Our Yelp Elite crew was out in Cold Spring looking for food when we happened to walk into Doug's Pretty Good Pub. After eating there, I can confidently say Doug, your pub makes pretty good food. Our party of four was seated at a high-top, and the feasting began. They've got a great beer selection and took care of us right away. Food-wise, we started with the chicken wings, which were huge and packed with flavor. For me, the main event was the original patty melt. You know when something tastes homemade, but in the absolute best way possible? That was this burger. It was hot, juicy, and dripping with flavor, with perfectly caramelized onions and melted cheese. What really made it work was the bread, it still had a crunch instead of turning soggy. Every dip into the Thousand Island just made it better. The onion rings were a perfect sidekick. Around the table, my brother-in-law went with the Nutty Hog and enjoyed it, my sister liked her quesadilla, and my wife was happy with her chicken. No complaints anywhere. Doug's pretty good pub is a no-frills cozy little place in the cute little town of Cold Spring. Our waitress was really friendly and chill. The menu is tiny, and primarily burgers. The burgers are served on English muffins, which I've never seen before. I'm not the biggest fan of English muffins, but it seemed to be their specialty, I figured I'd try it and I'm glad I did! It was, as the restaurant name suggests, pretty good! I got The Burger and added pepperjack, which was exactly what it was needed. Really enjoyed this place. Is a quiet homey pub - nicely located close to the trails. We went there for some beer and sustenance after our long hike. I tried the Roscoe amber and my friends tried the upward lager. Both were really good and served at the right temperature. The salmon burger I had was very good - tasty moist and with good condiments. Everyone's food on the table was fantastic. My only gripe is that the portion size for a $18.5 price point was small maybe the burger needed to be bigger - just wasn't enough food. Great service and place though. I rarely leave negative reviews because I respect how much business owners rely on them. I thought about this for several days before deciding to share my experience--because what happened was simply unacceptable. My friend and I visited this establishment, and she brought her trained service animal--a small, well-behaved mini poodle. The bartender immediately and loudly told us we were not welcome because of the dog. When my friend explained that it was a service animal, he snapped that he "didn't care." It wasn't just what he said, but how he said it--aggressively, condescendingly, and loud enough for the whole room to hear. It was not only rude, but also illegal to deny entry to someone with a service animal. And in a town like Cold Spring, which is known for being dog-friendly, it was especially shocking. But what really pushed this over the edge was what happened as we were leaving. My friend, clearly upset, was quietly speaking to me when the bartender barked at her, "I'm just doing my job" and my friend said, "I wasn;t talking to you" and he said "But you're still yapping with your mouth!" I was completely stunned. Who talks like that to anyone, let alone a customer? My friend hadn't said anything to him directly to warrant such a demeaning and unprovoked remark. It felt like a deliberate attempt to humiliate us. The tone he took with her was hostile, and frankly, I couldn't help but wonder if he would have spoken that way to a man. I seriously doubt it. It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in an establishment completely unwarranted, escalating from 0 to 100 in seconds, and deeply disrespectful on every level. If this is how this business treats people and service animals they should not be open to the public, in my opinion. read more

This place was pretty good. Got some cold draft beers and each got a burger and fries. Fries were crispy and the burgers were solid. Not far from metro north, pretty fast service, casual atmosphere. Still recommending Doug's pub! It's been so long since I've been bc I'm never there when it's open. Made my own burger with some chipotle mayo, onions and pepper Jack cheese. Local beers and full bar if beer isn't your thing. It wasn't that busy around 6 pm on a Saturday night. Unfortunately no outside seating for nice nights. Will definitely be back. Great chill vibes and good food. Burger will cost you 18/19 bucks but that's the going rate these days to keep small business alive! read more

