The manager comes out and says we have been working since 10 am and we need a break. Tells me that they are tired and that I should leave the place or sit somewhere else with what he believes it's more suitable for us to sit. Bad management and staff. First stop on any day trip to area for antique shoping, foliage, Bear Mtn treaks etc. Really decent pub food of all sorts and nice and HUGE outdoor seating area in nice weather. True to the name, Metro-North trains whiz by periodically, mere feet away from the restaurant. Best on menu: Fish-n-Chips and burgers and surprisingly okay nachos. We think the prices are just a bit inlflated for what you get , and the high school staff a tad surly, but overall this is a safe bet for the area. At the end of main drag and steps from several good shops including a large antique "mall". read more

The Depot is my usual stop when visiting Cold Spring as they have a wonderfully spacious outdoor seating area and their prices are fairly decent. I've never eaten inside so I cannot attest for the indoor atmosphere but while outdoors you are seated adjacent to the train tracks and amongst a beautiful garden and gazebo. I've only ever had their pub food (burgers, chili, fish and chips, etc...) which is typical but they do offer some more pricey and 'elaborate' entrees such as steak and tuna; of which I have never had so therefore have no comment. While visiting this past Saturday I learned they have a brunch menu which is available until 4pm on both Saturday's and Sunday's. The dinner menu is OK but is pretty limited. I would have liked to have seen some more salad or sandwich options. One of the major draws to this place -- and is pretty much the reason why I come whenever visiting Cold Spring -- is they are dog friendly. As long as you sit outside (obvi) they allow your best friend to dine alongside you. They even bring your four legged friend a cold bowl of water -- perf after a long day of walking in the hot sun. Unfortunately, I experienced some pretty bazaar service this past weekend. The hostess acted as if she were on another planet and did a horrible job of managing the long line of hungry diners. We ended up waiting about 30-45 mins for a table when (oddly enough) there were plenty of outdoor tables which remained vacant. As the ravenous crowd grew increasingly hostile, the hostess assured us these tables remained unused so she didn't overload the kitchen. Interesting explanation but I have worked in the restaurant industry, at one point working as an [awesome] hostess, and not once have a I ever heard of this seating strategy. I think the Depot should do themselves a favor and hire someone who isn't 16 -- or has a brain. Aside from my strange hostess encounter, our waiter was fairly normal and just did what he needed to do. He wasn't too chatty and only came over at the appropriate times. I would recommend The Depot to anyone who loves their dog and is looking for a relaxing place to unwind after a long day of hiking or antiquing. read more

Food price / quality ratio 8.5. Atmosphere is antique train station with large outdoor seating area. We split the Depot 2 Turkey sandwich with rosemary mayo and pear chutney. Very good. The french fries are not house cut, so we substituted a "salad" which was just a pile of greens thrown on a plate, zero effort/creativity. Overall, I'd say middle of the road as far as menu choices. Hit up this place with my sister in late April, so it wasn't the height of the season. Had a great black and blue burger, a beer, the brussel sprouts appetizer and the chorizos for dessert. Sat outside in the back of the restaurant. We both liked the food a lot, however, the service is lacking in many ways. Service is slow; they never asked if we wanted a second drink, I had to ask for refills on my coffee and had to call for the check as well. It's just irritating because the prices are fairly high here for this type of food and the place was a little busy but not crazy. Also had to ask for two plates to share the appetizer. Loved the food, hated the service and wasn't crazy about the prices. Our bill came to $65 with tip for lunch! I'd go back but knowing all the above and I sure as heck wouldn't order as much food. My fiancé and I stopped here after hiking breakneck Ridge. The place couldn't have been the more perfect for a post hike eatery. We sat outside in their beautifully shaded patio and as a plus was allowed to bring our dog to sit next to us. The manager was kind enough to bring the dog a bowl of water. The food was great and reasonably priced and vegetarian friendly. They had about five craft beers on tap including Flying Fish and five commercial beers such as Coors. The establishment is right next to a train line so you will hear and see an Amtrak going by every 10 to 15 minutes. Our postmeal activity included a short walk to the waterfront with a very large dock, which was coincidently timed perfectly as the sun was setting over Storm King mountain and provided a beautiful view of the Hudson and the sunset. I look forward to boating season every year so I can come here. Multiple times a year, my friends and I will dock as guests at the Cold Spring Yacht Club and walk up to The Depot. The outdoor seating arrangements next to the railroad tracks are very relaxing, especially with all the different shrubbery and quiet atmosphere. Each outdoor table has an umbrella to keep the sunlight or rain away. At nighttime, the lights are strategically placed away from the tables so the bugs do not come near your food and also to keep a low-lit atmosphere. The service is always great. The waiters/waitresses always check back continuously to make sure everything is okay. They are professional but still act friendly and will make small talk with you. The food comes out at an average speed and is always cooked to perfection. If you order a burger well done, it will come out well done. The food is a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. I can't wait for boating season to get here. My friends and I are already looking forward to taking our boats over here and sitting outside eating dinner on a warm, summer night. read more

