing my fingers I'll actually get what I ordered. Will definitely NEVER be going back to this location. I debated on not even trying to go there again for the remake and going to a different location, so we'll see how this continues. Extremely disappointed.

Amy who owns the business and teaches the classes is a great teacher, an excellent potter, and has an amazing attitude. In a class like this people's pots fall, or they mess up a throw often as they learn but Amy has such an optimistic attitude and helps people come up with what purpose their new creation can serve. Amy clearly works very hard to make this a place for artists to bloom and discover themselves, which is intoxicating. The studio is well equipped and while taking a class you can come in outside of class time to throw and practice. This is a great opportunity to practice and get more wheel time outside of the two hours of class a week. They also offer painting and have lots of fun things to paint with many beautiful glazes!

If you're interested in classes or looking for a fun activity then you should definitely check out Potter's Touch. I've been to a few other studios in the metro area and none of them come close to the quality, commitment, and overall experience as Potter's Touch.