Fantastic spot to stop by for a quick bite or a great meal made with actual care. 10/10 service from the bar tender with a wealth of knowledge with local breweries they have on tap. The pub is a cozy with a timely touch of a midwesterner theme that fits the historic ambiance of Cold Springs, it's not the largest that will up charge and can accommodate at least 4-6 people per table. If you're just need a seat at the bar there's plenty of space available! Try their Teriyaki and Honey glazed Brussel sprouts, even if the the owner Doug doesn't quite like Brussels himself. read more

A nice little local corner bar reminiscent of the 1970s. It has a fairly decent menu. We tried the original patty melt which we ordered medium plus, but it arrived medium rare and mushy in the center. The waitress did take care of it right away and it came back cooked perfectly and was delicious. The sweet potato fries were good. I always look forward to getting a burger at Doug's place! This year, on our visit to Cold Spring, I had the "Bleu, Swine and Tears" burger, and (seriously) it was the best burger I've EVER eaten (and I'm 76 years old)! It comes with bleu cheese but I got carried away and added some American on top of that! It was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious! We have to check out of our B&B tomorrow, and Doug's won't be open yet, but we're going to hang around until he's open at noon, and I'm going to have one again! The bartender was a "one man band" and handled the bar and the whole dining room by himself (as a server), beautifully! The restaurant is neat (cleanliness-wise) and decorated with great memorabilia. The unfortunate part about Doug's is the days/hours that they're open. They're closed Monday and Tuesday and open late in the day until the weekend. BE CAREFUL when entering and leaving the building! The steps are oddly spaced and uneven! Other than that,Doug's burgers will hold a dear space in my heart! read more

Hostile landlord of burger joint with pub pretensions. The landlord was very rude and aggressive when my son and I stepped into his "pub" for lunch and drinks today. Literally just as we walked through the door he strode up to me, got in my face and aggressively said "We don't have any seats, we're at full capacity, and there are people waiting!!" I was momentarily stunned by his very abrupt, rude, aggressive behavior, and just said in response "Ok". There was no "Hello, I'm afraid we don't have any tables available, and there are people waiting, so I'd suggest you come back later" (Doug, if you are reading this, perhaps write that down on the back of your hand, and study it, as you've obviously no idea how to speak to customers in a civilized manner!). THEN, after I had turned around to tell my son that there aren't any "seats" available, and after having noticed at least 2 vacant seats at the bar, Doug strode right up to me, again, in my face, and said "We don't have any seats, we're at full capacity, and there are people waiting!!", I was once again momentarily stunned by his aggressive and abrupt manner, and simply said "We were just going to sit at the bar and have a drink", to which he responded "No you're not!" And strode off. I've been going to pubs a lot, for over 45 years, in many places, and have NEVER experienced such rudeness! In fact, I don't remember experiencing ANY rudeness from an any pub landlord! I like pubs and pubs like me! Needless to say my son and I walked out. I have NEVER in my life experienced a "pub" (I guess Doug's so-called pub is really just a burger joint) where they have been so busy to the point that they turn customers away and you can't even get a drink at the bar. Food: No idea! Service: None! Vibe: Immediate and unwarranted hostility upon entering. Landlord: Appalling! Thanks Doug for giving me the worst experience that I have ever had in any pub anywhere in the World! I think the landlord needs to consider the fact that a pub, by definition (a public house, right?) should be a hospitable place. When we first arrived we said that we were a party of 7 and the host said they wouldn't be able to serve us and walked away. My friend then went inside to ask if it would be fine if we split up into a party of 3 and a party of 4 and they still seemed unwilling to do it but then one of the waitresses said it was fine and they could seat us as soon as they cleared the two tables. A minute later the host came and put up a handwritten note on the door saying "We cannot accept groups of seven or more. Please don't ask" which seemed a bit passive aggressive, but we were able to get seated. Other than the one man, the other waitress and bartender seemed very friendly. The walls were decorated with an eclectic mix of posters and paintings, and the menu had a bunch of funny quips on the back that reminded me of things my grandmother would have lying around her house. The food came out very fresh and in pretty large portions. The chicken wings were quite juicy and flavorful. Other than the slightly sour experience we had when we first arrived I'd say this was a pretty good pub. read more