Service was very friendly. Food was on the mediocre side but we had the all you can eat BBQ for $20 per person. I wish I had ordered off the menu instead. I had a burger and some corn on the cob which tasted like your basic BBQ food. I also had some baked beans and shrimp cocktail which wasn't impressive at all. I didn't want seconds on anything. I also ordered a frozen Margarita which was OK but nothing spectacular. The bill with tip was $150 for 4 adults who had 5 drinks. Probably wouldn't recommend the Friday night BBQ. This might be a nice place to hang out with friends on a summer night for a beer and appetizers and I have to stress that the staff was very nice. We were there sat 7/25/20. Hostess was bitchy and the way she handled keeping track of who to seat next was ridiculous. When she finally sat us (with attitude) we were waited on by a very nice waitress. While she was nice, she was not very good. Asked for refills multiple times before we actually got them. Part of the problem is the staff prefers to stand around talking to each bee serving customers. . At one point hostess walked by with a spray bottle of cleaner and pointed it at my dog and pretended to spray. They are not using full menu due to covid and food is average at best. Owners relies too much on cute location and not enough on service. Location is cute but you have to pause conversation everytime a train goes by as it is literally on the other side of the fence from where you eat. We've been there many times BUT. Note to owner: the snotty hostess working the night we were there... just lost our business for you. Update: I appreciate feedback from owner. To be honest we have been there many times and have always enjoyed it. We have even had casual conversation with owner more than once. While the train is noisy, it is part of the charm for us but I'm sure not all. BUT Honestly the night we were there we were the service was NOT good. I get the covid challenges and understand the limited menu BUT you should also appreciate the customers who are still coming out and supporting you during these difficult times. 17 years old - first job or not this girl was unpleasant with us and others and you should be aware of that. Our waitress was adorable and sweet but not very efficient (just being honest) but we were in no rush so it was fine. I would think when a regular customer leaves a negative review it might be better to apologize for our experience rather than make excuses and suggest we take everything into consideration. I'm with Lindsay - not only does the place look like an old train depot and have the word depot in the name, but if one even glances behind the fence they can't help but notice the active railroad tracks there. So, don't be surprised if a train goes by. It really did not bother me when it happened - yeah, you can't hear someone talk for about 6 seconds, but it's not the end of the world. I was recently there (yesterday, actually). Cold Spring is a great place to be on a Sunday afternoon, so me and a friend went there for food, as we were famished. In hindsight, we should have eaten elsewhere (for the food), but I must say the atmosphere is not to be beat. Sitting outside on a nice day, watching the motorcycles (which I always appreciate) and people go by is always fun. Having a good beer and company while doing so makes it even better. I found the food to be so-so (I had a burger) but Jenn's Shepherd's pie looked pretty good, and when I ate the leftovers today they were good. The service was not so good, actually, but it was sort of busy, and I think they were understaffed. I would not hold it against them. One more thing - on weekend afternoons there is often a live band plying at The Depot. Band was pretty good yesterday, and the times I've walked by - a plus for the atmosphere. I actually ate there last winter, too, when one cannot eat outside, and the food was much better. The atmosphere inside is a little dark though, and overall I think I prefer food that is not as good, but a great outdoor atmosphere. Went here with the family. Really quaint town about 15 mins from WP Thayer gate. It has some indoor and outdoor seating and is right next to the commuter train tracks so expect the trains to go by which is neat. We all had burgers and you have the option of fries or a side salad. Food was delicious and there is extensive beer list to choose from including bottled beer and mixed drinks. Atmosphere is really relaxing and is dog friendly on the patio. read more

Our experience was all good. We had a short wait for our table and the waiter was pleasant. Loved the patio area and the trains going by. Two of us ordered burgers. Very tasty and I really liked the bun. I had ordered a salad to come with my burger and got fries by accident. The waiter remembered before I said anything and brought me the salad. One of my kids got the wings of fire. While they weren't as spicy as he was use to he did enjoy them. Last kid got the fish and chips. The cole saw that came with the fish was homemade! I can't stand it when the cole show in all of Dutchess county tastes the same (Sysco). We wrapped up our dinner with prompt polite service. Tip: we ate a little early. I think was a band setting up. Stopped here on a random drive to the area. It was warm enough to sit outside which is one my favorite things to do. I had my two small dogs with me which were welcome on the patio section. Took a while to get service and when we did, the waiter did not know the answer to some of the questions we had about the drink and food menu. He had to run in and out a few times between checking on the available beer and coming back to tell us that they were out of a few ingredients to make a coctail. However, we were not in a rush, and had no problem adjusting our first choice of drinks. We eventually ordered food which we were pleased with. The patio is relaxing and refreshing. Would come back here and give it another shot. Been here twice now, after a brutal hike up Breakneck Ridge. Nothing better than a cold beer and burger after putting your legs thru a vertical workout! Love sitting outside on a nice day, the trains flying by are part of the charm. The food is ok, decent burgers and great crispy fries. Chicken pot pie looks decadent. However, a note about the host service: the kid (who looked to be about 15) who was seating everyone took more than his sweet time taking each party to a table, and more sweet time coming back to get the next party. I didn't expect him to run, but he was averaging about 5 minutes per party. Now I realize I lack the laid back attitude that people outside of the city might have, but seriously? Some of us were contemplating seating ourselves at one of the 5 open tables within our view. They really need to work on this a little. Otherwise, it's a charming place to enjoy some food and drinks after a gorgeous hike. read more

