Guys. If you want to start a new hobby in 2014, I *HIGHLY* recommend pottery! Stone Leaf is such a great place to go and learn what's up with this craft. Classes are affordable and flexible: you can learn throwing on the wheel, hand-building, and many other techniques. I joined Stone Leaf in September 2013; my class time is on Sunday mornings. My instructors and studio mates have been so helpful and patient whenever I had questions/needed extra guidance on techniques. The instructors and helpers are more than happy to walk you through a process until you feel comfortable doing it on your own. Also, a BIG plus for me is the Open Studio time throughout the week. These are times when, if you have some time to kill or are itching to throw a little, you can visit during the Open Studio hours. These visits don't count towards your class card, though (which is why that's a plus!). The few times I've attended Open Studio have been wonderful; usually the pottery retail store will be open at the same time, so I like to peruse the store to see what I may need in terms of glazes, supplies, clay, etc. Everybody at Stone Leaf is so kind and helping. Say hello to the staff and your fellow studio mates! They're always happy to chat while they're building :) Highly recommended! read more

The folks at Stone Leaf are some of the most accommodating, knowledgable and enthusiastic people I have encountered. The store has anything and everything you would want or need for your pottery endeavors and if they happen to be missing something, they are more than willing to get that ordered into the store and call you when it can be picked up! This place is amazing! It's a little off the beaten path. If you don't know exactly where it is, you very well might drive right past it. I signed up for a pottery class through Colorodo Free University. They had a contract with Stone Leaf, where CFU recruits the students and the students get to use Stone Leaf's studio and are taught by Stone Leaf instructors. The studio is very large. The people are friendly, and they allow dogs! They do have a lot of rules, but all of the rules are in place to protect hand made items from breaking and to help students have the best experience possible. After the CFU class, they offered discounts to continue courses through their studio. I was offered 20% off my next series of classes! I gladly accepted. They are pretty flexible in their classes as well. If you want to work on the wheel, the instructor will help in any way you need. If you want to glaze or do some hand building, then the instructor is happy to do whatever they can do assist you. You can alternate, and even choose to do something different than the rest of the students. It's totally up to you. They are there to encourage and support you. I had a difficult time understanding many of the concepts in the first two classes. The instructors were extremely patient with me and by the third class, I was really getting the hang of it! The best part is that they offer Open Studio to all of their students. If you are enrolled in classes, you can come to Stone Leaf Pottery any time they offer Open Studio and practice for free. Open Studio hours do not count as classes so they are basically a bonus. The only thing you have to pay for is for your materials fees. Since they recycle all of their unfired clay, you aren't charged materials fees unless you have a piece fired in the kiln. You could throw 50 pots and never fire one, and never be charged a fee! It's a great place to practice and to learn. read more

Stone Leaf is a good studio, in that is one of the only ones in the Denver Metro area that has a studio membership option rather than make you take a class. All of the staff are very nice, and it is usually a pretty welcoming atmosphere, but I can't say I've been very satisfied with my membership here. For one, the provided glaze selection is very small, and if you want to buy your own glazes they have to be okay-ed by staff. As well, there is no high fire or Raku oven because of a "smell problem" one of the staff has. Because of this smell problem you are not allowed to wear any perfumed scents or lotions. One day I forgot that I had on lavender lotion and was kicked out of the studio, and rather rudely to boot, and not even given the option to try to wash the lotion off. As well, the firing fees are mega high, so even though the studio membership is not bad, if you want to fire any of your pieces it's going to cost you. It is a very nice studio though, with a lot of useful equipment and all of the wheels, slab roller etc work very well. read more

I am a student at Stone Leaf and have been since last fall. I have to say that I absolutely LOVE it!!! Everyone that works there is very knowledgeable about all of the aspects of working in clay - from the different techniques (hand-building, slump molding, throwing on the wheel, etc), through the very complex process of glazing and firing. The classes are free-form so you can utilize the instructor team to your best advantage by focusing on what your passion is. One of the greatest elements is that there are multiple instructors and each of them is so different. You can study with any and/or all of them in order to leverage the knowledge of each teacher. I have to say, I never walk away from a class without learning something very valuable. :) In addition, I have never worked in a studio that is so big, clean, well laid out, cheerful, and inviting. When I got back into pottery, I was a little worried about working with so many other artists and students because pieces get broken, or someone else's work blows up in the kiln and takes yours with it -- I have even had pieces of mine "disappear" in the past. But not at Stone Leaf! I never have to worry about the safety of the pieces that I have put so much work into. And, because of the way the studio is set up, I have even found inspiration in the works of some of the other artists and student's work. And the store.... that is the cherry on top! I don't have to go any further to find all of the products that my muddy heart desires than the studio itself. Since all of the staff there are so knowledgeable, I get great advice and recommendations on everything from tools, to clay bodies, to glazes, and so much more! If you have a heart for clay, Stone Leaf is a find that you will treasure - come and check it out for yourself! You won't regret it :) read more