I'm going to preface this by saying I don't usually write negative reviews. I also want to add that their website says "pet friendly," not that that applies to me, but it was misleading. I walked up to this pub after a long hike with my service dog. She did not have her vest on because I didn't want it to get dirty while we were hiking, but legally she's not required to be wearing one. A man who I believe to be the owner looked at me as I walked up and said "I don't do dogs." I explained she was a service animal and he said "I don't care." I explained that that's against the law and he said "I'm allergic I don't do dogs." Then he told me to "go get the police they're right up there." The Americans with Disabilities act specifically sites allergies as not being a good enough reason to deny someone service. I have accepted that as a person with a disability and consequently a service dog that some things in my life will be harder. And I have come across people who don't understand service animals in the past, but he was incredibly rude about it as well, making me feel small or stupid or unwelcome for just wanting to buy a burger and a beer from him. He didn't just break the legal protections in place that are meant to keep me from feeling that way, he was a real ass about it as well. To any restaurant owners reading this, you are UNDER THE LAW not allowed to deny folks with service animals the same accommodations you'd afford anyone else. Read up on it before being a Dick. To anyone who has felt this way as well, I'm so sorry and I hope you moved on to give your business to someone who got a big fat tip. read more

This is my first negative review ever so it's gotta count for something. My wife, parents and our five and two year old wandered in on a 2pm Sunday afternoon. Our two year old was crying because he had just woken from a nap. The owner then said he'd we rather go to a different place (!) and repeated this multiple times before we were even seated... If you're not interested in serving families as a main street establishment - don't be open at 2p on a weekend. When I told the owner I will share this he moved to being aggressive and insulting... Good news - 5 min later we were seated happily at cold spring pizza where the food is great, the staff is welcoming and the IPAs are nice and cold! read more

Rude bartender who essentially refused to take my order when the bar was completely empty because "there was a rush of people who just left for the train." Huh? He couldn't take my order because a bunch of people had just paid and left and he now had an empty bar? I'm a former NYC bartender/server so I get that tourists are annoying and I get being slammed behind the bar and needing a minute to recover...but ultimately you work in the service industry and being somewhat nice (or at a minimum not being a jerk) is part of the job. The name and outside would suggest this was a true dive bar but inside feels more "traditional" than divey. The walls are littered with memorabilia and funny signs, while the bar feels a little like stepping back in time. We only had drinks but the staff - and owner - were extremely friendly and engaging and created a very nice ambiance. It's also the bar in town that closes latest. Prices were good. We got the Blister Burger and the Standard Burger (where you can customize). They warn you that the Blister Burger is very spicy, but I did not feel any heat. The flavors of the jalapenos and such were somewhat there, but I was disappointed. Even still, we could taste the quality of the meat (8 ounces) and the use of the English muffin was nice in that you didn't feel too stuffed. I do wish that there was more flavor in the burger - I had to load up on their 'reaper mayo' and ketchup. Timing is everything and we beat the crowd on a Sunday to enjoy a quick table, attentive , courteous and friendly waitress and our dishes were excellent! By the time we left, the place was packed! Stopped by for a late lunch.. I've been coming to Cold Spring a while now and have passed Dougs numerous times and have been meaning to try it. After walking several hours, my friend Rochelle and I were craving some comfort food. Doug's menu read our mind. Walking into this festive bar, it was nice to see the Coney Island Luna sign across from bar: Brooklyn and Cold Spring are practically neighbors. We were greeted by Doug, the owner and seated at the bar. The comfy bar stools were a gift.. perfect