Beautiful setting in Cold Spring. Depot old Amtrack station. Both Metro North and Amtrak Train still passes by periodically and whoosh by and occasionally blow their horns! We sat in the outside area which is nicely arranged with tables and umbrellas in a very warm flowery setting. We never went into the Depot so I cant comment on the inside. Food was good. We ordered a Blue Cheese Burger and a Traditional burger Med Rare but they were more medium but the meat was good so didnt send it back. French Fries were outstanding...nice and crisp. I saw other dishes on the tables like wraps, regular and Cuban sandwiches et. al. The service was great for a Saturday afternoon. Cold Spring is a beautiful town with a nice Main Street with shops and antiques stores. We will return To cold Spring and The CSD Restaurant will be on the agenda to be visited again on an equally beautiful day! read more

Have to give high marks for the experience: this place is just so darn cozy and inviting, with a fire going in the winter, and our waitress was so sweet and helpful, even bringing us samples of beer to figure out what we wanted. The food is decent: nothing insanely visionary, but good and filling-- our burger was cooked perfectly medium rare and hit the spot, and the asparagus spinach soup of the day was truly excellent. And of course it's hard to mess up a basket of truffle fries, those are a must. If you can handle it, the pork quesadilla is major, and is quite filling. My favorite thing might have been the winter salad, which had a really excellent truffle-honey mustard dressing and paired wonderfully with the slices of pear in it. They have a decent variety of domestic and craft beers on draft, which makes it a great place to relax and grab a drink after a hike, which has become a little tradition for our family. read more

Cozy place next to some train tracks. Full of books, painted murals, and a large outdoor seating area with shade. Came after hiking up in Bear Mountain - so honestly, any food was going to be good food and devoured with minimal delay. Service felt a bit slow (but it was 4th of July, and we were hungry and starving). Our appetizers came out after our meals. The food was fine - fried chicken was crisp and moist, chicken wings had a good flavor to them, the coleslaw portion is about the size of my thumb and not really enough to count as a "side". I went there with a group of 10 people this afternoon and, despite the free tables next to each other, the man who was sitting the tables did nothing to accommodate us. Even after we agreed to split into different tables, he would not listen to our suggestions on how we could sit together. This contributed to an overall regrettable experience leaving us with no disposition to ever come back. read more

This was our first visit to Cold Spring and a local recommended this place to us for lunch. They have a great outdoor patio area but since it was so hot we decided to eat inside. Our server was very friendly and came check in on us frequently. Based on his recommendation I ordered the pull pork quesadillas, my sister got the fried chicken and we got truffle fries to share. I was very happy with the quesadillas, the pulled pork was very flavorful and juicy! The truffle fries were also really good and we got a huge basket of them. Overall the portions were very large and we weren't able to finish all of our food. I really liked the indoor dining area, it's decorated like a study so b you feel like you're in a library. I was surprised by the great books that they had available for diners to browse as you wait for your meal. If we're back in Cold Spring we will definitely make a return visit! read more

I just made my summer pilgrimage to Cold Spring, NY to partake in my annual antique browsing among the many stores there. However, no trip in my book would be complete without a visit to the Cold Spring Depot for a meal. This time I was greeted by two cheerful hostesses, Alexa and Tanika, who, although I informed them I was a party of one, were still equally attentive in seeing that I got a table as soon as possible. They kept me constantly informed as to the status of my upcoming table, and I was seated outdoors on the patio in 15 to 20 minutes. Once seated, I was greeted by an equally pleasant server, Anthony G. He took my order promptly, and when my food was delivered, after about a 20 to 25 minute wait, kept my iced tea glass refilled and brought out extra sugar. Anything I wanted was a "no problem" in his play book. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. I'm looking forward to my return trip to Cold Spring and the Cold Spring Depot. Alexa, Tanika and Anthony G. make the experience of dining there a very special occasion. One suggest for improvement....please add Merlot to your wine by the glass list. read more

Looked at the tough reviews on this place but I found the staff welcoming and the food awesome. I had the French onion dip steak sandwich which was a real sirloin steak with cheese and some delicious fries. Service was awesome and the outdoor patio made it a great experience. My son and I wanted to try something different and decided to go into Cold Spring. We ate at the Cold Spring Depot and enjoyed our meal. I had a double portabella burger (vegetarian) and my son had the shepard's pie. The food was very good. The service was quick and the server was nice. The place has a lot of character. Pretty much what you'd expect. Pretty uninventive average menu in a pleasant rail depot building. Boring vegetarian options, but not bad. But the caprese salad (described on the menu as "local tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil" or somesuch) came sprinkled with dried basil flakes, rather than fresh basil leaves. Weak. Our server was pleasant enough, and my fries were oddly superfried to the point there was barely any potato left inside the crispy shell, but it was pretty good, really. It is what it is. read more