Good things take time. My husband ordered a Skutt KM Firebox 8x6 Kiln for my Christmas gift several weeks prior to Christmas. After continuing to call them to see where it was (as they said it would be there in time no problem), it arrived in Denver on Dec. 23rd, 2 days prior to Christmas. Problem, they use some shipping company they don't know the name of or have a phone number for, just a email address, and they could not get it from the shipper. In fact we did not get it till January 6, exactly 2 weeks later. Of course at no fault of their own. Totally out of Stone Leaf's control. And for ruining my Christmas gift they would give us $50 off. I did a google search for this Kiln to discover a online unit that is the exact same unit that we paid $838.11 for, sells for $588.88, no tax, no shipping and guess what they use UPS and FedX, real shipping companies. We paid 1/3 more than we needed too for shopping local. On top of messing up our Christmas. But don't worry Stone Leaf offers a price match on their website... note they have a line in there that they may not be able to match such great prices. Which they didn't, but they would give us a half the amount they should have refunded CASH in a gift certificate to Stone Leaf. No mention of that trick in their price match. You don't really get your money back, SURPRISE!! read more

This is a great place if you are a super beginner, or intimidated by pottery, or not sure what you want to do, like I was. I have always used Stone Leaf for all ceramic studio needs at home and for the art department I run at our school. They have great advice and recommendations for folks that fix wheels and kilns to boot. So when the guy they recommended came to the school and said "it's time to retire that wheel" we turned to Stone Leaf. We were excited to find that the wheel we wanted (Brent CXC) was marked down/on sale on their website. Rather than be able to put it in the 'cart' it said we had to call in our order. Fine. But when I called, I was told that they wouldn't give me the price listed on their own web site, that it was not the right price anymore. What? The date mentioned on the sale was correct. hum? I was then bumped off to the owner, who called me later that day, and offered me the same wheel (as was being advertised as 'on sale') for 300.00 more than their own asking price, with a huge wait period as well. This was a total put off. So, I am now looking online. We have a thousand plus to spend. I would have liked to have given it to Stone Leaf. It really left me feeling pretty yucky. Otherwise, Stone Leaf is our go-to place for supplies, and will continue to be, mostly. read more

I've never had a gripe about Stone Leaf until today. They've always been friendly and helpful. However, they have stopped answering their phones. I called them 4 times today to see if they had a certain kind of clay and finally gave up in frustration and drove down from the mountains. They didn't have what I wanted. A simple answering of the phone would have prevented me from making an unnecessary trip to Arvada. If you have a business, please make sure you have a human being answering the phone. read more

The people who work at Stone Leaf are super friendly and very nice, however, don't count on anything being done in a timely manner. I really wanted to purchase my pottery supplies from a local store rather than ordering from a big online store but I waited (and at the time of writing this am STILL waiting) on my order to come in for MANY weeks. When I placed my order, I was assured that most items would be in stock and the rest would be received within a week. Two weeks after that... and only part of the order was received and I was told it would be an additional 2 weeks to get it delivered because they were so backed up. I finally just went and picked up everything myself because I couldn't wait any longer. Then "the rest," of my order came in, 2 weeks after that... except that it didn't and the final parts are estimated to be another 2 weeks out. It must be a geographical phenomenon- 2 weeks from everywhere! So while I have enjoyed the people I've interacted with, I have been really disappointed in the customer service and timeliness. Sadly, I think in the future I will have to stick with a big online store so I am not left hanging out to dry unable to fire my pottery. read more

I've been to many pottery/ceramics supply stores. Most are good, some are not, but a few are great. Stone Leaf is great. They don't have everything...but they can probably get it for you if you want. I do think that they *know* everything tho. There is always someone who has a useful answer for your question. And sometimes they answer questions you didn't even know you had. They helped me set up a kiln when I knew absolutely nothing. Everything worked the very first time! Sadly, I have moved out of Colorado and will be bereft of their guidance in the future :-( . I will miss them, and the friendly dogs, more than I can say. read more

It was interesting to read the review warning others about the Stone Leaf crew not getting anything done in a timely manner, because on the flip-side they are EXTREMELY rigid about enforcing timelines on others. I just finished taking a series of ceramics classes from them and although, yes, the instructors who taught the class were very friendly, nice and sweetly patient with my novice skills, the people who manage the studio stepped in as soon as my classes ended and trashed the piece I was most proud of and excited to finish up and bring home. If you take classes from Stone Leaf, make sure you understand their system because depending on who on staff you ask, you may be told different things. The cost of the misunderstanding could be something you've worked hard to create and trust me, they are fast to throw your stuff out :( Although this experience has left me feeling disappointed and resolved that I won't return to Stone Leaf myself, I agree with others that the instructors do a nice job, the studio has a great feel and they have all the supplies and tools you need to learn and experience. Getting your hands in clay and creating something beautiful feels really good. Feels even better if you get to keep it and use it for years to come..... read more