for sipping a nice cool beer. The beer menu had wonderful choices and cool names attached from neighboring spots like Newburgh, Chatham and Ommegang( which I need to really try next time: a melange of citrus flavors like pineapple, grapefruit and peach). I chose the Chatham which does have a mighty fine Czech Republic malt taste: light and crisp. The menu describes it as Czech Republicesque and having visited Prague and marveled at their beers, Doug can proudly stand by Chatham. It was simply delicious beer. In fact, I want to try all the beers on the menu! The menu is short and sweet with pub offerings: shrimp tacos, 16 ounce chili with a mix of beef, cannelloni beans smothered with sour cream and cheese and a kick ass sauce. Rochelle's first choice was the chili but it was described as a big portion. Doug gave her a small cup to taste and she loved it but opted for the Chicken Tenders with honey mustard sauce and fries. The fries were crisp and delicious. There are also chicken wings with 2 different sauces to choose from. If you just want a side of onion rings or fries with your beer those are available as well. There is a nice variety of burgers which all come with fries. I had the Vegetarian Black Bean burger which came with Swiss cheese on top( first time, kid you not, I've had Swiss cheese. Not bad!). I cheated with the burger on an English Muffin and asked to have onion rings( another cheat) vs fries which was accommodated with a small surcharge. I love the feel of this place: homey, cozy and chill vibe I expect from a neighborhood bar. I really felt Bay Ridge Brooklyn melted into Cold Spring. Doug, the owner, was greeting everyone, seating diners, making drinks, small talk: cool guy! The staff are all friendly, professional and courteous. Decided to check out this local dive based on a recommendation from an Airbnb host and so glad we did!! It was about a 20 minute car ride from Carmel, NY and upon arriving, we immediately see their catchy sign that says "Voted Best Burger in Town by Some Guy Who Likes Burgers", which I thought was pretty clever. Essentially Doug's is known for their burgers since they are all served on English Muffins and boy are they tasty! Their menu is quite simple and is broken down to "Not Burgers" and "Burgers". Their 1/2 lb burger is made from fresh ground beef so be prepared to wait a little bit before it comes out. Knowing this, we decided to order Chicken Wings for appetizers and omgggg those wings were so delicious! We got the Buffalo flavor and the wings were perfectly crisp with a nice coating of the sauce. So good and super upset I left them in the uber on the ride back :( For dinner, I opted to keep it simple and ordered the Pretty Darn Good Burge with cheese and he got the Oklahoma City which had onion rings, cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. Any additional things you wanted add like bacon, onions, mushrooms etc is an additional $1 and you could substitute the fries with onion rings for an additional $2. Both were burgers were really good! I was not able to finish mines but the burger tasted fresh and I liked having it on a English Muffin. Ok, I love, really love this place. The burgers are wonderful, not too big nor small, perfectly placed on an English muffin. There are plenty of options, if you want something customized. I usually order a burger with Blue Cheese, rare. It's like really good steak Tatar. The sweet potato fries are the winner, but the burger comes with a choice of fries. Equally epic is the vibe of the place. Servers are always friendly and engaging. We were there on an informal trivia night thing and we had a great time collaborating with the table next to us and the staff. Anyway, I'm no stranger to the restaurant world. I've cooked, waited tables, been a prep cook and had my first job at 14 as a dishwasher at a steakhouse in the high sierra. Doing everything right and making it look easy is anything but easy. Doug's is amazing!!!!!!!!!! We tried to come in after hiking but Doug inform us he was stock full. Instead of watching us city slickers struggle, he offered the suggestion of Barber and Brew across the way. It was a great suggestion and I was surprised he was nice enough to support other local businesses. The suggestion was fabolous. We stayed for a snack and many rounds and decided to come back to Doug's anyway. Later in the night, it was full of mostly locals so we were able to grab a seat. Not sure if it's a no standing bar, if it was actually full, or if they're tired of tourist. Whatever. We had no issue coming in later in the night and sat ourselves. We got onion wings, a burger, hot wings, and multiple pints. The onion rings were so life changing. Delicious. I'm drooling over them now. Our waitress was sweet and quick and totally okay with our drunken shenanigans and hiking gear. Though it wasn't my first choice Doug's was a nice little gem among the bigger name restaurants in Cold Springs. After a long day of hiking it was good to finally drink craft beer and eat pretty good burgers. Doug's is a pretty small and dark place but not in a divey sort of way. They play sports, have cute Americana on the ways and offer craft beer at the bar. Their menu is split between "Not Burgers" and "Burgers" which signals what sort of food you should order. Apparently Doug walks around and speaks with customers which I would of liked to see but I didn't see him this day. What I did enjoy though was the food and drinks. They have a good variety of craft beer here like UFO and the bartenders even serve them with orange slices on the rims! Out of the several burgers they offer I tried the "blue, swine & tears" which the bartender remarked was his favorite... and I can see why. I was taken a little back that they didn't serve the burgers on brioche buns but the burger was fairly juicy and well cooked. I would of recommend this burger as well. As I said before Doug's wasn't my first choice. I was looking into restaurants up the street since that is where I came back from Boscobel but because they were all full or were closing I stumbled onto Doug's. And you know I am kind of glad that happened because Doug's is a very lowkey Americana bar and It fits the spirit of Cold Spring a lot. read more

On our way to hiking in Highlands State Park we stopped at Doug's for a burger to fuel up. Delicious burgers and black bean burger, helpful wait staff. Clean restrooms and a casual pub atmosphere. The extremely rude Owner has a no cell phone policy. I was on the phone. He told me there's a no phone policy I. Apologized and let my phone call go .. my grandmother who is dying called me about five minutes later (as I forgot about his weird rule that nobody in the modern day has, ) and as soon as I answered to my dying grandmothers call, he started calling me names telling me I'm stupid. Didn't you listen to what I said before ? And completely started screaming at me because I answered my grandmother's phone call from the hospital. She only calls me once a day if that , and it was completely uncalled for for him to talk to a woman that way, Or any customer for that matter !! Horrible dive atmosphere anyway, and what a miserable man!!!! He is chasing off people that actually have money to spend in the place and anyone who he thinks is young !! I look half my age so maybe it was because of that even though I'm nearly 50 !!!! no matter the circumstance it's unnecessary behavior and very very uncalled for. I don't know why he thinks he can talk to people like that, but he clearly has issues if you have a cell phone, it would be your best interest to avoid this place altogether since the owner is living in a delusional fantasy world where phones don't exist. Very good selection of micro brews on draft, and big brewery beers in bottles. Food was great. Nice selection of burgers. Buffalo wings were juicy and meaty, with crispy exterior, but not soggy or greasy. Good sized burgers with fresh toppings served on lightly toasted English muffins. Excellent fries were hot and crispy, right out of the fryer. Chicken fingers were thick and juicy, not cookie cutter flat dry frozen fingers. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. Great people, beer and food. A lot of locals hang out here but they welcome tourists too. Great fries and grilled vegetables were $13 and cooked perfectly. Other restaurants in the Hudson Valley would change two, three times as much for this vegetable dish and served a lesser product. We get to Doug's on most trips to the Valley. Damn that burger was pretty good. Ok ok ok I just wanted to play along with name of this place...but to be more honest, that burger was REALLY DAMN GOOD! The sign outside says, "Voted best burger in town by some guy who likes burgers"...hah okay, I'm convinced ;) We entered the pub and were greeted by the two guys running the show, one of which was Doug, who were super friendly and chill. The place itself is super chill. Perfect place to grab a beer, have a burger, and chillllll out. I started with the Southern Tier Old Man Winter Amber Ale. Top 3 beers I've ever had, it was so damn good. For my burger I decided to get one with pepper jack cheese, bacon, and onions. That burger was so freaking good! Cooked to perfection, incredible meat. A very simple burger yet so memorable. The fries were super fresh and were some of the best fries I've ever had. A beer & a burger.
